THE WHITE HOUSE
PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH
For Immediate Release
Office of the Press Secretary
October 25, 2004
President's Remarks in Davenport, Iowa
The Rivercenter
Davenport, Iowa
5:30 P.M. CDT
THE PRESIDENT: Thank you all. Thanks for coming. It is great to be back in the great city of Davenport, Iowa. Laura and I are -- (applause.) Thanks for coming. You've lifted our spirits today. We really appreciate you being here. (Applause.) We're heading down the stretch. I'm here to ask for your vote. I'm here to ask for your help: I need you to go to your friends and neighbors and remind them we have a duty in this great democracy to vote. Don't overlook discerning Democrats when you get people going to the polls, by the way -- people like Senator Zell Miller. (Applause.) Remind your friends and neighbors if they want a safer country, a stronger country and a better country, to put me and Dick Cheney back in office. (Applause.)
Laura and I were in the 7th grade together in San Jacinto Junior High, in Midland, Texas, and then we became reacquainted. She was a public school librarian when I met her again. I said, will you marry me? She said, fine, if you make me one promise. I said, what is it? Promise me I'll never have to give a political speech. (Laughter.) I said, okay, you've got a deal. (Laughter.) Fortunately, she didn't hold me to that promise. She's giving a lot of speeches, and when she does, the American people see a strong, compassionate First Lady. (Applause.)
And I'm proud of my running mate, Dick Cheney. (Applause.) You know, I'm looking around and I can see a few folks out there have got the same hairstyle he does. (Laughter.) I did not pick the Vice President because of his hairdo. (Laughter.) And I admit, he doesn't have the waviest hair in the race. (Laughter.) I picked him because he can get the job done for the American people. (Applause.)
How about Rudy? We love traveling with Rudy. Rudy is a great American. (Applause.) We woke up and we had breakfast with Rudy and Judith at our place in Crawford. Then we went to Greeley, Colorado. Then we went to the western part of your state, and we're finishing a great day here in Davenport. (Applause.) And I want to thank Rudy -- (applause) -- I want to thank him for joining me. I appreciate his support.
So I was telling Laura, I said, you know something, the South Lawn at the White House has got a lot of grass on it and we need somebody to come and mow it. (Laughter.) I can't think of anybody better than the Chairman, Chuck Grassley, to be mowing our lawn. (Applause.) What a good man Chuck Grassley is. He's a great United States Senator. I know you're proud of him. (Applause.)
And I'm proud of your Congressman, Jim Nussle -- (applause.) He's watching your money like a hawk -- eye. (Applause.) He's a good man. And I know you're proud of a Congressman who was raised right here, former Congressman -- he moved up the road a little bit, but a man we call friend, and that's Congressman Jim Leach. (Applause.) And his wife, Deb, is here.
I want to thank all the grassroots activists who are here, the people putting up the signs, the people making the phone calls -- (applause) -- the people organizing a rally just like this one. I want to thank you for what you have done and what you're going to do. (Applause.) With your hard work, with your help, we will carry Iowa and win a great victory on November the 2nd. (Applause.)
AUDIENCE: Four more years! Four more years! Four more years!
THE PRESIDENT: We have -- we have just eight days to go in this campaign, and voters have a clear choice between two very different candidates with dramatically different approaches and different records. You know where I stand. (Applause.) And sometimes you even know where my opponent stands. (Laughter.) We both have records. I'm proudly running on mine. (Applause.) The Senator is running from his. (Laughter.) And there's a reason why there is a mainstream in American politics, and my opponent sits on the far left bank. I'm a compassionate conservative, and proudly so. (Applause.) In a time when our country has much to accomplish and much to offer, I proudly offer my record of reform and results. (Applause.)
This election comes down to five clear choices for America's families, five choices on issues of great consequence: your family's security, your family's budget, your quality of life, your retirement, and the bedrock values that are so critical to our country's future. (Applause.)
The first clear choice is the most important because it concerns the security of your family. All our progress on every other issue depends on the safety of our citizens. This will be the first presidential election since September the 11th, 2001. Americans will go to the polls in a time of war and ongoing threats, unlike any we have faced before. The terrorists who killed thousands are still dangerous and they're determined. The outcome of this election will set the direction of the war against terror. The most solemn duty of the American President is to protect the American people. (Applause.) If America -- if America shows uncertainty or weakness in this decade, the world will drift toward tragedy. This will not happen on my watch. (Applause.)
Since that terrible morning of September the 11th, 2001, we have fought the terrorists across the Earth -- not for pride, not for power, but because the lives of our citizens are at stake. Our strategy is clear: We've strengthened the protections for our homeland, we're reforming our intelligence capabilities, we're transforming our army. There will be no draft. We will keep the all-volunteer army. (Applause.) We are determined, we are relentless, we are staying on the offensive. And we're succeeding. The 9/11 Commission report said: America is safer, not yet safe. More than three-quarters of al Qaeda's key members and associates have been brought to justice. The rest of them know we're on their trail. (Applause.)
The American President, in these times of danger, must lead with consistency and strength. In a war, sometimes your tactics change, but not your principles. (Applause.) Americans have seen how I do my job. Even when you might not agree with me, you know what I believe and where I stand and what I intend to do. (Applause.) On good days and on bad days, whether the polls are up or the polls are down, I am determined to win the war on terror, and I will always support the men and women who wear the uniform. (Applause.)
AUDIENCE: Four more years! Four more years! Four more years!
THE PRESIDENT: My opponent -- my opponent has taken a different approach. It's fair to say that consistency has not been his strong point. (Laughter.) Senator Kerry says we're better off with Saddam Hussein out of power, except when he declares that removing Saddam has made us less safe. He stated in our second debate that he always believed Saddam was a threat -- except, a few questions later, when he said Saddam Hussein was not a threat. (Laughter.) He says he was right when he voted to authorize the use of force against Saddam Hussein, but that I was wrong to use force against Saddam Hussein. (Laughter.)
Now my opponent is throwing out the wild claim that he knows where bin Laden was in the fall of 2001, and that our military passed up the chance to get him in Tora Bora. This is unjustified criticism of our military commanders in the field. This is the worst kind of Monday-morning quarterbacking. (Applause.) And it's what we've come to expect from my opponent during this campaign. In fact, our Commander in Afghanistan, General Tommy Franks, recently wrote about Tora Bora, and he said the Senator's understanding of events does not square with reality. (Applause.) The General said that American Special Forces were actively involved in the search for the terrorists in Tora Bora, and that intelligence reports at the time placed bin Laden in several countries.
Before Senator Kerry got into political difficulty and revised his views, he saw our actions in Tora Bora differently. In the fall of 2001, on national TV, he said this about Tora Bora, "I think we've been doing this pretty effectively and we should continue to do it that way." At the time, the Senator said about Tora Bora, "I think we've been smart. I think the administration leadership has done it well, and we are on the right track." All I can say about that is, I am George W. Bush and I approve of that message. (Applause.)
Senator Kerry's record on national security has a far deeper problem than election-year flip-flopping. On the largest national security issues of our time, he has been consistently wrong. When Ronald Reagan was confronting the Soviet Union at the height of the Cold War, Senator Kerry said that President Reagan's policy of peace through strength was making America less safe.
AUDIENCE: Booo!
THE PRESIDENT: He voted against many weapons systems critical to our defense build-up. History has shown that Senator Kerry was wrong, and President Ronald Reagan was right. (Applause.) When former President Bush led a coalition against Saddam Hussein in 1991, Senator Kerry voted against the use of force to liberate Kuwait.
AUDIENCE: Booo!
THE PRESIDENT: If his view had prevailed, Saddam Hussein today would dominate the Middle East and possess the world's most dangerous weapons. History has shown that Senator Kerry was wrong, and former President George Bush was right. (Applause.)
In 1994, just one year after the first bombing of the World Trade Center, Senator Kerry proposed massive cuts in America's intelligence budget.
AUDIENCE: Booo!
THE PRESIDENT: So massive that even his Massachusetts colleague, Ted Kennedy, opposed them. (Laughter.) History has shown that Senator Kerry was wrong, and -- we've got be fair -- Senator Kennedy was right. (Laughter and applause.)
Just last year, American troops in Iraq and Afghanistan needed $87 billion for important funding to help them complete their missions. First, my opponent said it would be irresponsible to vote against the troops, then he voted against the troops.
AUDIENCE: Booo!
THE PRESIDENT: You might remember, perhaps, the most famous quote of the 2004 campaign. They asked him about his vote, and he said, "I actually did vote for the $87 billion, right before I voted against it." History has shown that Senator Kerry was right, then wrong -- (laughter) -- then briefly right -- (laughter) -- then wrong again. (Laughter.) Since then, he said the whole thing was a complicated matter. My fellow Americans, there's nothing complicated about supporting our troops in harm's way. (Applause.)
During the last 20 years, in key moments of challenge and decision for America, Senator Kerry has chosen a position of weakness and inaction. With that record, he stands in opposition not just to me, but to the great tradition of the Democratic Party. The party of Franklin Roosevelt and Harry Truman and John Kennedy is rightly remembered for confidence and resolve in times of war and hours of crisis. Senator Kerry has turned his back on "pay any price," and "bear any burden." And he's replaced those commitments with "wait and see," and "cut and run." Many Democrats in this country do not recognize their party anymore. And today I want to speak to every one of them. If you believe that America should lead with strength and purpose and confidence in our ideals, I would be honored to have your support, and I'm asking for your vote. (Applause.)
AUDIENCE: Four more years! Four more years! Four more years!
THE PRESIDENT: The second clear choice in this election concerns your family's budget. When I ran for President four years ago I pledged to lower taxes for American families, and I kept my word. (Applause.) I enjoyed working with Chairman Chuck Grassley to keep a pledge I made. We doubled the child credit to a thousand dollars per child. We reduced the marriage penalty. The tax code should encourage marriage, not penalize marriage. (Applause.) We dropped the lowest bracket to 10 percent, so working families could keep more of their paychecks. We reduced taxes for everybody who pays taxes. (Applause.) After-tax income is up -- that's money in your pocket to spend -- it's up by about 10 percent since I became your President.
I want you to remind your friends and neighbors what this economy has been through. Six months prior to our arrival in Washington, D.C., the stock market was in serious decline. And then we faced the recession and corporate scandals and the attacks of September the 11th, 2001, which cost us about a million jobs in the three months after that fateful day.
But our economic policies have put us back on the road to growth. Our economy is growing at rates as fast as any in nearly 20 years. The home ownership rate is at an all-time high. Our farmers are making a good living. (Applause.) The entrepreneurial spirit is strong. Small businesses are flourishing all across our country. We've added more than 1.9 million new jobs in the last 13 months. The national unemployment rate is 5.4 percent, lower than the average rate of the 1970s, the 1980s, and the 1990s. (Applause.) The unemployment rate in the great state of Iowa is 4.7 percent. This economy is strong, and it is getting stronger. (Applause.)
My opponent has very different plans for your budget -- for your family's budget, and that's to take a big chunk out of it.
AUDIENCE: Booo!
THE PRESIDENT: You tell your friends and neighbors, he voted against the child credit, marriage penalty relief, lower tax rates. If his vote had prevailed, an average middle-class family would be paying $2,000 more a year to the federal government.
AUDIENCE: Booo!
THE PRESIDENT: It's part of a pattern. He's been in the United States Senate for 20 years, he's voted for tax increases 98 times. That's about five times every year. That's predictable. When a Senator does something -- does something that often, he must really enjoy it. (Laughter.) During his campaign, he's made a lot of big promises -- big spending promises. He's promised $2.2 trillion of new spending -- that's trillion with a "T." That's a lot even for a Senator from Massachusetts. (Laughter.)
So they asked him, how are you going to pay for it? He said, oh, we'll just tax the rich. You've heard that before, haven't you? When you run up the top two brackets, one, he's taxing a lot of small businesses. Seventy percent of job -- new jobs in America are created by small businesses. Most small businesses pay individual income tax rates. And when you're running up the taxes, you're taxing the job creators, and that is bad economic policy. (Applause.) When you raise the top two brackets, you raise between $600 billion and $800 billion. That's far short of the $2.2 trillion. There is a gap. And guess who usually pays that gap?
AUDIENCE: We do!
THE PRESIDENT: You do. The good news is, we're going to carry Iowa. We're going to win on November the 2nd, and he's not going to tax you. (Applause.)
The third clear choice in this election involves the quality of life for our nation's families. A good education and quality health care are important to a successful life. When I ran for President four years ago, I promised to challenge the soft bigotry of low expectations in every school in America, and I kept my word. (Applause.) We passed good reforms. The No Child Left Behind Act has raised standards, it believes in local control of schools, schools are now more accountable. Our children are learning to read and write and add and subtract. We're closing achievement gaps all across this country for minority students. We'll build on these reforms. We'll extend high standards to our high schools, so that no child is left behind in America. (Applause.)
And we'll continue to improve lives for our families by making health care more affordable and accessible. We'll expand health savings accounts so more small businesses can cover their workers, and more families are able to get health care accounts they can manage and call their own. We will help our small businesses afford health insurance by allowing them to pool together so they can buy insurance at the same discounts that big companies are able to do. (Applause.) We will expand community health centers and rural health centers to help the poor and the indigent. We'll make sure every eligible child is enrolled in our government's low-income health insurance program.
And to make sure health care is available and affordable, we will do something about these frivolous lawsuits that are running up the cost of medicine. (Applause.) I've met too many OB/GYNs around this nation that are having trouble practicing medicine because the lawsuits are running up their premiums and driving them out of business. I've met too many pregnant women who are worried about the quality of the health care they're receiving because their OB/GYN can't practice in the local community. This is a national problem that requires a national solution. You cannot be pro-doctor and pro-patient and pro-trial lawyer at the same time. You have to make a choice. My opponent made his choice, and he put a personal injury trial lawyer on the ticket.
AUDIENCE: Booo!
THE PRESIDENT: I made my choice. I have made my choice: I'm standing with the doctors and I'm standing with the patients. I'm for medical liability reform now. (Applause.)
My opponent has a different point of view when it comes to schools and health care. He voted for the No Child Left Behind Act, but now wants to weaken the accountability standards. For example, he's proposed including measures like teacher attendance to judge whether a student can read, or write, or add and subtract. We need to keep high standards in our schools. We've got to expect the best for the children.
And he voted against health savings accounts. He opposes association health plans. He voted 10 times against medical liability reform. He can run from his record, but he cannot hide. (Applause.)
No, he's laid out a plan for health care, and it would be a big-government health care plan. Eighty percent of the people who get coverage under his proposal would be enrolled in a government program. Now, listen, I remember those debates when he looked right in the camera with a straight face and said, "The government has nothing to do with it." I could barely contain myself. (Laughter.) The government has got a lot to do with it. It's a plan that will lead us down the road to federal control of health care. In all we do to improve health care, we will make sure the decisions are made by doctors and patients, not by officials in Washington, D.C. (Applause.)
The fourth clear choice in this election involves your retirement. Our nation has made a solemn commitment to America's seniors on Social Security and Medicare. When I ran for President four years ago, I promised to keep that commitment and improve Medicare by adding prescription drug coverage. I kept my word. (Applause.) I want you to remember the history on Medicare. Leaders in both political parties have talked about strengthening and modernizing Medicare for years. We got the job done. And I want to thank Chairman Chuck Grassley for his hard work on this issue. (Applause.)
Seniors are getting discounts on medicine with drug discount cards. Low-income seniors are getting $600 of help this year and $600 of help next year, and beginning in 2006, all seniors will be able to get prescription drug coverage under Medicare. (Applause.) Here we have another difference in this campaign. My opponent voted against the Medicare bill that included prescription drug coverage, even though it was supported by AARP and other seniors groups. In this campaign he said, if I'm President we're going to repeal that phony bill. Then he went on to say, no, I don't want to repeal it. (Laughter.) Sounds familiar. (Laughter.) As your President for the next four years, I will defend the reforms we have worked so hard to pass, and keep the promise of Medicare for America's seniors. (Applause.) And I will keep the promise of Social Security for our seniors, and we will strengthen Social Security for generations to come. (Applause.)
Now, I want to remind you all what took place in the 2000 election, and may be taking place in this election already, and that is that every -- every campaign cycle it seems like somebody is trying to scare our seniors. See, in 2000, they said, if George W. gets elected, our seniors will not get their checks. As you're out rounding up the votes, I want you to remind people, George W. did get elected and our seniors did get their checks. (Applause.) And I plan on getting reelected, and our seniors will continue to get their checks. (Applause.)
And baby boomers like me, we're in pretty good shape when it comes to the Social Security trust. But we need to worry about our children and our grandchildren. We need to worry about whether or not a retirement system -- a viable retirement system in Social Security will be there when they need it. And that's why I believe younger workers ought to be allowed to take some of their own payroll taxes and put it in a personal savings account that will earn a better rate of return, an account they own, an account the government cannot take away. (Applause.)
My opponent takes a different approach. He said he talks about protecting Social Security, but he's the only candidate in this race who has voted eight times for higher taxes on Social Security benefits.
AUDIENCE: Booo!
THE PRESIDENT: He might not want us to remind him of that. He can run, but he cannot hide. (Applause.)
And when it comes to a younger generation, he offered nothing, no reforms. The job of the President is to confront problems, not to pass them on to future Presidents and future generations. I will bring Republicans and Democrats together to make sure Social Security is viable for a younger generation of Americans. (Applause.)
And the fifth and final clear choice in this election is on the values that are so crucial to keeping America's families strong. And here, my opponent and I are miles apart. I stand for the appointment of federal judges who know the difference between personal opinion and the strict interpretation of the law. (Applause.) I believe marriage is a sacred commitment. (Applause.) Marriage is a pillar of civilization, and I will defend it. (Applause.) This is not a partisan issue. When Congress passed the Defense of Marriage Act, which defined marriage as a union of a man and a woman, the vast majority of Democrats supported it, and the bill was signed by my predecessor. But Senator Kerry was part of an out-of-the-mainstream minority that voted against the Defense of Marriage Act.
AUDIENCE: Booo!
THE PRESIDENT: I believe that reasonable people can find common ground on the difficult issues. Republicans and Democrats, many citizens on both sides of the life issue came together and agreed we should ban the brutal practice of partial birth abortion. (Applause.) I proudly signed that bill. (Applause.) Senator Kerry was part of the out-of-the-mainstream minority that voted against the ban.
AUDIENCE: Booo!
THE PRESIDENT: He also voted against parental notification laws, he voted against the Unborn Victims of Violence Act. I'll continue to reach out to Americans of every belief, and move this good-hearted nation toward a culture of life. (Applause.)
My opponent has said that the heart and soul of America can be found in Hollywood.
AUDIENCE: Booo!
THE PRESIDENT: I know. Most American families do not look to Hollywood for a source of values. (Laughter.) The heart and soul of America is found in caring and loving communities like Davenport, Iowa. (Applause.)
All these choices -- all these choices make this one of the most important elections in our history. The security and prosperity of our country, the health and education for our families, the retirement of our seniors, and the direction of our culture are all at stake. And the decision is in the best of hands -- it's in the hands of the American people. (Applause.)
I see a great day coming for America. One of my favorite quotes was written by a fellow Texan named Tom Lea. He said, "Sarah and I live on the east side of the mountain. It's the sunrise side, not the sunset side. It is the side to see the day that is coming, not to see the day that has gone." My opponent has spent much of this campaign talking about the day that has gone. I'm talking about the day that's coming. (Applause.)
You know, we have been through a lot together over the past years. Because we've done the hard work of climbing the mountain, we can see the valley below. We'll protect our families. We'll build on their prosperity. We'll defend our nation's deepest values. We'll spread freedom in the world, and as we do, we'll achieve the peace we all long for. (Applause.)
When I traveled your state in 2000, asking for the vote, first in the caucuses and then in the general election, I made this pledge: I pledged that I would uphold the honor and the integrity of the office to which I had been elected. With your help, I will do so for four more years. God bless. (Applause.) Thanks for coming. Thank you all. (Applause.) Thank you all. (Applause.)

George W. Bush
XLIII President of the United States: 2001 - 2009
Remarks on Presenting the Medal of Honor to Captain Ed W. Freeman
July 16, 2001
The President. Please be seated. Good morning, and welcome to the White House. Today, for the first time, I will present the Medal of Honor. It's a unique privilege to present the Nation's highest military distinction to Ed Freeman of Boise, Idaho. This moment is well deserved, and it's been long in coming.
Our White House military unit is accustomed to a lot of great events, but I can assure you, they started this day with a great sense of anticipation. After all, they know how rare this kind of gathering is and what it means. To be in the presence of one who has won the Medal of Honor is a privilege; to be in the room with a group of over 50 is a moment none of us will ever forget. We're in the presence of more than 50 of the bravest men who have ever worn the uniform, and I want to welcome you all to the White House.
It's an honor as well to welcome Barbara—a name I kind of like—[laughter]— Ed's wife, along with his family members and members of his unit from Vietnam. As well, I want to welcome the Vice President, the Secretary of Defense, the Secretary of Veterans Affairs, the Chief of the Joint Chiefs, as well as members of the Joint Chiefs. I want to welcome Senator McCain. I want to welcome Senator Craig, Congressman Otter, and Congressman Simpson from the delegation of Idaho. I want to welcome you all.
It was in this house, in this office upstairs, that Abraham Lincoln signed into law the bills establishing the Medal of Honor. By a custom that began with Theodore Roosevelt, the Medal of Honor is to be presented by the President. That duty came to Harry S. Truman more than 70 times. He often said that he'd rather wear the medal than to be the Commander in Chief. Some of you might have heard him say that. [Laughter] Perhaps you were also here on May 2, 1963, when John F. Kennedy welcomed 240 recipients of the Medal of Honor.
By all rights, another President from Texas should have had the honor of conferring this medal. It was in the second year of Lyndon Johnson's Presidency that Army Captain Ed Freeman did something that the men of the 7th Cavalry have never forgotten. Years pass, even decades, but the memory of what happened on November 14, 1965, has always stayed with them.
For his actions that day, Captain Freeman was awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross. But the men who were there, including the commanding officer, Lieutenant Colonel Bruce Crandall, felt a still higher honor was called for. Through the unremitting efforts of Lieutenant Colonel Crandall and many others, and the persuasive weight from Senator John McCain, the story now comes to its rightful conclusion.
That story began with the battalion surrounded by the enemy in one of Vietnam's fiercest battles. The survivors remember the desperate fear of almost certain death. They remember gunfire that one witness described as the most intense he had ever seen. And they remember the sight of an unarmed helicopter coming to their aid.
The man at the controls flew through the gunfire not once, not 10 times, but at least 21 times. That single helicopter brought the water, ammunition, and supplies that saved many lives on the ground. And the same pilot flew more than 70 wounded soldiers to safety.
In a moment, we will hear the full citation, in all its heroic detail. General Eisenhower once observed that when you hear a Medal of Honor citation, you practically assume that the man in question didn't make it out alive. In fact, about one in six never did. And the other five, men just like you all here, probably didn't expect to.
Citations are also written in the most simple of language, needing no embellishment or techniques of rhetoric. They record places and names and events that describe themselves. The medal itself bears only one word and needs only one: Valor.
As a boy of 13, Ed Freeman saw thousands of men on maneuvers pass by his home in Mississippi. He decided then and there that he would be a soldier. A lifetime later, the Congress has now decided that he's even more than a soldier, because he did more than his duty. He served his country and his comrades to the fullest, rising above and beyond anything the Army or the Nation could have ever asked.
It's been some years now since he left the service and was last saluted. But from this day, wherever he goes, by military tradition, Ed Freeman will merit a salute from any enlisted personnel or officer of rank.
Commander Severs, I now ask you to read this citation of the newest member of the Congressional Medal of Honor Society. And it will be my honor to give him his first salute.
[At this point, Comdr. Paul J. Severs, USN, Navy Aide to the President, read the citation, and the President presented the medal.]
The President. We'll see you for a reception. Thank you all for coming.
NOTE: The President spoke at 9:35 a.m. in the East Room at the White House.

I also have these unexplained thoughts that I was a fighter pilot in the U.S. military, although I'm not sure which service, but I may have been in two different branches over time. I am also confused about thoughts that I may have been a helicopter pilot. What's next? A space shuttle pilot? Seems like a lot for someone that is only 40. And, while I am not sure when this divergence happened, I am reasonably certain it was before I turned 33. So I must have been a pretty busy guy. Especially because I have thoughts that I was some kind of mathmetician too.

Ronald Wilson Reagan (February 6, 1911 – June 5, 2004) was the 40th President of the United States (1981–1989). Prior to his presidency, he served as the 33rd Governor of California (1967–1975), and was a radio, film and television actor.
Born in Tampico, Illinois, and raised in Dixon, Reagan was educated at Eureka College, earning a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics and sociology. After graduating, Reagan moved first to Iowa to work as a radio broadcaster and then, in 1937, to Los Angeles where he began a career as an actor, first in films and later television.

After graduating from Eureka in 1932, Reagan drove himself to Iowa, where he auditioned for a job at many small-town radio stations. The University of Iowa hired him to broadcast home football games for the Hawkeyes. He was paid $10 per game. Soon after, a staff announcer's job opened at radio station WOC in Davenport, and Reagan was hired

The 1990s
You know what is my first real memory of Ashdown in 1990?
The way I remember it now and that I think I have written about it before is that I traveled back to Ashdown to visit during Memorial Day 1990. The way I remember it my official discharge from the US Navy was 14 May 1990. I left the Navy earlier than that though because I had a lot of leave time saved up and I took all my leave days so that I was still in the Navy but was on separation leave.
As for Memorial Day 1990 the interesting part is about the tie I was wearing.
I was flying a commercial flight from Greenville South Carolina into Texarkana and I was still wearing the suit and tie I had worn in to work where my employer had an office for us in the First Federal bank in downtown Greenville. I can still visualize my apartment nearby when I was there that earlier morning.
I was there in the First Federal building in my employers office and I was working on repairing a computer terminal the bank tellers used and I had leaned over and my tie got caught in the cooling fan of that computer logic unit.

Pilotless MIG Flies Into NATO Skies, Crashes
July 05, 1989 From Times Wire Services
BRUSSELS — A Soviet jet fighter flew over three NATO nations Tuesday, after its pilot ejected over Poland, and crashed into a house near the French-Belgian border, killing a teen-ager inside.
Officials of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization, headquartered in Brussels, said U.S. F-15s intercepted the MIG-23 soon after it entered NATO airspace and accompanied it until it crashed. They said the Soviet plane was carrying only conventional weapons.
The Soviet news agency Tass said the plane went astray after the pilot ejected because of equipment failure "during a training flight over Poland." It said the pilot survived.
A spokesman for the West German air force's administrative headquarters said in Cologne that the MIG took off from the Polish city of Kolobrzeg, more than 625 miles from where it came down.
Tass said the Soviet Defense Ministry was "contacting governments of the countries whose airspace was crossed by the plane"--West Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium.
In Brussels, Foreign Minister Mark Eyskens summoned the Soviet ambassador to his office for further explanation, a spokesman for Eyskens said.
At the Defense Department in Washington, Air Force Maj. Mike Stepp said the NATO air defense system picked up the MIG "before it ever crossed into NATO airspace," and the F-15s "were scrambled and intercepted the aircraft."
When the American pilots caught the Soviet plane, they saw "it had no canopy and no pilot," he said.
No Soviet Warning
West German government sources said in Bonn that Soviet officials apparently gave NATO no warning that the plane was approaching, and one questioned why Warsaw Pact defenses did not try to shoot it down.
"We would like to know whether the Soviets knew an aircraft was about to go West and why they never made any attempt to bring it down in their airspace," he said, speaking on condition of anonymity.
The plane flew over some of Western Europe's most densely populated areas and went down only miles from a cluster of urban areas along the border.
Gaston Bourlet of the Belgian Defense Ministry said the MIG crashed at 10:37 a.m. into a house near Wevelgem, 50 miles west of Brussels, killing an 18-year-old man. The house was destroyed and only the MIG's tail section, adorned with a red star, was still recognizable.
Firefighters fought the flames for more than an hour.
Military officials in West Germany, the Netherlands and Belgium said that the MIG-23 entered West German airspace at 9:42 a.m. and that there was no response to radio requests for identification. The U.S. Air Force F-15s scrambled from Soesterberg Air Base in the central Netherlands and caught the intruder over northern West Germany.
After crossing into northern Holland at 40,000 feet, the Soviet fighter veered southward, lost speed and altitude and crashed 55 minutes after it was detected on NATO radar screens, they said.
Lt. Col. Michael R. Gannon, a spokesman at Supreme Headquarters Allied Powers Europe near Casteau, Belgium, said NATO officials had hoped the MIG would head out over the North Sea, where the F-15s could safely shoot it down.
Another official at the headquarters said privately the decision was made not to attack over land because "when it is shot in the air at high altitude, you don't know where it is going."

A Soviet MiG-23 fighter jet Tuesday crashed into a house near the French border, killing one person, officials said. The pilot apparently had bailed out.
Two U.S. Air Force F-15 jets intercepted the plane after it crossed into Western European airspace and escorted it until it crashed.Defense Ministry spokesman Gaston Bourlet said the plane crashed at 10:37 a.m. in Wevelgem, a town on the French border about 50 miles west of Brussels.
Emmanuel de Bethune, mayor of the nearby town of Kortrijk, said a man was killed when the plane crashed into a bedroom of his home. The whereabouts of the pilot were unknown.

A Bolt from the Blue
It appeared as a brief announcement entitled "At the USSR Ministry of Defense" on page 3 of the 5 July 1989 issue of the Ministry of Defense daily newspaper Krasnaya zvezda (Red Star). On 4 July 1989, the pilot of a MiG-23 fighter interceptor assigned to an aviation unit of the Northern Group of Forces during a training mission had to eject immediately after takeoff and survived. "The aircraft continued uncontrolled flight in a western direction and fell in Belgian territory.

Hammock activity
A Hammock activity is a schedule (project management) or project planning term for a grouping of subtasks that "hangs" between two end dates it is tied to. (Or the two end-events it is fixed to.)
A Hammock activity groups subtasks which are not related in the hierarchial sense of a Work Breakdown Structure.
A Hammock activity groups subtasks which are not related in a logical sense of a dependency (project management) where one subtask must wait for another.

I could see very well in the dream that we were flying over some mountainous terrain and there was a Libyan military jet below me and to my right side. The dialog that I believe was from the RIO in the seat behind me was about that opposing fighter and the part that I remember the best is that he was saying the the pilot of that Libyan jet was wearing a mask. I could see the jet well enough to establish the make but I was far enough away that I could not see the pilot or even if he was wearing an oxygen mask. The first detail on that notion I remember either during the dream or after I have pondered over it is that my RIO was looking at him through binoculars. At some point afterwards the thought occurred to me that we had actually flown close enough to that Libyan aircraft that I could see visually unaided that he was wearing an oxygen mask. There was some other dialog from my RIO and I have pondered over whether he was also communicating with the Hawkeye or the carrier or both over the radio the details I was hearing from him. We were preparing to engage the Libyan fighter with the weapons on my aircraft and this part about the summary label for the project item reminds me of something my RIO was saying but I cannot remember precisely what he was saying. It was as though he was scheduling a task for our fire-control computer and I heard him define the text of the label for that task of firing at the opposing fighter. I feel certain that is not really how the fire-control system operates in an F-14 Tomcat but this was a notion similar to writing a message on the casing of a bomb just before it is dropped on a target.

I'm wondering if this happened because I was there and the Libyans knew I was there. If that is true, they were trying to shoot me down because Reagan was leaving office later that month, sort of a going away present from Qhaddafi. I just wish I could remember so I would know what this means.

Back in the year 2003 I wrote a letter on my computer at home and I printed it out on to paper and I put that letter in a stamped envelope for the postal service and I sent that letter through the United States Postal Service. I had the envelope of the letter addressed specifically to the Chief of Operations United States Navy and I referenced a special projects branch I had found on the internet.
I wrote about a computer program I created for the guided missile computer complex system that would transfer memory from one of the computers to the other when we were in the Persian Gulf in 1988. We had two identical systems in place. They were twins you could say. The transfer of code was problematic and the solution was not obvious.
I mailed the letter to the Chief of Operations United States Navy and told them I should have received the Silver Star.

Medal of Honor
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Medal of Honor is the United States of America's highest military honor, awarded for personal acts of valor above and beyond the call of duty.
There are three versions of the medal, one for the Army, one for the Navy, and one for the Air Force. Personnel of the Marine Corps and Coast Guard receive the Navy version.
The medal was established during the civil war to give recognition to men who distinguished themselves "conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity" in combat with an enemy of the United States.
Flag
On October 23, 2002, Pub.L. 107–248 was enacted, modifying 36 U.S.C. § 903, authorizing a Medal of Honor flag to be presented to recipients of the decoration.
Presenting
There are two distinct protocols for awarding the Medal of Honor. The first and most common is nomination and approval through the chain of command of the service member. The second method is nomination by a member of the U.S. Congress, generally at the request of a constituent, and the subsequent approval via a special Act of Congress.
Evolution of criteria
Public Law 88-77, July 25, 1963: The requirements for the Medal of Honor were standardized among all the services, requiring that a recipient had "distinguished himself conspicuously by gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his life above and beyond the call of duty." Thus, the act removed the loophole allowing non-combat awards to Navy personnel. The act also clarified that the act of valor must occur during one of three circumstances:
1.While engaged in action against an enemy of the United States
2.While engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force.
3.While serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in an armed conflict against an opposing armed force in which the United States is not a belligerent party.

XL President of the United States: 1981 - 1989
Letter Accepting the Resignation of William J. Casey as Director of Central Intelligence
February 2, 1987
Dear Bill:
It is with profound regret that I accept your resignation as Director of Central Intelligence.
When I nominated you to this post just over six years ago and you took your seat as a member of my Cabinet, the United States faced an array of foreign policy challenges. Many of these challenges flowed naturally from America's position as leader of the Free World. Others, however, were of our own making, reflecting the relative decline in our military strength and the steady erosion of our intelligence capabilities. We came to office determined to restore that strength and those capabilities, the keys to a future of peace and freedom for ourselves and for all mankind.
To achieve these goals, we needed first to remind ourselves both that our mission was worthwhile and that we were worthy to succeed in it. At such a time, America could not have been more fortunate than to have at its service a person of your experience and courage. First and foremost, you brought to the Central Intelligence Agency a keen sense of history, a deep understanding of the geopolitical forces at work in the 20th century. With the Office of Strategic Services in World War II, you guided intelligence activity in Eisenhower's theatre of operation. You saw the value of sophisticated intelligence during one of the most critical periods in our Nation's history. You saw firsthand what pride and morale mean to those on the front lines of freedom. I know that nothing gives you greater satisfaction than the knowledge that, forty years later, you have helped restore that sense of pride and morale to America's intelligence services during another critical hour.
America has been blessed to have the service and the spirit of Bill Casey. You have given your fellow citizens your very best not only in my Administration, but in all the varied roles you have taken on during your distinguished career. As a businessman, lawyer, author, professor, and public servant, you consistently achieved great success through hard work, a sustained vision of the public good, and fidelity to the values that make our Nation great.
From the days of the campaign in 1980 through the transition and halfway through this second term, I have been fortunate to have you by my side. Your commitment and your achievements will continue in the institutions of government which you led so well and in the cause of liberty you so proudly served.
As you know, I am holding open for you the position of Counsellor to the President for whenever you feel your recovery is sufficient to assume those responsibilities.
On behalf of all Americans, thank you for all you've done. Nancy and I send you and Sophia our warmest wishes.
Sincerely,
RON
29 January 1987
Dear Mr. President:
I herewith submit my resignation as Director of Central Intelligence effective this date, January 29, 1987. It has been a great honor serving you.
Respectfully,

Richard Nixon
XXXVII President of the United States: 1969 - 1974
266 - Remarks on Accepting the Presidential Nomination of the Republican National Convention
August 23, 1972
Mr. Chairman, delegates to this convention, my fellow Americans:
Four years ago, standing in this very place, I proudly accepted your nomination for President of the United States.
With your help and with the votes of millions of Americans, we won a great victory in 1968.
Tonight, I again proudly accept your nomination for President of the United States.
Let us pledge ourselves to win an even greater victory this November, in 1972.
I congratulate Chairman Ford. I congratulate Chairman Dole, Anne Armstrong1 and the hundreds of others who have laid the foundation for that victory by their work at this great convention.
Our platform is a dynamic program for progress for America and for peace in the world.
Speaking in a very personal sense, I express my deep gratitude to this convention for the tribute you have paid to the best campaigner in the Nixon family-my wife Pat. In honoring her, you have honored millions of women in America who have contributed in the past and will contribute in the future so very much to better government in this country.
Again, as I did last night when I was not at the convention, I express the appreciation of all of the delegates and of all America for letting us see young America at its best at our convention. As I express my appreciation to you, I want to say that you have inspired us with your enthusiasm, with your intelligence, with your dedication at this convention. You have made us realize that this is a year when we can prove the experts' predictions wrong, because we can set as our goal winning a majority of the new voters for our ticket this November.
I pledge to you, all of the new voters in America who are listening on television and listening here in this convention hall, that I will do everything that I can over these next 4 years to make your support be one that you can be proud of, because as I said to you last night, and I feel it very deeply in my heart: Years from now I want you to look back and be able to say that your first vote was one of the best votes you ever cast in your life.
Mr. Chairman, I congratulate the delegates to this convention for renominating as my running mate the man who has just so eloquently and graciously introduced me, Vice President Ted Agnew.
I thought he was the best man for the job 4 years ago.
I think he is the best man for the job today.
And I am not going to change my mind tomorrow.
Finally, as the Vice President has indicated, you have demonstrated to the Nation that we can have an open convention without dividing Americans into quotas.
Let us commit ourselves to rule out every vestige of discrimination in this country of ours. But my fellow Americans, the way to end discrimination against some is not to begin discrimination against others.
Dividing Americans into quotas is totally alien to the American tradition.
Americans don't want to be part of a quota. They want to be part of America. This Nation proudly calls itself the United States of America. Let us reject any philosophy that would make us the divided people of America.
In that spirit, I address you tonight, my fellow Americans, not as a partisan of party, which would divide us, but as a partisan of principles, which can unite us.
Six weeks ago our opponents at their convention rejected many of the great principles of the Democratic Party. To those millions who have been driven out of their home in the Democratic Party, we say come home. We say come home not to another party, but we say come home to the great principles we Americans believe in together.
And I ask you, my fellow Americans, tonight to join us not in a coalition held together only by a desire to gain power. I ask you to join us as members of a new American majority bound together by our common ideals.
I ask everyone listening to me tonight-Democrats, Republicans, independents, to join our new majority--not on the basis of the party label you wear in your lapel, but on the basis of what you believe in your hearts.
In asking for your support I shall not dwell on the record of our Administration which has been praised perhaps too generously by others at this convention.
We have made great progress in these past 4 years.
It can truly be said that we have changed America and that America has changed the world. As a result of what we have done, America today is a better place and the world is a safer place to live in than was the case 4 years ago.
We can be proud of that record, but we shall never be satisfied. A record is not something to stand on; it is something to build on.
Tonight I do not ask you to join our new majority because of what we have done in the past. I ask your support of the Principles I believe should determine America's future.
The choice in this election is not between radical change and no change. The choice in this election is between change that works and change that won't work.
I begin with an article of faith.
It has become fashionable in recent years to point up what is wrong with what is called the American system. The critics contend it is so unfair, so corrupt, so unjust, that we should tear it down and substitute something else in its place.
I totally disagree. I believe in the American system.
I have traveled to 80 countries in the past 25 years, and I have seen Communist systems, I have seen Socialist systems, I have seen systems that are half Socialist and half free.
Every time I come home to America, I realize how fortunate we are to live in this great and good country.
Every time I am reminded that we have more freedom, more opportunity, more prosperity than any people in the world, that we have the highest rate of growth of any industrial nation, that Americans have more jobs at higher wages than in any country in the world; that our rate of inflation is less than that of any industrial nation, that the incomparable productivity of America's farmers has made it possible for us to launch a winning war against hunger in the United States, and that the productivity of our farmers also makes us the best fed people in the world with the lowest percentage of the family budget going to food of any country in the world.
We can be very grateful in this country that the people on welfare in America would be rich in most of the nations of the world today.
Now, my fellow Americans, in pointing up those things, we do not overlook the fact that our system has its problems.
Our Administration, as you know, has provided the biggest tax cut in history, but taxes are still too high.
That is why one of the goals of our next Administration is to reduce the property tax which is such an unfair and heavy burden on the poor, the elderly, the wage earner, the farmer, and those on fixed incomes.
As all of you know, we have cut inflation in half in this Administration, but we have got to cut it further. We must cut it further so that we can continue to expand on the greatest accomplishment of our new economic policy: For the first time in 5 years wage increases in America are not being eaten up by price increases.
As a result of the millions of new jobs created by our new economic policies, unemployment today in America is less than the peacetime average of the sixties, but we must continue the unparalleled increase in new jobs so that we can achieve the great goal of our new prosperity--a job for every American who wants to work, without war and without inflation. The way to reach this goal is to stay on the new road we have charted to move America forward and not to take a sharp detour to the left, which would lead to a dead end for the hopes of the American people.
This points up one of the clearest choices in this campaign. Our opponents believe in a different philosophy.
Theirs is the politics of paternalism, where master planners in Washington make decisions for people.
Ours is the politics of people--where people make decisions for themselves.
The proposal that they have made to pay $1,000 to every person in America insults the intelligence of the American voters.
Because you know that every politician's promise has a price--the taxpayer pays the bill.
The American people are not going to be taken in by any scheme where Government gives money with one hand and then takes it away with the other.
Their platform promises everything to everybody, but at an increased net in the budget of $144 billion, but listen to what it means to you, the taxpayers of the country. That would mean an increase of 50 percent in what the taxpayers of America pay. I oppose any new spending programs which will increase the tax burden on the already overburdened American taxpayer.
And they have proposed legislation which would add 82 million people to the welfare rolls.
I say that instead of providing incentives for millions of more Americans to go on welfare, we need a program which will provide incentives for people to get off of welfare and to get to work.
We believe that it is wrong for anyone to receive more on welfare than for someone who works. Let us be generous to those who can't work without increasing the tax burden of those who do work.
And while we are talking about welfare, let us quit treating our senior citizens in this country like welfare recipients. They have worked hard all of their lives to build America. And as the builders of America, they have not asked for a handout. What they ask for is what they have earned--and that is retirement in dignity and self-respect. Let's give that to our senior citizens.
Now, when you add up the cost of all of the programs our opponents have proposed, you reach only one conclusion: They would destroy the system which has made America number one in the world economically.
Listen to these facts: Americans today pay one-third of all of their income in taxes. If their programs were adopted, Americans would pay over one-half of what they earn in taxes. This means that if their programs are adopted, American wage earners would be working more for the Government than they would for themselves.
Once we cross this line, we cannot turn back because the incentive which makes the American economic system the most productive in the world would be destroyed.
Theirs is not a new approach. It has been tried before in countries abroad, and I can tell you that those who have tried it have lived to regret it.
We cannot and we will not let them do this to America.
Let us always be true to the principle that has made America the world's most prosperous nation--that here in America a person should get what he works for and work for what he gets.
Let me illustrate the difference in our philosophies. Because of our free economic system, what we have done is to build a great building of economic wealth and money in America. It is by far the tallest building in the world, and we are still adding to it. Now because some of the windows are broken, they say tear it down and start again. We say, replace the windows and keep building. That is the difference.
Let me turn now to a second area where my beliefs are totally different from those of our opponents.
Four years ago crime was rising all over America at an unprecedented rate. Even our Nation's Capital was called the crime capital of the world. I pledged to stop the rise in crime. In order to keep that pledge, I promised in the election campaign that I would appoint judges to the Federal courts, and particularly to the Supreme Court, who would recognize that the first civil right of every American is to be free from domestic violence.
I have kept that promise. I am proud of the appointments I have made to the courts, and particularly proud of those I have made to the Supreme Court of the United States. And I pledge again tonight, as I did 4 years ago, that whenever I have the opportunity to make more appointments to the courts, I shall continue to appoint judges who share my philosophy that we must strengthen the peace forces as against the criminal forces in the United States.
We have launched an all-out offensive against crime, against narcotics, against permissiveness in our country.
I want the peace officers across America to know that they have the total backing of their President in their fight against crime.
My fellow Americans, as we move toward peace abroad, I ask you to support our programs which will keep the peace at home.
Now, I turn to an issue of overriding importance not only to this election, but for generations to come--the progress we have made in building a new structure of peace in the world.
Peace is too important for partisanship. There have been five Presidents in my political lifetime--Franklin D. Roosevelt, Harry Truman, Dwight Eisenhower, John F. Kennedy, and Lyndon Johnson.
They had differences on some issues, but they were united in their belief that where the security of America or the peace of the world is involved we are not Republicans, we are not Democrats. We are Americans, first, last, and always.
These five Presidents were united in their total opposition to isolation for America and in their belief that the interests of the United States and the interests of world peace require that America be strong enough and intelligent enough to assume the responsibilities of leadership in the world.
They were united in the conviction that the United States should have a defense second to none in the world.
They were all men who hated war and were dedicated to peace.
But not one of these five men, and no President in our history, believed that America should ask an enemy for peace on terms that would betray our allies and destroy respect for the United States all over the world.
As your President, I pledge that I shall always uphold that proud bipartisan tradition. Standing in this Convention Hall 4 years ago, I pledged to seek an honorable end to the war in Vietnam. We have made great progress toward that end. We have brought over half a million men home, and more will be coming home. We have ended America's ground combat role. No draftees are being sent to Vietnam. We have reduced our casualties by 98 percent. We have gone the extra mile, in fact we have gone tens of thousands of miles trying to seek a negotiated settlement of the war. We have offered a cease-fire, a total withdrawal of all American forces, an exchange of all prisoners of war, internationally supervised free elections with the Communists participating in the elections and in the supervision.
There are three things, however, that we have not and that we will not offer.
We will never abandon our prisoners of war.
Second, we will not join our enemies in imposing a Communist government on our allies--the 17 million people of South Vietnam.
And we will never stain the honor of the United States of America.
Now I realize that many, particularly in this political year, wonder why we insist on an honorable peace in Vietnam. From a political standpoint they suggest that since I was not in office when over a half million American men were sent there, that I should end the war by agreeing to impose a Communist government on the people of South Vietnam and just blame the whole catastrophe on my predecessors.
This might be good politics, but it would be disastrous to the cause of peace in the world. If, at this time, we betray our allies, it will discourage our friends abroad and it will encourage our enemies to engage in aggression.
In areas like the Mideast, which are danger areas, small nations who rely on the friendship and support of the United States would be in deadly jeopardy.
To our friends and allies in Europe, Asia, the Mideast, and Latin America, I say the United States will continue its great bipartisan tradition--to stand by our friends and never to desert them.
Now in discussing Vietnam, I have noted that in this election year there has been a great deal of talk about providing amnesty for those few hundred Americans who chose to desert their country rather than to serve it in Vietnam. I think it is time that we put the emphasis where it belongs. The real heroes are 2 1/2 million young Americans who chose to serve their country rather than desert it. I say to you tonight, in these times when there is so much of a tendency to run down those who have served America in the past and who serve it today, let us give those who serve in our Armed Forces and those who have served in Vietnam the honor and the respect that they deserve and that they have earned.
Finally, in this connection, let one thing be clearly understood in this election campaign: The American people will not tolerate any attempt by our enemies to interfere in the cherished right of the American voter to make his own decision with regard to what is best for America without outside intervention.
Now it is understandable that Vietnam has been a major concern in foreign policy. But we have not allowed the war in Vietnam to paralyze our capacity to initiate historic new policies to construct a lasting and just peace in the world.
When the history of this period is written, I believe it will be recorded that our most significant contributions to peace resulted from our trips to Peking and to Moscow.
The dialogue that we have begun with the People's Republic of China has reduced the danger of war and has increased the chance for peaceful cooperation between two great peoples.
Within the space of 4 years in our relations with the Soviet Union, we have moved from confrontation to negotiation, and then to cooperation in the interest of peace.
We have taken the first step in limiting the nuclear arms race.
We have laid the foundation for further limitations on nuclear weapons and eventually of reducing the armaments in the nuclear area.
We can thereby not only reduce the enormous cost of arms for both our countries, but we can increase the chances for peace.
More than on any other single issue, I ask you, my fellow Americans, to give us the chance to continue these great initiatives that can contribute so much to the future of peace in the world.
It can truly be said that as a result of our initiatives, the danger of war is less today than it was; the chances for peace are greater.
But a note of warning needs to be sounded. We cannot be complacent. Our opponents have proposed massive cuts in our defense budget which would have the inevitable effect of making the United States the second strongest nation in the world.
For the United States unilaterally to reduce its strength with the naive hope that other nations would do likewise would increase the danger of war in the world.
It would completely remove any incentive of other nations to agree to a mutual limitation or reduction of arms.
The promising initiatives we have undertaken to limit arms would be destroyed.
The security of the United States and all the nations in the world who depend upon our friendship and support would be threatened.
Let's look at the record on defense expenditures. We have cut spending in our Administration. It now takes the lowest percentage of our national product in 20 years. We should not spend more on defense than we need. But we must never spend less than we need.
What we must understand is, spending what we need on defense will cost us money. Spending less than we need could cost us our lives or our freedom.
So tonight, my fellow Americans, I say, let us take risks for peace, but let us never risk the security of the United States of America.
It is for that reason that I pledge that we will continue to seek peace and the mutual reduction of arms. The United States, during this period, however, will always have a defense second to none.
There are those who believe that we can entrust the security of America to the good will of our adversaries.
Those who hold this view do not know the real world. We can negotiate limitation of arms, and we have done so. We can make agreements to reduce the danger of war, and we have done so.
But one unchangeable rule of international diplomacy that I have learned over many, many years is that, in negotiations between great powers, you can only get something if you have something to give in return.
That is why I say tonight: Let us always be sure that when the President of the United States goes to the conference table, he never has to negotiate from weakness.
There is no such thing as a retreat to peace.
My fellow Americans, we stand today on the threshold of one of the most exciting and challenging eras in the history of relations between nations.
We have the opportunity in our time to be the peacemakers of the world, because the world trusts and respects us and because the world knows that we shall only use our power to defend freedom, never to destroy it; to keep the peace, never to break it.
A strong America is not the enemy of peace; it is the guardian of peace.
The initiatives that we have begun can result in reducing the danger of arms, as well as the danger of war which hangs over the world today.
Even more important, it means that the enormous creative energies of the Russian people and the Chinese people and the American people and all the great peoples of the world can be turned away from production of war and turned toward production for peace.
In America it means that we can undertake programs for progress at home that will be just as exciting as the great initiatives we have undertaken in building a new structure of peace abroad.
My fellow Americans, the peace dividend that we hear so much about has too often been described solely in monetary terms--how much money we could take out of the arms budget and apply to our domestic needs. By far the biggest dividend, however, is that achieving our goal of a lasting peace in the world would reflect the deepest hopes and ideals of all of the American people.
Speaking on behalf of the American people, I was proud to be able to say in my television address to the Russian people in May: We covet no one else's territory. We seek no dominion over any other nation. We seek peace not only for ourselves, but for all the people of the world.
This dedication to idealism runs through America's history.
During the tragic War Between the States, Abraham Lincoln was asked whether God was on his side. He replied, "My concern is not whether God is on our side, but whether we are on God's side."
May that always be our prayer for America.
We hold the future of peace in the world and our own future in our hands. Let us reject therefore the policies of those who whine and whimper about our frustrations and call on us to turn inward
Let us not turn away from greatness.
The chance America now has to lead the way to a lasting peace in the world may never come again.
With faith in God and faith in ourselves and faith in our country, let us have the vision and the courage to seize the moment and meet the challenge before it slips away.
On your television screen last night, you saw the cemetery in Leningrad I visited on my trip to the Soviet Union--where 300,000 people died in the siege of that city during World War II.
At the cemetery I saw the picture of a 12-year-old girl. She was a beautiful child. Her name was Tanya.
I read her diary. It tells the terrible story of war. In the simple words of a child she wrote of the deaths of the members of her family. Zhenya in December. Grannie in January. Then Leka. Then Uncle Vasya. Then Uncle Lyosha. Then Mama in May. And finally--these were the last words in her diary: "All are dead. Only Tanya is left."
Let us think of Tanya and of the other Tanyas and their brothers and sisters everywhere in Russia, in China, in America, as we proudly meet our responsibilities for leadership in the world in a way worthy of a great people.
I ask you, my fellow Americans, to join our new majority not just in the cause of winning an election, but in achieving a hope that mankind has had since the beginning of civilization. Let us build a peace that our children and all the children of the world can enjoy for generations to come.

Gestapo
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Gestapo (abbreviation of Geheime Staatspolizei, "Secret State Police") was the official secret police of Nazi Germany and German-occupied Europe.
History
As part of the deal in which Adolf Hitler became Chancellor of Germany, Hermann Göring—future commander of the Luftwaffe and the number-two-man in the Nazi Party—was named Interior Minister of Prussia. This gave Göring command of the largest police force in Germany. Soon afterward, Göring detached the political and intelligence sections from the police and filled their ranks with Nazis. On 26 April 1933, Göring merged the two units as the Gestapo. He originally wanted to name it the Secret Police Office (German: Geheimes Polizeiamt), but discovered the German initials "GPA" looked and sounded too much like those of the Russian GPU.
Its first commander was Rudolf Diels, a protégé of Göring. Diels was best known as the primary interrogator of Marinus van der Lubbe after the Reichstag fire. In late 1933, the Reich Interior Minister Wilhelm Frick wanted to integrate all the police forces of the German states under his control. Göring outflanked him by removing the Prussian political and intelligence departments from the state interior ministry. Göring himself took over the Gestapo in 1934 and urged Hitler to extend the agency's authority throughout Germany. This represented a radical departure from German tradition, which held that law enforcement was (mostly) a Land (state) and local matter. In this, he ran into conflict with Heinrich Himmler, who was police chief of the second most powerful German state, Bavaria. Frick did not have the muscle to take on Göring by himself so he allied with Himmler. With Frick's support, Himmler (pushed on by his right-hand man, Reinhard Heydrich) took over the political police of state after state. Soon only Prussia was left.
Concerned that Diels was not ruthless enough to effectively counteract the power of the Sturmabteilung (SA), Göring handed over control of the Gestapo to Himmler on 20 April 1934. Also on that date, Hitler appointed Himmler chief of all German police outside Prussia. Heydrich, named chief of the Gestapo by Himmler on 22 April 1934, also continued as head of the SS Security Service (Sicherheitsdienst, SD).
On 17 June 1936, Hitler decreed the unification of all police forces in the Reich and named Himmler as Chief of German Police. This action effectively merged the police into the SS and removed it from Frick's control. Himmler was nominally subordinate to Frick as police chief, but as Reichsführer-SS, he answered only to Hitler. This move also gave Himmler operational control over Germany's entire detective force. The Gestapo became a national state agency rather than a Prussian state agency. Himmler also gained authority over all of Germany's uniformed law enforcement agencies, which were amalgamated into the new Ordnungspolizei (Orpo: Order Police), which became a national agency under SS general Kurt Daluege. Shortly thereafter, Himmler created the Kriminalpolizei (Kripo: Criminal Police), merging it with the Gestapo into the Sicherheitspolizei (SiPo: Security Police), under Heydrich's command. The SiPo was considered a complementary organization to the SD. Heinrich Müller was at that time the Gestapo operations chief. He answered to Heydrich; Heydrich answered only to Himmler and Himmler answered only to Hitler.
The Gestapo had the authority to investigate cases of treason, espionage, sabotage and criminal attacks on the Nazi Party and Germany. The basic Gestapo law passed by the government in 1936 gave the Gestapo carte blanche to operate without judicial review—in effect, putting it above the law. The Gestapo was specifically exempted from responsibility to administrative courts, where citizens normally could sue the state to conform to laws. As early as 1935, however, a Prussian administrative court had ruled that the Gestapo's actions were not subject to judicial review. The SS officer Werner Best, onetime head of legal affairs in the Gestapo, summed up this policy by saying, "As long as the police carries out the will of the leadership, it is acting legally."

LAFORGE: You know? I wish I had a picture of this.
COCHRANE: What?
LAFORGE: Oh well, you see, in the future this whole area becomes an historical monument. You're standing almost on the exact spot where your statue's gonna be.
COCHRANE: Statue?
LAFORGE: Yeah! It's marble, about twenty metres tall and you're looking up at the sky. Your hand sort of reaching to the future.
COCHRANE: I gotta to take a leak!
LAFORGE: Leak? I'm not detecting any leak.
COCHRANE: Don't you people from the twenty-fourth century ever pee?
LAFORGE: Oh, leak, I get it. ...That's pretty funny.

Senator Nixon’s Checkers Speech
Sep 23, 1952
Text of Senator Richard Nixon’s Checkers speech.
Well, that’s where we start when I go into politics. Now what I’ve I earned since I went into politics? Well, here it is—I jotted it down, let me read the notes. First of all I’ve had my salary as a Congressman and as a Senator. Second, I have received a total in this past six years of $1600 from estates which were in my law firm the time that I severed my connection with it.
And, incidentally, as I said before, I have not engaged in any legal practice and have not accepted any fees from business that came to the firm after I went into politics. I have made an average of approximately $1500 a year from nonpolitical speaking engagements and lectures. And then, fortunately, we’ve inherited a little money. Pat sold her interest in her father’s estate for $3,000 and I inherited $l500 from my grandfather.
We live rather modestly. For four years we lived in an apartment in Park Fairfax, in Alexandria, Va. The rent was $80 a month. And we saved for the time that we could buy a house.
Now, that was what we took in. What did we do with this money? What do we have today to show for it? This will surprise you, Because it is so little, I suppose, as standards generally go, of people in public life. First of all, we’ve got a house in Washington which cost $41,000 and on which we owe $20,000. We have a house in Whittier, California, which cost $13,000 and on which we owe $3000. * My folks are living there at the present time.
I have just $4,000 in life insurance, plus my G.I. policy which I’ve never been able to convert and which will run out in two years. I have no insurance whatever on Pat. I have no life insurance on our our youngsters, Patricia and Julie. I own a 1950 Oldsmobile car. We have our furniture. We have no stocks and bonds of any type. We have no interest of any kind, direct or indirect, in any business.
Now, that’s what we have. What do we owe? Well, in addition to the mortgage, the $20,000 mortgage on the house in Washington, the $10,000 one on the house in Whittier, I owe $4,500 to the Riggs Bank in Washington, D.C. with interest 4 1/2 per cent.
I owe $3,500 to my parents and the interest on that loan which I pay regularly, because it’s the part of the savings they made through the years they were working so hard, I pay regularly 4 per cent interest. And then I have a $500 loan which I have on my life insurance.
Well, that’s about it. That’s what we have and that’s what we owe. It isn’t very much but Pat and I have the satisfaction that every dime that we’ve got is honestly ours. I should say this—that Pat doesn’t have a mink coat. But she does have a respectable Republican cloth coat. And I always tell her that she’d look good in anything.

Rick gives outfits and accessories to the others.
Glenn: If bad ideas were an Olympic event, this would take the gold.
Morales: He's right. Just stop, okay? Take some time to think this through.
Rick: How much time? They already got through one set of doors, that glass won't hold forever.
Outside
The group goes outside and drags one of the Walkers they killed into the store.
Store
Rick grabs a fire axe and the group puts on trench coats so they don't get guts on their good clothes. Rick is prepared to start chopping, but he stops at the last moment. He gets down and searches the Walker. He pulls out a wallet.
Rick: Wayne Dunlap. Georgia license. Born in 1979. He had $28 in his pocket when he died…
And a picture of a pretty girl. "With love, from Rachel." He used to be like us… Worrying about bills or the rent or the Super Bowl. If I ever find my family, I'm gonna tell them about Wayne.
Glenn: One more thing… He was an organ donor.
After a moment of silence, Rick starts to hack away at the Walker. The guts really gross everyone out and they start to gag.
Morales: Madre de Dios!
Andrea: Oh.
Morales: Dios!
Glenn: Oh God.
Rick: Keep chopping.
Rick hands the axe to Morales. Glenn groans.
Glenn: I am so gonna hurl.
Rick: Later.
Morales hacks away.
Rick: Everybody got gloves? Don't get any on your skin or in your eyes.
They apply some guts on Rick and Glenn.
Glenn: Oh God! Oh jeez. Oh, this is bad. This is really bad.

(Laughter.)
