He does now, but the answer to that question a few months ago would have been "no." When the world's richest man is paying the bill, it seems anything is possible.
"Tonight Show" host Leno says he started using a computer only a month and a half ago when he agreed to emcee today's launch of Windows 95.
Leno wouldn't say how much he was paid to share the stage with Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates, whose personal fortune is estimated at $14 billion, but he said he was attracted to the technology.
"If this were a car company, I probably wouldn't be here," he said today as he drove a white electric "mouse" car around a carnival on Microsoft's Redmond campus. "The difference is, it's high-tech and it's American high-tech. It puts Seattle on the map."
Over Redmond, hot-air balloons competed for airspace with TV stations' mobile transmission towers. Food vendors staffed stands stocked with everything from root-beer floats to strawberry shortcake.
"Microsoft is celebrating its 20th anniversary this year," Gates said before 2,500 people, including 500 journalists, gathered under a giant circus tent. "It's original vision for a computer on every desk and in every home is slowly coming true."
Leno, dressed in a denim shirt and a tie, joked his way through a Windows demonstration with Gates. Gates played the "Answer Wizard" as Leno posed questions.
"Windows 95 is so easy, even a talk-show host can figure it out," Gates said. Leno, who called himself a "computer virgin," said Windows 95 is so amazing "it's now able to keep track of O.J. Simpson's alibis all at once."

High Court Asked To Delay Clinton Harassment Suit
Lawyer: Wait Hurts Jones' Case

WASHINGTON — Contending that a sexual harassment lawsuit against President Clinton already has consumed "a lot" of the president's time, his lawyer urged the Supreme Court Monday to delay the case until Clinton leaves office.
In a case with potentially enormous political implications, Clinton lawyer Robert Bennett said a trial on Paula Corbin Jones' lawsuit would be too distracting and would interfere with the president's duties.
"I can tell you, the president has personally spent a lot of time on this case already," Bennett told the justices.
Clinton is fighting hard for the delay as he works to define how his presidency will be remembered. At the very least, it would enable him to avoid during his final four years in office a trial on lurid allegations.
But in the stately courtroom Monday, just a week before Clinton is to be inaugurated for a second term, the justices subjected Bennett to a barrage of questions and seemed unconvinced by many of his arguments.
However, Jones' lawyer, Gilbert Davis, fared no better. He was interrupted repeatedly, with Justice Sandra Day O'Connor saying she was "totally confused" by his argument and Chief Justice William Rehnquist chastising Davis for not answering their questions "as frankly as we hoped you would."
By the end of the hourlong argument, the justices seemed impatient with both sides and gave no indication how they would rule. Though they appeared concerned about the impact of a delay, they also expressed misgivings about giving a trial judge control over Clinton's schedule by forcing him into court.
The Supreme Court is not considering the merits of Jones' suit, in which she alleges that Clinton sexually harassed her in 1991 when he was governor of Arkansas. Indeed, some of the justices appeared to take pains to ensure they would not have to hear a recitation of Jones' allegations. Justice John Paul Stevens, for instance, interrupted her lawyer at one point by saying, "I'm not asking you to describe the case."
Clinton is hoping no court will hear those details until he leaves office. In seeking to delay the lawsuit, he claims it would take too much of his time and would violate constitutional principles that keep the executive and judicial branches of government separate.
"What is unprecedented here is the notion of taking the president of the United States of America, in whom the full executive power resides, and subjecting him to the power of any state court or local court in this country," said Bennett.
Davis argued that the president should stand trial because he has the "same rights and responsibilities as other citizens." If the case were delayed, he argued, Jones' reputation would continue to be sullied, witnesses could be lost, memories would fade.
"That's why we so often say, `Justice delayed is justice denied,' " Davis said. "Her case could be utterly destroyed."
Acting Solicitor General Walter Dellinger, who also argued for Clinton, said the president has acknowledged that delay "might have adverse consequences," but said that should not determine the outcome.
"The president's unimpaired performance of his duties must take precedence over a private citizen's desire for redress," Dellinger said.
But some of the justices quickly carved up arguments by Dellinger and Bennett that the lawsuit would be too demanding.
"I must say I don't find that terribly persuasive," Justice Antonin Scalia said. "We see presidents riding horseback, chopping firewood, fishing, playing golf, so forth and so on."
The justices also seemed disturbed by the alternative. They clearly were concerned about the president being at the mercy of a trial judge, particularly one who would not be sensitive to his schedule.
What if a trial judge ordered Clinton to court on a day he had a NATO meeting, Scalia asked Davis.
Davis suggested that the judge could evaluate whether Clinton's excuse was being made in good faith. He even acknowledged that it "may well be interference" with a president's duties simply for pre-trial discovery to go forward.
The justices also seemed concerned about the impact of a blanket rule that would allow presidents to delay civil litigation over their non-official acts. Suppose, O'Connor asked, the president was involved in a child custody dispute or owned a parcel of land that was "bubbling up poisons."
Dellinger said he assumed that exceptions could be made, but said that the president preferred an absolute rule that would delay any kind of civil litigation.
Bennett suggested that the court extend a previous ruling that presidents cannot be sued for official acts, even after they leave office.
But Rehnquist noted that the earlier case was based on concern that the president will not make unfettered decisions unless he is free from the fear that he will be sued for his official decisions.
"I don't see how that element is present here," Rehnquist said.
Several justices asked about the possibility of allowing some pretrial investigative work to proceed, such as interviewing witnesses, but delaying the trial until Clinton leaves office. That's what a federal judge in Arkansas ruled, although a federal appeals court reversed and said the entire case should proceed.
"How would that interfere with the workings of the presidency?" asked Justice Stephen Breyer.
"Litigation can be all consuming and all absorbing," Dellinger said. "Personal litigation an be totally absorbing."

Legal Questions Present Challenges

WASHINGTON — A historic argument before the U.S. Supreme Court Monday underscored a running paradox of Bill Clinton's life: the seemingly open conflict between his public and private behavior.
For all the qualities that have made him one of the most successful politicians of his time, his reputation consistently has been diminished by allegations of infidelity and duplicity.
Nowhere has that conflict been presented in starker terms than in the sexual harassment lawsuit filed by former Arkansas state worker Paula Corbin Jones, a case that finally reached the highest court in the land on Monday.
The Supreme Court was asked to consider whether the president's alleged private behavior, before he took that office, should be at least temporarily immune from a civil lawsuit because of the overarching responsibilities of the job. The court is scheduled to rule on the case by July.
As Clinton--the only Democrat since Franklin D. Roosevelt elected to consecutive terms--prepares for his second inaugural, he is dogged by Jones' allegations that he engaged in lewd, abusive, and possibly actionable behavior in soliciting a sex act from her in a Little Rock hotel suite in 1991 when he was governor of Arkansas.
So far, the Jones case has caused embarrassment for the president and his family, but the political damage has been limited.
Jones' claims failed to rally the kind of public indignation, especially among women, that imperiled the Supreme Court nomination of Justice Clarence Thomas. To the contrary, Clinton's re-election in November can be traced primarily to his huge margins among women voters.
Now, though, the renewed intense interest in the case creates risks for Clinton of alienating a core of those voters.
Throughout his political life, as he was earning the "Slick Willie" sobriquet from his enemies, Clinton has been able to outlast, refute or otherwise flummox his critics. By treating issues and crises alike as just another campaign to be won, employing the tactics that have been so successful for him at the ballot box, Clinton repeatedly has prevailed.
But those same tactics, which place a premium on the ability to shape and shade facts, to move quickly to quash attacks, and to spin a version of the truth, now are colliding in a forum--the courts--where the rules are far different from politics.
The looming issue for the president, not only with Jones but with the Whitewater independent counsel investigating his White House, will be whether the truth he has offered on these matters as part of a tactical campaign also will win out in the far more circumscribed arena of law. For the most part, Clinton has left comment to his surrogates, though at times he has offered indignant-sounding denials.
On Monday, the Supreme Court did not consider the substance of Jones' allegations. Rather, the justices considered only the more narrow constitutional issue of whether Clinton should have to answer her charges in the same time frame as any other citizen. Nonetheless, all the accompanying coverage of the case repeated the details of her claims.
Ironically, the effort of Clinton's team to try to discredit Jones may go a long way toward explaining why she continued with her lawsuit.
Clinton's aides and supporters vilified her. Clinton adviser James Carville equated her with "trailer" trash that would do anything for money. They suggested she was the willing tool of a group of right-wing Clinton haters. They did their own investigating of her background.
Their efforts paid off politically. Much of the media seemed to agree that Jones was less than credible, and many joined in the derisive characterizations of her as a tawdry woman with big hair and a suspect past. By the November election, few cast their votes for president with her allegations in mind.
But Jones continued to press her case. It could have been dismissed as frivolous but it was not. Indeed, by many accounts, Clinton was quite close to settling out of court. The Supreme Court agreed to hear it--albeit only for the constitutional question it presented--but it could have turned it away as it does most cases put to it for review.
To be sure, Jones has enjoyed ample support from Clinton's sworn enemies, some of whom persuaded her to come forward with her charges in the first place, just as the statute of limitations was about to expire.
Also, there are complex motivations and competing ambitions. Gilbert Davis, the lawyer who argued Jones' case before the Supreme Court, plans to run for attorney general in Virginia, and no doubt enjoys the windfall of publicity.
Clinton's lawyers argue that if the president were subject to this lawsuit, anyone could sue him for anything, rendering him unable to conduct the people's business and affairs of state.
"We'll give Ms. Jones her day in court but let's not do it now," Robert Bennett, one of Clinton's lawyers, told the justices.

The Chinese Can't Stage a Decent Show Trial
The trial of the decade — against former party heavyweight, Bo Xilai – has become a disaster for the new Chinese leadership. The charismatic Bo’s forceful assertions of innocence against charges of petty corruption and misuse of office have enlivened his supporters and made his accusers look weak and petty.
Joseph Stalin mastered the political show trial. His first, against sixteen of Lenin’s deputies and Trotsky allies, lasted five days. His second, against seventeen party officials, lasted a week. The third, against the twenty-one members of the “Bloc of Rightists and Trotskyites,” lasted almost two weeks in the presence of invited diplomats and journalists.
Stalin orchestrated his show trials as carefully staged rituals. In each, the defendants’ confessions were extracted well before the trial. They dutifully confessed in public court to horrendous crimes of murder, espionage, and treason. Official newsreels showed the repentant traitors begging for mercy. With few exceptions the defendants received the death penalty and were shot within a day or two of the trial. The Soviet press condemned the “mad dogs” in incessant drumbeats of vitriol. Factory workers organized “spontaneous” meetings to demand the supreme penalty. Confused diplomats and journalists, many of whom did not understand Russian, sat in the court room as interpreters whispered in their ears. They concluded that the show trials had exposed real plots against a Soviet Union, which had narrowly averted overthrow by sinister forces from within and without. What a success for Mr. Stalin!

Fergie's Juice Ad A First For Royals

LOS ANGELES — Britain's Duchess of York, Sarah Ferguson, who is struggling to wipe out heavy debts, shot a television commercial Monday endorsing Ocean Spray cranberry juice for which she is reportedly being paid $838,000.
Ferguson filmed the 30-second advertising spot in Los Angeles, according to a spokesman at the New York-based public relations firm Howard Rubenstein, which represents her. "She shot the commercial today, which will air on Jan. 20," the spokesman told Reuters.
Officials for Ocean Spray were not available for comment. The ad, which will be shown only in the United States, will show Fergie speaking directly to the camera, the Mirror reported. The ad marks the first time a British royal has endorsed a product on television.

Black Soldier Not Angry Over Long-Delayed Honor

Vernon Baker is not bitter that, because of his color, it has taken half a century for him to receive his nation's top military honor for heroism under fire.
"I used to be an angry young man, but I'm not angry anymore," said the 77-year-old retired Army officer from St. Maries, Idaho.
Baker will finally receive the Medal of Honor at a White House ceremony today, making him the only living black man to receive it for service in World War II. Six other black soldiers will be awarded the medal posthumously.
Although 1.7 million black Americans served in World War II, they did not receive a single one of the 432 Medals of Honor awarded.
A team of military historians concluded that segregation and racism were the reasons, and it singled out the seven men. An Army Senior Officer Awards Board recommended they get the medal.
Baker was a member of the Army's all-black 92nd Infantry. After the invasion of Italy, the 92nd stalled with the 5th Army along the Gothic Line.
Baker, then a lieutenant, and his platoon of 25 men were ordered on April 5, 1945, to lead the fight for a German stronghold.
Baker destroyed three German machine-gun nests, a bunker and an artillery observation post and shot several other German soldiers.
As Baker and his white company commander, Capt. John F. Runyon, made plans to storm the stronghold, enemy artillery shells began to rain down on them.
Runyon left with their radioman to get reinforcements, leaving Baker and the rest of the soldiers to face enemy attacks.
When it was clear reinforcements were not coming, Baker ordered the seven survivors to retreat, and on their way back he used grenades to destroy two more enemy machine-gun nests.

It's Citizen Clinton In This Case

Lawyers for President Clinton asked the Supreme Court on Monday to establish an extraordinary new privilege for the person who occupies the Oval Office: protection from having to defend himself in civil lawsuits during his entire term of office.
Some of the justices seemed skeptical, and with good reason. Granting the request would be grossly at odds with the idea of equality before the law. If a president were seriously burdened by personal lawsuits, the change might be necessary. But the legal case for shielding the nation's highest officeholder rests on mere speculation.
Bill Clinton is not in danger of being swamped with lawsuits. The real threat addressed by his legal strategy is of political and personal embarrassment.
The nation would have no trouble functioning under a president who can be sued like anyone else for his private conduct. It is not clear how Clinton himself would fare, though, if he had to answer publicly the accusation that he sexually harassed Paula Jones six years ago in a Little Rock hotel room. His lawyers can insist all they want that they seek only to protect the office of the president, but their case looks like a pretext for protecting this specific occupant.
They argued Monday that dealing with a lawsuit would be such a drain on the president's time and attention that the nation would suffer. In a simple case like this one, which could be tried in a matter of days, that is extremely unlikely. Clinton has somehow managed to testify twice by videotape in Whitewater-related criminal trials. He just managed to run a time-consuming re-election campaign while tending to his presidential duties.
The president, of course, does have unique duties. No other job demands as much of the person holding it. But that is no reason to spare him the obligation of testifying when called as a witness in criminal trials, and it is no reason for temporary civil immunity either.
As the appeals court in this case said, judges are "duty-bound" to accommodate the president's official responsibilities as much as possible--and there is every reason to think they will. His lawyers insist it would violate the separation of powers to let judges exercise any control over his schedule. But, as in the Whitewater trials, they already enjoy that power--without harm to our constitutional structure.
To grant Clinton this immunity would mean seriously delaying justice for an ordinary citizen who says he wronged her. The court should inform the president that in this dispute, he is just as much an ordinary citizen as Paula Jones.

A mass murderer leaves eight women dead
On the night of July 14, 1966, eight student nurses are brutally murdered by Richard Speck at their group residence in Chicago, Illinois. Speck threatened the women with both a gun and a knife, tying each of them up while robbing their townhouse. Over the next several hours, Speck stabbed and strangled each of the young women throughout various rooms of the place. One young woman, Corazon Amurao, managed to escape with her life by hiding under a bed; Speck had lost count of his victims.
Richard Speck was an alcoholic and a petty criminal with over 20 arrests on his record by the age of 25. He had "Born to Raise Hell" tattooed on his forearm and periodically worked on cargo boats traveling the Great Lakes. On the night of July 13, after drinking heavily at several Chicago bars, Speck broke into the townhouse for student nurses of the South Chicago Community Hospital.
Speck then used his gun to force three nurses into a bedroom, where he found three more women. Using nautical knots, he then tied the women's hands and feet with strips torn from bedsheets. By midnight, three more nurses had come home only to be tied up as well. Speck assured the women that he was only going to rob them.
After stealing from the women, he took them into separate rooms, killing them one by one. The remaining women heard only muffled screams from their roommates. Amurao, who was hiding under her bed, waited until 6 a.m. the following day before leaving her hiding place. She then crawled out onto a second-story ledge and screamed for help. Police responding to the cries obtained a detailed description of Speck from Amurao; the sketch was placed on the front page of every local newspaper the next morning. Speck, who was hiding out at a dollar-a-night hotel, slashed his right wrist and left elbow in a suicide attempt on July 16.
Speck was arrested the next day at the Cook County Hospital. With Amurao's identification and his fingerprints left at the scene, Speck was convicted and sentenced to death. However, in 1972, when the Supreme Court invalidated the death penalty law under which he was sentenced, Speck was re-sentenced to 400 years in prison. He died in prison of a heart attack on December 5, 1991.

Like innocents ambling about, just waiting to be victimized by the latest in promotional panhandling, we go through life bombarded with dubious pitches for everything from anti-aging creams to Cubic Zirconia.
But most-and maybe all-previous commercial efforts pale in comparison to the buildup for Thursday's worldwide launch of Windows 95, the revolutionary new personal computer operating system from the software giant Microsoft Corp., which is touting it like Wonder Bread.
Operating systems are the basic software that determines how a computer's screen looks and feels and also include the computer code the machines use to perform such housekeeping chores as storing files on hard drives and communicating with on-line services via modems.
But this is much more than a mere operating system.
Through many months of manufactured anticipation, thousands upon thousands of newspaper column inches trumpeting its approaching arrival, colorful banners hanging from national landmarks and a last-second blurt of blanket-like retail advertising, Microsoft has elevated hype to new, perhaps unprecedented, heights.
The hype is the creation of forces well beyond just the Redmond, Wash.-based Microsoft. While Microsoft stands to make its share of the $89.95 being charged for each box of software under stringent licensing deals with retailers, those retailers, too, have an enormous stake in the hype.
And the stakes are much greater than just boxes of software. It is widely anticipated that legions of other products will get a hypercharged boost by what Microsoft executives reverently call Launch Day.
The promotion of Windows 95 is likely to be only the beginning of more computer-related pitches.
"What this says is the industry has reached a level of maturity and a level of competition that this kind of marketing is required," said Bobby Calder, a professor of marketing at Northwestern University's Kellogg Graduate School of Management.
"We're entering a new era. It means the consumer computer software industry is entering the same stage that consumer packaged goods entered in the 1920s and '30s," Calder said.
Joining in the hyping are businesses as diverse as Gurnee-based VisionTek-which is buying ads to boast that its memory chips will let new buyers' computers take full advantage of Windows 95's powers-and the pantheon of consumer-electronics chains that have boasted for weeks of Windows 95's coming.
The campaign has blurred and often eliminated the lines between news and promotion, establishing the product itself as news. Advertising, such as the more than six pages from local retailers that appeared in the front section of Wednesday's Tribune, is merely an exclamation point to a lengthy, concerted and remarkably pervasive promotional blitz.
In England, Microsoft is paying for Thursday's entire 1.5 million-issue print run of The Times, the 307-year-old London daily, to promote the computer program's launch.
A 600-foot Windows 95 banner already hangs from Toronto's CN Tower, the world's tallest free-standing structure. And in New York, the Empire State Building will be illuminated in the product's red, yellow and green logo.

Traveling in reverse
People watching afternoon television on July 23, 1962, had regular programming interrupted by a baseball game between the Chicago Cubs and Philadelphia Phillies from Wrigley Field.
The game between two of the worst teams in the National League at the time was not important.
The important thing was, the game was being telecast live to Europe, the first time that had ever happened.
The three television networks at the time, ABC, NBC and CBS interrupted their programing because of the importance of this event.
Americans were able to see live pictures of the Eiffel Tower and scenes from Canada.
Everyone knew it was important because Walter Cronkite and Chet Huntley were both involved in bringing this breaking news to the viewers.
Everything that happened on July 23, was possible because the Telstar 1 satellite had been launched into orbit on July 10, 1962.

He said Secretary of State Rusk had made no progress in his talks with Soviet Foreign Minister Gromyko in Geneva on the Berlin impasse. Seismic instruments in the United States clearly detected a large underground explosion set off in the Sahara by France May 1. This disclosure led to suggestions that the United States might modify its long-standing demands for an international control system to police nuclear test bans. While President Kennedy said at his news conference that acceptance of a national control system, as urged by the Soviet Union, was "not the position of the United States at this time," William C. Foster, head of the United States Disarmament and Arms Control Agency, outlined the possibility of some such system. (1:7)

LONDON — Queen Elizabeth II reaped a $3.3-million profit from opening Buckingham Palace to tourists and curious taxpayers, the palace said Saturday.
The head of state moved to Scotland for two months as Buckingham Palace was opened to the public for the first time to help raise funds to repair Windsor Castle, ravaged by fire last year.
"The queen said she was well-satisfied with the amount raised for the restoration of Windsor Castle and very pleased with the results," said spokesman Dickie Arbiter.
By the time the public doors to the 18 state rooms closed Friday, 377,000 people--25% more than forecast--had taken the tour of some of the lavishly decorated halls.
The $12 palace tour is expected to become an annual event to help the Queen meet the $60-million bill for Windsor.

At a time when all forms of legal telephone surveillance are at record highs, FBI agents and local police are about to lose their ability to wiretap anyone.
Most phone companies are switching to digital systems, which transform the way a conversation is transmitted across wires or fiber-optic cables--just as the switch from rotary to touch-tone phones changed the way numbers are dialed.
On a digital system, a conversation is broken down into a series of electronic 0s and 1s, compressed and channeled into an incomprehensible buzz of telephone, facsimile, video or computer signals. Scrambling devices or coding techniques--called encryption--can add more confusion.
Intercepting a conversation on a conventional telephone line takes no more than a pair of alligator clips and a handset because the signal has not been converted or broken up, and is moving along a single wire. It is so easy that a child can do it--and many have.
FBI officials say the new technology will make it harder for agents conducting a wiretap to single out the one conversation they are authorized to intercept. Even if they can fish it out of the digital stream, new, private encryption techniques may prevent them from understanding what they intercepted.
"That is what is going to happen in the future," said James K. Kallstrom, FBI chief of investigative technology. "This is a problem being wrestled with by law enforcement and intelligence agencies in all countries in the world."
For example, the Pacific Telesis Group, which owns Pacific Bell, plans to finish modernizing its 800 central switching offices in California with the newest digital technology by 1997. This effectively will lock law enforcement agents out of many phone calls on the West Coast. Other companies across the country also are installing digital systems.
"If nothing is done, they are going to have a problem nationwide," said Ron Pete, PacTel's director of federal legislative analysis.
In the meantime, court orders for intercepts--which authorize police to tap telephones, pagers, cellular phones and electronic mail--last year rose 7%, to 919 orders involving more than 100,000 people across the country. Police also used electronic devices that record or trace the numbers of incoming and outgoing calls--without monitoring the conversations--more than 4,000 times last year, records show.
Pacific Telesis says it handled 891 court-ordered wiretaps between January, 1991, and April, 1992, up about 5% from the previous reporting period.
In 1992, the company also complied with more than 23,000 requests or subpoenas for customer phone records, up from 19,300 the year before.
The official figures do not reflect the true scope of the surveillance.
For example, a single court-ordered wiretap authorized by a California federal judge last year covered 97 people and more than 37,000 conversations, records show. Another court-authorized wiretap resulted in agents monitoring 764 people and more than 19,600 conversations. Each tap lasted 60 days.
Advanced phone technology and law enforcement have been on a collision course since 1985, when cellular phones came into fashion, FBI officials said. The central switching systems are designed in such a way that agents have a harder time carrying out wiretaps.
To tap a single cellular phone in New York City last year, agents spent more than $500,000.
"Many court orders for wiretaps could not be complied with," said the FBI's Kallstrom. "That was the case in New York City and across the United States."
Recently, FBI officials have been pushing telecommunications and computer companies to guarantee that any system they build can be monitored by the government, no matter what new technology is involved.
The FBI has been trying to persuade the companies to stop modernizing the phone network until the digital lines can be revamped so agents can conduct court-ordered wiretaps. The agency also wanted to approve any future modernization plans, PacTel officials said.
To make sure they can understand the contents of the conversations they intercept, FBI officials also are urging adoption of the Skipjack code and the Clipper Chip, which would allow them to decipher any coded phone conversation.
Last year the FBI tried unsuccessfully to persuade Congress to require that companies build wiretap capability into their systems at their own expense. PacTel officials estimated that it would cost the seven regional phone companies about $75 million each.
"And there are about another 1,200 phone companies in the United States who would have to do the same thing," Pete said. "It could run (a total of) $1 billion."

If you are overdosed by images of bloodshed in Bosnia, inured to the hellish pictures that keep staining the TV news and front pages, tired of trying to figure out who is the bad guy, perhaps the voice of a little girl can reawaken your compassion.
Today, I donate this space to Zlata Filipovic, a 12-year-old Sarajevo girl, who began keeping a diary on her 11th birthday in 1991. The diary was given by Zlata's teacher to a Bosnian anti-war group, which published it last July.
Here are some excerpts.

Dec. 26, 1991: Today was the last day in musical school for the year. I passed my music school exams with an A. Super. I sent a letter to Satricici TV and won a ticket for the Ninja Turtles Show. Yesterday was Christmas Day and we went to see Martina and Matea. Mum and Dad sent a package to Srdan in Dubrovnik. There is a real war going on in Dubrovnik. The New Year's Day is coming soon and I don't know where we are going to celebrate or who with. YO BABY YO! says the Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. He is one of my favorites on TV. Ciao!

Excerpts from Zlata's diary will be read Oct. 14 at a jazz/rock/New Age benefit at the Greek Theatre in Los Angeles. "Children Under Siege: An Evening of Music for the Children of Bosnia-Herzegovina" will feature Alan Parsons, Jon Anderson of Yes, Roberta Flack, Buffy Sainte-Marie, Mick Fleetwood, Ambrosia and Yanni, among others. Proceeds will pay for food, clothing, water and medical supplies.
Last summer, when the diary was unveiled at a ceremony in Sarajevo, Zlata told the crowd that being under siege makes her feel like a swimmer forced to jump into cold water against her will.
"I feel surprised, sad, unhappy and frightened, and I wonder where they are making me go," she said. "I enjoyed my childhood. I was warm there, I was happy there, like all the children whose childhood is being destroyed."
Zlata Filipovic will turn 13 on Dec. 3.

Reaching Out to a Forgotten Past : Profile: A scarred veteran of the streets might have been a Marine who served his country in three wars, but a friend who is trying to help says the proof is hard to find.

CULVER CITY — Wearing an orange construction helmet and reduced to sweeping gutters for spare change, David Palmer looks every inch the shell-shocked U.S. veteran he claims to be.
Scars and tattoos crisscross his wiry frame. He rambles incoherently, occasionally shouting to make points only he seems to grasp. A racking cough suggests what doctors have recently diagnosed: Palmer is suffering from lung and brain cancer and has only months to live.
It's a sad story--but one whose full tragedy has yet to be revealed, according to a man who has befriended Palmer. The friend, Charles Keefe, a self-described starving artist who lives in Palms, contends that Palmer is a former Marine who saw combat in three wars only to lose his true identity after a mysterious robbery 21 years ago.
As a result, Keefe says, Palmer has been deprived not only of official recognition of his service, but of tens of thousands of dollars in veterans benefits--as well as access to a Veterans Administration hospital.
"If he was a Marine for 30 years--if he was a Marine for one day in Vietnam--he deserves proper treatment," Keefe said. "I don't want to see him dying in the street as a psychotic."
With Palmer unable to remember key dates or places that might help to verify any service record, Keefe's claims rest on conjecture and anecdotal evidence. He has pieced together what he thinks is Palmer's chronology based on hours of conversations with a man who is clearly sick and confused.
At this point, however, the only physical evidence is a less-than-conclusive still photograph gleaned from a television documentary on the Vietnam War.
Keefe says he was watching the 1987 documentary, "Dear America: Letters Home From Vietnam" on KCET last April when he spotted a soldier who resembled Palmer. Up until that time, Keefe says, he had known Palmer only casually and had largely ignored his periodic references to military service.
Emboldened by the face in the documentary, Keefe has doggedly set about trying to prove that Palmer is who he says he is: a veteran of World War II, Korea and Vietnam, whose past was wiped out when his original name, David Robert Palmer, was somehow switched to David Louis Palmer.
A key element of Keefe's inquiry is a 1972 robbery in Los Angeles, in which Palmer claims he was robbed of all of his personal papers, including his birth certificate, Social Security card and military discharge papers.
Before the robbery, Keefe contends, Palmer was receiving state disability and welfare benefits made out to "David Palmer." After the robbery, however, Palmer began receiving government checks made out to a "David Louis Palmer," with a new Social Security number and birth date.
Any attempts to get officials to rectify the alleged errors--and Keefe says Palmer made many--have failed. Palmer, who maintains he was born Jan. 25, 1925, still receives state Medi-Cal stickers that identify him as being born on Jan. 25, 1937. For years, he has stubbornly "fixed" offending documents by hand, writing in what he believes is his true birthday.
The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, meanwhile, says it has no record of Palmer under any name. In August, Keefe took Palmer to the VA Hospital in Westwood only to see him released after 10 days. "Pt (patient) is not a veteran," the discharge form states.
A letter to Keefe from Dennis Kuewa, who works in the Department of Veterans Affairs regional office in Los Angeles, states, "We have been unable to identify Mr. Plamer (sic) in our computer system."
But Keefe is not giving up. Working off Palmer's claim that he was born in Hemsburn, W. Va., Keefe is trying to obtain his friend's birth certificate. He also has persuaded Robert Clayton, the acting chief of services for the Los Angeles County Department of Military and Veterans Affairs, to send Palmer's fingerprints to the FBI to see if they match those of some former serviceman.
Clayton, who has yet to hear back from the FBI, said there's a chance Keefe's claims are true.
"It's quite possible, but until I can get something concrete I really can't comment," Clayton said. He cautioned, "We have a lot of guys running around saying they were Green Berets and it turns out they weren't even in the service."
Another glimmer of hope is provided by James Lorenz, a retired serviceman who lives in a camper in the Venice area. Lorenz, 55, came forward after he saw an item in a Culver City weekly detailing Palmer's identity problems.
Lorenz contends that a former friend from the mid-1950s, a woman he can identify only as Eunice, spoke often of a Lt. David Palmer, whom she described as an ex-boyfriend. Eunice, Lorenz recalls, showed him documents that stated Palmer had been discharged from the Navy in 1956 as the result of a head injury.
"I believe he's the David Palmer she was talking about," Lorenz said, although he acknowledged that he has no way to know for sure.

Palmer himself can do little to solve the mystery. His condition diagnosed in at least one medical report as psychotic, he jabbers nonsensically, has trouble sitting still and cannot remember key details such as unit numbers or the locations of battles. He is homeless and has taken to sweeping the sidewalks and gutters along Venice Boulevard to earn money from passersby.
Keefe attributes the behavior at least partly to post-traumatic stress--the result of a life of combat. He says he believes, based on his conversations with Palmer, that Palmer was taken prisoner in Korea in 1953 and brainwashed and tortured for two years before being rescued. He also contends that Palmer served in Vietnam from 1965 to 1970, during which time his nose and tailbone were shattered in an ambush.
Why all that would be erased from official memory, if indeed it was, is a matter of guesswork. Keefe strongly suggests that if Palmer worked in covert operations, as he claims he did, then perhaps the government might have a reason to make him "disappear."
Another possibility is that Palmer, who has endured bouts of alcoholism and homelessness, is the victim of a benefits fraud of some sort.
For sure, he is the victim of something. Vicious scars mar Palmer's head and body--scars that Keefe insist match up anatomically with Palmer's hazy recollections of being wounded in combat.
"He's got 15 wounds on him," Keefe says. "His feet are horribly scarred. His wrists show signs of being tied up for years. He has three separate creases in his head."
Keefe says he needs the public's help to find out how it all happened. He is asking anyone who recognizes Palmer's photos--or who can otherwise shed light on Palmer's murky past--to call him at (310) 202-0853.

5 U.S. Soldiers Killed, 24 Hurt in Somali Sweep

WASHINGTON — At least five more American soldiers were killed and 24 others wounded during U.N. military operations in Somalia on Sunday--a toll that seemed certain to intensify pressures for the withdrawal of U.S. troops there.
The casualties came during another major U.N. military sweep in the area of south Mogadishu, the Somali capital, that traditionally has been controlled by fugitive warlord Mohammed Farah Aidid.
The Pentagon said two Army Black Hawk UH-60 helicopters also were "lost in action" during the operation, but officials said they had been unable to determine whether the aircraft had been shot down or crashed.
Sunday's grim statistics brought the total number of American soldiers killed in Somalia to 16. One week ago, three American airmen were killed when their Black Hawk helicopter was hit by a rocket-propelled grenade fired by a Somali gunman.
U.S. officials said Sunday's operation, which was continuing into the morning, had resulted in the capture of 20 members of Aidid's Somali National Alliance, including a high-ranking official whom they did not name.
They said U.N. authorities in Mogadishu had imposed a news blackout, and the Pentagon would not have additional reports available until this morning. It is possible that both the death toll and the number of wounded may rise.
Sunday's capture of the high-ranking official marked the second time in two weeks that a top Aidid lieutenant had been captured in such an operation. Two weeks ago, a similar sweep netted Osman Atto, Aidid's No. 2 man.

WASHINGTON — President Clinton ordered new U.S. troops and weapons to Somalia on Monday in the wake of a bloody military operation Sunday that left 12 Americans dead, 78 wounded and at least six held hostage.
The casualty figures, more than double what officials had estimated only a day earlier--and the fact that some U.S. service personnel have been taken hostage--marked a major escalation in the military confrontation in Somalia and seriously threaten Clinton's policy there.
The Pentagon had earlier reported that five Americans had been killed and 24 wounded Sunday, with the loss of two Blackhawk UH-60 attack helicopters, in a U.N. military operation in southern Mogadishu, the Somali capital.
In Mogadishu on Monday, dozens of cheering, dancing Somalis dragged the body of a U.S. soldier through the city's streets.
The U.S. reinforcements sent Monday included 220 more Army Rangers, 4 M1A1 tanks, 14 Bradley fighting vehicles, two replacement Blackhawks and 200 other troops to relieve units now stationed in the East African nation.
Defense officials also said that the Air Force would send two AC-130H gunships, which contain precision-guided 105-millimeter howitzers and a variety of other high-tech weapons, to help rout the forces of warlord Mohammed Farah Aidid in south Mogadishu. The aircraft were used briefly there in August.
The potential political impact of having U.S. servicemen held hostage by Aidid was demonstrated graphically Monday, when CNN broadcast a videotape of an American being held by Aidid's organization. The man on the tape identified himself as a Blackhawk helicopter pilot, Army Chief Warrant Officer Michael J. Durant. The Pentagon said his unit is based at Ft. Campbell, Ky.
In a scene reminiscent of those played out when U.S. POWs were captured by Iraq during the Persian Gulf War, a clearly battered Durant mumbled that "as a soldier, I have to do what I'm told." Asked on the tape about his own role, he replied nervously, "Innocent people being killed is not good."
Within minutes after the videotape had been played, the President and his top officials cautioned Aidid's forces against any mistreatment of U.S. hostages, warning that the United States would act on its own--without U.N. authority, if necessary--to retaliate.
"If anything happens to them (the U.S. hostages)," the President said, ". . . the United States--not the United Nations, the United States--will view this matter very gravely and take appropriate action."
Defense Secretary Les Aspin issued a similar admonition, warning that "we will respond forcefully if any harm comes to those who are detained." And Secretary of State Warren Christopher warned, "We're not going to go through any international body to debate."
The Pentagon identified four of the dead soldiers as: Pfc. James H. Martin Jr., 23, 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, N.Y.; Pfc. Richard W. Kowalewski Jr., 20, 75th Ranger Regiment, Fort Benning, Ga.; Sgt. James C. Joyce, 24, 75th Ranger Regiment, Ft. Benning, Ga., and Chief Warrant Officer Clifton P. Wolcott, 36, 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment (Airborne), Fort Campbell, Ky.
Clinton told reporters that he would return to Washington today after a stop in Los Angeles on Monday night and expects to have "more to say about (the Somalia situation) in the next 48 hours," presumably after meeting with his national security advisers.
Meanwhile, he indicated that the United States has no plans to change its Somalia policy, despite the weekend setback, and that U.S. troops will remain in the country until security is restored sufficiently to allow the political structure to be rebuilt.
Still, U.S. officials conceded that the Administration faces major uncertainties over the future course of the U.N. effort in Somalia, both in terms of how Aidid's forces would respond to the situation and how Congress would react at home.
Lawmakers, who demanded three weeks ago that the Administration provide a detailed exit strategy by Oct. 15, called Monday for the White House to take a "hard look" at its current policy and for the United States to withdraw its troops.
Senate Minority Leader Bob Dole (R-Kan.), who initially had supported the U.S. intervention in Somalia, said the Administration should seek the approval of Congress to alter the original mission of U.S. forces in the country.
But Capitol Hill strategists said that there still is relatively little support for any immediate congressional move to blunt the Administration's policy and predicted that the lawmakers would defer any action until the Oct. 15 deadline that they have set.
For all the dismay over the military losses that U.S. forces suffered, officials said the Ranger operation resulted in the capture of two more of Aidid's top lieutenants--Interior Minister Osman Salad and Foreign Minister Wali Hassan--who were the major targets of the raid.

The arrests of the two men is important because U.N. officials have been banking on such tactics as a way to weaken Aidid's Somali National Alliance in lieu of actually arresting the general. Last month, they caught Osman Ato, Aidid's chief financier.
The weekend's operation consisted of a series of clashes between U.S. forces and Somali militiamen that eventually involved some 400 American troops. It proved to be one of the biggest--and most costly--U.S. strikes since American troops were sent last December to help establish security so that food could be distributed to a starving nation.
Military officials said the most critical battles began in midafternoon Sunday, when about 90 U.S. Rangers, acting on intelligence reports, raided the Olympic Hotel in downtown Mogadishu in hopes of capturing Salad and Hassan.
Although the initial mission was successful--the Rangers captured 19 of Aidid's men--the mission went awry when a Blackhawk helicopter sent to help secure the area was hit by ground fire, forcing ground troops to mount a rescue operation.
About 70 of the Rangers surrounded the downed helicopter, forming a perimeter to protect wounded crewmen, but the fire they encountered from militiamen proved far heavier than expected, effectively pinning down the U.S. troops.
A few minutes later, a second U.S. helicopter crashed 2,000 yards away and a third chopper--also a Blackhawk--was hit and had to leave the area. Six chopper crewmen are still missing.
Facing a serious threat, the Americans called in the Army's Quick Reaction Force, bolstered by U.N. troops with armored vehicles from Pakistan, the United Arab Emirates and Malaysia. Shortly after dusk, the task force arrived to help.
But again, the U.N. forces were kept at bay by the heavier-than-anticipated fire from the Somalis, and it was not until 2 a.m. Somali time that the task force was able to drive the militiamen away and evacuate the wounded.
Besides the Americans who were killed, one Malaysian soldier was killed and six others were wounded and two Pakistani troops were wounded. Somali spokesmen said that several hundred Somalis also may have been killed or wounded.

WASHINGTON — Outraged by images of dead Americans being dragged through the streets of Mogadishu, many members of Congress revolted against President Clinton's Somalia policy Tuesday as Democrats and Republicans alike demanded the withdrawal of U.S. forces from the African country.
Emerging unmollified from a two-hour meeting with Secretary of State Warren Christopher and Defense Secretary Les Aspin, some lawmakers threatened to back new legislation by Sen. Robert C. Byrd (D-W.Va.) that would cut off funds for continued U.S. military involvement in Somalia.
Although congressional leaders were expected to delay consideration of the legislation for a few days to avoid embarrassing the President, an informal poll showed that both houses would back such a provision now and that the mood in Congress clearly was for some sort of action soon.
"If you asked all 535 members of Congress today, almost all of them would say let's get out of Somalia now," said Sen. Joseph R. Biden Jr. of Delaware, the second-ranking Democrat on the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. A group of 200 lawmakers met with Christopher and Aspin.
"More and more senators are saying: 'We gave them food, we gave them medicine and now they're shooting at us. Let's get out,' " said Sen. John B. Breaux (D-La.), expressing what appears to be a consensus following the latest bloodshed in Mogadishu.
Sen. Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), who said that he favors using more force if necessary to protect U.S. troops in Somalia, agreed that the Administration is becoming increasingly vulnerable on Capitol Hill because it does not have a coherent policy.
"The Administration needs a plan and it needs it now," McConnell said. "Time is running out, and in the absence of a plan, there is no question in my mind that the Byrd amendment will pass."
The rebellion came two days after 12 U.S. soldiers were killed in Somalia and 78 were wounded--and as fresh soldiers left for Somalia by plane, reinforced by M1A1 tanks and other armored vehicles.
Six American soldiers are reported missing in Mogadishu, and at least one is known to have been captured by forces of Somali warlord Mohammed Farah Aidid after a raid by U.N. troops. Several hundred Somalis were thought to have been killed or wounded in the weekend raid, along with a handful of other U.N. soldiers.
The Administration, facing the grim possibility of a protracted hostage crisis, reviewed its military options Tuesday while working through diplomatic channels to secure the return of any U.S. servicemen being held by followers of Aidid.
Clinton, just back from a three-day trip to California, met with his top national security advisers and the head of the U.S. Central Command but announced no new policy directives. Clinton has said that he will have "more to say" about Somalia today.
Officials said that the Administration is unlikely to decide on any immediate pullout from Somalia. Instead, policy-makers were said to be concentrating on how to bring political stability to Somalia more rapidly so that U.S. troops could come home more quickly.
A senior White House official said that two possible options included stepping up U.S. efforts to persuade other African countries to take over the job of rebuilding Somalia's political structure and asking other major industrial countries to take over U.S. logistics support.
However, Clinton also was said to be pondering the possibility of increasing substantially the number of American combat troops in Somalia, at least for the near term, to help restore security to south Mogadishu so that U.S. forces could withdraw more quickly than previously expected.
Asked whether the President and his advisers also were considering an immediate pullout of U.S. forces, the official effectively ruled that out as impractical, on the grounds that it would cause the collapse of the entire U.N. effort.
A plea against abandoning Somalia came from U.N. Secretary General Boutros Boutros-Ghali. "Those who were responsible for Somalia's collapse now seek to prevent Somalia's rescue and to destroy all that has so far been achieved," the secretary general told a luncheon of presidents, prime ministers and foreign ministers attending this week's sessions of the General Assembly.
The Clinton Administration began a major diplomatic push to secure the return of Chief Warrant Officer Michael J. Durant, a U.S. helicopter pilot who was captured by Somali guerrillas during last weekend's raids, and any other servicemen who may have been taken hostage.
There was no immediate word on how many U.S. soldiers besides Durant may have been taken hostage by Aidid's militiamen. The Pentagon has declined to provide any details, citing security reasons.
However, a Somali journalist with ties to Aidid said Tuesday that Aidid is holding eight U.S. soldiers captive.
Meanwhile, the Italian news agency ANSA reported that Aidid, broadcasting from a hidden radio station, warned that sending more U.S. forces to Somalia would only "worsen the situation" and urged Somalis to do "everything in their power" to defend themselves.
As it did Monday, when the hostage problem first flashed on the world's television screens, the Administration again issued a warning to Aidid that the United States will retaliate severely if any U.S. servicemen are mistreated or hurt by the Somalis.
The Pentagon announced that it had began deploying the additional troops, tanks and other heavy weapons that Clinton has ordered sent to Mogadishu, hoping to have them in place within five days.

At 8:45 a.m. on a clear Tuesday morning, an American Airlines Boeing 767 loaded with 20,000 gallons of jet fuel crashes into the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. The impact left a gaping, burning hole near the 80th floor of the 110-story skyscraper, instantly killing hundreds of people and trapping hundreds more in higher floors. As the evacuation of the tower and its twin got underway, television cameras broadcasted live images of what initially appeared to be a freak accident. Then, 18 minutes after the first plane hit, a second Boeing 767--United Airlines Flight 175--appeared out of the sky, turned sharply toward the World Trade Center, and sliced into the south tower at about the 60th floor. The collision caused a massive explosion that showered burning debris over surrounding buildings and the streets below. America was under attack.

Today's launch caps a worldwide mega-marketing blitz that is unprecedented given the product: an $89 piece of software that determines how a computer's screen looks and includes the computer code the machines use to perform such housekeeping chores as storing files and communicating with online services.
Despite being a year late and, to some observers, an underwhelming copy of the Apple Macintosh, Windows 95 is grabbing attention because of the widespread saturation of personal computers in companies and homes. Nearly two-thirds of the world's PCs contain Windows.
The Windows launch has become an event in itself, attracting an unprecedented level of media hype around the world. Microsoft is spending millions to promote the software.
Besides hiring Leno, Microsoft paid a reported $2 million to $12 million for the rights to use the Rolling Stones' song "Start Me Up," a play on the heavily promoted Start button in the new software program. The Redmond event will be beamed to gatherings in 43 cities.
In London, Microsoft bought up the entire press run of today's edition of The Times newspaper for free distribution. In New York, Microsoft has paid to have the 102-story Empire State Building bathed in the colors of its Windows 95 logo tonight.
