The use of fighters to escort a single helicopter lifting off from Stendal was a pattern NATO air-control officers had noted before, but they'd never had the available units to do anything about it. This time it was different. An AWACS control aircraft over the Rhein watched the chopper lift off with three MiGs in attendance. The sector controller had a pair of F-4 Phantoms returning from a counter-air mission south of Berlin, and he vectored them north. The fighters skimmed the trees, their own radars off as they followed a safe-transit lane used by Russian aircraft.

Alekseyev and Sergetov sat alone in the back of the Mi-24 attack helicopter. There was room for eight combat-loaded infantrymen, so both had room to stretch and Sergetov took the chance for a nap. Their escorting MiGs were a thousand meters overhead, circling continuously as they watched for low-flying NATO fighters.

"Six miles," came the call from the AWACS.

One Phantom popped up, illuminated two MiGs with its radar, and loosed a pair of Sparrow missiles. The other fired two Sidewinders at the helicopter.

The MiGs were caught looking the wrong way when their threat receivers went off. One dashed to the ground and evaded. The other exploded in midair as the surviving wingman radioed a warning. Alekseyev blinked in surprise at the sudden gout of light overhead, then grabbed for his seatbelt as the helicopter turned hard left and dropped like a stone. It was almost in the trees when the Sidewinder chopped off the tail rotor. Sergetov awoke and shouted in surprise and alarm. The Mi-24 spun in the air as it crashed into the trees and bounced the last fifty feet to the ground. The main rotor came apart, sending pieces in all directions, and the sliding door on the left side of the aircraft popped off as though made of plastic. Alekseyev went out right behind it, dragging Sergetov with him. Once again his instincts had saved him. The two officers were twenty meters away when the fuel tanks exploded. They never heard or saw the Phantoms that continued west to safety.

"Are you hurt, Vanya?" the General asked.

'I didn't even piss my pants. That must mean I'm a seasoned veteran." The joke didn't work. The young man's voice shook along with his hands. "Where the hell are we?"

"An excellent question." Alekseyev looked around. He hoped to see lights, but the entire country had a blackout in force, and Soviet units had learned the hard way about using lights on the highways. "We have to find a road. We'll head south until we hit one."

"Where is south?"

"Opposite from north. That is north." The General pointed to a star, then turned to select another. "That one will lead us south."

Admiral Yuri Novikov monitored the progress of the battle from his underground headquarters a few kilometers from his main fleet base. He was stung by the loss of his principal long-range weapon-the Backfire bombers-but the way the Politburo had reacted to the missile attack was a greater shock. Somehow the politicians thought that it meant a ballistic-missile attack from the same area was possible, and no amount of argument to the contrary would change their minds. As if the Americans would risk their precious ballistic-missile subs in such restricted waters! the Admiral growled to himself. He was up against fast-attack boats-he was certain of it-and he was being forced to go after them with half his assets to prevent their escape. He didn't have that many assets to go around.

The doctor who saw me at the VA made a comment that I think is relevant when I told him that I hadn’t had a bowel movement in something like 6 weeks. He said that was impossible and I can’t remember exactly what he said but he said I would be bloated looking or something. That is what they were trying to do. They wanted to make me look pregnant. After the x-ray’s, he laughed and said that I was “full of shit.” The woman taking the x-ray’s was laughing too. All that doctor did was put me in more agony with the treatment he prescribed.

I wrote a while back about that time Mogge hit me with that tripod. He was carrying it around for his camera as we were sight-seeing during liberty when we were deployed to the Med. Maybe that represents him carrying a tripod for that Mark 19 grenade launcher, with me carrying the launcher. I have thought a lot about that over the past few hours. Some kind of sniper type of operation far behind enemy lines during the first Gulf War.

Am I being prompted to remember all this? Is that what this is about? Am I supposed to remember?

Baby steps!! That’s what a few people have said to me in the recent past.

My theories about such "memories" are they are details that I was taught after I developed amnesia or they are what I call "converted memories." The "converted memories" are details about my real identity that are converted to fit into the environment of my fake identity. I don't know which "memories" are fake and which are "converted." When I was processing the thoughts about still being wounded when I was on the Osirak strike, I remembered that scene from "Top Gun" of 1986 where the "Viper," character, which is also the code name for the F-16 Falcon, describes how "Maverick's" father was wounded, but saved three other pilots before he "bought it." The theory I have been pursuing, which isn't in "Raid On The Sun" is that the Iraqi's got some fighters in the air to intercept us, so I broke off from my formation of the 3 other F-16's and broke up the incoming Iraqi formation to draw them off my formation who didn't have enough fuel for a dog-fight. Similar to that dramatic scene from "Flight Of The Intruder" of 1991, I think I drew the Iraqi jets over Baghdad and into their own anti-aircraft fire, where the gunners on the ground thought a second strike was underway. I have been thinking that an artillery fragment blasted into my jet and almost cut off my hand, leaving a scar on my right wrist. The F-16 stick is on the right side so I had to fly by reaching my left hand across to use the flightstick. Somewhere along the way, I was low on fuel, so I landed in the desert and somehow got more fuel to take off again and land at the home base

June 8th must mean something to Thomas Ray, but I cannot remember what it is. I was writing, and still believe, that I did not make it back with the strike group on 6/7/81 and 6/8/81 was the day I made it back to the base. Or it was the day they determined where I was and launched a rescue effort, such as to fly in a helo to get me out or to bring me fuel to fly out from the desert. I keep thinking of that memory of me running out of gas in my red Ford when I was on my way into school one evening to supervise the construction of the class float for a parade. That was towards the end of my Junior year at Ashdown. I remember Jennifer Jones used to kid me about it for a while afterwards.

There was that scene in Mel Gibson’s “The Road Warrior,” I suddenly thought of this morning, where he had the autogyro pilot carrying those fuel cans for him across the desert. I started thinking about what I have been writing about my theory that I ran out of fuel in my F-16 after the Osirak strike and had to land somewhere and find fuel. I think that may also be represented by that “memory” I wrote about of my red 1967 Ford getting stuck in the mud and having to walk through the woods in the pitch black night to find help. I think that the scene in the movie represents a helicopter bringing fuel out to me.

In what I think were earlier scenes I seemed to be at a lake and that seems pleasant to think about but I cannot remember hardly any details. At another point I remember I was talking to someone and I remember that I specifically mentioned my wife.

This also reminds me of a dream I had a day or two ago. I was sitting at the controls of a helicopter and I was getting ready to pilot it into the air. I could clearly hear the blades chopping the air and I could vaguely see that I looked down at the controls next to the seat. I was annoyed by one of the controls and I thought several times after I awoke that I was flying a foreign helicopter but I was talking to someone else there in the front and to my left and I was comparing the capabilities of that foreign helicopter to the Seasprite helicopter the U.S. Navy flew for many years. Then I was operating the controls and I clearly felt in the dream when the helicopter began to rise into the air.

In the dream just now that I awoke from I seemed to be standing on the roof of the Vermont Inn-Apartments. The details I can still visualize of other buildings in the area are obviously wrong from that location on the roof but it is close. In the dream, I could see the Experience Music Project building but I don't think I knew it was the EMP in the dream and I don't think I could either see it from that perspective from that roof or that I could see it all from that roof and I cannot now remember if I could ever see it all because although it was close enough to see I think it was blocked from view by other buildings. I was standing there and I am aware there was another person, who seemed to leave after I made some comments, and I was watching two F-117 Nighthawk stealth attack jets and I was aware in the dream they were on some kind of test flight and that the jets were being tested for the early phase of development, which is inconsistent with a timeframe of today. I saw two missile exhausts as each jet fired one missile into the building, which in the dream seemed to be some kind of construction, as though it was old coliseum, that was being used for target practice because it was going to be torn down away. I heard some explosions and I think the stealth attack jets may have deployed more weapons than just those two missiles I saw fired into the building but I could not see anything else and I think that was because my view was blocked. I made some kind of comment about how those attack jets should be involved in more such activity as what I was watching and that is when the other person left the area I was standing in. After the jets seemed to depart the area, I saw a helicopter, of undiscernable type although it was close enough that I should have been able to identify, was flying from the east and was flying to the west along one side of my building and after it passed it must have made a sharp banking turn because when it started to travel from west to east it was on the other side of the building I was on but just as close as when it made the first pass down the building I was standing on. The helicopter was broadcast someone's voice comments from a loudspeaker and I was laughing moderately about those comments from the helicopter but I cannot remember what was being said over the loudspeaker to the residents in the area. Then I seemed to be on street level and I seemed to be in front of the building that had been fired on by the stealth attack jets but the building actually seemed to be the Macy's building in the Westlake area of downtown Seattle. I am vaguely aware of some high flames in the windows of the building at ground level but I am also aware that it did not seem that serious and I can also visualize to some degree that I could see the Seattle Fire Chief sitting in that building and at a table as though he was eating dinner. I was also looking for food and I wanted to get some take out I used to go to that was near the Vermont Inn-Apartments and I can see myself going there or starting to there but the scenery is wrong because I still seemed to be downtown at Westlake. I also eventually, as extended thought, decided to not go to that place for fried rice because I was certain they would tamper with the food as they had seemed to have been deliberately making the quality of the food worse and worse over time and I eventually stopped going there. Along with some cryptic remarks by one of the employees, which seemed to be timed with some guy who looked to be a stalker to me, I decided they were deliberately giving me bad food so I would stop going there. I was also thinking as I was standing there looking at the fire in the Macy's building that all those people I could see were going to blame me for all that and I guess I was thinking about how I needed to be on guard. I saw one person I recognized in the loose crowd but I don't remember who it was. There is also the lingering sense that I was being subtly steered away from that person, which is odd because I am not certain why I wonder about that part because I don't think I was going after him. But as I write this I am thinking about a series of thoughts recently about how my precognitive abilities may drive me into trouble situations because I can sense that someone is setting a trap or ambush for me and it is my job to stop aggression so I play along with the aggressors and I meet their aggression by facing them. After that part of the dream I seemed to be in a building and I can visualize a lot of detail but not enough to articulate. I am aware of a young boy that was there and I am also aware that he answered the telephone for me and it was my father who was calling and he wanted me to meet him somewhere at 9 p.m. which seemed to be only a few minutes away in the dream. I also visualized some other details that seemed to be on a monitor screen in front of me but I cannot remember those details. I think that was the part where I woke up. There might have been some other details about the telephone call but I cannot now remember more details.

Waking just now from a nap I cannot remember if my line of thought was when I was asleep or when I was trying fitfully and unsuccessfully because my legs ache to fall back to sleep. I was thinking, at some point, about the aircraft crash on 6/27/1994 that I survived. I was thinking that just before the crash I was teleported from my seat as the pilot to a point just a few feet above the ocean so that my body physically splashed into the ocean. I was thinking a several minutes ago that I created a similar scene in the 9/16/1994 "Timecop" for just that reason. I was also thinking that I had said something to the copilot and then to Kerry Burgess and I was looking back at him to see if he also disappeared along with me but if he did then I didn't see that happen. So I was floating near the ocean and a helicopter pulled me out and there was later speculation about how lucky I was that I was thrown through the windshield of the cockpit because of the impact of the aircraft on the ocean and that was how I survived. I was also thinking several minutes ago that I could see the teleportation device approaching me as the aircraft plummeted to the ocean. For the longest time I have felt a strong sense to avoid thinking of that teleportation device for the specific reason that my mind is being scanned telepathically and I was not supposed to be aware of that teleportation device because someone, who ever that is, did not want those other "scanners" to know about the teleportation device. So now I am left wondering about why that has changed.

Back in the year 2003 I wrote a letter on my computer at home and I printed it out on to paper and I put that letter in a stamped envelope for the postal service and I sent that letter through the United States Postal Service. I had the envelope of the letter addressed specifically to the Chief of Operations United States Navy and I referenced a special projects branch I had found on the internet.

I wrote about a computer program I created for the guided missile computer complex system that would transfer memory from one of the computers to the other when we were in the Persian Gulf in 1988. We had two identical systems in place. They were twins you could say. The transfer of code was problematic and the solution was not obvious.

I mailed the letter to the Chief of Operations United States Navy and told them I should have received the Silver Star.

[The helicopter skims over the surface. The drone piles into the snow. The helicopter itself lands on a flat surface.]

[They watch and wait. A few seconds later, the drone bursts out of the snowbank, still at high speed, and heading straight for the helicopter.]

[The pair scramble out of the helicopter. Sheppard takes a belly-flop into the snow. The drone powers down and slides to a stop mere inches away from O'Neill.]

[Beckett opens his eyes.]

BECKETT

INT—HELICOPTER

[Sheppard and O'Neill warily reenter their helicopter.]

I’m guessing I didn’t have anymore Sea Service time, which reflects, as I recall, the time a Sailor is assigned to a ship of the fleet, because I was assigned to a SEAL team from the time I returned in 1987 to 1990. I guess further my Sea Service, although interspersed with temporary duty assignments such as shuttle missions, resumed when I was assigned to the Arleigh Burke in 1991. My DD-214 doesn’t reflect that because, first of all, it is about Kerry Burgess, but also because it only reflects the period ending 5/14/90. I may have still flown as a fighter and bomber pilot after 1987, but I don’t think that was ever my primary role again after returning. I am not sure what to think about the thoughts I have had about flying the Apache gunship. Maybe that is something else I did occasionally. There is also the flying I would have done with the Ten-Eleven commercial airliner and I wonder if I flew its predecessor aircraft in that program, the B-52.

Something about flying the Apache attack helicopter?

There was something very detailed in my dream but something just flashed into my mind for a fraction of a second and I could not keep it long enough to focus on it.

Today I have signed into law H.R. 1696, a bill to expedite the construction of the World War II memorial [ RACKETEER INFLUENCED AND CORRUPT ORGANIZATIONS US Title 18 ] in the District of Columbia. It is indeed fitting that this measure becomes law on Memorial Day.

This legislation will allow the Nation to express the appreciation due the World War II generation for their selfless sacrifices that preserved the freedoms we all enjoy. I commend the Congress for a truly bipartisan effort to expedite construction of the memorial.

Now that debate over the site and basic design is concluded, the time has come for all concerned with the creation of the memorial to act with the same determination and sense of common purpose so wonderfully displayed by those we honor. We must get the job done, so that those who served are able to see the Nation's permanent expression of remembrance and thanks.

MAGAZINE DESCRIBES STOCK DEAL BY BUSH'S SON

WASHINGTON - President Bush's eldest son sold $848,560 of his stock in a Texas company just before the share prices began to plunge because of poor earnings reports, according to U.S. News and World Report.

The magazine reports in this week's issue that at the time of the sale last June 22, George W. Bush was a member of a committee formed by the Dallas-based Harken Energy Co. to study likely effects of corporate restructuring.

The magazine says Bush's stake in Harken, and his insider role, stemmed from Harken's takeover of another oil company that Bush helped found.

The magazine said Bush, as a member of a committee looking into a restructuring of Harken, had "detailed knowledge of the financial pressure Harken was under and of the demands being placed on the company by its creditors."

A week after Bush sold a large portion of his stock - he still owns 105,012 shares worth $400,000 - Harken reported a quarterly loss of $21 million.

Norris completed an unprecedented ground rescue of 2 downed pilots deep within heavily controlled enemy territory in Quang Tri Province. Lt. Norris, on the night of 10 April, led a 5-man patrol through 2,000 meters of heavily controlled enemy territory, located 1 of the downed pilots at daybreak, and returned to the Forward Operating Base (FOB). On 11 April, after a devastating mortar and rocket attack on the small FOB, Lt. Norris led a 3-man team on 2 unsuccessful rescue attempts for the second pilot. On the afternoon of the 12th, a forward air controller located the pilot and notified Lt. Norris. Dressed in fishermen disguises and using a sampan, Lt. Norris and 1 Vietnamese traveled throughout that night and found the injured pilot at dawn. Covering the pilot with bamboo and vegetation, they began the return journey, successfully evading a North Vietnamese patrol. Approaching the FOB, they came under heavy machinegun fire. Lt. Norris called in an air strike which provided suppression fire and a smoke screen, allowing the rescue party to reach the FOB. By his outstanding display of decisive leadership, undaunted courage, and selfless dedication in the face of extreme danger, Lt. Norris enhanced the finest traditions of the U.S. Naval Service.

Dr. Norman Vincent Peale (May 31, 1898 – December 24, 1993) was a minister and author (most notably of The Power of Positive Thinking) and a progenitor of the theory of "positive thinking".


Biography


Later life

Peale was politically and personally close to President Richard Nixon's family. In 1968 he officiated at the wedding of Julie Nixon and David Eisenhower. He continued calling at the White House throughout the Watergate crisis, saying "Christ didn't shy away from people in trouble."


Criticism and controversy

Peale's works came under criticism from several mental health experts, one of whom directly said Peale was a con man and a fraud. These critics appeared in the early 1950s after the publication of The Power of Positive Thinking.

Hard to substantiate

One major criticism of The Power of Positive Thinking is that the book is full of anecdotes that are hard to substantiate. Almost all of the experts and many of the testimonials that Peale quotes as supporting his philosophy are unnamed, unknown and unsourced. Examples include a "famous psychologist", a two-page letter from a "practicing physician", another "famous psychologist", a "prominent citizen of New York City", and dozens, if not hundreds, more unverifiable quotations. Similar scientific studies of questionable validity are also cited. As psychiatrist R. C. Murphy exclaimed, "All this advertising is vindicated as it were, by a strict cleaving to the side of part truth," and referred to the work and the quoted material as "implausible and woodenly pious."

Concealed hypnosis

A second major accusation of Peale is that he attempted to conceal that his techniques are a well known form of hypnosis, and to that he attempts to persuade his readers to follow his beliefs through a combination of self-hypnosis and false evidence. While his techniques are not debated by psychologists, Dr. Peale said his theological practice and strategy was directed more at self-analysis, forgiveness, character development, and growth much like the Jesuits of the Catholic Church.

Peale asserts that practicing his techniques will give the reader absolute self-confidence and deliverance from suffering. The critics assert that the techniques are a well known form of hypnosis (autosuggestion), disguised by the use of terms which may sound more benign from the reader's point of view ("techniques", "formulas," "methods," "prayers," and "prescriptions."). One author called Peale's book "The Bible of American autohypnotism."

Psychiatrist R. C. Murphy writes "Self knowledge, in Mr. Peale's understanding is unequivocally bad: self hypnosis is good." Murphy adds that repeated hypnosis defeats an individual's self-motivation, self-knowledge, unique sense of self, sense of reality, and ability to think critically. Murphy describes Peale's understanding of the mind as inaccurate, "without depth," and his description of the workings of the mind and the unconscious as deceptively simplistic and false: "It is the very shallowness of his concept of 'person' that makes his rules appear easy ... If the unconscious of man ... can be conceptualized as a container for a small number of psychic fragments, then ideas like 'mind-drainage' follow. So does the reliance on self-hypnosis, which is the cornerstone of Mr. Peale's philosophy.'"

Psychologist Albert Ellis, the founder of cognitive therapy and influential psychologist of the 20th century, compared the Peale techniques with those of the hypnotist Emile Coue, and Ellis says that the repeated use of these hypnotic techniques could lead to significant mental health problems. Ellis has documented in several books the many individuals he has treated who suffered mental breakdowns from following Peale's teachings. Ellis' writings repeatedly warn the public not to follow the Peale message. Ellis contends the Peale approach is dangerous, distorted, unrealistic. He compares the black or white view of life that Peale teaches to a psychological disorder (borderline personality disorder), perhaps implying that dangerous mental habits which he sees in the disorder may be brought on by following the teaching. "In the long run [Peale's teachings] lead to failure and disillusionment, and not only boomerang back against people, but often prejudice them against effective therapy."
