The Battle of Mogadishu (also referred to as the Battle of the Black Sea, and Black Hawk Down in popular culture) or for Somalis: the Day of the Rangers (Somali: Maalintii Rangers) was part of Operation Gothic Serpent and was fought on October 3 and 4, 1993, in Mogadishu, Somalia, between forces of the United States supported by UNOSOM II and Somali militia fighters loyal to president to be Mohamed Farrah Aidid who had support from armed civilian fighters.
The ground-extraction convoy was supposed to reach the captive targets a few minutes after the beginning of the operation. However, it ran into delays. Somali citizens and local militia formed barricades along the streets of Mogadishu with rocks and burning tires, blocking the convoy from reaching the Rangers and their captives. Aidid militiamen with megaphones shouting, "Kasoobaxa guryaha oo iska celsa cadowga!" ("Come out and defend your homes!").

Espionage
Espionage or spying involves an individual obtaining information that is considered secret or confidential without the permission of the holder of the information. Espionage is inherently clandestine, lest the legitimate holder of the information change plans or take other countermeasures once it is known that the information is in unauthorized hands.
Espionage is usually part of an institutional effort by a government or corporation, and the term is most readily associated with state spying on potential or actual enemies primarily for military purposes. Spying involving corporations is known as industrial espionage.
One of the most effective ways to compile information about an enemy (or potential enemy) is by infiltrating the enemy's ranks. This is the job of the spy. Spies can bring back all sorts of information concerning the size and strength of an enemy army. They can also find dissidents within the enemy's forces and influence them to defect. In times of crisis, spies can also be used to steal technology and to sabotage the enemy in various ways. Counterintelligence operatives can feed false information to enemy spies, protecting important domestic secrets and preventing attempts at subversion. Nearly every society has very strict laws concerning espionage, and the penalty for being caught is often death. However, the benefits that can be gained through espionage are generally felt to outweigh the risks.

A Pentagon intelligence analyst resigned one day after terrorists bombed the destroyer Cole in Yemen, protesting that his superiors had ignored his warnings of an imminent threat to American forces in the region, senators and defense officials said today.
The resignation of the analyst -- who monitored terrorist threats in the region for the Defense Intelligence Agency -- raised new questions on Capitol Hill about whether the Pentagon and intelligence agencies could have done more to avert the attack on the Cole, which killed 17 sailors and wounded 39 on Oct. 12.
The analyst, identified as Kie C. Fallis, had not warned of a specific threat against the Cole or of an attack in Yemen, defense officials said.
Rather, they said, he concluded from intelligence reports that there was a strong possibility of an attack and that military commanders had not done enough to protect American forces in the region.
Senior Pentagon officials testified today during House and Senate hearings that at times became contentious. And officials also disclosed that American intelligence agencies had issued two other warnings of a terrorist attack in the region -- one the day before the Cole was bombed, the second hours afterward.
The Central Intelligence Agency issued a general warning on Oct. 11 that an attack on ''U.S. interests and Jewish tourists'' in the region was likely, one senior government official said. The second warning, issued by the National Security Agency, was more specific, citing the possibility of an attack based on the movement of a suspected terrorist in Yemen, according to a senior defense official.

Rozhkov grunted. Group Nord was an ad hoc committee of KGB department chiefs, first assembled by then-chief of the KGB Yuri Andropov in the mid-1970s. Its purpose was to research political and psychological operations aimed at undermining Western will. Its specific plan to shake the NATO military and political structure in preparation for a shooting war was Nord's proudest example of legerdemain. But would it work? The two senior officers shared an ironic look. Like most professional soldiers, they distrusted spies and all their plans.
