JACK JOHNSON

"Mediocre Bad Guys"

Well don't give me no comic book sad looks no more
Please don't use those same excuses you've used before
Mmm hmmm Mmm hmmm
You told yourself so many times it's okay
So eager to try
But you just don't know how to come back down
And now you beat me up, you break me down
Hoping I don't come around,
Kick me when I'm on the ground,
Beat me up, break me down,
Hoping I don't come around,
Kick me when I'm on the ground

Well how about those people I know that you know the ones I mean
Not so good, not so bad
Only know what they have
And they have only what they've seen
Them mediocre bad guys can really bring you down
They can't be defeated, and you know
They're never going to come around

They just beat me up and break me down
Hoping I don't come around
Kick me when I'm on the ground
Beat me up, and break me down
Hoping I don't come around
Kick me when I'm on the ground
They just beat me up and break me down
Hoping I don't come around
Kick me when I'm on the ground
Beat me up, and break me down
Hoping I don't come around
Kick me when I'm on the ground
Beat me up and break me down
Hoping I don't come around
Kick me when I'm on the ground
Beat me up, break me down
Hoping I don't come around
Kick me when I'm on the ground

President Bush Delivers Commencement Address at Texas A&M

Texas A&M University

College Station, Texas

10:36 A.M. CST

THE PRESIDENT: Thank you all. Howdy!

AUDIENCE: Howdy!

THE PRESIDENT: I am thrilled to be back in Aggieland. (Applause.) And it's always an honor to be introduced by the President of the United States -- especially when he's your Dad. And how about Mom? Mom, I've been meaning to say this publicly for a long time -- thanks, thanks for the gray hair. (Laughter.)

I congratulate the graduates of the Fighting Texas Aggie Classes of 2008 -- (applause) -- class of 2007 -- (applause) -- the class of 2006 -- I'd better stop. (Laughter.) Let's just say that I hope there's no one left from when I spoke to the commencement in 1998. (Laughter.) If so, I hope you're walking out of here with a Ph.D. (Laughter.)

I am grateful to the faculty and staff of Texas A&M for their devotion to learning and their example of scholarship. I appreciate your outstanding President, Dr. Elsa Murano. And I am glad to be with -- there you go. (Applause.) And I am glad to travel from Washington today with three fine Aggies representing Texas in the United States Congress -- Congressmen Chet Edwards, Joe Barton, and Jeb Hensarling. (Applause.)

I am pleased to see so many of your families and loved ones here today. While you bled maroon, they bled a lot of green. (Laughter.) So please join me in thanking all those whose support made it possible for you to reach this proud day. (Applause.)

There is one person who wishes he could be here today -- and that's your former President, and America's Secretary of Defense, Bob Gates. (Applause.) You know, he's got an excused absence. It's not like he's over at the Dixie Chicken. (Laughter.) He's traveling to the Middle East, consulting with our generals, and showing his support for the men and women of the United States Armed Forces. (Applause.)

When I asked Bob to be the Secretary of Defense, it was clear how much he loved Texas A&M. After all, he refused to come to Washington until after he attended the winter commencement. And I was even more impressed when he insisted on standing during the Cabinet meetings -- (laughter) -- claiming he was the "12th Man." (Laughter.) One day, he explained it all. He said: "Mr. President, I'm red ass." (Applause.)

I'll say this for A&M -- you've got some mighty fine traditions. (Applause.) Back in my day, I think I would have enjoyed dunking my ring. (Applause.) I would have loved to have taken Laura to "midnight yell." (Applause.) I especially like the traditions around Reveille. Anytime she barks during a class lecture, everyone in the room is dismissed. (Applause.) I wish she had been there for some of those press conferences. (Laughter and applause.)

This campus is home to solemn rituals that demonstrate the strength of your bonds. In playing of Silver Taps to honor fallen classmates, in the reunion of students and alumni to read the roll call at Muster, and in wearing of your timeless rings, you affirm a powerful truth: Once an Aggie, always an Aggie. (Applause.)

Traditions like these are central to the A&M experience. And so is academic excellence, and all of you will benefit from your rigorous courses of study. I suspect you'll also find that some of your most important learning took place outside the classroom -- in the friendships you formed, perspective you gained, and the things you discovered about yourselves. When you leave this campus, you will be well prepared for any endeavor you choose. To those of you who have jobs lined up, I -- congratulations. To those not exactly sure what comes next -- I know how you feel. (Laughter and applause.)

As our days in the White House wind down, we're going through a series of "lasts." I pardoned my last Thanksgiving turkey. Laura decorated for her last Christmas in the White House. And Barney bit his last reporter. (Laughter.) Or at least that's what we hope. (Laughter.)

This is also my last commencement address as President. (Applause.) And it is fitting that it takes place here in Texas, where I have been so blessed over the years. I was raised here by wonderful parents, surrounded by brothers and sisters whose love still sustains me. And Texas is where I went to a backyard barbeque and met a beautiful teacher named Laura Welch. Texas is where our girls were born and our lifelong friends live. And next month, when our time in Washington is done, Texas is where we're coming home. (Applause.)

These days, I'm asked a lot about my time as President. Some days have been happy, some days not so happy -- every day joyous. It's been a tremendous privilege. I have traveled across our nation, and to 74 countries around the world. I have slept in Buckingham Palace; I have feasted in the desert of Abu Dhabi; I've watched the sunrise in Jerusalem. I have spoken to campaign rallies in packed stadiums, and to hundreds of thousands in Romania's Revolution Square. I've taken Marine One into America's biggest cities, and visited many of our smallest towns. Through it all, nothing has inspired me more than the character of the American people -- the acts of courage and service that sustain our free society, and make this the greatest nation on Earth. (Applause.)

Courage and service are cherished here at A&M, and they are values that I hope will guide you for the years to come. So this morning, I thought I would share a few of the most powerful examples of courage and service that I have witnessed over the past eight years.

No act of courage or service is more impressive than volunteering for the United States military. Eight years ago, a brave 17-year-old named Christian Bagge made that noble choice when he stepped forward to join the Oregon National Guard. In 2005, Christian's unit was on patrol in Iraq when his Humvee hit a roadside bomb. He lost both his legs, and he thought he would lose his life. But with determination and superb medical care, this good man survived.

I met him at Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. He told me he used to be a runner and he planned to run again. I was impressed by his courage, but it was hard to imagine a man with such severe injuries ever being able to run. I said to him offhandedly, you know, when you're ready to run just call me, I'll be glad to run with you -- and moved on.

Well, then one day, a phone call came to the Oval Office. It was Christian. He said, "I'm ready to take you up on your offer, Mr. President." Just five months after I'd seen him in the hospital, he showed up at the White House with legs made of carbon fiber -- and a spirit stronger than steel. Together, we took a lap around the South Lawn. I'll admit, he left his Commander-In-Chief in the dust. (Laughter.) And he left me with great admiration for his unshakable determination, his upbeat spirit, and his inspiring example for all Americans. (Applause.)

People like Christian show the true strength of our military -- and so do the families who support them. Last year in Reno, Nevada, I met a orthopedic surgeon named Bill Krissoff. His son Nathan, a Marine, had given his life in Iraq. Dr. Krissoff told me he wanted to join the Navy Medical Corps in Nathan's honor. I looked at this remarkable man, I said: "How old are you?" He said he was 60 years old. He needed a special waiver to qualify for the Navy. I was thinking I'm 61, so he didn't sound all that old. (Laughter.) I asked his wife what she thought of the whole thing, and she said she supported his decision. So I went back to Washington -- and surprisingly enough, a few days later the waiver came through.

Since then, Dr. Krissoff has undergone extensive training in battlefield medicine. And soon he will deploy to Iraq, where he'll help save the wounded, uphold the legacy of his fallen son, and inspire the United States of America. (Applause.)

Petty Officer Greg Guillory is also in the Navy. But that is not the only way he serves. Greg lost his mother in a car accident at a young age, and his stepmother suffered from a serious drug addiction. Greg earned a four-year scholarship to play college football -- he was a high school player here in the state of Texas. But he turned down that scholarship so he could stay home to help his family confront its problems. Eventually, he decided to join the Navy, where he found a strong and supportive environment.

While stationed in San Diego, Greg met his wife Shonda, who had also endured a painful childhood. Together, they resolved to help children trapped in difficult circumstances, and made the selfless and compassionate decision to become foster parents. They spent a year caring for a 17-year-old who been abused. Then they took in a 14-year-old who had been beaten, then a baby born with drugs in her system, and then a three-year-old whose mother was in jail. Today they are caring for two children, a brother and sister, as well as the baby girl Shonda delivered last month.

And all the while, Greg has been carrying out his duties in uniform. He is stationed at Camp David, Maryland -- and this generous man who has given so much to others feels so grateful himself. During a moving testimony at the Camp David chapel that I was fortunate enough to witness this past Thanksgiving, he said: "I am thankful that God continues to bless me so I can be a blessing for children in need."

America is blessed to have citizens like Greg and Shonda, whose hearts are big enough to share the greatest gift of all -- the gift of love. (Applause.)

Kendrick Kennedy shared that gift, too, after Hurricane Katrina struck his hometown of Biloxi, Mississippi. Even though his own house had been damaged, Kendrick put others first -- helping family members find shelter, and cleaning up debris in neighbors' yards. There's another piece of the story: Kendrick is blind. A few years before the storm, he lost his sight -- and his job. But he refused to let that hold him back. He enrolled at Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College. I met him there when I spoke at his commencement. He went on to the University of Southern Mississippi, where he became the first blind student to graduate summa cum laude. Now he's in law school in Ole Miss. And this good man has set a high goal -- to serve our country as a justice on the Supreme Court. (Applause.)

Other Americans show courage by summoning the hidden strength to overcome their weaknesses. Four years ago, I met Letitia Chavez-Paulette. She had been addicted to drugs; she served time for her mistakes. While in prison, she joined a faith-based program called Celebrate Recovery, and to help turn her life around. When she was released, Letitia was determined to support other women returning to society. So she started a transitional home called "A Peaceful Habitation" -- a name taken from the Book of Isaiah. Here's what Letitia said: "God's grace has kept me going. His love has kept me strong. And my faith is a gift that is helping me help others."

In these stories, we see the courage and service that defined America at its best. And that same spirit has long defined Texas A&M. It's the spirit of General Earl Rudder, who helped lead the D-Day invasion and served more than a decade as A&M's president. It is the spirit of the Corps of Cadet, which includes nearly 1,800 Aggies. It is the spirit of your ROTC program, which routinely commissions more officers than any school outside the service academies. It's the spirit of the 21 Aggies who've given their lives to keep America safe since September the 11th, 2001 -- a sacrifice that will be honored forever by your "Freedom from Terrorism" memorial.

That same spirit is visible on this campus in many ways beyond the military. A&M is home to "The Big Event" -- the largest student-run community service project in the nation. After Hurricane Ike hit the Texas coast, you welcomed more than 1,600 "Sea Aggies" from A&M's Galveston campus to College Station. And in countless other acts of volunteerism and charity, you have made Texas A&M's name synonymous with service.

On your last day as A&M students, my call to you is to continue this spirit long after you leave the campus. There are so many needs to be met, and so many ways you can help -- from mentoring a child to becoming a teacher, to volunteering to feed the hungry or heal the sick overseas. If you hear the call to service in the military or government, answer it. If you enter the private sector, be proud of contributing to our prosperity -- and give back to your communities. Wherever life leads you, pursue the path of service -- and you will find fulfillment beyond measure.

As you embark on this journey, let me leave you with a few last pieces of advice. First, listen to your mother. (Laughter and applause.) As you can see, Mom is out of the hospital and everything is back to normal. After all, she's still telling me what to do. (Laughter.)

Second, develop a set of principles to live by -- convictions and ideals to guide your course. There will be times when people tell you a different way is more accepted or popular. Remember that popularity is as fleeting as the Texas wind. Character and conscience are as sturdy as the oaks on this campus. If you go home at night, look in the mirror and be satisfied that you have done what is right, you will pass the only test that matters. (Applause.)

And finally, be on the lookout for role models -- people whose conduct you admire and whose paths you can follow. With that in mind, I have one last example of courage and service. It's a story of a young man who left comfort behind to answer his nation's call, became the youngest pilot in the Navy, and nearly gave his life in World War II. When he came back home, he devoted his career to public service, and proved that success in politics can be accomplished with decency and grace. He reached the pinnacle in government, but he defines his life by other roles -- a father who gave unconditional love, a grandfather devoted to his grandchildren, and a beloved husband of the sweetheart he married a lifetime ago. Some of you will leave A&M with a degree that carries this good man's name -- George Bush. I have been blessed and honored to have carried it for 62 years. (Applause.)

I want to thank you. I want to thank you for the opportunity to share this special day with you. I congratulate you. When I leave office next month, I will depart confident in the future of our country, because I have faith in each of you. I will depart uplifted by the many acts of courage and service that I have witnessed these past eight years. I will depart grateful for the outpouring of support and prayers that have strengthened Laura and me. And I will depart ready to come home to the people I have missed and the place I love -- the state of Texas. (Applause.)

And so, after all this, there is only one thing left to say: Gig'em Aggies! (Applause.) Congratulations, and may God bless you. (Applause.)

NEW ORLEANS - Questions about the military service of Indiana Sen. Dan Quayle renewed memories Thursday of the agonizing choices young men made during the Vietnam era.

Vietnam represented not only conflict overseas but conflict at home. During the Vietnam War - 1964 to 1973 - more than 26 million American men faced the possibility of being drafted and hard choices about whether to participate in the nation's military.

More than 2 million men and women went to Vietnam, of whom 153,300 were wounded and 58,153 were killed. But an estimated 90,000 young men refused induction into the service or fled the draft by moving to Canada and other countries. Thousands of others opted to continue their personal lives and reduce the risk of seeing combat by joining armed forces reserves and the National Guard.

In 1969, a year when 283,586 young men were drafted, 22-year-old Danny Quayle graduated from DePauw University and lost his draft deferment. He wanted to go on to law school, so he joined the Indiana National Guard.

Now that he has become Vice President George Bush's choice for a GOP presidential running mate, questions occurred about whether Quayle, the heir of a newspaper fortune and a conservative advocate of a strong national defense, used undue family influence to avoid the draft by obtaining a hard-to-get spot in the National Guard.

"The thing that's important, I want you all to remember: He did not go to Canada," said the vice president's son George W. Bush. "Let's keep it in generational perspective."

George W. Bush

XLIII President of the United States: 2001 - 2009

Commencement Address at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas

December 12, 2008

Courage and service are cherished here at A&M, and they are values that I hope will guide you for the years to come. So this morning, I thought I would share a few of the most powerful examples of courage and service that I have witnessed over the past 8 years.

I said to him offhandedly, "You know, when you're ready to run, just call me. I'll be glad to run with you," and moved on.

Well, then one day, a phone call came to the Oval Office. It was Christian. He said, "I'm ready to take you up on your offer, Mr. President." Just 5 months after I'd seen him in the hospital, he showed up at the White House with legs made of carbon fiber and a spirit stronger than steel. Together, we took a lap around the South Lawn. I'll admit, he left his Commander in Chief in the dust. [Laughter] And he left me with great admiration for his unshakable determination, his upbeat spirit, and his inspiring example for all Americans.

People like Christian show the true strength of our military, and so do the families who support them. Last year in Reno, Nevada, I met a orthopedic surgeon named Bill Krissoff. His son Nathan, a marine, had given his life in Iraq.

Dwight D. Eisenhower

XXXIV President of the United States: 1953 - 1961

166 - Remarks on Presentation of the Medal of Freedom to Lewis L. Strauss, and Accompanying Citation.

July 14, 1958

Good morning, ladies and gentlemen.

Lewis, we have met here this morning to mark the passing of a distinguished public servant from one office into another. It would be completely impossible for me to express the appreciation that I feel--and I am sure the country feels--of the work that you have done over these past years.

I believe you have been a world leader in the preparation of America for all eventualities that may arise. At the same time, you have not forgotten that the nuclear science can be mankind's greatest boon. If the political thinking of our governments will allow us to proceed in that way, I think you have marked very definitely the channels, the directions, that all of us should follow.

So, this is a little ceremony, as I say, to mark the dropping of that kind of work and then to take over--as my Special Assistant--more emphatically and more specifically this work of promoting the atom as a peaceful agency for the world. I am going to ask, first, Governor Adams to read the Citation that has been prepared.

[ Governor Adams read the following ]

CITATION TO ACCOMPANY THE AWARD OF

THE MEDAL Of FREEDOM

TO

LEWIS L. STRAUSS

To LEWIS L. STRAUSS for exceptionally meritorious service in the interests of the security of the United States

During a crucial period, he has provided leadership, resourcefulness, judgment and courage equal to the immense demands and promise of the atomic age.

His direct contribution to the security of the United States and other free world nations has been outstanding. He was an effective supporter of the development of thermonuclear technology at a time when a less determined and imaginative course might have resulted in severe damage to our security and that of the free world. He initiated a long-range detection system for atomic explosions which adds both to our safety and to our hopes for successful disarmament negotiations.

Equally significant has been his work in helping build the long-term security that comes of devoting the Atom to works of peace. Under his guidance, peaceful use of atomic energy for power, research, healing, agriculture, and production has made remarkable progress. He has played a great part in bringing to reality the International Scientific Conference on Peaceful Uses, and the Atoms for Peace program, now being put into effect through the International Atomic Energy Agency.

Through his wisdom and foresight, his country enjoys greater security today and greater hopes for genuine peace in the years ahead. In recognition of his distinguished service, I take pleasure in awarding the Medal of freedom to Lewis L. Strauss.

DWIGHT D. EISENHOWER

Note: The President presented the Medal of freedom to Mr. Strauss at a ceremony in the Conference Room at the White House at 11:45 a.m. Mr. Strauss served as Chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission from July 2, 1953, to June 30, 1958. His response follows:

Mr. President, I am deeply grateful for this honor. I am grateful that so many of my friends have come here this morning to see me receive it. But particularly I want to say how much I appreciate the opportunity that I have had to serve under you in this connection and to testify to the inspiration which I have derived from service near your desk.

To be the recipient of this Medal and of the flood of letters and messages of goodwill that I have received has changed one concept of my attitude towards government service. It is not--I repeat not--a thankless task.
Thank you.

Then we broke up into groups of three to practice and this one guy said something about making breakfast in bed for me. The American Presidency Project

William J. Clinton

XLII President of the United States: 1993 - 2001

Remarks at the Dedication of the Central Museum for the Great Patriotic War in Moscow, Russia

May 9, 1995

President Yeltsin, Mr. Prime Minister, Prime Mr. Mayor—[inaudible]—the veterans of the Minister Major—[inaudible]—Shevardnadze, Great Patriotic War. We come together today as friends to celebrate our shared victory over fascism, to remember the sacrifice of those of you who made it possible, and to fulfill the promise of an enduring peace that shown so brightly, but all too briefly, 50 years ago today.

Brave men and women from our nations fought a common enemy with uncommon valor. Theirs was a partnership forged in battle, strengthened by sacrifice, cemented by blood. Their extraordinary effort speaks to us still of all that is possible when our people are joined in a just cause.

With me today is an American veteran of the Great War, Lieutenant William Robertson. As the war entered its final days, Lieutenant Robertson's patrol sighted troops led by Lieutenant Aleksander Sylvashko across the Elbe River. Crawling toward each other on the girders of a wrecked bridge, these two officers met at the midpoint and embraced in triumph. They exchanged photographs of wives, children, loved ones, whose freedom they had defended, whose future they would secure. The Americans did not speak Russian, and the Russians did not speak English, but they shared a language of joy.

The Americans at the Elbe remember how their new Russian friends danced that night, but how their jubilation turned solemn, because each of them had lost someone, a family member, a loved one, a friend. One out of every eight Soviet citizens was killed, soldiers in battle; prisoners, by disease or starvation; innocent children who could find no refuge. In all of the 27 million people who lost their lives to the war, there were Russians and Belarussians, Uzbekhs and Jews, Ukrainians, Armenians, Georgians, and more. These numbers numb the mind and defy comprehension.

I say to you, President Yeltsin, and to all the people of Russia and the other republics of the former Soviet Union, the cold war obscured our ability to fully appreciate what your people had suffered and how your extraordinary courage helped to hasten the victory we all celebrate today. Now we must all say, you wrote some of the greatest chapters in the history of heroism, at Leningrad, in the battle for Moscow, in the defense of Stalingrad, and in the assault on Berlin, where your country lost 300,000 casualties in only 14 days.

I have come here today on behalf of all the people of the United States to express our deep gratitude for all that you gave and all that you lost to defeat the forces of fascism. In victory's afterglow, the dream of peace soon gave way to the reality of the cold war, but now Russia has opened itself to new freedoms. We have an opportunity and an obligation to rededicate ourselves today to the promise of that moment 50 years ago when Europe's guns fell silent.

Just as Russians and Americans fought together 50 years ago against the common evil, so today we must fight for the common good. We must work for an end to the awful savagery of war and the senseless violence of terrorism. We must work for the creation of a united, prosperous Europe. We must work for the freedom of all of our people to live up to their God-given potential. These are our most sacred tasks and our most solemn obligations.

This is what we owe to the brave veterans who brought tears to our eyes when they marched together with such pride and courage in Red Square today. And this is what we owe to the generations of our children still to be born. Let us do our duty, as the veterans of World War II did theirs.

Thank you.

NOTE: The President spoke at 1:55 p.m. at the Poklonnaya Gora Monument. In his remarks, he referred to President Boris Yeltsin of Russia, Prime Minister John Major of the United Kingdom, Chairman Eduard Shevardnadze of the Republic of Georgia, and Mayor Uri Luzhkov of Moscow.

Plot Summary

After stealing a loaf a bread to feed a starving family, Jean Valjean is sentenced to ten years at hard labor as a galley slave. There he is taught to read and write by another prisoner and meets Javert, an obsessive policeman who was himself born to convict parents aboard a prison ship. After his release, Valjean is treated as a pariah but finally finds shelter in the home of a kindly bishop. Valjean repays the clergyman's generosity by stealing his silver plate. He is apprehended by the authorities and returned to the bishop but is amazed when the kindly old priest tells them that the valuable plates were a gift. This becomes a transforming experience for the ex-convict, who establishes himself under an assumed name in a small country village as factory manager and ultimately mayor. Unfortunately the newly-promoted Javert is assigned there as chief inspector. Although he doesn't recognize his old nemesis at first, the two clash over Javert's overzealous prosecution of the letter of the law. When a mentally challenged homeless man is arrested and accused of being Valjean, the conscience-ridden parole violator reveals his true identity to the court and the already suspicious Javert. Valjean is forced to abandon his property and with his adopted daughter again flee the relentless pursuit of Javert.

felony murder doctrine

a rule of criminal statutes that any death which occurs during the commission of a felony is first degree murder, and all participants in that felony or attempted felony can be charged with and found guilty of murder. A typical example is a robbery involving more than one criminal, in which one of them shoots, beats to death or runs over a store clerk, killing the clerk. Even if the death were accidental, all of the participants can be found guilty of felony murder, including those who did no harm, had no gun, and/or did not intend to hurt anyone.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Felony_murder_rule

Felony murder rule

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The rule of felony murder is a legal doctrine in some common law jurisdictions that broadens the crime of murder in two ways. First, when an offender kills accidentally or without specific intent to kill in the commission of a felony, the offender can be charged with murder. Second, it makes any participant in such a felony criminally liable for any deaths that occur during or in furtherance of that felony.

While there is debate about the original scope of the rule, modern interpretations typically require that the felony be an inherently dangerous one, or one committed in an obviously dangerous manner. For this reason, the felony murder rule is often justified by its supporters as a means of deterring dangerous felonies.

According to some commentators, the common law rule dates to the twelfth century and took its modern form in the eighteenth century. Critics of the rule argue that the rule is unjust because it requires no intent to kill. In favor of the rule, it can be argued that the rule affirms for principle of the sanctity of human life by imposing harsher penalties for crimes that destroy human life.

Criticism for the memoir, titled "Dutch: A Memoir of Ronald Reagan," also continued to erupt Tuesday from the political side as former President George Bush denied Morris' claim that he and his wife were unwelcome "upstairs" in the Reagan White House when he was vice president.

"That's ridiculous," he said in an interview shown on NBC's "Today."

"Upstairs? I mean that's a kind of English, upstairs-and-downstairs approach to life. "I don't even use the terminology."

Morris writes of a Christmas Eve 1988 conversation he said he had with the Bushes a month before Bush became president.

"I really love that guy, he's such a terrific fellow," Bush -- Reagan's vice president -- is quoted as saying. Morris then quotes Bush as commenting about Reagan and his wife, Nancy: "I kinda wished they'd shown -- 'y'know, a little appreciation. Didn't seem to want us upstairs in the White House."

20 – The Dance of the Vampires

Toland cringed as the new contacts were plotted. "Admiral, we've been had."

The group tactical warfare officer was pale as he toggled his microphone. "Air Warning Red. Weapons free! Threat axis is two-one-seven. All ships turn as necessary to unmask batteries."

The Tomcats had all been drawn off, leaving the formation practically naked. The only armed fighters over the formation were Foch's eight Crusaders, long since retired from the American inventory. On a terse command from their carrier, they went to afterburner and rocketed southwest toward the Backfires. Too late.

The Bear already had a clear picture of the American formations. The Russians could not determine ship type, but they could tell large from small, and identify the missile cruiser Ticonderoga by her distinctive radar emissions. The carriers would be close to her. The Bear relayed the information to her consorts. A minute later, the seventy Backfire bombers launched their hundred forty AS-6 Kingfish missiles and turned north at full military power. The Kingfish was nothing like the Kelt. Powered by a liquid-fuel rocket engine, it accelerated to nine hundred knots and began its descent, its radar-homing head tracking on a preprogrammed target area ten miles wide. Every ship in the center of the formation had several missiles assigned.

"Vampire, Vampire!" the CIC talker said aboard Ticonderoga. "We have numerous incoming missiles. Weapons free."

The group antiair warfare officer ordered the cruiser's Aegis weapons system into full automatic mode. Tico had been built with this exact situation in mind. Her powerful radar/computer system immediately identified the incoming missiles as hostile and assigned each a priority of destruction. The computer was completely on its own, free to fire on its electronic will at anything diagnosed as a threat. Numbers, symbols, and vectors paraded across the master tactical display. The fore and aft twin missile launchers trained out at the first targets and awaited the orders to fire. Aegis was state-of-the-art, the best SAM system yet devised

What happened?

1:52:21
Seal must've broken in there.

1:52:24
They had the same thing at the lunar lab.

1:52:26
That's why we use polycron gaskets here.

1:52:28
At least the rest of Wildfire is secure.

1:52:33
Poor devil.

1:52:35
Look at the way he's breathing.

1:52:37
He's scared to death.

1:52:39
That oxygen should relax him,

1:52:41
slow down his breathing.

1:52:43
No, we want him to breathe fast!

1:52:45
In Piedmont, Jackson
was crocked on Sterno.

1:52:46
Sterno acidosis.

1:52:47
Acidosis: Rapid breathing.

1:52:49
What the hell you doing?

1:52:50
Turn off the oxygen.
Put him on room air.

1:52:52
The baby, he's normal.

1:52:53
Cries all the time.

1:52:53
Can't catch his breath.

1:52:54
Rapid breathing?

1:52:55
It just can't be that simple.

1:52:56
It isn't.

1:52:57
Dutton, I think rapid breathing helps.

1:53:00
Don't let the bug in
your lungs long enough

1:53:02
to penetrate blood vessels.

1:53:03
I want to turn off the pure oxygen,

1:53:05
then you start breathing
room air as fast as you can.

1:53:07
No! No.

1:53:08
I was running a test in here.

1:53:11
The air is thick with Andromeda.

1:53:12
Experiment with your own life, damn it!

The red algae must have come from the lake, which could have gotten toxified from everything we've been dumping in it, not to mention, um, pesticides, trash fires, trapped exhaust from cars.

Quotes

[last lines]

Senator from Vermont: This cloud-seeding business, Stone... you absolutely sure it worked? You better be.

Dr. Jeremy Stone: All reports continue to indicate that the experiment was successful, Senator.

Senator from Vermont: Then we can feel confident your so-called "biological crisis" is over?

Dr. Jeremy Stone: As far as Andromeda is concerned, yes. We have the organism at Wildfire, and we continue to study it. We know now beyond a doubt that other forms of life exist in the universe.

Senator from Vermont: Thanks to Scoop?

Dr. Jeremy Stone: Yes.

[pause]

Dr. Jeremy Stone: However, with this new knowledge, there is no guarantee that another so-called "biological crisis" won't occur again.

Senator from Vermont: Hmm. What do we do about that?

Dr. Jeremy Stone: Precisely, Senator. What do we do?

Childhood's what makes ya

See mirages of friendship, face turns read
Here's the soon to be anchor
Build bridges to nothing, you'll get nowhere
Every governor's mother knows

And what about science?

Back to the Beginning with Singh's 'Big Bang'

by Scott Simon

February 19, 2005

Author Simon Singh's new book is Big Bang: The Origin of the Universe. The author speculates about what came before the birth of the universe, and what may eventually happen at its end.

An Excerpt from 'Big Bang'

In 1948, George Gamow and his student Ralph Alpher tried to show that the Big Bang model of creation could explain the abundances of the light elements in the universe, such as hydrogen and helium.

As each month passed, Ralph Alpher became increasingly convinced that he could accurately model the formation of helium in the few minutes after the Big Bang. His confidence increased when he found that his calculations agreed closely with reality. Alpher estimated that there should be roughly one helium nucleus for every ten hydrogen nuclei at the end of the Big Bang nucleosynthesis phase, which is exactly what astronomers observed in the modern universe. In other words, the Big Bang could explain the ratio of hydrogen to helium that we see today. Alpher had not yet seriously attempted to model the formation of other elements, but even predicting the formation of hydrogen and helium in the observed proportions was in itself a highly significant achievement. After all, these two elements accounted for 99.99% of all the atoms in the universe.

Keen to announce their breakthrough, George Gamow and Ralph Alpher set out their calculations and conclusions in a formal paper entitled 'The Origin of Chemical Elements', and submitted it to the journal Physical Review. It was due for publication on 1 April 1948, and perhaps this was what spurred Gamow to do something he had been secretly considering for many months. Gamow was a close friend of Hans Bethe, who was famous for his work on stellar nuclear reactions, and he wanted to add Bethe's name to the list of authors, even though he had contributed nothing to this particular research paper. His motivation for adding the extra name was that readers could enjoy the sight of a paper authored by Alpher, Bethe and Gamow, a pun on the Greek letters alpha (a), beta (b) and gamma (g).

Not surprisingly, Alpher took exception. He feared that crediting Bethe would diminish how the rest of world perceived his own contribution to the research. Alpher's name was already overshadowed by Gamow's co-authorship, because Alpher was the young Ph.D. student and Gamow the famous physicist, and adding Bethe's even more eminent name would only make things worse for him. Alpher had done more than his fair share of the work, and now it seemed that he was going to receive only a tiny fraction of the credit.

The paper was posted off for publication, which meant that Gamow could now relax a little, but Alpher still had plenty of work to do. This research was Alpher's Ph.D. project, so he had to write it up independently and in excruciating detail to demonstrate that he was worthy of a doctorate and was fit to climb the academic ladder. Once he had written his thesis, Alpher then had to undergo the ordeal of defending it. He would have to sit alone in front a panel of experts and convince them that hydrogen and helium could have been created in the correct proportions in the moments after the Big Bang. He also wanted to argue that there was a reasonable chance that other atoms could also have been created during this phase. Essentially, he was going to defend the results of his collaboration with Gamow, but relying solely on his own wits, unable to turn to his mentor for advice. If he succeeded, he would be awarded his Ph.D.

Such thesis defences are often public occasions, but it is not a spectator sport with mass appeal, so the audience tends to be just friends, close family and a few academics with a particular interest in the subject. In this case, however, news that a twenty-seven-year-old novice had made a major breakthrough had spread across Washington, and Alpher found himself arguing his case before a packed audience of three hundred, including newspaper reporters. At the end of his defence, the examiners were sufficiently convinced to award Alpher his doctorate.

Meanwhile, reporters had taken special note of one of Alpher's comments - that the primordial nucleosynthesis of hydrogen and helium had taken only 300 seconds. And that was what made the headlines in newspapers all across America over the next few days. On 14 April 1948, The Washington Post announced WORLD BEGAN IN 5 MINUTES. For few weeks Alpher enjoyed a degree of celebrity. Academics showed interest in his work, a curious public sent him fan mail and religious fundamentalists prayed for his soul.

However, the spotlight soon faded and, as he suspected, he became lost in the shadow of his illustrious co-authors, Gamow and Bethe. When physicists read the paper they assumed that Gamow and Bethe were responsible for the major breakthrough, and Alpher's name was overlooked. The spurious addition of Bethe's name for comic effect had extinguished any hope that Alpher may have had for some long-term recognition. Today, even physicists are largely unaware of Alpher's crucial role in the history of the Big Bang model.

Red Storm Rising

40 – The Killing Ground

Again the Vampire call came in, and again Toland cringed. Twenty incoming missiles were plotted. The formation activated jammers and SAM systems, with a pair of Aegis cruisers on the threat axis. In seconds they were launching missiles, and the other SM2-equipped SAM ships added their own missiles to the "basket," allowing their birds to be guided by the Aegis computer systems. The twenty incoming missiles had ninety SM2s targeted on them. Only three got through the SAM cloud, and only one of them headed for a carrier. America's three point-defense guns tracked the AS-6 and destroyed it a thousand feet from the ship. The other two missiles both found the cruiser Wainwright and exploded her four miles from Independence.

"Beach Side Property"

"Wow!" said the broken Californian down
On the beach that used to be by the beach
Town hasn't moved but's getting closer, losing ground
Making better views and close relaxing sounds
Ground sure don't like the way it's treated so now
It's moving back to the sea
Plan to hitch a ride with the river
Cuz deep down plumbing life is too cramped for me
I got wood legs and bow legs and no legs at all
Goddamn! Would you accept a collect call?
Oh no, I don't understand
I got sore eyes and poor eyes and no eyes at all
Goddamn! Would you like to take a fall?
No I don't like this plan
It was a staple of brass tacks and waxed backs
A memo left on the forehead of God
Sent sealed and signed by the saints who sang this song:
"We're going union like they say
We'll buy the congregation
Then one day, you'll find us sitting
in your chairs with big ideas of stocks and shares."

I just wanted to catch the last laugh of this show.

Yeah, it would've been, could've been worse than you would ever know.
Oh, the dashboard melted, but we still have the radio.

Hard-wired to conceive, so much we'd have to stow it
Even needs have needs, tiny giants made of tinier giants.
Don't wear eyelids so I don't miss the last laugh of this show.

Oh, we could've been, should've been worse than you would ever know.
(The dashboard melted but we still have the radio)
Well, you told me about nowhere well it sounds like someplace I'd like to go-oh-oh-oh-oh.
Now here we go!

Well we scheme and we scheme but we always blow it
We've yet to crash, but we still might as well tow it
Standing at a light switch to each east and west horizon,
Every dawn you're surprising,

King County Water District #90

15606 SE 128th Street

Renton, WA 98059

About Us

District History/Overview

King County Water District No. 90 was incorporated on August 12, 1952, with a Water Service Area of approximately five square miles. The primary reason for the formation of the District was due to problems with wells located in the service area. During the summer months, many of the wells would become dry or stagnant. In the spring of 1956, after four years of planning, the District began to supply water to approximately 250 customers. Since that time the District has grown to its present size of just over 7,000 direct service connections in a service area of approximately 15 square miles (9,770 acres). As of December 31, 2009, the District is servicing over 7,100 accounts. The majority of the connections are single-family residential, but the District also serves commercial, irrigation and school service accounts.

The system is divided into 14 separate pressure zones in order to maintain adequate pressures throughout the service area. Under typical (non-emergency) operating conditions, the District relies on Seattle Public Utilities (SPU) for approximately 70% of its water supply. The District provides the other 30% of its water supply from a groundwater well and treatment facility that it operates and maintains. The District maintains and operates eight storage reservoirs, eight pump stations, one treatment facility, seventeen pressure reducing stations and over 110 miles of transmission and distribution mains to provide high quality service to all the areas of the District in accordance with District standards and applicable regulations.

We mustn't annoy Mr Carpenter, or he won't want to stay here.
He's really a dear little boy, and quiet as a mouse.
- You're a long way from home, aren't you? - How did you know?
Oh. I can tell a New England accent a mile away.
Now we take you to Miami Beach, Florida, fork report from Gabriel Heatter.
Mr Heatter?
And now on this Sunday morning we ask some questions
that have been haunting the entire nation for two whole days.
This creature: where is he? What is he up to?
If he can build a spaceship that can fly to Earth,
and a robot that can destroy our tanks and guns,
what other terrors can he unleash at will?
Obviously, the monster must be found.
He must be tracked down like a wild animal.
He must be destroyed.
But where would such a creature hide?
Would he disappear into the north woods?
Would he crawl into the sewers of some great city?
Everybody agrees there is grave danger.
The question remains: what can we do to protect ourselves?
What measures can we take to neutralize this menace from another world?

Maybe he isn't home.
Gee, I'll bet you this is where he works.
What's that stuff on the blackboard mean?
It's a problem in celestial mechanics.
I'll bet he's the only one that knows the answer.
He doesn't know the answer. And he'll never get it that way.
We probably couldn't get to see him even if he was home.
Hey, where are you going?
If he's that difficult to see, perhaps we ought to leave a calling card.
Did he do it wrong?
He just needs a little help.
What are you doing in here?
How dare you write on that blackboard!
Do you realize the professor's worked on that problem for weeks?
He'll solve it in no time now.
- How did you get in? What do you want? - To see Professor Barnhardt.
Well, he's not here. And he won't be back till this evening.
I think you'd better leave now.
Would you give this to the professor?
I think he'll want to talk to me.
I wouldn't erase that. The professor needs it very badly.

Jane Wyman

(born Jan. 5, 1917, St. Joseph, Mo.—died Sept. 10, 2007, Rancho Mirage, Calif.), American actress who had a long, distinguished career in film and television, but she was perhaps equally well known as the first wife (1940–48) of former president Ronald Reagan. Wyman was a singer on the radio, appeared in the choruses of movie musicals and in bit parts, and starred in a number of B movies before her portrayal of an alcoholic’s girlfriend in The Lost Weekend (1945) proved to be her breakthrough as a dramatic actress. After starring in The Yearling (1946), for which she received her first Academy Award nomination, Wyman won the best actress Oscar for her portrayal of a deaf rape victim in Johnny Belinda (1948); she also won Oscar nominations for her roles in The Blue Veil (1951) and Magnificent Obsession (1954). Other notable films included The Glass Menagerie (1950) and All That Heaven Allows (1955). Wyman then branched out into television with the anthology series Jane Wyman Presents the Fireside Theatre (1955–58); she often hosted and starred in various episodes of the show. She semiretired but made a few more motion pictures, including Pollyanna (1960), and occasional guest appearances on television. Wyman returned to prominence and found a new audience with the TV series Falcon Crest (1981–90), in which she starred as the domineering matriarch Angela Channing, owner of a California winery.

COLDPLAY

"The Scientist"

Come up to meet you, tell you I'm sorry
You don't know how lovely you are
I had to find you, tell you I need you
Tell you I'll set you apart

Tell me your secrets and ask me your questions
Oh let's go back to the start
Running in circles, coming in tails
Heads on a science apart

Nobody said it was easy
It's such a shame for us to part
Nobody said it was easy
No one ever said it would be this hard
Oh, take me back to the start.
