Patriots and Tyrants

Episode 7 Season 2

Beck: You're all free to go.

Eric: Wait a minute. That's it?

Beck: About 20 minutes ago, I notified my company commanders that I would no longer be taking orders from the Cheyenne leadership. I believe this government is corrupt at its core. Its actions are criminal. And I no longer recognize their right to lead.

Eric: So what happens now?

Beck: My company commanders are deliberating trying to decide whether to report me up the chain of command. In all likelihood, I'll be charged by the end of the day. Sent to Cheyenne to face a court martial for treason. But until then, I'm still in charge.

The American Presidency Project

Barack Obama

XLIV President of the United States: 2009 - present

Remarks to Military Personnel in Baghdad

April 7, 2009

The President. Thank you. Thank you, guys. Hooah!

Audience members. Hooah!

The President. Let me say, Multi-National Force--Iraq; Multi-National Corps--Iraq; Multi-National Security Transition Command--Iraq; First Corps; America's Corps Band: Thanks to all of you. Listen, I am so honored.

Audience member. We love you.

The President. I love you back. I am honored and grateful to be with all of you. And I'm not going to talk long because I want to shake as many hands as I can, and I've been talking all week. [Laughter] But there's a couple of things I want to say. Number one, thank you.

Audience member. You're welcome.

The President. You know, when I was at Camp Lejeune, I spoke about what it means for America to see our best and brightest, our finest young men and women serve us. And what I said then is something that I want to repeat to you, which is: You have performed brilliantly in every mission that has been given to you.

Audience members. Hooah!

The President. Under enormous strain and under enormous sacrifice, through controversy and difficulty and politics, you've kept your eyes focused on just doing your job. And because of that, every mission that's been assigned--from getting rid of Saddam, to reducing violence, to stabilizing the country, to facilitating elections--you have given Iraq the opportunity to stand on its own as a democratic country. That is an extraordinary achievement, and for that you have the thanks of the American people. That's point number one.

Point number two is, this is going to be a critical period, these next 18 months. I was just discussing this with your commander, but I think it's something that all of you know. It is time for us to transition to the Iraqis. They need to take responsibility for their country and for their sovereignty, and in order for them to do that, they have got to make political accommodations. They're going to have to decide that they want to resolve their differences through constitutional means and legal means. They are going to have to focus on providing government services that encourage confidence among their citizens.

All those things they have to do; we can't do it for them. But what we can do is make sure that we are a stalwart partner, that we are working alongside them, that we are committed to their success, that in terms of training their security forces, training their civilian forces in order to achieve a more effective government, they know that they have a steady partner with us.

And so just as we thank you for what you've already accomplished, I want to say thank you because you will be critical in terms of us being able to make sure that Iraq is stable, that it is not a safe haven for terrorists, that it is a good neighbor and a good ally, and we can start bringing our folks home. So now is not the time to lose focus. We have to be even more focused than we've been in order to achieve success.

The last point I want to make is, I know how hard it's been on a lot of you. You've been away from your families, many of you for multiple rotations. You've seen buddies of yours injured, and you remember those who have made the ultimate sacrifice.

Audience members. Hooah!

The President. There are probably some people here who have seen children born and have been missing watching them grow up. There are many of you who have listened to your spouse and the extraordinary sacrifices that they have to make when you're gone.

And so I want you to know that Michelle and myself are doing everything--[applause]--are doing everything we can to provide additional support for military families. The Federal budget that I have introduced increases support for military families. We are going to do everything required to make sure that the commitment we make to our veterans is met and that people don't have to fight for what they have earned as a consequence of their service.

The main point I want to make is, we have not forgotten what you have already done. We are grateful for what you will do. And as long as I am in the White House, you are going to get the support that you need and the thanks that you deserve from a grateful nation.

So thank you very much everybody. God bless you. God bless the United States of America.

Note: The President spoke at 6:08 p.m. in Al Faw Palace at Camp Victory.

My theories about such "memories" are they are details that I was taught after I developed amnesia or they are what I call "converted memories." The "converted memories" are details about my real identity that are converted to fit into the environment of my fake identity. I don't know which "memories" are fake and which are "converted." When I was processing the thoughts about still being wounded when I was on the Osirak strike, I remembered that scene from "Top Gun" of 1986 where the "Viper," character, which is also the code name for the F-16 Falcon, describes how "Maverick's" father was wounded, but saved three other pilots before he "bought it." The theory I have been pursuing, which isn't in "Raid On The Sun" is that the Iraqi's got some fighters in the air to intercept us, so I broke off from my formation of the 3 other F-16's and broke up the incoming Iraqi formation to draw them off my formation who didn't have enough fuel for a dog-fight. Similar to that dramatic scene from "Flight Of The Intruder" of 1991, I think I drew the Iraqi jets over Baghdad and into their own anti-aircraft fire, where the gunners on the ground thought a second strike was underway.

Airwolf Season 1 Episode 1

Shadow of the Hawke (1)

Aired Unknown Jan 22, 1984 on CBS

A top-secret division of the CIA known as 'The Firm' has built a hi-tech, weapons-laden new helicopter called 'Airwolf', but after the chopper's test flight, the craft's twisted creator, Dr. Moffet, turns the lethal firepower onto the flight tower, before taking off in the chopper with his two co-pilots to Libya. Archangel, the head of the division who built Airwolf, is badly wounded in the assault but not out of the game, and calls upon ace combat pilot Stringfellow Hawke to take the task of bringing back Airwolf from Libya, where Moffet is using it to destroy for his own sadistic pleasure.

Airwolf: Season 1, Episode 1

Shadow of the Hawke (22 Jan. 1984)

TV Episode

Jan-Michael Vincent ... Stringfellow Hawke

While demonstrating the capabilities of the new prototype supercopter codenamed 'Airwolf', Dr. Charles Moffet goes rogue, steals the chopper and kills almost all of the observers. At least one man -- Michael Coldsmith Briggs III survives. Briggs, codenamed 'Archangel' is the head of a covert organization called 'The Firm' and Archangel calls upon the one man in the world he knows that can retrieve the copter. The problem is Stringfellow Hawke is not only a loner, but a recluse as well. The amount of money the Firm is willing to pay for Airwolf's recovery is irrelevant. Hawke wants just one thing - the safe return of his brother, Saint John, who was captured during the Vietnam war and is evidently a POW.

XLIV President of the United States: 2009 - present

Exchange With Reporters in Baghdad, Iraq

April 7, 2009

The President's Visit to Iraq

Q. Sir, can you tell us what your primary purpose is in being here?

The President. To say thank you to the troops. They are doing extraordinary work. General Odierno has been helping to lead a very effective operation here. We want to be fully briefed, and nothing does that better than face-to-face meetings.

I'll have the opportunity to meet with Prime Minister Maliki and President Talabani while I'm here. Obviously, we've spent a lot of time trying to get Afghanistan right. But I think it's important for us to remember that there's still a lot of work to be done here. And in addition to thanking our troops, I also want to send a strong message to our diplomatic corps and our civilians that they're going to be critical to our success here.

We've made significant political progress. You've seen a greater willingness on the part of all the factions in Iraq to resolve their issues politically and through nonviolent means. But with the national elections coming up, many of the unresolved issues may be brought to a head. And it's very important for us to use all of our influence to encourage parties to resolve these issues in ways that are equitable and fair. And I think that my presence here can help do that.

Okay. Thank you, guys.

Not to mention, Chip [Chip Reid, CBS News], I thought you guys hadn't been on the road long enough. [Laughter] I know that you didn't feel like going home. We had underworked you, so I figured one more stop.

Meeting With Iraqi Leaders

Q. Did you say you're meeting with or talking to----

The President. I will be meeting with them face to face.

Q. Face to face?

Q. Will that be here, Mr. President?

The President. Yes, in the near vicinity.

Note: The President spoke at 5:24 p.m. in Al Faw Palace at Camp Victory. In his remarks, he referred to Gen. Raymond T. Odierno, USA, commanding general, Multi-National Forces--Iraq.

Barack Obama

XLIV President of the United States: 2009 - present

Remarks Following a Meeting With Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki of Iraq in Baghdad

April 7, 2009

President Obama. Well, thank you very much. I'm just going to make a short statement. I've just had very productive discussions with Prime Minister Maliki. I'm glad that I could come back to Iraq. It's important for me to speak directly to the Prime Minister, as well as other Iraqi leaders. And it's obviously a great honor to pay tribute to our troops, our diplomats, as well as Iraqis who have fought side by side with Americans.

I've arrived in Baghdad a day after--around the bombings that killed many innocent Iraqi civilians. And our hearts go out to the victims of this senseless violence, as well as their families. But I remain convinced that our shared resolve and commitment to progress is greater than the obstacles that stand in our way.

But we should not be distracted, because we have made enormous progress working alongside the Iraqi Government over the last few months. Overall, violence continues to be down. There's been movement on important political questions. But we have been reminded that there's more work to do.

I communicated to the Prime Minister that we are strongly committed to an Iraq that is sovereign and stable and self-reliant. And as Prime Minister Maliki was already aware, we have committed ourselves to a strategy that ensures a orderly, responsible transition from U.S. and coalition security forces to Iraqi security forces.

I've made it clear to my commanders that we need to be flexible but focused on training and equipping Iraqi security forces so that they can take the lead in dealing with security threats in their country. And the drawdown that will take place will, ultimately, result in the removal of all U.S. troops by 2011.

The second point of discussion was to indicate that we strongly support political steps to be taken to resolve differences between various factions within Iraq and to ensure a more peaceful and prosperous future.

Again, we've seen very good progress, but going forward, it's absolutely critical that all Iraqis are fully integrated into the Government and the security forces. We also want to work with the Prime Minister to deliver basic services to the Iraqi people, and I know that's something that he cares deeply about. And finally, we discussed how important it is to work together to deal with some of the regional issues that, ultimately, will be important to Iraq's security.

I just came from Turkey, for example, which I think has been working much more effectively and cooperatively in dealing with issues in northern Iraq. And we want to continue to foster good relations not just with Turkey, but with all of the countries in the region.

So as we carry out this strategy, we'll be working closely not only with the Prime Minister and his Government but also with President Talabani and all of the other key Government leaders. We'll do so in a spirit of partnership. The U.S. pursues no claims on Iraqis' territory and resources. We respect Iraqi sovereignty and the sacrifices that you have made for your country. And we seek a full transition to Iraqi responsibility for the security and prosperity of the nation.

The American people, through its troops, through civilians, have made enormous sacrifices here in Iraq. But they do so with the knowledge that they have stood alongside the Iraqi people in creating a more stable and prosperous country. And they are proud of the work that they've done, and I am proud and speak for them when I say that we want to continue to advance progress here in Iraq. And I look forward to the partnership with the Iraqi Government and the Iraqi people in making this happen.

Prime Minister Maliki. Thank you, Mr. Obama. I welcome you in Iraq, that you--that was a station after a very good trip for you. We discussed a lot of things regarding fixing a lot of the regional and international problems. The discussion with Mr. Obama included a lot of the bilateral issues that we insisted that he should continue to include all type of areas like scientific, social, et cetera. And we also committed to whatever had been achieved from democracy and the SOFA agreement.

We also talked about that dialog should be the only way to resolve any issue, whether it was between the Iraqi society components or in the region. We achieved a lot of things in Iraq now: the democratic process; we commit to our Constitution. We want to go forward to benefit the country in this direction.

We assured the President that all the progress that was made in the security area will continue so we will be able to continue our building effort, our progress in Iraq. Iraq that now is based on increased security and increased stability, look forward to international companies and to other countries to participate in investing in the country. The partnerships that were created and the agreements that were signed will be the base for the cooperation to improve our relationship.

I appreciate very much the call for dialog that President Obama mentioned, especially between East and West, between Islam and Christianity, and also work to solve the Palestinian issue that will help reduce violence in the area drastically. It will help in giving people their rights, also produce peace that we've been looking forward for a few years. We also thank President Obama for his willingness to help in the resolutions that were issued against Iraq in the previous period.

Thank you very much.

Note: The President spoke at 7:28 p.m. at Camp Victory.

Faysal II

Faysal II, in full Faysal ibn Ghazi ibn Faysal Al Hashim, Faysal also spelled Faisal or Feisal (born May 2, 1935, Baghdad, Iraq—died July 14, 1958, Baghdad), the last king of Iraq, who reigned from 1939 to 1958.

Faysal II, the grandson of Faysal I and great-grandson of Husayn ibn Ali, former sharif of Mecca and king of the Hejaz, became king of Iraq following the untimely death of his father, King Ghazi. Because Faysal was only four years old, his maternal uncle Abd al-Ilah became regent. In April 1941, when the nationalist prime minister Rashid Ali al-Gaylani briefly seized power from Abd al-Ilah, Faysal was smuggled out of the country by his mother, Queen Aliyah, and was educated at the Harrow School in England. After the queen’s death in 1950, Abd al-Ilah became Faysal’s sole guardian.

On May 2, 1953, having gained his majority, King Faysal II was enthroned in Baghdad. In November of that year, his cousin Hussein ibn Talal became king of Jordan. The two monarchs belonged to the 41st generation of the Hashimite family and were rivals for the leadership of the clan. The issue was decided on February 14, 1958, when Faysal became head of the Arab federation uniting Iraq and Jordan. Faysal’s rule in Iraq, however, was growing increasingly unstable. Although he sought to modernize the country—approving extensive projects on dams, bridges, and irrigation works, as well as the construction of schools and hospitals—the material progress failed to earn public support for the monarchy. In addition, Faysal was weakened by an escalating power struggle with Abd al-Ilah, who continued to exert control from behind the scenes. On July 14, 1958, General Abd al-Karim Qasim led a coup that overthrew the monarchy and established Iraq as a republic. Faysal was killed during the fighting.

The strategy complements important elements of the National Security Strategy, as well as our National Strategies for: Homeland Security, to Combat Weapons of Mass Destruction, to Secure Cyberspace, for the Physical Protection of Critical Infrastructure and Key Assets, and the National Drug Control Strategy. Together these efforts establish critical goals for strengthening America's security against the threats of the 21st century.

The United States' strategy for combating terrorism focuses on taking the fight to the terrorists themselves. We are using all elements of our national power and international influence to attack terror networks; reduce their ability to communicate and coordinate their plans; isolate them from potential allies and from each other; and identify and disrupt their plots before they attack. Our country works closely with every nation committed to this fight, and we will continue to help our allies and friends improve their ability to fight terror.

The war against global terror will be hard and long. Today, terror cells exist on nearly every continent and in dozens of countries, including our own. Victory will depend on the courage, strength, and fortitude of America's people and our partners around the world. It will be measured through the steady, patient work of dismantling terror networks and bringing terrorists to justice, oftentimes one by one. Our Nation is unalterably committed to protecting our citizens, routing terror wherever it exists, and building a safer, better world of greater opportunity and freedom for all peoples. We will not rest until we succeed.

Roger Meyers Jr.: So let's review. You two screwballs have just strolled in here fresh from the sewer and given me a bunch of bulldink about creating Itchy with no proof at all, and you expect me to give you… how much?

Chester: 800 billion dollars.

I think I am in love with Lily Jang. It seems crazy to even write that, with all things considered, but, well, what isn't crazy right now?

Galactica - Brig

Boomer: This guy's probably died and been reborn a dozen times. You may have faced him before.

Starbuck: So what, raiders reincarnate? Just like you?

Boomer: Yeah, just like me.

Starbuck: Great. What a frakkin' world.

Boomer: A raider's much like a trained animal, with the basic consciousness and survival instinct. But with the destruction of the resurrection ship, when they die, they're really dead. So, they're not gonna mount mass attacks where they could have major casualties.

Starbuck: Raiders reincarnate?

Boomer: Makes sense, doesn't it? It takes months for you to train a nugget into an effective viper pilot. And then they get killed. And their experience, their knowledge, their skill sets. They're all lost forever. So, if you could bring 'em back and put 'em in a brand new body, wouldn't you do it? 'Cause death then becomes a learning experience. How, uh-- how many pilots have we lost? I mean, have you lost?

Starbuck: You know, there are times when I look at you and I forget what you are. All I see is that kid that pooched her landings day after day. The kid that was frakkin' the chief and thinking she was getting away with it.

Boomer: Yeah, I remember. [Crying] You were like a big sister to--

Boomer reaches out to touch Starbuck on the leg. The marines promptly cock and raise their rifles to stop her.

Boomer: Kara, um-- be careful of Scar, okay? He's filled with rage.

Starbuck: About what?

Boomer: Dying's a painful and traumatic experience. Every time he's reborn, he's filled with more bitter memories. Scar hates you every bit as much as you hate him.

Eric: You were right.

Stanley: Right about what?

Eric: Constantino. There's something he lost that I don't wanna ever give up. I mean, we're right, Cheyenne is wrong but the moment we start killing American Soldiers, all that changes.

Emily: So, what do we do when they start shooting at us, huh?

Genius

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

A genius is a person who displays exceptional intellectual ability, creativity, or originality, typically to a degree that is associated with the achievement of an unprecedented leap of insight.

Psychology

Genius is expressed in a variety of forms (e.g., mathematical, literary, performance). Genius may show itself in early childhood, as a prodigy with particular gifts (e.g., understanding), or later in life. Geniuses are often deemed as such after demonstrating great originality. They tend to have strong intuitions about their domains, and they build on these insights with tremendous energy.

Philosophy

In the philosophy of Friedrich Nietzsche, genius is merely the context which leads us to consider someone a genius. In Twilight of the Idols, Nietzsche writes, "Great men, like great epochs, are explosive material in whom tremendous energy has been accumulated; their prerequisite has always been, historically and physiologically, that a protracted assembling, accumulating, economizing and preserving has preceded them – that there has been no explosion for a long time."

Sara smokes a real cigarette, taking a deep joyful drag. She sets the lighter on her palm. It floats about a foot in the air, spinning, then drops.

JOE
That’s pretty good.

In the city, young guys would hit on me by floating fucking quarters, I wouldn’t tell ‘em I was TK but I’d keep their quarters down.

Termination for Cause

Episode 5 Season 2

Hawkins: So based on this report, I'd say you were a former J&R employee, right? Looking to make sure the company's sins are exposed.

John Smith: Something like that.

Hawkins: So why not just blow the whistle? What do you need me for?

John Smith: I don't need you. I need your bomb. It's concrete evidence that cannot be refuted as easily as words on a page.
