William J. Clinton

XLII President of the United States: 1993 - 2001

Remarks to the Business Council in Williamsburg, Virginia

October 13, 1995

Thank you very much. The last time I was with the Woolards we were in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, in the Grand Tetons. And this outfit would have been highly inappropriate there. I felt more at home, but I saw Ed tonight and I kind of—I'm jealous of the beautiful shirt. I want to know where you got it. [Laughter] I'm so glad to see all of you. I know some of our administration members have been here—Secretary Rubin, who feels right at home.

I still can't believe Bob Rubin is a Democrat. [Laughter] He told me not very long ago we were going to have to change the currency to avoid counterfeiting. And I said, "Well, all right." And he said, "But I want to start with $100 bills." [Laughter]

Jcc Leader Maps Plan For Clinton

October 13, 1995 By ALISON FREEHLING Daily Press

JAMES CITY (COUNTY) — Perry DePue has decided he won't have time to tell a joke. With just a few seconds to make an impression on the president of the United States, he needs to cut right to the chase.

He's going to set President Clinton straight.

``I'm going to remind the president that this is James City County he's in, not Williamsburg,'' says DePue, chairman of the James City Board of Supervisors. ``We're proud of our more famous neighbor, but we're too often overshadowed.''

After that, DePue says, he'll improvise. And he may give Clinton a tie stamped with the county seal, to ``help him remember the next time he shows up here to play golf at Kingsmill.''

DePue and Williamsburg Mayor Trist McConnell were selected by White House officials on Wednesday to greet Clinton when he arrives today at the Williamsburg-Jamestown Airport.

Clinton is scheduled to be in town for a few hours to speak to the Business Council, a group of about 100 chief executives from a broad range of American companies meeting this weekend at the Williamsburg Lodge.

``I'm not nervous,'' DePue says. ``I'm proud. I'm excited. I'm going to shine my shoes.''

What did make him nervous, he says, was keeping the secret that the president is coming. Two different White House officials told DePue to keep his mouth shut after he had given them his Social Security number and birthdate for a routine security screen on Wednesday.

``You feel this great sense of responsibility to keep these big secrets,'' he says. ``So, I was relieved to see all those secrets on the front page of Thursday's newspaper, and it wasn't me who had talked.''

McConnell still isn't talking. The mayor turned down a request for an interview about his upcoming meeting with the president, citing security concerns and saying only that he is ``honored from the city's point of view.''

DePue and McConnell will be at the airport - already swarming with Secret Service agents as of Thursday afternoon - well before 6:30 p.m., when Clinton's ``Marine One'' helicopter is scheduled to touch down. They will go through a security and protocol briefing then.

DePue is hoping to get clearance to bring his daughter, 18-year-old Marya, with him to greet Clinton.

``My wife was pretty calm about this whole thing, but my daughter was the one doing back flips,'' says DePue, who called Marya, a James Madison University freshman, Wednesday night.

DePue was with Marya the last time he shook Clinton's hand, during the 1992 presidential campaign. Marya had convinced her reluctant father to stake out the Williamsburg Lodge in the hopes of seeing the presidential hopeful.

``We were in this huge crowd, and he happened to come over to where we were standing,'' DePue says. ``But that was sort of just a touching thing. It certainly wasn't a very personal experience.''

Greeting prominent visitors is not new to DePue, who has been on the Board of Supervisors for 15 years. Before then, in 1979, he lunched at the White House with former President Jimmy Carter.

DePue, a Democrat, had been an active volunteer for the Carter campaign in 1976. He and several other volunteers were invited to the White House in 1979 to gear up for the 1980 re-election campaign.

But today marks the first time DePue has served as an official representative for the county, which he said is an entirely different feeling.

``I'm not going to be there because I'm Perry DePue, but because of the county,'' he says. ``I don't allow myself to think that I'm so important.''

So even though he hadn't settled on a suit as of Thursday night, DePue knows one thing for sure - around his neck will be his maroon, James City County tie.

MOTORCADE

Your best bet to catch a glimpse of President Clinton today is to watch for his motorcade on the roads between the Williamsburg-Jamestown Airport, at Marclay Road off Route 199, and the Williamsburg Lodge, off South England Street in the historic district. Clinton is scheduled to land around 6:30 p.m. and head straight for the lodge, where he will speak at about 7:15 p.m. The president will return to Washington later tonight. Williamsburg Police would not release details about any possible change in traffic patterns.

Camp Peary is an approximately 9,000 acre military reservation in York County near Williamsburg, Virginia. Officially referred to as an Armed Forces Experimental Training Activity (AFETA) under the auspices of the Department of Defense, Camp Peary is rumored to host a covert CIA training facility known as "The Farm," which is used to train officers of the National Clandestine Service, as well as those of the DIA's Defense Clandestine Service, among other intelligence entities.
