Stephen King

The Stand - The Complete & Uncut Edition

Chapter 21

Stu Redman was frightened.

He looked out the barred window of his new room in Stovington, Vermont, and what he saw was a small town far below, miniature gas station signs, some sort of mill, a main street, a river, the turnpike, and beyond the turnpike the granite backbone of far western New England—the Green Mountains.

He was frightened because this was more like a jail cell than a hospital room. He was frightened because Denninger was gone. He hadn’t seen Denninger since the whole crazy three-ring circus moved from Atlanta to here. Deitz was gone, too. Stu thought that maybe Denninger and Deitz were sick, perhaps dead already.

Somebody had slipped. Either that, or the disease that Charles D. Campion had brought to Arnette was a lot more communicable than anyone had guessed. Either way, the integrity of the Atlanta Plague Center had been breached, and Stu thought that everyone who had been there was now getting a chance to do a little firsthand research on the virus they called A-Prime or the superflu.

Ghosts Of Mars

So this is Shining Canyon? God, what a dump.
- First time in the boonies, rookie? - Standard layout.
Just another shitty boomtown like all the others.
Seen one, you can go home.
You're always cold, you can't get a decent shower...
and they don't tell you that a one-year contract here...
equals two years' Earth time.
You gotta read the fine print.

Ghosts Of Mars

Do you want me to pop the lock and ask the prisoners?
What do you mean, pop the lock? That's a level-eight security door.
I've got a mystical way with locks and mechanical objects.
There isn't a machine on Mars that doesn't love me.
How about we check with the commander first?
So what do you do for fun then? Are you a gambler?
No. I'm short-time, Sergeant. I believe in saving my money.
Don't worry about that. I was gonna do it for free.
Let me put it this way.
Maybe I'd sleep with you if you were the last man on Earth.
But we're not on Earth.
It's a voltage overload, most likely.
You want to check it out?
It's probably nothing.
But on second thought--
Police officer. Anybody there?
Shit!
- This is not making me happy. - It's time to get backup.
Jesus Christ. What are you doing?
- I almost killed you. - What's going on?
- Rec-fac's a slaughterhouse. - What?
Slaughterhouse?
That's the word Descanso used. I didn't see it myself.
According to what Commander Braddock told me...
right after we first arrived in Shining Canyon...
she and the two rookies headed towards the recreation facility.
Mel, I'll get us squared away at the rec-fac.
You and Sergeant Jericho go and check in at the jail.
Save some hot water for me.
Descanso, sweep left.
Bashira, stick with me.
Officer to train, do you read?
The casino, barracks, dining hall, rec center, no one alive anywhere.
- Commander. - What?
- I can't reach the train. - Well, keep trying.
How are we doing?
I don't know. This thing was built to stay locked.
And Williams is still locked up?
What do you mean?
Williams was arrested on the suspicion of murdering...
six rail workers and a payroll courier up at Klik 305 Hub Station.
The bodies were hung and decapitated, just like the bodies in the rec-fac.
So how'd they pin that on Desolation?
He showed up here with the courier's payroll.
The cashier realized it was a stolen scrip.
They made the arrest.
There's got to be a day log here somewhere.
Sergeant's desk.
Here.
Last night the mine called in a work stoppage.

Lieutenant, we got a situation here.
Sergeant, you're breaking up. I can hardly hear you.
The commander's dead.
Everybody in the mine has gone insane.
Jericho, can you read?
Hey, come on! Let us out of here!
Start at the beginning!

http://www.divxmoviesenglishsubtitles.com/G/Ghosts_Of_Mars.html

Ghosts Of Mars

It was me.
I opened Pandora's box. I let them out.
I contacted the train.
They're about three kliks north of town on a decoupling spur.
- They said the tracks are blocked. - Can they get through?
Yeah, they're working on it.
- You okay? - Yes.
- Barricaded the rear door. - Good.
There's a maintenance courtyard out the back enclosed by a five-meter wall.
There's even a Rover parked out there.
Maybe we can make a run for it.
No, we wait.
Bashira got in touch with the train. They're coming back for us.
Well, if a train comin', they better hurry up.
What's the matter with you? You did good out there.
Yeah, right.
It's a fucked-up situation.

Ghosts Of Mars

In semiarid regions on Earth, there are certain organisms...
that live in small pools that are formed by the annual rains.
When the pools dry up, those organisms can't live.
But they don't die either. They go dormant below the surface...
away from the hot sun until the next rain cycle begins.
Then they reemerge.
I think something like that is happening here.
I don't understand.
Whatever used to live here, we woke it up.
It takes us, okay?
I'm talking about a kind of possession.
Lieutenant, Sergeant Jericho is on the radio.
He said he found three people out there.
They're on their way in and they got an ETA of five minutes.
You should get on the radio and talk to him.
- He's found three people? - That's what he said.
- You okay? - No.
Something broken?
I'm all right.
But it's out of the body now.
Yeah, it's loose in here.

Subject: RE: Vault

Today I was walking outside to the trash compactor and my upstairs neighbor yelled out to get my attention from across the parking lot. He told me he "got a new toy."

He was referring to a blue Chevrolet pickup truck that I had noticed for several days in the parking lot in another parking space.

I noticed the pickup truck because I recognized the model as being probably a few years older than the blue 1967 Chevrolet pickup truck I owned during senior year at Ashdown High School.

Last night I dreamed about a new pickup truck I had become the owner of. The dream seemed to start with me being taken by someone to a doctor's office. The doctor seemed familiar but I cannot now recall if that was somebody I recognized in the dream. Possibly was that psychiatrist who saw me at St. Francis hospital mental health in Federal Way Washington State back in May 2005. So I was sitting in that office and I had decided this time I needed to be there. I had accepted the fact I needed medical treatment and I was going to take the pills they gave me and I was going to accept treatment. Other people started arriving too and apparently they were going to be in-patient at the same time I was and apparently when I became in-patient then I wasn't going to be able to leave until the treatment was over. Much of the dream has faded from conscious awareness now that I've been awake for a while I have been wondering all day as to the contiguity with the new apartment I was moving into. The way it worked, I think the manager of that apartment I applied for had required me to get mental health medical treatment before I could move into that new apartment. The new apartment was great and I wanted to move in there. The dream was probably influenced by a "Stargate: Atlantis" episode I watched recently where the helicopter-pilot starring character "Major Sheppard" imagines a very realistic environment where he is in his apartment back on Earth. So anyway, the apartment I dreamed of was no place I recall from active memory and in the dream it was three-bedroom and very large and that is why I think that episode influenced the dream because that was part of the episode dialog. And so there was also the new pickup truck I owned and there are elements there I have been thinking of and that remind me of another dream I had a long time about working under the hood of that red 1967 Ford pickup I owned before the Chevrolet. I have written before that I had that dream one night and after thinking about it a while I found myself here at this apartment complex a few years later and I felt almost convinced that I had dreamed of this location before I had even the slightest idea that it existed or the slightest idea I would move here.

So the only reason I am writing about this now is because that blue pickup shows up now in the parking lot.

I haven't talking much to my upstairs neighbor before. Even today I tried to avoid talking to him because I want to mention my name as less often as possible. If he's read my blog then he might recognize my name and I am trying to keep a low profile in the local area. I suspect that the management of this apartment complex have been secretly talking to reporters and they have been spreading my name around and I suspect they have a monetary gain motive for doing so.

I suspect those racketeers are trying to build a defense for themselves. I never publish my home address in my blog. There isn't much of a reasonable expectation of privacy when you tell people your precise location.

A while back, that upstairs neighbor starting saluting me when he sees me as we walk outside. One of the maintenance workers did the same thing a few days ago. That was the same maintenance who started calling me boss a long time ago. I don't think he worked here when I moved in.

I have written in my blog about an encounter with my upstairs neighbor but I didn't provide enough specific details for anyone, especially him, to know it was about that incident.

One day, last summer, I was walking out from my front door through the stairwell as he was entering the building. As I went out the front door of the building, my upstairs neighbor stopped on the stairs, turned around and said to me "Hot enough for you?"

I turned back around to look at him and I was part of the way out the front door and I half-heartedly laughed in response and then went on my way to the grocery store. When I got back I made a blog post later that I think it title "93 & 91." That was the temperature reading on the small billboard I walked past on the way to and from the grocery store I walked to that day. And then later, as I noted in detail, I decided to watch for the first time the Phoebe Cates film "Bodies, Rest & Motion." As I noted in detail, I had received that DVD a very long time ago but had never watched it before and only that day, just a few hours after "Hot enough for you" I decided the watch that DVD.

That was part of the dialog on that DVD. I didn't publish that detail. You wouldn't know what I was referring to unless you watch the DVD.

So now that blue Chevrolet pickup shows up and I don't know the name of that guy in the apartment above me but I remember he lived here when I moved in. I remember seeing him in the stairwell the day all of our apartment flooded in December 2009 and I think back about how I got that email from Jodi Burgess just the day before that flood happened. Today he called out to me as I walked past and he was talking to me about the truck and I was asked him if it was a '63 and he told me it's 1966. I wanted to talk about it because I didn't know there was that much difference in appearance from the 1966 and 1967 but I avoided further conversations.

Some other things that happen around me defy reasonable explanation and I consider myself a rational person who can accept the possibility of coincidence. Things are the way they are in my life right now because I was willing long ago to not accept that certain observations I was making about the things people were doing around me was not coincidence and was deliberate behavior simply because I was there to watch them and that made no sense to me.

I believe that ghosts are literally loose here and they can communicate among each other. As rational people we would ignore such possibilities, especially considering there's nothing anyone can do about it if that is true.

My guess is they are attracted to me because of their motivations.

You see, if a ghost, or maybe ghoul is a better term, needs to survive by consuming some essence of human beings then they would have an affinity to human beings that have been involved in violence before against other human beings. The more violence a human being has been involved in against other human beings then the greater the affinity for the ghouls towards that individual human being. The reasoning suggests to me, perhaps because they are speaking to my somehow, there is a hypocrisy if I do not understand their position. They kill humans to survive and so what is the real difference between them and anyone in the United States military? I have started thinking about that notion in terms of that book "Rainbow Six." What if those ghouls can pull the strings of human beings and those human beings are how the ghouls harvest their crop, so to speak. "Rainbow Six" just to demonstrate how those ghouls will eventually run out of a source of food on this planet. If their numbers were small then that might be such a problem so there must be a tremendous number of them.

1993 film "Bodies, Rest & Motion" DVD video:

00:14:11

Nick: Hey, Chip.

Chip: Supposed to hit 110.

Nick: Well, it's good practice for Hell.

Chip: [ laughs ] I'll remember that one. Hey, um, I heard that you're leaving us.

Nick: Yep. Outta here.

Chip: They can you?

The Virus: Episode 2

by kaedejun March 11, 2013

Myung-hyun gets up and limps after In-chul, but Ji-won stops him – he can’t possibly go after anyone in this condition! Besides, it’s not even confirmed that In-chul has antibodies that they need. If In-chul is just a virus carrier, then Myung-hyun could easily have been infected just now. Myung-hyun doesn’t care if he dies as long as he can catch him.

Ji-won won’t let him get in her car to chase after In-chul. He needs to go to the hospital now. She doesn’t care if In-chul could possibly infect many more people who die, as long as Myung-hyun takes care of his own life first. Then hopefully when others are in a dangerous situation too, Myung-hyun is well enough to save them.

She drives off, and next thing we know, Soo-gil catches up to him. Soo-gil offers to take him to the hospital, and Myung-hyun angrily spits out blood. He realizes he has an open wound on his lip and thinks back to his fight with In-chul.

Myung-hyun tells Soo-gil to take a taxi separately to the hospital, and he’ll take the car alone. Soo-gil stares – could it possibly be that Myung-hyun was in close contact… and is now infected?
