For a while lately, I have been "remembering" a trivial detail from my artificial and symbolic memory. I am "remembering" when Merle and Tom Matter were gossiping in our Greenville office of Ketterman's, in the First Federal building, about something from a visit by sales executive Betty Griffith and VP Dan Benbow. Merle commented on how he saw Betty reach in Dan's pocket to get the car keys and that was part of their gossip about whether they were sleeping together. I have been wondeing if that was actually something about Phoebe reaching into my pocket to get the car keys and the people in the office, where ever it was we were, and people who didn't know Phoebe and I are married and didn't know about the cover stories, were gossiping about whether Phoebe and I were having an affair.

I have also been wondering if I have a sham wife or if, as in the latest "Batman," I just pretended to be a playboy bachelor.

I don't remember yet why Phoebe and I would be traveling together like that on business but I think it was part of my cover. And of course, I have all these business interests that I have noted. It could be that I was known as Phoebe's agent, which is quite clever. I am also thinking that traveling on business was a good cover for us, and while we would check into separate hotel rooms, we would either have adjoining suites, or more likely, we would sleep in hotels that were part of my business and special arrangements were made to protect our cover. I am also thinking about those false walls in the latest "Manchurian Candidate" movie.

Hell, my artificial memories may be nothing more than from when one of my body doubles was recording video in his office and then those videos were shown to me through some brainwashing process. Who the hell knows. I certainly do not.

When I lived on Wexford Drive, my apartment was right off a main road that is labeled as Old Spartanburg Road at that point, but I always thought of it as East North Street, which is its name as it approaches Greenville.

That first apartment I “remember” living at after I moved to Greenville, SC, after leaving the Navy in 1990, is listed on the map as Preserve at Woods Lake. I wrote about it a while back but I don’t remember what its name was when I lived there. Jim Shea told me about it after he found that job with Ketterman’s at took my resume along to his job interview. The address is listed as:

My next door neighbor was Barbara Kelley. She introduced me to a group of people and we used to go over to a bar named Phoenix after work. We lost contact for a while after I moved to Wexford in Taylors but I saw them again some time later and we caught up.

Now I am wondering more about the significance of that apartment being next to the airport

In my "memory," which is symbolic, of 1990, I was buying furnishing for my new apartment in Greenville after getting out of the Navy and starting to work for Ketterman's Inc. I "remember" that I bought a Mitsubishi television that I liked a lot and a matching VCR that I thought was cool. I also bought a Kenwood tuner/amplifier and a Kenwood CD player that I was very pleased with. The first CD's I bought for that CD player, that I can "remember," was a dual-CD set, or maybe it was just two separate albums, I'm not sure without thinking about it more, of Depeche Mode and I used to listen a lot to those CD's. Another set, which I also listened to for hours nonstop, was a dual-CD set titled "The Best Of The Doors." I just bought that Doors set again and I am still thinking that I must have been a musician with them. Probably a studio musician, possibly guitar or piano or both. I also bought Pink Floyd's "The Wall" set and I am still thinking that I contributed to that work as well, although I don't actually remember anything like that.
