The current of director of national intelligence (DNI), James Clapper, who issued a stinging attack on the intelligence leaks this weekend, is a former Booz Allen executive. The firm's current vice-chairman, Mike McConnell, was DNI under the George W Bush administration. He worked for the Virginia-based company before taking the job, and returned to the firm after leaving it.

Sid: The painter.
Beth: He's really going to do it?
Carol: He says yes. We have to talk.
Sid: About the crime?
Carol: There's no crime.
Sid: Nick's going to steal a TV?
Carol: That's just an expression.
Sid: I've never heard that expression.
Carol: It's making the rounds. College students use it.
Sid: Where's he stealing it from?
Beth: His Mall.
Carol: [ to Beth: ] You want him to know?
Beth: He knows, he doesn't care. [ to Sid: ] Do you care?
Sid: I'm interested. Crime's interesting.
Beth: It's not a crime.

Sid: How?
Beth: They fired him.
Sid: He's got motive.

Marine Proves his Loyalty to Country and Corps
FEATURES, MARINES UNCOVERED // May 22nd, 2013 // By Cpl. Chelsea Flowers Anderson
As an Asian American during the Korean War, 1st Lt. Kurt C. Lee had the added weight of proving his loyalty to his men and to his country. His heroic actions while leading a machine gunner company with 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment led to Lee being awarded the Navy Cross and Silver Star. (Photo courtesy of Smithsonian Channel)
The start of the Korean War in 1950 wasn’t an easy time to be an Asian American. Many failed to make a distinction between the enemy in the current conflict and their fellow countrymen — Asian Americans.
For 1st Lt. Kurt C. Lee, the first Asian American to be commissioned as a regular Marine officer, this stark reality had an enormous impact. Lee had recently been put in command of a machine gunner company with 1st Battalion, 7th Marine Regiment, which was headed to Korea. In order to obtain the trust and confidence of the troops beneath him, Lee knew he needed to prove himself.
“Certainly, I was never afraid,” Lee said in an interview with reporter Michael Robison in 2011. “Perhaps the Chinese are all fatalists. I never expected to survive the war. So I was adamant that my death be honorable — be spectacular.”
Lee’s opportunity to show his commitment to his men and country came on the night of Nov. 2, when a numerically superior Chinese force attacked his unit.
Just around midnight, the enemy overran the left flank of the Marines’ defensive position. According to Lee’s Navy Cross citation, he immediately exposed himself to enemy fire while performing a one-man reconnaissance mission to re-deploy his machine gun positions.
Lee then reorganized his men and, while they provided supporting fire, he advanced up the slope to draw enemy fire, thereby exposing the enemy position in the dark.
At one point, Lee advanced all the way up to the enemy position by identifying himself as Chinese in Mandarin. He then hurled an assault on the position with grenades and supporting fire. His attack threw the enemy into a confused retreat.
Although wounded in the assault, Lee inspired his men to continue to fight and route the enemy forces. For his brave actions, he was later awarded the Navy Cross and earned the respect and loyalty of his men.
Throughout the remainder of the Korean War, Lee proved his tenacity time and again. Although wounded by sniper fire, Lee returned against doctor’s orders to lead from the front five days later. He received the Silver Star for heroically leading his Marines in a night march through frozen mountain ridges to reinforce an isolated Marine unit and for continually exposing himself to enemy fire during numerous firefights. Lee’s valor and initiative was influential in the Marines’ success and he continued to inspire his men even after he was removed from the fight due to injuries from a burst of enemy machine gun fire Dec. 8.
Lee went on to serve at The Basic School at Marine Corps Base Quantico, Va., and valiantly led Marines once again during the Vietnam War. He retired after 22 years of faithful service.
Throughout his service, Lee proved he was willing to sacrifice it all for the sake of his men and the country he called home. The legacy he left reflects great honor on the Marine Corps and serves as an inspiration for future and current Marines.

From: Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Manpower and Reserve Affairs)
Subj: NAVY AND MARINE CORPS AWARDS MANUAL
1. Purpose. To provide guidance and regulations concerning awards available for recognizing individuals and units in the Naval Service.
2. Navy Cross
a. Authorization. 10 U.S.C. S6242.
b. Eligibility Requirements
(1) Awarded to individuals who, while serving in any capacity with the Navy or Marine Corps, distinguish themselves by extraordinary heroism, not justifying the award of the Medal of Honor.
(a) While engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States;
(b) While engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force; or
(c) While serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in an armed conflict against an opposing armed force, in which the United States is not a belligerent party.
(2) To warrant this distinctive decoration, the act or execution of duty must be performed in the presence of great danger, or at great personal risk, and must be performed in such a manner as to set individuals apart from their shipmates or fellow Marines. An accumulation of minor acts of heroism normally does not justify the award. The high standards SECNAVINST 1650.1H demanded must be borne in mind when recommending the award.

HISTORY
THIS DAY IN HISTORY
Jul 29, 1958:
NASA created
On this day in 1958, the U.S. Congress passes legislation establishing the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), a civilian agency responsible for coordinating America's activities in space. NASA has since sponsored space expeditions, both human and mechanical, that have yielded vital information about the solar system and universe. It has also launched numerous earth-orbiting satellites that have been instrumental in everything from weather forecasting to navigation to global communications.
NASA was created in response to the Soviet Union's October 4, 1957 launch of its first satellite, Sputnik I. The 183-pound, basketball-sized satellite orbited the earth in 98 minutes. The Sputnik launch caught Americans by surprise and sparked fears that the Soviets might also be capable of sending missiles with nuclear weapons from Europe to America. The United States prided itself on being at the forefront of technology, and, embarrassed, immediately began developing a response, signaling the start of the U.S.-Soviet space race.

BOEING
V-22 Osprey Tiltrotor
The V-22 Osprey was the first aircraft designed from the ground up to meet the needs of all four U.S. Armed services. In partnership with Bell Helicopter Textron, Boeing Helicopters built the revolutionary new tiltrotor aircraft that takes off and lands vertically like a helicopter.
Once airborne, its blades can be rotated to convert the aircraft to a turboprop airplane capable of high-speed, high-altitude flight. Boeing was assigned responsibility for the fuselage, all subsystems, digital avionics and fly-by-wire flight-control systems.
The 30-ton aircraft can transport assault troops and cargo, undertake combat search and rescue and fleet logistic support, and provide long-range transportation for special operations.
By 1997, requirements called for production of 523 Ospreys, with the first to enter service during 1999. The first V-22 built to production standards made its first flight in February 1997 and was delivered March 15, 1997, to the V-22 Integrated Test Team at the Patuxent River Naval Air Warfare Center in Maryland. Eleven were produced by the end of 2000.
After the crash of a V-22 on Dec. 11, 2000, the aircraft did not return to flight until May 29, 2002. Five were flying by the end of 2002. The first passenger to fly aboard a V-22 after it returned to flight was Lt. Gen. Michael W. Hagee, incoming commandant of the Marine Corps, who in January 2003 flew in the cockpit of MV-22 Osprey aircraft No. 21 at Naval Air Station, Patuxent River, Md. The flight lasted about 15 minutes.

CLEMSON
A Brief History of Clemson University
by Andrew C. Land
That Clemson University is today the institution of higher learning that we know and love, and that it has experienced great growth in size and scope over the 118 years of its existence is due to the vision of its founder, Thomas Green Clemson.
Mr. Clemson died on April 6, 1888. Following a trying battle in the legislature, the act accepting the provisions of his will was signed by Governor John P. Richardson on November 27, 1889. The Clemson Agricultural College of South Carolina was thus created, and it was designated as a South Carolina Land Grant institution a short time later.
The first class, composed of 446 cadets (Clemson was until 1955 a military school), entered in June 1893 and graduated in 1896. They were taught by fifteen faculty members, and their curriculum, which focused on mechanical arts, agriculture, and military tactics, was rigorous. Enrollment grew steadily in the subsequent years, and eventually reached levels near those of today in the 1970s.
The University has awarded more than 50,000 degrees, has had fourteen presidents, and has committed itself to the tripartite mission of teaching, research, and public service in its 118 years.
But that's still not it. At least now, though, I have a better understanding for why I cannot consciously recall facts in the conventional manner. All that information is still locked away in my mind, accessible if I had the security drug, Henry. "Regarding Henry."
I just keeping thinking, I started thinking a while back specifically, that I had some kind of employment arrangement with Clemson University that is not part of the public knowledge. I don't think I was a professor there. I deliberately sought out employment with them as something along the lines of accounting, in that I provided investment advice or I was the chairman of that organization, the dean of the university or something. I just cannot recall specifically what it is I am trying to remember, if anything. There is a reason I have working memory of Clemson though. And I didn't have to have working memories of living there in that town Central in South Carolina which is basically a suburb of that small town that is Clemson South Carolina. I was there because Thomas Reagan and his association with Princeton University in the 1960s. None of you knew about that either until I told you about it.
And, see, when I saw that movie "Wonder Boys" when it premiered in the theatres in the year 2000 that scene of him wearing the bath robe made me think specifically of Tracie. And I never would have gone to see that movie by myself. A friend at work suggested it, just the same way she suggested we go to see "Black Hawk Down," which I also am doubtful I would have gone to see in the theatre if not for her suggestion. As for "Wonder Boys," I thought it was great. I have the DVD for it and I have watched it at least once and I still think it's funny. I never would have seen that if that co-worker at Microsoft had not suggested it, same probably with the 2000 film "The Patriot." She suggested that one also and I am not certain I would have gone to see it in the theatre. I have the DVD for that one also but I think it is stupid. There are some parts that are interesting such as the early scene where the kid sits up in the corn field as the horse rider plods along towards their house to deliver the mail.

In the context of my artificial and symbolic memory, I can "remember" Tracie Rhodes wanting me to ask her father, Joseph, for permission to marry her. Tracie's birthday, in the context of my artificial and symbolic memory, was July 16th. We met when she started working at the First Federal bank in Greenville, although she worked at the branches in Clemson, South Carolina, which is home to the Clemson Tigers. I lived nearby in Central, South Carolina, off Issaqueena Trail, before I moved to Country Club Estates in Greer, South Carolina.

I moved out to Central, SC, even though that was a long drive into the office in Greenville, but I was close to where Tracie lived with her parents and I got to see her everyday from then on. I was living there at Hunter's Glen off Issaqueena Trail.
I called Thedia and she wondered where I had been for a long time as I had not talked to any of them.

Tiger's professor.
My (surrogate) mother told me one time that Tracie had called her on the telephone a short while after Tracie and I divorced.
Tracie told her she was working at that hotel, the University Inn.
I could not remember the name, and it still doesn't ring a bell, but the location is clear in my mind. I used to drive by there a lot when I drove from Greenville to Clemson and Seneca. I also used to live near there when I lived in an apartment on Issaqueena Trail in Central, a small town in western South Carolina that is next to Clemson South Carolina.
The Tigers. University Inn.
She called me sometime later. I remember I was living in an apartment on Dresden in Charlotte North Carolina. She told me she was back working at that First Federal bank we used to work at. She told me she was a bank teller then. That was 1995 or early 1996. I told her I was working as a contract employee at Microsoft in Charlotte. She told me during our telephone conversation that even she had heard of Microsoft before.

there was an image of a tiger on the blanket. I have thought often of that blanket over the past few years. The last time, in my artificial memories that I “remembered” seeing it was when I was sitting in the back of my white Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo one night and the drive-in theatre near Charlotte, NC. I used to like to go there by myself and they always presented 3 first-run movies each night on the weekends. As all the vehicles I drove in my artificial memories are symbolic, I believe that Grand Cherokee represented the Space Shuttle. So anyway, later that night, as Bobbilynn was leaving my Wexford apartment, we were standing at her car, a Geo Storm
These are all symbolic memories and the true meaning is very interesting to ponder. It is an exercise in philosophy or poetry in a lot of ways. You read it and you understand what you are.

As I look closer at the numbers with today I think of how what I saw in the dream was that aqua-colored Saturn automobile Bobbilynn was driving during the time we went out a few times. I remember one time she was over at my apartment under a blanket with a tiger on it and that was because, as we watched "RoboCop 2" on VHS, the heat pump in my apartment had quit working at the temperature outside during was about 20 degrees Fahrenheit.

How you holding up there, tiger?
Sorry. When my parents were getting divorced, I got a lot of "tigers. "
I got a lot of "champs," "chiefs," "sports. ".
I even got a "governor. "
This is it, isn't it? This is what my life will be like.
My mom there, my dad there.
Thanksgiving, Christmas.-
She gets the house, he's in a condo my sister will decorate with wicker.
How did you get through this?
I relied on a carefully regimented program. . .
. . .of denial. . .
. . .and wetting the bed.
You know, I just-- It's so weird.
I mean, I was in there just listening to them bitch about each other.
All I kept thinking about was the Fourth of July.
Because it reminded you of the way. . .
. . .our forefathers used to bitch at each other?
It's just this thing. Every year we would. . .
. . .go out on my dad's boat and watch the fireworks.
Mom always hated it because the ocean air made her hair all big.
My sister Jill would be throwing up over the side. . .
. . .and Dad would be upset because nobody helped.
And when we did help, he'd scream at us for doing it wrong.
But then when the fireworks started, everybody just shut up.
You know, and it'd get really cold.
And we'd all just sort of smoosh under this one blanket.

Remarks Announcing the Nominations of Dr. Elias Zerhouni To Be Director of the National Institutes of Health and Dr. Richard Carmona To Be Surgeon General
March 26, 2002
Well, thank you, Tommy, very much, and welcome to the White House for this historic announcement. I appreciate your leadership, Tommy, in leading this administration's strong efforts to improve our Nation's health care, to make sure that more Americans get affordable health care, better patient protections, that the system puts our patients first, the system understands the importance of our docs, and we value that relationship, patient and doctor.
I also want to assure our fellow Americans that we're going to make and are making an unprecedented commitment to medical research. And we're improving our public health system to make sure that we can respond quickly to any biological threat that our country may face. We're putting sound health care policies in place and, as importantly, putting a quality team in place. And that's what we're here to discuss today.
It's my honor to nominate two fine men to head important Government institutions, to take important jobs. My nominee to lead the National Institute of Health is Elias Zerhouni, and my nominee as the next Surgeon General is Richard Carmona. These are distinguished physicians who have worked tirelessly to save lives and to improve lives. They bring exceptional knowledge and skill to these critical jobs. And they are absolutely dedicated to improving the health and well-being of all Americans.
It is my honor to welcome their families here as well. Thank you all for coming, Nadia Zerhouni and her children, and Diane Carmona and her children. We welcome you all, and we're glad you're here. I want to thank the Acting NIH Director, Ruth Kirschstein, for being here as well. Where are you, Ruth? There you are. Thank you so much, Ruth, for a fine job. I appreciate the Acting Surgeon General. Ken, where are you? Ken, thank you for being here, and thank you for your fine job as well.
I want to thank the former NIH Director, Harold Varmus, for being here. Antonia Novello is here. Thank you, Antonia. I remember you. [Laughter] She was a former Surgeon General under "41." [Laughter] And I'm so pleased that former House Minority Leader Bob Michel, former Senator Dennis DeConcini of Arizona, former Congressman John Porter, as well, from Illinois, is here. Thank you all for coming. We're honored you're here. And I also want to thank the Ambassador from Algeria for being here as well. Thank you all for coming.
The National Institutes of Health is entering a new era of medical promise. NIH researchers recently cracked the genetic code, an amazing achievement with enormous potential benefits. New diagnostic tools are alerting patients when they have an elevated risk of certain diseases, so they can take an active role in preventing them. New treatment therapies will be tailor-made for an individual's genetic makeup. And many medical treatments will become less invasive. American medicine is on the verge of dramatic progress against AIDS, against diabetes, and against heart disease. We're closing in on cancer's cause and cancer's cure.
The anthrax attacks against American citizens also demonstrated the need to strengthen our defenses against bioterrorism. Medical research will improve our ability to identify and respond and treat infectious diseases, whether they occur naturally or are used as terrorist weapons. The NIH has taken a leading role in this important front on the war against terror. The work of the National Institutes of Health have never been more promising and never been more important.
Leading the NIH is a great responsibility, and I have picked the right man to do so. Dr. Zerhouni and his wife immigrated to America from Algeria with $300 in their pocket, but a dream of opportunity. Today, he is the executive vice dean of the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine, the chairman of the department of radiology and radiological science at Johns Hopkins, and a professor of radiology and biomedical engineering. He is an expert in biomedical research and is committed to extending his benefits to all Americans and all humanity.
Dr. Zerhouni will also bring strong management skills to the NIH, and they are needed. This is a large and complex organization. The NIH budget has grown dramatically from around $2 billion in 1975 to more than $23 billion today. And my 2003 budget proposes an additional increase of nearly $4 billion. I urge Congress to approve this increase, and when they do, we will have completed my campaign commitment to double funding to this vital medical research over the next 5 years. Dr. Zerhouni is well prepared to manage this rapidly growing institution during times of great new opportunity and urgent biodefense needs. He has supervised research at Johns Hopkins, one of our Nation's leading research facilities. One former colleague calls him a quadruple threat: a doctor who excels at teaching, researching, patient care, and management.
Dr. Zerhouni shares my view that human life is precious and should not be exploited or destroyed for the benefits of others. And he shares my view that the promise of ethically conducted medical research is limitless. As Director of the NIH, Dr. Zerhouni will be at the forefront of our efforts to promote biomedical research with a careful regard for the bounds of medical ethics.
Dr. Zerhouni, thank you for accepting this incredibly exciting challenge.
Translating medical research into practical life-improving changes is a critical function of the Surgeon General. Since 1871, the Surgeon General has been America's chief health educator, giving Americans the best, most up-to-date knowledge on how to improve their health and reduce the risk of disease.
When I first learned that Dr. Richard Carmona once dangled out of a moving helicopter, I worried that maybe he wasn't the best guy to educate our Americans about reducing health risks. [Laughter] But that turned out to be just one of several times that Dr. Carmona risked his own life to save others. As an Army Green Beret in Vietnam, a decorated police officer in Pima County, Arizona, a SWAT team member, a nurse, and a physician, Dr. Carmona has redefined the term "hands-on medicine."
Dr. Carmona currently serves as the clinical professor of surgery and clinical assistant professor of family and community medicine at the University of Arizona. He is also the chairman of the State of Arizona Southern Regional Emergency Medical System. He will bring to the Surgeon General's Office a proven commitment to service and a strong management background.
The next Surgeon General will address three particularly urgent issues. First, the Surgeon General administers the 5,600-member Public Health Service Commission Corps, health care professionals who are on call for emergency duty. Members of this force were deployed in New York and Washington, DC, after the terrorist attacks of September the 11th and during the anthrax attacks that followed. Dr. Carmona has worked for many years in law enforcement and community preparedness, important preparation for any emergency that may come. Dr. Carmona is an experienced voice to help educate Americans about the best precautions and response to the threat of bioterrorism.
Second, I have asked Dr. Carmona to lead an important initiative focusing on prevention and lifelong healthy living as a key component to medical care. The research is overwhelming that simple improvements in diet and exercise would result in dramatic improvements in America's health. Studies show that overweight Americans who are at risk of developing type II diabetes or coronary heart disease can delay and possibly prevent these diseases with just moderate exercise and a healthy diet. Walking 30 minutes a day will dramatically improve your life. Playing a game with your children in your backyard will help. Walking in a park can make a difference to your health. These relatively small actions can dramatically reduce costs and strain on our health care system.
Fitness and a healthy lifestyle are a priority for me. I really like to run. It makes me feel better. The doc and I are going to encourage all our country to either run or walk or swim or bicycle for the good of their families, for the good of their own health, and for the good of the health of the Nation.
And thirdly, Dr. Carmona is going to speak regularly to the Nation about alcohol and drug abuse and the tremendous toll they take on our society. Substance abuse by students undermines academic achievement and dims the great hope of the American Dream. Alcohol is a prime cause for many of our society's ills, not the least of which is domestic violence. And the long-term health effects of alcohol and drug abuse are devastating. If we want to live healthier and longer, we're going to have to tackle the problems of alcohol and drug abuse. And Dr. Carmona's going to make that one of his priorities.
Doctor, I thank you so very much for your willingness to serve our country.
I have found two fine Americans who are willing to serve our Nation, and I'm grateful for their service. It is now my honor to welcome to the podium Dr. Zerhouni, the nominee to run our National Institute of Health.
NOTE: The President spoke at 1:47 p.m. in the East Room at the White House. In his remarks, he referred to Secretary of Health and Human Services Tommy G. Thompson; Nadia Zerhouni, wife of Elias Zerhouni, and their children, Will, Yasmin, and Adam; Diana Carmona, wife of Richard Carmona; and Idriss Jazairy, Algerian Ambassador to the United States.

Stung!
A swarm of new media stories on young George W. Bush's dereliction of duty pops his heroic-leadership bubble.
BY ERIC BOEHLERT
TOPICS: GEORGE W. BUSH, TEXAS, NEWS
On Feb. 13, as controversy swirled around President Bush’s service in the Texas Air National Guard during the Vietnam War, the White House released more than 400 pages of documents on the press corps, proving, it claimed, that Bush had served honorably and fulfilled his commitment. The sudden rush of records, often redundant, jumbled and out of chronological order, generally left reporters baffled. From Bush’s point of view, the document dump was a political success, as the controversy cooled and the paper trail ran dry.
In retrospect, it’s doubtful that even White House aides understood all the information embedded in the records, specifically the payroll documents. It’s also unlikely they realized how damaging the information could be when read in the proper context. Seven months later, the document dump is coming back to haunt the White House, thanks to researcher Paul Lukasiak, who has spent that time closely examining the paperwork, and more important, analyzing U.S. statutory law, Department of Defense regulations, and Air Force policies and procedures of the 1960s and 1970s. As a result, Lukasiak arrived at the overwhelming conclusion that not only did Bush walk away from his final two years of military obligation, coming dangerously close to desertion, but he attempted to cover up his absenteeism through swindle and fraud.
Lukasiak’s findings, detailed on his Web site the AWOL Project, have since been bolstered and augmented by independent research by the Boston Globe and the Associated Press. On Wednesday, CBS News reported what may be among the most damaging details yet: that Bush’s squadron commander, the late Col. Jerry Killian, complained he was being pressured by higher-ups to give Bush a favorable evaluation after he suspended him from flying for failure to take his annual physical exam. Titled “CYA,” Killian’s memo concluded, “I’m having trouble running interference and doing my job.”
But for the last several months, Lukasiak has practically had the AWOL story to himself, as the mainstream media mostly seemed silenced by the big February document release, the daunting task of decoding military personnel records, and the repeated refrain from the Bush White House that the president was honorably discharged. Among the three most compelling conclusions reached by Lukasiak in his new, meticulous research, are:
Bush’s request to transfer to an Alabama Guard unit in 1972, in order to work on the Senate campaign of a family friend, Lukasiak found, was not designed to be temporary, but rather was Bush’s attempt to sever ties completely with the Texas Air National Guard and find a new, permanent unit in Alabama for which he was ineligible, where he wouldn’t have to do any training during his final two years. His superiors in Texas essentially covered for Bush’s getaway. However, the Air Reserve Personnel Center (ARPC) in Denver, Colo., which had final say, uncovered the attempted scam, put an end to it, and admonished Bush’s superiors for endorsing Bush’s bogus request. (The CBS News report shows that the locals were chafing at interference from “higher-ups” presumably connected to the powerful Bush family.) In the interim, Bush simply ignored his weekend duties for nearly six straight months, not bothering to show up at military units in either Alabama or Texas.

Organized crime
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Organized crime or criminal organizations are transnational, national, or local groupings of highly centralised enterprises run by criminals for the purpose of engaging in illegal activity, most commonly for monetary profit. Some criminal organisations, such as terrorist organisations, are politically motivated. Sometimes criminal organisations force people to do business with them, as when a gang extorts money from shopkeepers for so-called "protection". Gangs may become disciplined enough to be considered organised.

Alderman Marty Swayzak: A man gets stuffed through the windshield of his own car. I mean, is that an accident or is it arson? Peole are asking me. I got to tell them something.
Jennifer Vaitkus: Let's get to the point here. We're starting to get the feeling that your office is dragging out this case, to embarrass the Alderman because of his fire department cutbacks.
Donald Rimgale: Alderman, I have a very uncomplicated job. To decide if a fire is arson or not. And if so, to catch the son of a bitch doing it. And if my investigative methods happen to muck up the campaign of certain mayor wannabes, I got to tell you, I'm not going to lose any sleep over it.

Shirley was just finishing Tuesday's Union Daily Times when she heard a wailing sound coming from her front porch. Shirley switched on the porch light and saw a young woman sobbing hysterically. The young woman cried, "Please help me!" "He's got my kids and he's got my car." Shirley lead Susan Smith into her home and Susan told her, "A black man has got my kids and my car." Shirley's husband, Rick told his son Rick, Jr. to call 911.
At 9:12 p.m., the 911 dispatcher called the Union County sheriff's office to direct them to respond to the Rick McCloud's 911 call. Once Susan had calmed down, Shirley asked Susan to tell her what happened. Susan told her the following story: "I was stopped at the red light at Monarch Mills and a black man jumped in and told me to drive." "I asked him why was he doing this and he said shut up and drive or I'll kill you." Susan continued and told Shirley that, at the abductor's direction, she drove northeast of Union for about four miles until, "he made me stop right past the sign." Shirley confirmed that the sign was for the John D. Long Lake, which was located several hundred yards outside of Shirley's front door. "He told me to get out. He made me stop in the middle of the road. Nobody was coming, not a single car." Susan continued, "I asked him, 'why can't I take my kids?'" Susan told Shirley that the man said, "I don't have time." Susan said that the man pushed her out of her car while he was pointing a gun at her side. Susan continued by telling Shirley that "When he finally got me out he said, "Don't worry, I'm not going to hurt your kids." Susan described how she had laid on the ground as the man drove away as both of her sons cried out for their mother. After awhile, Susan wasn't sure how long, she began to run and stopped when she reached Shirley McCloud's porch. Susan asked Shirley if she could use the bathroom and if she could call her mother. When Susan was unable to reach her mother, she called her stepfather and then her husband, David at Winn-Dixie. By the time Susan reached David by phone, the Union County Sheriff, Howard Wells had driven to the McClouds' home and was directing the search for the Smith children.

Reinhold Niebuhr
Reinhold Niebuhr, (born June 21, 1892, Wright City, Mo., U.S.—died June 1, 1971, Stockbridge, Mass.), American Protestant theologian who had extensive influence on political thought and whose criticism of the prevailing theological liberalism of the 1920s significantly affected the intellectual climate within American Protestantism. His exposure, as a pastor in Detroit, to the problems of American industrialism led him to join the Socialist Party for a time. A former pacifist, he actively persuaded Christians to support the war against Hitler and after World War II had considerable influence in the U.S. State Department. His most prominent theological work was The Nature and Destiny of Man, which was planned as a synthesis of the theology of the Reformation with the insights of the Renaissance.

Prisoner of War Medal
The Prisoner of War Medal is a military award of the United States armed forces which was authorized by Congress and signed into law by President Ronald Reagan on 8 November 1985. The United States Code citation for the POW Medal statute is 10 U.S.C. § 1128.
The Prisoner of War Medal may be awarded to any person who was a prisoner of war after April 5, 1917, (the date of the United States entry into World War I was the 6th). It is awarded to any person who was taken prisoner or held captive while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States; while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing Armed Force; or while serving with friendly forces engaged in armed conflict against an opposing Armed Force in which the United States is not a belligerent party. As of an amendment to Title 10 of the United States Code in 1989, the medal is also awarded for captivity by foreign armed forces that are hostile to the United States, under circumstances which the Secretary concerned finds to have been comparable to those under which persons have generally been held captive by enemy armed forces during periods of armed conflict. The person's conduct, while in captivity, must have been honorable. This medal may be awarded posthumously to the surviving next of kin of the recipient.

PHILADELPHIA — The Bush campaign's 757 was grounded briefly in St. Louis as mechanics fixed one of the plane's eight brakes. "There's no stopping us now," joked Bush's communications director, Karen Hughes.
In the span of a few hours, the campaign would snag on something far more serious: Thursday's disclosure of a drunken-driving conviction in Bush's past.
By Saturday, the campaign was back on track. Bush aides believed they had patched the problem quickly and neutralized the damage by aggressively raising questions about Democratic "dirty tricks."

Bush back on track after DUI flap
By Peter Nicholas

By Saturday, the campaign was back on track. Bush aides believed they had patched the problem quickly and neutralized the damage by aggressively raising questions about Democratic "dirty tricks."
Now they were dealing with simple annoyances, like the Teamsters' union leader in Dearborn, Mich., who mistakenly introduced retired Gen. Colin Powell as "Adam Clayton Powell," a former New York congressman known for his colorful and controversial career. Or Bush adding another syllable to the word "politicization" — it came out "politicalization."
But for more than 24 hours, the Bush camp had endured the kind of turbulence politicians dread.
Up to that point, the Republican nominee had been coasting in the last few days of Election 2000.
Keeping a relaxed schedule of three boisterous rallies a day, Bush looked like a candidate who believed victory was in hand.
Then, on Thursday evening, a TV station in Maine broke the story of Bush's 1976 arrest for driving under the influence, leaving the campaign no choice but to lay out unflattering details that Bush had deflected through the years with ambiguous references to his "irresponsible" past.
"The governor has acknowledged in the past he made mistakes," Hughes said, as reporters encircled her on the tarmac at O'Hare Airport in Chicago.
Mark McKinnon, a Bush media consultant, ultimately pulled her from the scrum. "Karen, we have to go!" McKinnon said.
Bush then flew to Milwaukee, press corps in tow, where he strode into a thunderous rally attended by 15,000 adoring supporters. The rally was on a presidential scale.
But it was a chastened-looking Bush who came out the back door afterward to take questions from reporters, hand-in-hand with his wife, Laura.
Should a man running for president have been more forthcoming? Bush was asked.
"I'm not trying to get away with anything," he said. "I didn't want to talk about this in front of my daughters."

Bush Once Pleaded Guilty to DUI
By Laurie Kellman
Associated Press Writer
Friday, Nov. 3, 2000; 11:27 a.m. EST
MILWAUKEE –– George W. Bush regrets driving under the influence of alcohol 24 years ago, but insisted the revelation just days before Tuesday's presidential election will do little to change voters' minds about him.
His campaign spokeswoman, Karen Hughes, told reporters Friday at a news conference on an airport tarmac that Bush has not hid his record. She said the only time Bush was asked whether he has been arrested for drinking and driving, he responded, "I do not have a perfect record as a youth."
She added, "He has made mistakes and has been very forthcoming about those mistakes."
Bush late Thursday said much the same.
"I have been straightforward with the people, saying that I used to drink too much in the past," the Republican presidential candidate told reporters Thursday night.
"I have been very candid about my past. I've said I've made mistakes in the past. People know that. They've thought about that. They're making their minds up now," he added.
The Sept. 4, 1976, arrest was first reported Thursday night by Fox News, based on a report prepared by a local affiliate in Maine. Bush, who was 30 years old at the time, said he chose to keep the incident private to protect his daughters, but his hand was forced by the news media.
He questioned the timing of the revelation.

Details about my recent sleep are very fuzzy today. Can't remember for sure when I woke up. 3 am maybe. Or maybe shortly after midnight, can't really remember as I usually can. Remember dreaming something about driving my Jeep. Then I returned to it where it was parked in a parking lot after I was traveling through some passageways, hallways in a transit facility maybe. The only part I remember clearly is where a woman, I assume was my imaginary girlfriend asked me out for drinks or something. I told her we needed to keep it really casual though because all I had to wear was sweatpants. Kind of the downside to dating a homeless person I reflect now as I write this. She told me she would wear something with holes in it. I hope that was her in my dream, although the woman in the dream seemed to be someone unfamilar though. But I have noticed that happening with other people I know. They are represented, somehow, by a different person, but I think of them as someone specific. I feel like that is part of the manipulation. I have noticed something similar in real dreams, but I don't think it is the same here. I think they are disquising themselves in my dream for some reason. Anyway, if it really was her, she actually doesn't have to worry about dressing down if we were to go out. Of course, if I have my way, it would be a moot point because why would I want to go out with her when I am in such an ugly situation? At the minimum, I would want to be back to work so that I have regained some independence. And hey, next time you are in my dreams, dear imaginary girlfriend, how about wearing a bikini? Red would be good, or yellow maybe.

I find myself thinking of some "memories" of when I was assigned to the USS Wainwright. The ship had left port for a short regional deployment and I stayed back because I had a medical appointment on base. Or something like that. Not really sure why I didn't leave with the ship but it was because of some appointment on base. After that appointment, there was a period before the ship was due back when I was assigned to work in an office there on base. I liked the assignment because I had to wear my dress uniform and I liked that because I got to wear all my ribbons. I didn't have any ribbons until we were in the Persian Gulf and so most of my ribbons were from that Operation Praying Mantis combat engagement. There were two other petty officers in the office; they might have been CPO's, but maybe Petty Officer First Class's. They didn't really have any work for me to do in there so they had me crumpling up pages of documents that were going into a burn bag because they were classified. They told me to take my time and pace myself because they didn't have any other work for me but I "remember" that I went through all the documents too soon and then didn't have anything to do. But then I was watching one of them typing up some regular report on a computer and he didn't know how to touch type so I volunteered to type it for him. I think the word processor was Gemstar. He told me I had saved him a lot of time. I had to leave and report back to the Wainwright the next day I think.
