Red Storm Rising

22– Ripostes

"Contact! We have a Big Bulge radar bearing zero-zero-nine. Signal strength is low."

"Miss us, you bastard," the tactical action officer breathed.

"Not much chance of that," Morris said. "Get the data to the escort commander."

"Red Storm Rising"

The Bear was on a southerly heading, using its radar only two minutes out of every ten as it approached the convoy. Soon another was detected slightly to the west. Plotting teams estimated their positions, and a report was sent via satellite to CINCLANTFLT in Norfolk with an urgent request for assistance. Norfolk receipted their message; ten minutes later they learned that no help was available.

Pharris manned her gun mount. The point-defense missile system and Gatling gun radar aft were switched to standby. Other radar was kept off. The radar operators in the combat information center sat nervously at their posts, fingering their switches while listening to the ESM reports and stealing an occasional look at the plot.

"Both of them probably have us now."

Morris nodded. "Next come the Backfires."

The captain thought of the battles he had studied at the naval academy-early in World War II, when the Japanese fleet had had air superiority, or when the Germans had used long-range Condors to circle convoys, radioing their positions to any interested party, and not a thing the Allies back then could do about. He'd never expected to be in the same fix. The same tactical situation repeating itself after forty years? It was absurd, Morris told himself. Absurd and terrifying.

"We have a visual sight on a Bear, just over the horizon at two-eight-zero," the talker said.

"Director, use your optics to track the target aft," the tactical action officer said at once. He looked over to Morris. "Maybe he'll fly close enough for a shot."

"Don't light off any radars just yet. He might just wander into somebody's missile envelope if he's not careful."

"No way he'll be that dumb."

"He will try to evaluate the convoy defenses," Morris said quietly. "He can't have them visually yet, not quite yet. Then for a while all he'll be able to see is bumps with wakes behind them. Not easy to identify a ship from an airplane, mister. Let's see just how curious this guy is . . ."

"Aircraft just changed course," the talker reported. "Turning east towards us."

"Air action starboard! Right standard rudder. All ahead full! Come to new course one-eight-zero," Morris ordered immediately. He turned south to lure the Bear closer to the SAM ships. "Illuminate the target. Weapons free! Engage when he gets within range."

Pharris heeled hard to the left as she changed course. Forward, the five-inch gun mount rotated clockwise as the ship brought her stem across the target bearing. As soon as the gun mount was unmasked, firecontrol radars gave it a target solution, and the long-barrel gun elevated to thirty degrees and locked on the target. The point-defense missile mount on the fantail did the same.

"Target is at thirty thousand feet, range fifteen miles and closing."

The escort commander still had not authorized a missile launch. Better to have Ivan shoot his missiles first, before he knew what lay in his path. Data from the carrier battle was already out to the fleet. The big Russian air-to-surface missiles were not especially hard targets to hit, since they ran straight for their targets, though you did have to react in a hurry: they were mighty fast. He figured that the Bear was still doing a target evaluation and did not yet know the strength of the escort force. The longer he was kept in the dark, the better, because the Backfires would not have much time to loiter this far from their bases. And if the Bear came in just a little closer . . .

"Commence firing!" the TAO shouted.

Pharris's gun mount went to full-automatic mode, firing a round every two seconds. The Bear was barely within range of her gun, and there was scant chance of a kill, but it was time to give him something to worry about.

The first five rounds fell short, exploding harmlessly a mile from the Bear, but the next three came closer, one exploding only two hundred yards from his left wing. The Soviet pilot instinctively turned right to evade. That was a mistake. He didn't know that the nearest row of "merchantmen" carried missiles.

Seconds later, two missiles launched and the Bear immediately dove to evade, a shower of chaff in her wake as she headed right for Pharris, which gave the frigate's gun crew another chance to score a kill. They fired off twenty new rounds as the plane approached. Perhaps two were close enough to damage the bomber, but there was no visible result. The missiles came in next, tiny white darts trailing columns of gray smoke. One missed and detonated in the chaff cloud, but the second detonated a hundred yards away from the bomber. The warhead expanded explosively like a watchspring, breaking into thousands of fragments, and several ripped into the Bear's port wing. The massive propJet lost power in one engine and suffered major wing damage before the pilot regained control just outside Pharris's gun range. She headed off north, trailing smoke.

The other Bear remained discreetly out of everyone's range. The raid commander had just learned a lesson that he'd pass on to his regimental intelligence officer.

"Red Storm Rising"

"More radars coming on. Down Beats!" warned the ESM technician. "I count ten-count is increasing. Fourteen-eighteen!" the air-search radar operator sang out next.

"Radar contacts, bearing zero-three-four, range one-eight-zero miles. I count four targets, now five-six targets. Course two-one-zero, speed six hundred knots."

"Here come the Backfires," TAO said.

"Radar contact!" came the next call. "Vampire! Vampire! We have inbound missiles."

Morris cringed inwardly. The escorts all switched on their radar transmitters. Missiles trained out on the incoming targets. But Pharris was not part of that game. Morris ordered his ship to flank speed, turning north to race away from the missiles' probable target area.

"The Backfires are turning back. The Bear is holding position. We have some radio chatter. Now twenty-three inbound missiles. Bearing changing on all contacts," TAO said. "They're all headed for the convoy. Looks like we're in the clear."

Morris could hear the crew in the Combat Information Center take one deep collective breath. He watched the radar display with marginal relief. The missiles were streaking in from the northeast, and the SAMs were coming up to meet them. The convoy was again ordered to scatter, the merchantmen racing away from the center of the target. What followed had an eerie resemblance to an arcade game. Of the twenty-three Soviet-launched missiles, nine broke through the SAMs and dove into the convoy. They hit seven merchantmen.

All seven were lost. Some disintegrated at once under the hammering impact of the thousand-kilogram warheads. The others lingered long enough for their crews to escape with their lives. The convoy had left the Delaware with thirty ships. Only twenty were left, and there was almost fifteen hundred miles of open ocean between them and Europe.

USS PHARRIS

One last merchant was burning. Her crew had abandoned ship two hours before, but still she burned on the western horizon. More deaths, Morris thought. Only about half of the crews had been saved, and there wasn't time for a more careful search. The convoy had sailed without a designated rescue ship. The helicopters had pulled many out of the water, but most of them were still needed to hunt submarines. He held a dispatch saying that Orions out of Lajes had prosecuted and probably killed an Echo-class missile submarine in their path. Some good news, but intelligence reported indications of two more.

"Red Storm Rising"

The loss of Iceland was a disaster whose dimensions were only now becoming apparent. The Soviet bombers had a clear lane to reach into the trade route. Their submarines were racing through the Denmark Strait even as the NATO navies were trying to position their submarines to reform the barrier they had lost-the barrier upon which the convoys depended. The Air Force and Navy would soon try to rearrange fighter coverage to harass the Backfires, but those measures were an stopgaps. Until Iceland was fully neutralized, or better yet retaken, the Third Battle of the North Atlantic hung in an uneven balance.

At the Pacific fleet bases of San Diego and Pearl Harbor, darkened ships stood out to sea. Once in open ocean they all headed south toward Panama.

Red Storm Rising

USS PHARRIS

Morris didn't wave at the low-flying aircraft, but wanted to. The French Navy's patrol plane signaled that they were within range of land-based air cover. It would take a very brave Russian sub skipper to want to play games here, with a screen of French diesel subs a few miles north of the convoy lane and several ASW patrol aircraft forming a tricolored umbrella over the convoy.

The French had also sent out a helicopter to collect the Russian submariners. They were being flown to Brest for a full interrogation by NATO intelligence types. Morris didn't envy them the trip. They'd be held by the French, and he had no doubt that the French Navy was in an evil mood after the loss of one of its carriers. The tapes his crew had made of their conversations were also being sent. The Russians had talked among themselves, aided by the chiefs' liquor, and perhaps their whispered conversations had some value.

They were about to turn the convoy over to a mixed British-French escort force and take over a group of forty merchantmen bound for America. Morris stood on the bridge wing, turning every five minutes or so to look at the two half and one full silhouettes that the bosun had painted on both sides of the pilothouse-"No sense having some jerk on the wrong side of the ship missing them," the bosun had pointed out seriously. Their ASW tactics had worked fairly well. With Pharris as outlying sonar picket, and heavy support from the Orions, they had intercepted all but one of the inbound Russian subs. There had been a lot of skepticism on this point, but the tactic had worked, by God. But it had to work better still.

Morris knew that things would be getting harder. For the first trip the Soviets had been able to put no more than a fraction of their submarines into action against them. Those submarines were now forcing their way down the Denmark Strait. The NATO sub force trying to block the passage no longer had the SOSUS line to give them intercept vectors, nor Orions to pounce on the contacts that submarines could not reach. They would score kills, but would they score enough? How much larger would the threat be this week? Morris could see from their return route to the States that they were adding nearly five hundred miles to the passage by looping far to the south-partially because of the Backfires, but more now to dilute the submarine threat. Two threats to worry about. His ship was equipped to deal with only one.

They'd lost a third of the convoy, mainly to aircraft. Could they sustain that? He wondered how the merchant crews were holding up.

"Red Storm Rising"

They had closed in on the convoy, and he could see the northernmost line of merchies. On the horizon a big container ship was blinking a light at them. Morris raised his glasses to read the signal.

THANKS FOR NOTHING NAVY.

I remember saying something about how I was going to kick anybody's ass that did that when I was around.

Bush ignores flak, names general to head CIA

By Terence Hunt

The Associated Press

WASHINGTON – President Bush today chose Air Force Gen. Michael Hayden to lead the embattled CIA

http://articles.latimes.com/2006/may/09/nation/na-hayden9

Los Angeles Times

Despite Opposition, Bush Backs Hayden as CIA Chief

The Air Force general is praised for insight, but as NSA chief he was tied to intelligence troubles.

May 09, 2006 Greg Miller Times Staff Writer

WASHINGTON — Ignoring opposition from Congress, President Bush nominated Gen. Michael V. Hayden on Monday to be the next CIA director, setting the stage for a confirmation struggle that is certain to focus on Hayden's military background and his role in a controversial domestic eavesdropping operation.

The Bush administration also moved swiftly to reassure beleaguered CIA employees by pledging that the agency would not be dismantled under Hayden, and offering the No. 2 position to a respected former spy who had resigned over clashes with outgoing director Porter J. Goss.

In pushing ahead with the Hayden nomination, the White House is staking the CIA's future on a strait-laced Air Force officer who is often praised for his keen understanding of complex intelligence issues as well as his plain-spoken style.

But Hayden, who for six years was director of the National Security Agency, is also associated with almost every intelligence issue that has become a problem for the administration -- including the failure to prevent the Sept. 11 attacks, misjudgments about weapons programs in Iraq, and eavesdropping on U.S. residents without court warrants.

Nonetheless, the White House apparently is willing to revive the eavesdropping debate to highlight national security issues, which have been a political plus for the administration.

Some lawmakers also have expressed concern about putting a military officer in charge of a civilian agency at a time when the Defense Department is seen as expanding its involvement in spying operations and increasingly encroaching on the CIA's turf, prompting fears that the agency will be "gobbled up" by the Pentagon.

Bush sought to brush back congressional critics, citing Hayden's extensive experience in a series of national security assignments, and declaring him "the right man to lead the CIA at this critical moment in our nation's history."

But even after Monday's major public relations push by the White House, opposition on Capitol Hill continued to mount, including unusually harsh responses from ordinarily loyal Republican leaders.

House Speaker J. Dennis Hastert (R-Ill.) declared his opposition to Hayden's appointment, siding with House Intelligence Committee Chairman Peter Hoekstra, a Republican from Michigan.

Hastert "believes a military figure should not be the head of a civilian agency," said Ron Bonjean, Hastert's spokesman. Bonjean also said that Hastert had been "informed but not consulted" about Hayden's selection.

Some of Hayden's supporters see a difficult struggle ahead, conceding that the political stars are not aligning the way the White House and its nominee might have hoped.

"He's going to have to jump through a lot of hoops, and he may not make it," said Rep. Ray LaHood (R-Ill.), a senior member of the House Intelligence Committee who supports Hayden's nomination.

The response was more muted on the Senate side of the Capitol, where Hayden's confirmation vote will take place.

But there too, key Republicans stopped well short of expressing enthusiasm for a candidate who was confirmed unanimously a year ago for the No. 2 job in the U.S. intelligence community.

Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan.), the chairman of the Senate Intelligence Committee, said: "While I am not opposed to his nomination, senators, including myself, will have important questions which they will want addressed prior to any confirmation vote."

Roberts said that he expected Hayden to be confirmed nevertheless, and that he planned to schedule Intelligence Committee hearings on the nomination before the end of the month.

Among Senate Democrats, misgivings centered mainly on Hayden's role in running the domestic surveillance program, which was authorized by Bush in the aftermath of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks and exposed publicly in news reports last year.

Under the ongoing program, the NSA has monitored communications of U.S. residents without court warrants, bypassing requirements of a 1978 law designed to protect Americans against such surveillance.

The White House has defended the operation by saying that it was necessary to prevent follow-up attacks on U.S. soil, and was limited to international calls between U.S. residents and individuals overseas suspected of ties to Al Qaeda.

Members of both parties have questioned the program's legality, and called for new measures that would subject such domestic spying to judicial and congressional scrutiny. Hayden was responsible for running the program, and has also played a leading role in defending it publicly.

"It is not a driftnet over Dearborn or Lackawanna or Freemont," Hayden said in a January speech. "This is hot pursuit of communications entering or leaving America involving someone we believe is associated with Al Qaeda."

Hayden's role defending the operation has troubled some lawmakers.

THE NATION

Despite Opposition, Bush Backs Hayden as CIA Chief

The Air Force general is praised for insight, but as NSA chief he was tied to intelligence troubles.

May 09, 2006 Greg Miller Times Staff Writer

Sen. John D. Rockefeller IV of West Virginia, the ranking Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, complained in a recent letter to Director of National Intelligence John D. Negroponte that he was dismayed that Hayden had become "a key participant in this White House public relations strategy intended to deflect criticism of the NSA program."

A senior Democratic aide on the Senate Intelligence Committee said the issue raised questions about Hayden's independence from the White House.

"He became an extension of the White House press office," said the aide, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he is not authorized to talk to the press.

Hayden, 61, has spent the bulk of his career in intelligence work. The Pittsburgh native served as an analyst at the Strategic Air Command in the early 1970s and was a defense attache in the U.S. Embassy in Bulgaria during the Cold War. He went on to hold a series of high-level positions in the military and in the National Security Council at the White House.

His six years at the helm of the NSA make him the longest-serving director of that agency. But critics point to a series of blunders on Hayden's watch.

During his tenure, the NSA invested billions of dollars in computer systems that failed to deliver expected results. The agency also intercepted Al Qaeda warnings -- including a Sept. 10, 2001, boast that "Tomorrow is zero hour" -- but failed to translate them until it was too late.

Even so, Hayden's stock in the administration has continued to rise. After Congress passed a sweeping intelligence reform bill in late 2004, Hayden was picked to serve as the top deputy to Negroponte.

At a White House briefing on Monday, Negroponte made it clear that he sees Hayden as a solution to problems left behind by Goss, who resigned under pressure last week.

Negroponte said Hayden would "improve the morale" at the agency, and described him as "a reformer who understands the imperative that we create a truly integrated intelligence community."

But in the sharpest rebuke to Goss, Negroponte also announced plans to nominate Stephen Kappes to serve as deputy CIA director under Hayden.

Kappes, 54, was among the first in a series of high-level agency officers who resigned early in Goss' tenure over leadership disagreements and complaints of mistreatment of agency veterans by members of Goss' senior staff.

Kappes, Negroponte said, "was one of their leading case officers and a leading member of their clandestine service." A Russian and Farsi speaker who had spent more than a decade overseas, Kappes rose through the ranks to become the deputy director of operations before he left.

Kappes did not respond to a telephone message and e-mail seeking comment.

Former CIA officials said that Kappes would complement Hayden, who has little experience with human spying operations. Bringing Kappes back, they said, probably would improve morale in the clandestine service and send a reassuring signal to agency employees.

"Putting Kappes in there is certainly a way to reach out to the troops," said Tyler Drumheller, former head of the European division of the CIA's clandestine service.

"Kappes is not going to sit around and watch the agency be whittled down to nothing," Drumheller said, adding that hiring Kappes would be seen as a "repudiation of everything Porter [Goss] wanted to do."

One of Goss' senior aides, CIA Executive Director Kyle Dustin "Dusty" Foggo, has already agreed to resign, saying in an e-mail to agency employees that he had "decided to step aside," according to a U.S. intelligence official.

Foggo is under investigation by the CIA inspector general's office for a contract the agency awarded to a San Diego businessman and lifelong friend of Foggo linked to the bribery scandal involving former Rep. Randy "Duke" Cunningham (R-Rancho Santa Fe). The FBI also is examining the contract, the Associated Press reported Monday.

THE WHITE HOUSE

PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH

For Immediate Release

Office of the Press Secretary

May 8, 2006

President Nominates General Michael Hayden as Director of the Central Intelligence Agency

The Oval Office

9:31 A.M. EDT

THE PRESIDENT: Good morning. Today I'm pleased to nominate General Mike Hayden as the next Director of the Central Intelligence Agency. Mike Hayden is supremely qualified for this position. I've come to know him well as our nation's first Deputy Director of National Intelligence. In that position, he's worked closely with our Director of National Intelligence, John Negroponte, to reform America's intelligence capabilities to meet the threats of a new century.

Mike has more than 20 years of experience in the intelligence field. He served for six years as Director of the National Security Agency, and thus brings vast experience leading a major intelligence agency to his new assignment. He also served as Commander of the Air Intelligence Agency, as Director of the Joint Command and Control Warfare Center, and as Deputy Chief of Staff of the United States and U.N. Forces in Korea.

He's held senior positions at the Pentagon, the U.S. European Command, the National Security Council, and served behind the Iron Curtain in our embassy in Bulgaria during the Cold War.

Mike knows our intelligence community from the ground up. He has been both a provider and a consumer of intelligence. He's overseen the development of both human and technological intelligence. He has demonstrated an ability to adapt our intelligence services to the new challenges of the war on terror. He's the right man to lead the CIA at this critical moment in our nation's history.

It's my honor to welcome Mike's wife, Jeanine, and their family to the Oval Office. I want to thank them for their willingness to support Mike Hayden in his long service to the United States.

With the agreement of the Senate, Mike will succeed a great patriot in Director Porter Goss. Under Porter's leadership, the CIA launched a five-year plan to strengthen the agency's human intelligence capabilities. This plan involves increasing the number of operatives and sources in the field, and building up the agency's analytical capabilities, so the hardworking men and women of the CIA have the resources they need to penetrate closed societies and secretive organizations.

Porter also played a vital role in shaping the new relationship between the CIA and the new Director of National Intelligence. And this process benefited greatly from the decades-long friendship between him and Director Negroponte.

Porter took on a critical job at a critical moment in our nation's history. He instilled a sense of professionalism in the CIA and maintained the high standards of this vital agency at a time of transition and transformation. Throughout his public life, Porter Goss has been a man of accomplishment and integrity, and America appreciates his service.

I'm confident that Mike Hayden will continue the reforms that Porter has put in place and provide outstanding leadership to meet the challenges and threats of a dangerous new century. Mike Hayden was unanimously confirmed by the Senate last year for his current post, and I call on the Senate to confirm him promptly as the Director of the Central Intelligence Agency.

The work of the CIA has never been more important to the security of the American people. America faces determined enemies who struck our nation on September the 11th, 2001, and who intend to attack our country again. To stop them we must have the best possible intelligence. The men and women of the CIA are working around the clock and around the world, in dangerous conditions to gain information that is vital to securing our nation. I appreciate their dedicated service. And so does Mike Hayden.

In Mike Hayden, the men and women of the CIA will have a strong leader who will support them. He will ensure they have the resources they need to do their jobs. He will enforce the secrecy and accountability that are critical to the security of the American people.

Mike, I appreciate your many years of service to our country. We're grateful that you've agreed to step forward and serve once again. Thank you very much.

GENERAL HAYDEN: Mr. President, thank you for those kind words and for the confidence that you and Ambassador Negroponte have shown to me in nominating me for this position. There's probably no post more important in preserving our security and our values as a people than the head of the Central Intelligence Agency.

When I returned from Korea in 1999 to take the position at NSA, I was befriended most of all by two people -- George Tenet, who was then DCI, and Porter Goss, then Chairman of the House Intelligence Committee. Both of these men befriended me and mentored me and supported me. And I will always be in their debt, especially now that I find that I've been nominated to be their successor. If I'm confirmed, I know that I will be standing on their shoulders.

In the confirmation process, I look forward to meeting with members of the Congress, better understanding their concerns and working with them to move the American intelligence community forward. This is simply too important not to get absolutely right.

To the men and women of the Central Intelligence Agency, if I'm confirmed, I would be honored to join you and work with so many good friends. Your achievements are frequently under-appreciated and hidden from the public eye, but you know what you do to protect the republic.

And finally, to my wife, Jeanine, and the other members of my family, thank you yet again for agreeing to continue your sacrifices. I can never repay you enough.

Thank you.

THE PRESIDENT: Congratulations, Mike. Thank you very much. Appreciate it.

Thank you all.

And my complaints are going to resonate with a lot of people in the company if Microsoft acknowledges that Kirk Tavener's actions were the worst form of sexual harassment possible and was essentially a form of extortion. I suspect management is doing that a lot at Microsoft and what Kirk Tavener did to me is just the tip of the iceburg.

Yesterday, I started thinking that maybe no one is going to just give me the explanation I have been waiting on. Instead, what I think is going to happen is someone is going to hand me a set of keys and say "Here you go. One shiny, pre-owned Microsoft. Have fun." Murray seeks $1 billion for VA

By Hal Bernton

Seattle Times staff reporter

U.S. Sen. Patty Murray yesterday sent a letter to the White House asking President Bush to shore up a $1 billion shortfall in Department of Veterans Affairs health-care funding.

Murray, D-Wash., said the deficit could be addressed in an emergency-spending bill in the Senate in the days before the Fourth of July recess.

The shortfall for the current fiscal year, which ends Sept. 30, was disclosed by VA officials last week, prompting Murray to accuse the Bush administration of either "deliberate misdirection or gross incompetence."

Mary Baker Biography

(1791–1864)

Mary Baker was best known as the imposter who posed as Princess Caraboo, a foreign princess from an exotic land.

Quick Facts

Name Mary Baker Birth Date 1791 Death Date December 24, 1864 Place of Birth Witheridge, Devon, United Kingdom Place of Death Bristol, United Kingdom

Synopsis

Mary Baker was a cobbler's daughter who, in 1817, appeared in a British village speaking a strange language. She claimed to be Princess Caraboo, from the island of Javasu in the Indian Ocean, and drew visitors and admirers from far and wide before she was exposed.

An Exotic Stranger

Mary Baker was born Mary Willcocks in Witheridge in Devon, England in 1791. Little is known about her early life.

In April 1871, Baker arrived at the home in Almondsbury in Gloucestershire, England. Speaking an exotic language and dressed in a black turban and unusual clothes, Baker appeared to come from a foreign land. The cobbler and his wife took her to the county officials.

The local overseer for the poor, unsure of what to do with the woman, took her to the county magistrate, Sam Worrall, and his wife Elizabeth. The Worralls were suspicious of Baker, and took her to stay at the local inn for the night. At the inn, Baker pointed to a pineapple, and excitedly indicted that it was a fruit from her homeland called "Anana"— which means pineapple in several different languages. She also chanted a strange prayer, and slept on the floor.

Conning the Locals

Back at the Worralls', the mystery of their strange guest's identity was becoming clear. Portugese sailor claimed to understand Baker's story and translated what she was saying. Her name was Princess Caraboo, he said, and she hailed from he island of Javaus in the Indian Ocean. He said she had been kidnapped by pirates, and escaped by jumping overboard and swimming ashore.

Impressed by their guest's royal background, the Worralls announced her presence in newspapers. The news spread fast, and for weeks admirers visited the Worralls' home. Baker put on a show, praying to her god 'Alla Tallah,' climbing trees, and swimming naked.

Discovery

Alas, Princess Caraboo's charade didn't last forever. A woman named Mrs. Neale recognized a description of Caraboo in a newspaper, and realized that Caraboo was her former servant. Working in Mrs. Neale's home, Baker has made up nonsense languages to entertain the children. Finally, Baker admitted that Princess Caraboo was an act.

The Worralls shipped Baker off to Philadelphia, where she attempted the Princess Caraboo act yet again. Legend has it that on the way she even stopped off at the Island of Helena, to visit Napoleon in exile. After seven years, she returned to England. In 1828, going by the name Mary Burgess

Quotes

Eddie Jessup: Memory is energy! It doesn't disappear - it's still in there. There's a physiological pathway to our earlier consciousnesses. There has to be; and I'm telling you it's in the goddamned limbic system.

Mason Parrish: You're a whacko!

Eddie Jessup: What's whacko about it, Mason? I'm a man in search of his true self. How archetypically American can you get? We're all trying to fulfill ourselves, understand ourselves, get in touch with ourselves, face the reality of ourselves, explore ourselves, expand ourselves. Ever since we dispensed with God we've got nothing but ourselves to explain this meaningless horror of life.

CHAPTER 24

CUSTOMS

Brightling wondered how long his people would choose to live here. Some would scatter quickly, probably drive all over America, setting up their own enclaves, reporting back by satellite at first. Others would go to Africa-that seemed likely to be the most popular destination. Still others to Brazil and the rain forest study area. Perhaps some of the primitive tribes down there would be spared the Shiva exposure, and his people would study them as well and how Primitive Man lived in a pristine physical environment, living in full harmony with Nature. They'd study them as they were, a unique species worthy of protection and too backward to be a danger to the environment. Might some African tribes survive as well? His people didn't think so. The African countries allowed their primitives to interface too readily with city folk, and the cities would be the focal centers of death for every nation on earth-especially when Vaccine-A was distributed. Thousands of liters of it would be produced, flown all over the world, and then distributed, ostensibly to preserve life, but really to take it… slowly, of course.

Progress was going well. Back at his corporate headquarters the fictional documentation for -A was already fully formulated. It had been supposedly tested on over a thousand monkeys who were then exposed to Shiva, and only two of them had become symptomatic, and only one of those had died over the nineteen month trial that existed only on paper and computer memories. They hadn't yet approached the FDA for human trials, because that wasn't necessary-but when Shiva started appearing all over the world, Horizon Corporation would announce that it had been working quietly on hemorrhagic fever vaccines ever since the Iranian attack on America, and faced with a global emergency and a fully documented treatment modality, the FDA would have no choice but to approve human use, and so officially bless the Project's goal of global human extermination. Not so much the elimination, John Brightling thought more precisely, as the culling back of the most dangerous species on the planet, which would allow Nature to restore Herself, with just enough human stewards to watch and study and appreciate the process. In a thousand or so years, there might be a million or so humans, but that was a small number in the great scheme of things, and the people would be properly educated to understand and respect nature instead of destroying her. The goal of the Project wasn't to end the world. It was to build a new one, a new world in the shape that Nature Herself intended. On that he would put his own name for all eternity. John Brightling, the man who saved the planet.

Brightling looked at the key in his hand, then got back into his car. The driver took him to the main entrance, and there he used the key, surprised and miffed to see that the door was unlocked. Well, there were still people going in and out. He took the elevator to his office-apartment atop the main building. That door, he saw, was locked as it was supposed to be, and he opened it with a kind of one-person ceremony, and walked into the seat of Olympus's chief

CHAPTER 38

NATURE RESORT

"Carol," Bill replied, "you take care of your own ass first. You can't save Nature from inside Marion Federal Penitentiary, but if we play it smart, we can deny evidence to anyone who investigates us, and without that we're safe, guys. Now"-he pulled the list from his pocket-"these are the only people we have to protect. There's fifty-three of them, and you have four Gulfstreams sitting out there. We can fly us all down to Project Alternate. Any disagreement on that?"

John Brightling shook his head. "No, I'm with you. Can this keep us in the clear legally?"

Henriksen nodded emphatically. "I think so. Popov will be a problem, but he's a murderer. I'm going to report the Hunnicutt killing to the local cops before we fly off. That will compromise his value as a witness-make it look like he's just telling a tale to save his own ass from the gallows, whatever they use to execute murderers here in Kansas. I'll have Maclean and Killgore tape statements we can hand over to the local police. It may not be enough to convict him, but it will make him pretty uncomfortable. That's how you do this, break up the other guy's chain of evidence and the credibility of his witnesses. In a year, maybe eighteen months, we have our lawyers sit down and chat with the local U.S. attorney, and then we come home. Until then we camp out in Brazil, and you can run the company from there via the Internet, can't you?"

"Well, it's not as good as what we planned, but…"

"Yes," Carol agreed. "But it beats the hell out of life in a federal prison."

"Get everything moving, Bill," John ordered.

"So, what do we do with this?" Clark asked, on waking up.

"Well," Tom Sullivan answered, "first we go to the Assistant Director in Charge of the New York office, and then we talk to a United States attorney about building a criminal case."

"I don't think so," Clark responded, rubbing his eyes and reaching for the coffee.

"We can't just put the arm on them and whack'em, you know. We're cops. We can't break the law," Chatham pointed out.

"This can never see the light of day in a court. Besides, who's to say that you'll win the case? How hard will this be to cover up?"

"I can't evaluate that. We have two missing girls they probably murdered-more, if our friend Popov is right-and that's a crime, both federal and state, and, Jesus, this other conspiracy… that's why we have laws, Mr. Clark."

"Maybe so, but how fast do you see yourself driving out to this place in Kansas, whose location we don't know yet, with warrants to arrest one of the richest men in America?"

CHAPTER 14

SWORD OF THE LEGION

The castle, real as it appeared, wasn't real. It had been built with the modern conveniences of elevators and fire stairwells. The former were probably compromised, Dennis thought, but one of the latter descended straight down to the underground. He walked to that fire door and opened it, waving for his employees to head that way. This they did, most with enthusiasm for escaping this suddenly dangerous place. The last tossed him keys on the way through, and when Dennis left, he locked this door behind him, then raced down the four levels of square spiral stairs. Another minute and he was in the underground, which was crowded with employees and guests hustled out of harm's way by Trolls, Legionnaires, and other uniformed park personnel. A gaggle of park-security people were there, but none of them were armed with anything more dangerous than a radio. There were guns in the counting room, but they were under lock, and only a few of the Worldpark employees were trained and authorized to use them, and Dennis didn't want shots to be fired here. Besides, he had other things to do. The alternate Worldpark command post was actually outside the park grounds, just at the end of the underground. He ran there, following his other command personnel north toward the exit that led to the employees' parking lot. That required about five minutes, and Dennis darted in the door to see that the alternate command post was double-manned now. His own alternate desk was vacant, and the phone already linked to the Guardia Civil.

"Are you safe?" the captain asked.

"For now, I guess," Dennis responded. He keyed up his castle office on his monitor.

"This way," Andre told them. The door was locked, however. He backed off and fired his pistol at the doorknob, which bent from the impact, but remained locked, movies to the contrary. Then Rene tried his Uzi, which wrecked that portion of the door and allowed him to pull it open. Andre led them upstairs, then kicked in the door to the command center-empty. He swore foully at that discovery.

"I see them!" Dennis said into the phone. "One man two-six men with guns-Jesus, they have kids with them!"

NELL: Man…

ERIC: What'd you find?

NELL: Nothing. Sabatino appears to be clean.

ERIC: That's good, right?

NELL: I still think I should tell someone.

ERIC: Well, you did; you told me. And no one knows you told me, so if something happens to you and Kensi, I know.

NELL: Wait, what's gonna happen to me and Kensi?

ERIC: I don't know. But just in case, I should probably create a file with a dead man's switch. That way, if something happens to you and something happens to Kensi and something happens to me, it will automatically go out to the rest of the team.

NELL: Wait, what are you talking about?

ERIC: Okay, if someone goes undercover and it's so secret and dangerous that only their boss knows, but then their boss gets killed or their boss is actually one of the bad guys, and now you're in double danger because no one knows the truth. That wouldn't happen with my plan.

NELL: Cool. Now you've officially freaked me out, and I'm going to tell Hetty.

[She walks out)

ERIC: I'm still gonna create a dead man's switch.

Hawkins: So based on this report, I'd say you were a former J&R employee, right? Looking to make sure the company's sins are exposed.

John Smith: Something like that.

Hawkins: So why not just blow the whistle? What do you need me for?

John Smith: I don't need you. I need your bomb. It's concrete evidence that cannot be refuted as easily as words on a page.

Sculpture dedication set

The Amarillo Globe-News

Comments from a variety of special guests, special music and a flyover by the Air Force's B-1B Lancer aircraft will combine to highlight the dedication of the Rick Husband Memorial Sculpture scheduled Saturday in downtown Amarillo.

Ceremonies will begin at 2 p.m. in the Centennial Plaza area between City Hall and the Civic Center's Grand Plaza Room, according to a news release from Center City which commissioned the bronze statue and is coordinating the project.

Lundeen also produced a sculpture of Husband which was dedicated at Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport Jan. 19.

Making new memories

By KAREN D. SMITH

Bittersweet reminders at Rick Husband Amarillo International Airport were made sweeter Monday for the astronaut's children with the dedication of the renamed airport and a bronze statue of him, said his wife, Evelyn Husband.

"This will be a new memory for them," she said, referring to Laura, 13, and Matthew, 8. "What I've tried to do this whole year is have new memories for them so they know that all of our fun and memories didn't stop on Feb. 1."

Matthew had experienced particular difficulty viewing photographs of Husband displayed at the airport since the Feb. 1 tragedy that killed his father and six space shuttle Columbia crewmates, Evelyn had said in a Jan. 9 telephone interview.

"There's this huge, gorgeous picture of Rick, and it's hard," she said then. "Laura and I will stand there and look at it. (Matthew) looks at anything but."

The dedication ceremony, therefore, was important for the children to attend, she said Monday.

"I believe from this day forward when we walk into this airport, Matthew will remember this day

LAFORGE: You know? I wish I had a picture of this.

COCHRANE: What?

LAFORGE: Oh well, you see, in the future this whole area becomes an historical monument. You're standing almost on the exact spot where your statue's gonna be.

COCHRANE: Statue?

LAFORGE: Yeah! It's marble, about twenty metres tall and you're looking up at the sky. Your hand sort of reaching to the future.

COCHRANE: I gotta to take a leak!

LAFORGE: Leak? I'm not detecting any leak.
