History

AV-8B Harrier II V/STOL Aircraft

In 1998, the McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Harrier II was the only fixed-wing vertical/short takeoff and landing (V/STOL) aircraft in the free world. Its ability to take off vertically makes it one of the most maneuverable combat aircraft in service, and it can zoom out of the range of enemy fire extremely quickly.

Based on the 1957 British-designed Hawker-Siddley "Kestrel," the AV-8B Harrier II was developed by a team representing McDonnell Douglas, British Aerospace and Rolls-Royce. Production of the St. Louis, Mo.-built AV-8B began in 1981, and more than 340 Harrier IIs were produced. They carried more fuel than the AV-8As and had higher lift and better cruise characteristics.

In 1991, Harrier IIs were the first U.S. Marine Corps tactical aircraft to arrive for Operation Desert Storm over the Persian Gulf. During the 42 days of combat, 86 Harrier IIs flew 3,380 combat sorties

Marty McFly: Doc, I'm from the future. I came here in a time machine that you invented. Now, I need your help to get back to the year 1985.

Dr. Emmett Brown: My God! Do you know what this means? It means that this damn thing doesn't work at all!

Marty McFly: You got to help me. You are the only one who knows how your time machine works.

Dr. Emmett Brown: Time machine? I haven't invented any time machine.

Marty McFly: Okay. I'll prove it to you. Look at my driver's license. Expires 1987. Look at my birthday. I haven't even been born yet. And look at this picture. It's my brother, my sister and me. Look at her sweatshirt, Doc. "Class of 1984"?

Dr. Emmett Brown: Pretty mediocre photographic fakery. They cut off your brother's hair.

Marty McFly: I'm telling the truth. You got to believe me.

Dr. Emmett Brown: Then tell me, future boy... who's president of the United States in 1985?

Marty McFly: Ronald Reagan.

Dr. Emmett Brown: Ronald Reagan? The actor? Then who's vice president?

Quotes

Dr. Emmett Brown: Then who's vice president? Jerry Lewis?

[rushing out and down a hill toward his laboratory]

Dr. Emmett Brown: I suppose Jane Wyman is the First Lady!

Marty McFly: [following Doc] Whoa. Wait, Doc!

Dr. Emmett Brown: And Jack Benny is secretary of the treasury.

Marty McFly: [outside the lab door] Doc, you gotta listen to me.

Dr. Emmett Brown: [opens the door to the lab] I've had enough practical jokes for one evening. Good night, future boy!

[closes the door leaving Marty outside]

Marty McFly: No, wait, Doc. Doc. The-the-the bruise on your head, I know how that happened.

Quotes

Dr. Emmett Brown: [reads the "Save the Clock Tower" flyer and reacts with hope] This is it! This is the answer. It says here that a bolt of lightning is going to strike the clock tower at precisely 10:04 p.m. next Saturday night! If... If we could somehow harness this lightning... channel it into the flux capacitor... it just might work.
