George W. Bush

XLIII President of the United States: 2001 - 2009

Remarks at a Bush-Cheney Reception in Greenville, South Carolina

November 10, 2003

Thank you all for coming. I'm honored to be here. Please be seated.

Mr. Speaker, thank you for those warm remarks. South Carolina will always have a big part of my political career. I'm proud of all the people here. I want to thank you for your friendship. I remember 2000 very well. Today we're laying the foundation for what will be a South Carolina and a national victory in 2004.

I'm proud to have your support. I'm loosening up. [Laughter] I'm getting ready. But politics will come in its own time.

[Sophia enters speaking in horrified disbelief]

Sophia Gold: Oh my God! America just told me that the *neighbors* are coming!

Sally Nash: And here they are!

Sophia Gold: Oh! And she was just saying how happy you were to finally have them over! Because the two of you are so... introspective and shy. Should have done it ages ago, basically.

THE MAN WHO DIED TWICE

by

EDWIN ARLINGTON ROBINSON

page 16

Why did you let the devil's retinue

page 17

That was to be a part be everything,

And so drive out your daemon till your star

Should sing unheard for you whose ears were left

Only for drums and songs of your destroyers?

And now even they are gone - all but the drums.

You knew that if you waited, they, not you,

Should cease - that they should all be hushed at last

In that great golden choral fire of sound.

'Symphony Number Three. Fernando Nash.'

Five little words, like that, if you had waited,

Would be enough tonight, you flabby scallion,

To put you on the small roll of the mighty.

As for the other two, they're in a box

Under the bed; and they will soon be nowhere.

You do not have to mourn over them,

For they were only ladders carrying you

page 18

Up to the half-way place from which you fell,

And should have fallen, since you were going to fall,

A little faster, and so broken at once

Your neck. Why could you not have fallen faster

And saved yourself all this? If you had given

The devil a sign to play those drums of death

Longer and louder at about that time,

You might be now a carrion more at ease

Than you are like to be till you make haste.

What else, in God's name, are you waiting for?

And where's the use? And while I'm asking that;

Where was the use of all your prentice-years

Wherein you toiled, while others only tinkled,

Till you were master of a new machine

That only your invention could have built

Or driven? You built it and you let it rust.

May 9th

May 9th seems to be a divergence point in my journal. When I look back to my entries, I see that I am still perceiving the world through the eyes of Kerry Burgess. After May 9th, I am starting to question details about that identity. The first clue is when I started taking a closer look at all the places I lived during the 90's. I began to understand that I didn't actually live at those places, rather the addresses are symbolic of something else. My entire memory of Kerry Burgess's live is symbolic of Thomas Ray's life. Most of it is symbolism, some of it is there for continuity.

For instance, one of the clearest clues was where I remember living in 1990 after I remember leaving the Navy. I lived on a street named Wexford in a community named Taylors. Taylors was a familiar name because that was the name of my first ship, the USS Taylor. Then, around May 9th, a flash of inspiration hit me to look up the meaning behind the name of "Wexford." I knew even before I read the article that it had a special meaning. Wexford is the name of a town where John Barry was born.

NAVAL HISTORY & HERITAGE COMMAND

The Navy: The Continental Period, 1775-1890

by Michael A. Palmer

The North American colonies of Great Britain developed in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries as parts of a powerful European maritime empire. Americans provided the mother country with a variety of export goods, among them naval stores, and even constructed ships. American sailors, some by choice, some as the result of the efforts of British press gangs, served in the men-of-war of the Royal Navy. Continental navy Captain Nicholas Biddle, for example, served as a youth in the Royal Navy alongside Horatio Nelson.

Biddle

Born in Philadelphia, Pa., in 1750, Nicholas Biddle was appointed a Captain in the Continental Navy in 1775. He had a brilliant career in command of Andrew Doria and Randolph and was killed when the latter blew up while engaging the far larger HMS Yarmouth, 7 March 1778.

The fourth Biddle (DLG-34) was laid down on 9 December 1963 at Bath, Maine, by the Bath Iron Works; launched on 2 July 1965; sponsored by Mrs. Pearle Jean Bates; and commissioned on 21 January 1967

On 30 June 1975, Biddle was reclassified a guided-missile cruiser and redesignated CG-34.

Belknap-class cruiser

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Belknap class cruiser was a class of single-ended guided missile cruisers (their missile armament was installed only forward, unlike "double-ended" missile cruisers with missile armament installed both forward and aft) built for the United States Navy during the 1960s. They were originally designated as DLG frigates (destroyer leaders; the USN use of the term frigate from 1950 to 1975 was intended to evoke the power of the sailing frigates of old), but in the 1975 fleet realignment, they were reclassified as guided missile cruisers (CG).

Description

When commissioned, the main armament of the Belknap class was a 5-inch/54-caliber Mk. 42 gun on the quarterdeck and a twin-rail RIM-2 Terrier Mk 10 Missile Launcher on the foredeck. The class was also equipped with two twin 3"/50 caliber guns for defence against sub-sonic aircraft. In the early 1980s, the Terrier missiles were replaced with RIM-67 Standard missiles; and during the NTU program in the late 1980s and early 1990s the class had its Standard SM-1 system upgraded to utilize SM-2ER Block II, the 3 inch guns were replaced with two 4 cell Harpoon Surface-to-surface missile launchers, and two Phalanx CIWS systems were installed.

MODEST MOUSE

"Ocean Breathes Salty"

Your body may be gone, I'm gonna carry you in.
In my head, in my heart, in my soul.
And maybe we'll get lucky and we'll both live again.
Well I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. Don't think so.

Well that is that and this is this.
You tell me what you want and I'll tell you what you get.
You get away from me. You get away from me.
Collected my belongings and I left the jail.
Well thanks for the time, I needed to think a spell.
I had to think awhile. I had to think awhile.

The ocean breathes salty, won't you carry it in?
In your head, in your mouth, in your soul.
And maybe we'll get lucky and we'll both grow old.
Well I don't know. I don't know. I don't know. I hope so.

Well that is that and this is this.
You tell me what you want and I'll tell you what you get.
You get away from me. You get away from me.
Collected my belongings and I left the jail.
Well thanks for the time, I needed to think a spell.
I had to think awhile. I had to think awhile.

Well that is that and this is this.
Will you tell me what you saw and I'll tell you what you missed,
when the ocean met the sky.
You missed when time and life shook hands and said goodbye.
When the earth folded in on itself.
And said "Good luck, for your sake I hope heaven and hell
are really there, but I wouldn't hold my breath."
You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste death?
You wasted life, why wouldn't you waste death?

The X Files

The Field Where I Died

Episode 405

THERAPIST: I want you to go into your past, beyond your life as Fox Mulder.

(His breathing is ragged.)

What do you see?

(He sighs and moans. Scully is standing in the back.)

MULDER: Ghetto streets... shattered glass... bodies of the dead... I'm a woman... a Jewish woman... Poland. My son is with me. He is Samantha.

THERAPIST: Samantha? I thought Samantha was your sister.

MULDER: In this life, she is my son.

(His eyes open.)

I see my father.

(He looks down, tearful.)

He's dead in the street. He is Scully...

(Scully's eyes widen slightly.)

But now... he's gone on now... waiting for us. The souls... come back together... different... but always together... again and again... to learn. I can't go to my father.

(He shakes his head, almost crying.)

Gestapo is standing next to him. An officer... he's Cancer Man... evil returns as evil...

(He lifts his head now, holding his eyes closed for a few seconds. He then opens them, and they are more hopeful.)

But love... love... souls mate eternal... my... husband... is taken away from me. To the camps. He is Melissa. We're always taken away.

(He starts to cry. Scully is deeply saddened by this, almost crying herself. He looks up, tears fading.)

I'm rising... I'm rising now... I'm rising now... high above... my body. Above the field. My face is bloody. Near the bunker... the federals are gone... my sergeant is also dead. He is Scully.

(Scully is less shocked by this, listening closely.)

Sarah holds me. She is sad.

(His tears well up again. He shakes his head slightly.)

She is Melissa. She lives... near... the battle... Hamilton County... her name is Kavanaugh. Sarah Kavanaugh...

(Scully writes this down.)

And my name... is Sullivan Biddle.

Goddamnit I wake up feeling a hundred times worse than when I went to sleep.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 04/12/10 8:46 PM
I was going to note after watching the 2004 film "The Day After Tomorrow" on television the other day my observation about the actor Perry King and that woman who also had a role in that film and about how that made me think of that "The Outer Limits" episode the two of them starred in. Perry King was a Senator who was injured in a car wreck and the woman was the doctor who examined him and who determined he was not human. I think about it again now because I saw Perry King in a dream just before I awoke from an extended nap and I have been thinking about that dream. I cannot remember other details that lead up to the scenes I remember but I seem to be flying through the sky at night and I might have actually been wearing a "Superman" outfit in the dream but I did not see any details in the dream that suggest I was wearing that clothing. I do have the sense from the dream that I was wearing clothing similar to "Superman" though. I was flying through the sky and I was looking down and I seemed to be looking for something. I think I was using my X-ray vision to see if I could see the thermal energy from a person in a house I had just left and I am aware of looking down at trees and I could see some kind of thermal visuals down below me on the ground. I saw something else too and I was trying to figure out what it was and that was in another location from where I had been first looking. I was looking at something that was similar to that thermal image from my X-ray vision but at another time the visual seemed to be a silver bar in the shape of a rectangle, where the previous X-ray thermal image was a reddish rectangle bar. Then I was on the ground and the details are vague but the object I had seen might have been below the ground. I had also seen Perry King standing around there and that first observation is vague now but I think I saw him standing nearing that site on the ground and then he left in one direction and then I landed on the ground and then he showed up from another direction and I am left with the sense I grabbed him by the neck or I did and then quickly let go of his neck as though I had recognized him and I then let go of his neck. The details are growing vague now but I think I had him get a shovel to start digging to find out what I saw underground and I am not certain if I dreamed that part or if that was a line of thought immediately after I woke up. I think I might have forgotten other details after I started writing this. I have also had the certain sense that Michelle Kwan was communicating with me and there was something about how she suggested that I not trust people around me right now.

YOUNG
You know, not one of them remembers a damn thing about the planet or how they got here.

TJ
Well, Caine believes that's God's way of telling them they've been reborn.

YOUNG
Was that before or after He gave them amnesia?

TJ
The others think that maybe the aliens discovered them and returned them to us as an act of benevolence.

YOUNG
Well, that's nice.

TJ
You're not buying it.

YOUNG
Nah. These aliens are too damned powerful. Building planets, rebuilding shuttles. They could-they could squash us like ants if they wanted to.

TJ
That scares you?

YOUNG
Yes. But what scares me even more is the feeling I got when I looked them in the eye.

TJ
I thought it was just me.

YOUNG
I should be welcoming them with open arms, but I can't be in a room with any of them for more than a minute before I want to get the hell away.

(annoyed)
Oh, why bother? Call it God's will, and you needn't give it another thought.

CAINE
He must have brought us here for a reason. He must have saved us for a reason.

RUSH
Yeah, saved from what? Do you remember? I mean, the burning bush spoke to Moses. Gabriel, was it, spoke to Abraham? Yet you — you've returned here with no proof of your savior one way or the other.

CAINE
(becoming angry)
I'll leave you to your work.

[Caine starts to leave.]

RUSH
Let me ask you.

[Caine turns around.]

RUSH
(approaching Caine)
The shuttle was restored to its original condition by the aliens who sent you here — better than it was before, even.

CAINE
Well, that sounds to me more like the work of God than aliens.

RUSH
Well, if this shuttle has been restored so perfectly, then why weren't all of you? I mean, Norris wasn't born with astigmatism, was he? Mr. Chan surely had a full head of hair at one time.

CAINE: How about some coffee?

JOHANSEN: Sure.

(Caine picks up some pieces of cut wood and takes them across to the stove while T.J. looks around the room. The finish on the log walls, and the perfection of the wooden furniture, together with things like the glass windows, stone fireplaces, metal stove and rugs on the floor, is far superior to anything that these colonists could have built with their limited materials.)

JOHANSEN: Where did all this stuff come from? There's no way you could have made it all.

CAINE: You got that right. We were still working on lean-tos with dirt floors, and the winter was coming. Frankly, I was getting a bit worried. And then one day, on a scout, we found 'em. Half a dozen just like this scattered over the valley.

JOHANSEN: We did an aerial survey. We would have seen them.

CAINE: I know.

JOHANSEN: So they just appear out of nowhere and that's good enough for you?

CAINE: Well, I don't think we would have survived the winter without them, and that's good enough for me.

Red Storm Rising

GERMANY, FORWARD EDGE OF THE BATTLE AREA

"Twenty miles, Duke."

"Right. Call it off, Don."

"Roge. Still no fire-control emanations on us, and no search stuff is lingering our way. Lots of radio chatter, but mostly west of us. Very little VOX coming from the target."

Ellington reached his left hand down to arm the four AIM-9M Sidewinder missiles hanging under his wings. The weapon-indicator light blinked a lethal, friendly green.

"Eighteen miles. Target appears to be circling normally, not taking evasive action."

Ten miles to the minute, Ellington computed in his mind, one minute forty seconds.

"Sixteen miles." Eisly read the numbers off a computer readout keyed to the NAVSTAR satellite navigation system.

The Mainstay would not have a chance. The Frisbee would not begin to climb until she was directly underneath the target. Fourteen miles. Twelve. Ten. Eight. Six miles to the converted air transport.

"The Mainstay just reversed her turn-yeah, she's jinking. A Foxfire just swept over us," Eisly said evenly. A MiG-25 interceptor, presumably acting on instructions from the IL-76, was now searching for them. With its high power and small arc, the Foxfire stood a good chance of acquiring them, Stealth technology or not. "The Mainstay might have us."

"Anything locked on us?"

"Not yet." Eisly's eyes were glued to the threat-receiver instruments. No missile-control radars had centered on the Frisbee yet. "Coming under the target."

Small Town, Nation Ask: Why? -- Boyfriend Wrote That He Didn't Want Smith's Kids, Say Police

By Jim Clarke

AP

UNION, S.C. - She spun a heartbreaking tale of being dumped on a lonely road by a carjacker who abducted her two young sons. Today, she was jeered by spectators and covered her face as she headed for the courthouse.

Susan Smith, whose tearful pleas for her sons' return inspired a nationwide vigil, was charged with killing 3-year-old Michael and 14-month-old Alex. And the nine-day search by authorities and hundreds of volunteers ended where their mother's story began: at John D. Long Lake, where a car with two small bodies was found.

CNN, citing an unidentified source, said Smith became a strong suspect when investigators found a letter from a boyfriend telling her he wanted to be with her but he "did not want any kids around."

WIS-TV in Columbia said it received a letter today from a lawyer representing a Tom Findlay of Union, identifying Findlay as the boyfriend. According to the station, the statement said Findlay broke off the relationship with Smith on Oct. 18 because he was not ready to assume the responsibilities of being a father. It also said he knew nothing about the killings.

The station would not identify the lawyer, and there was no answer today at the phone number listed for Tom Findlay in Union.

Emotions were high as Smith, 23, was driven from the York County Detention Center in Rock Hill, where she was held overnight, to the Union County courthouse for her first hearing on two murder charges.

"Hold your head up! You're a baby murderer!" shouted Gloria Smith, one of those in the pack.

After coming to the courthouse, though, Smith opted not to attend a brief hearing. Her lawyer, David Bruck, waived her right to a bond hearing, and Circuit Judge Larry Patterson said she would remain in custody without bond.

Bruck is a death-penalty expert, but he said, "That is not the reason I was retained." Solicitor Thomas Pope, the prosecutor, had said he would consider seeking the death penalty against Smith.

Bruck would not discuss a possible defense strategy or other aspects of the case. All he would say about Smith was that "she is heartbroken."

So I think that is how they find out I had been shot down. The South Vietnamese called my family to notify them and I had not thought about that possibility when I put my home address on some paperwork I gave them. I guess that is what it means. It may be important that I got those two tickets and that might mean that I was a POW twice. "1901"

Counting all different ideas drifting away
Past and present they don’t matter
Now the future’s sorted out
Watch her moving in elliptical patterns
Think it’s not what you say
What you say is way too complicated
For a minute thought I couldn’t tell how to fall out

It’s twenty seconds 'til the last call
Going hey hey hey hey hey hey
Lie down you know it’s easy
Like we did it over summer long

And I’ll be anything you ask and more
Going hey hey hey hey hey hey hey
It’s not a miracle we needed
And no I wouldn’t let you think so

Fold it, fold it, fold it, fold it
Fold it, fold it, fold it, fold it

Girlfriend, oh your girlfriend is drifting away
Past and present 1855-1901
Watch them built up a material tower
Think it’s not gonna stay anyway
I think it’s overrated
For a minute thought I couldn’t tell how to fall out

It’s twenty seconds 'til the last call
Going hey hey hey hey hey hey
Lie down you know it’s easy
Like we did it over summer long

And I’ll be anything you ask and more

Quotes

Judy Shepherd: Peter hasn't spoken a word since it happened.

Estate Agent: Oh. Oh, my. I'm so sorry. How terribly awful.

Judy Shepherd: It's OK. We barely even knew our parents. They were always away. Skiing, gambling in Monte Carlo, on safari in darkest Africa. We didn't even know if they loved us. But when the Sheik's yacht went down, they managed to write us a really beautiful goodbye note that was found floating in a champagne bottle amongst the debris.

[Starts crying]

Judy Shepherd: Excuse me.

[Judy leaves the room. Camera pans away to show that she is actually laughing at the lie she just told the Estate Agent]

Aunt Nora: [to the Estate Agent] They were very devoted parents. Car crash in Canada.

Ariadne: You might have the rest of the team convinced to carry on with this job, but they don't know the truth.

Cobb: Truth? What truth?

Ariadne: The truth that at any minute, you might bring a freight train through the wall. The truth that Mal is bursting through your subconscious. And the truth that as we go deeper into Fischer, we're also going deeper into you. And... I'm not sure we're gonna like what we find.

MODEST MOUSE

"The World At Large"

Ice-age heat wave, can't complain.
If the world's at large, why should I remain?
Walked away to another plan.
Gonna find another place, maybe one I can stand.
I move on to another day,
to a whole new town with a whole new way.
Went to the porch to have a thought.
Got to the door and again, I couldn't stop.
You don't know where and you don't know when.
But you still got your words and you got your friends.
Walk along to another day.
Work a little harder, work another way.

Well uh-uh baby I ain't got no plan.
We'll float on maybe would you understand?
Gonna float on maybe would you understand?
Well float on maybe would you understand?

The days get shorter and the nights get cold.
I like the autumn but this place is getting old.
I pack up my belongings and I head for the coast.
It might not be a lot but I feel like I'm making the most.
The days get longer and the nights smell green.
I guess it's not surprising but it's spring and I should leave.

I like songs about drifters - books about the same.
They both seem to make me feel a little less insane.
Walked on off to another spot.
I still haven't gotten anywhere that I want.
Did I want love? Did I need to know?
Why does it always feel like I'm caught in an undertow?

The moths beat themselves to death against the lights.
Adding their breeze to the summer nights.
Outside, water like air was great.
I didn't know what I had that day.
Walk a little farther to another plan.
You said that you did, but you didn't understand.

I know that starting over is not what life's about.
But my thoughts were so loud I couldn't hear my mouth.
My thoughts were so loud I couldn't hear my mouth.
My thoughts were so loud.

Bring the game! Hurry!
- Judy, are you okay? - I'm fine. Help them.
Come on, Judy.
Gimme the dice!
"You're almost there with much at stake...
but now the ground begins to quake."
- Oh, my God! - What?
I wish Mom and Dad were here.
So do l.
Our only chance is if we finish the game!
It's your turn !

Technology is reality.

Reality is just electrical signals bouncing around inside my physical mind.

Right now in the true reality my physical body could be reclined somewhere with a device over my head that is beaming information into my physical brain that is specifically reorganizing the neurons in my physical brain to create this reality I sense right here right now.

Reality fabricated has to be highly realistic. Otherwise there isn't much point to it.

Consistently I have had the feeling there is another person directing my fabricated reality. My theory that there are at least two of us calibrating this reality artificial.

The newest theory I have wrings out the most feelings of loneliest when I consider that there is no one out there in this reality to understand what I have to say because no one is programmed to care about this information. The irony sure feels real.

Realistically devious.

Mei Chen Returns

If he can lure Mei Chen into his render, then we can launch what's known as a "zero-day attack.
" A hack that will let us take advantage of a previously unknown vulnerability in her chip's software.
Now, we only get one chance at this.
Yes, but if we're right, we can get a foothold inside her system and remotely wipe all the stolen CIA information and get out again before she even notices.
And if we're wrong? There is a very realistic chance that we'll leave Gabriel completely vulnerable.
She'll be able to use what we've done to stay in his head.
We may never be able to get her out again.
What are our other options? Pretty much none.
I'm inside.
What do you see? It's empty, except for the broken window.
His system's wide open.
All right.
Get ready.
I know you're here.
Where are you? Curious about me, Gabriel? She took the bait! This is fascinating.
I wish I could see her.
All right.
Launching the decoy vector.
Curious? No.
You're not being truthful.
You're as curious about me as I am about you.
How could you not be? The room where you last saw your wife Such an abrupt goodbye.
Your renders are sosad.
There are so many more things you can do, Gabriel.
More enjoyable things.
The chip has given me quite an education.
Human sexuality is such a mystery.
I never realized I was such a deviant.

Mei Chen Returns

A CIA analyst is off the reservation with a hard drive full of intelligence valuable enough to lure an MI6 officer to a private meet.
That officer wires their conversation back to his superiors at S.I.S., only to be shot and killed by an unknown assailant, but the CIA director doesn't think it's relevant? What's relevant is finding Kate and the drive before someone else does.
What is it? Gabriel is missing.
What do you mean, missing? He just lost his wife.
Telling me Gabriel is missing is like telling me an aircraft carrier is missing.
Except he's not an aircraft carrier.
He's a human being, and he's entitled to mourn.
I can put a team together.
No, you're not putting a team together.
He'll be back.
How do you know that? Because I know my agent.
A lot of people knew Kate Anderson.
And now we're going to hunt her down and neutralize her.
You mean arrest her.
I mean keep her from exposing sensitive secrets to our enemies.
Lillian, get Gabriel back here.
I don't care how you do it.
Just do it in the next 24 hours.
How could you leave me like this? With so many questions.
Gabriel Gabriel Anybody there? I'm going crazy.
Look, you don't want to do this.
You go now, gringo.
Just breathe.
Breathe.
How'd you find me? Your honeymoon photos.
You broke into my apartment? I have a key, remember?
