What was the name of that Navy air base near where I was going to school at Dam Neck? I believe it was Oceania, which is similar to the name of the airline in Lost.
I've got this memory in my head, and I'm not sure anymore if any of this is true, any event and persons, of something a classmate wrote in my 1984 senior class book. She wrote something about me being the "top guy" in the Navy. That's one letter off from "Top Gun." I've got this crazy idea that I wasn't in the Navy, rather I was a pilot, perhaps in the Marines, which is a sub-organization of the Navy. I still don't believe that is true, but those are the ideas that are building in my head. It is consistent with that TNG episode where Picard goes from a glamorous life as the captain of a starship to being a junior-level crewmember. A similar experience in modern terms would be going from being a fighter pilot, a Marine captain perhaps, to being a low-level computer guy. It fits. I still don't believe it, and I'm kinda hoping now that it is true, but I don't know. Just seems too far-fetched. Too good to be true.

Reagan was president of the Screen Actors Guild at this time. His interest and involvement in politics was really only beginning. He was, however, a committed anti-Communist, and here cooperated with HUAC in commenting on the alleged activities of communists in Hollywood and the Screen Actors Guild.
CHAIRMAN J. PARNELL THOMAS: The record will show that Mr. McDowell, Mr. Vail, Mr. Nixon, and Mr. Thomas are present. A subcommittee is sitting. Staff members present: Mr. Robert E. Stripling, chief investigator; Messrs. Louis J. Russell, H.A. Smith, and Robert B. Gaston, investigators; and Mr. Benjamin Mandel, director of research.
STRIPLING: Would you say from your observation that that is typical of the tactics of the communists, to solicit and use the names of prominent people to either raise money or gain support?
REAGAN: I think it is in keeping with their tactics, yes sir.
STRIPLING: Do you think there is anything democratic about those tactics?
REAGAN: I do not, sir.
STRIPLING: As president of the Screen Actors Guild, you are familiar with the jurisdictional strike which has been going on in Hollywood for some time?

He asked the Screen Actors Guild to submit terms to Mr. (Richard) Walsh, and he told us to tell Mr. Walsh that, if he would give in on these terms, he in turn would break run this Sorrell and the other commies out -- I am quoting him -- and break it up. I might add that Mr. Walsh and Mr. Sorrell were running the strike for Mr. Hutchinson in Hollywood.
STRIPLING: Mr. Reagan, what is your feeling about what steps should be taken to rid the motion picture industry of any communist influences?
REAGAN: Well, sir, 99 percent of us are pretty well aware of what is going on, and I think, within the bounds of our democratic rights and never once stepping over the rights given us by democracy, we have done a pretty good job in our business of keeping those people's activities curtailed. After all, we must recognize them at present as a political party. On that basis we have exposed their lies when we came across them, we have opposed their propaganda, and I can certainly testify that in the case of the Screen Actors Guild we have been eminently successful in preventing them from, with their usual tactics, trying to run a majority of an organization with a well organized minority. In opposing those people, the best thing to do is make democracy work. In the Screen Actors Guild we make it work by insuring everyone a vote and by keeping everyone informed. I believe that, as Thomas Jefferson put it, if all the American people know all of the facts they will never make a mistake. Whether the party should be outlawed, that is a matter for the government to decide. As a citizen, I would hesitate to see any political party outlawed on the basis of its political ideology. However, if it is proven that an organization is an agent of foreign power, or in any way not a legitimate political party -- and I think the government is capable of proving that -- then that is another matter.

I have this distinct memory of a VCR tape copy I had of the 1990 film "The Hunt For Red October." There was a second VCR tape I had that I associate with that copy of the 1990 film "The Hunt For Red October" but during the time since I started composing this note on my offline-computer I haven't been able to recall the name of that other title. I was thinking about that because I acquired that VCR tape about the time in 1990 I sent through the US Postal Service a brand-new VCR machine to my mother for her birthday so that would have been September 1990. I can remember talking to her over the telephone later and she didn't know how to set the time on the machine and I wasn't familiar with the interface of the device but I did successfully talk her through setting the time on the VCR machine. I have just recently started thinking again about that for some reason. I sent along with the new VCR a couple of karaoke videotapes a buddy and I made in a bar in downtown Charleston South Carolina one night in January 1990 after I had returned from overseas and of which is a time that my memory tells me I was being processed for honorable discharge at the end of my six-year term of enlistment in the United States Navy. My enlistment term didn't actually end until May 1990 but I was able to begin processing as early as January, or maybe that was February 1990, because I had a lot of leave time accumulated and I could use that for what was called "early separation" and so that is how I remember it. I had two months leave accumulated and I was working at a civilian job by the third week of March 1990 in Greenville South Carolina.
Also, "Salesman." I saw that in a dream while sleeping recently. I saw myself going through an induction process in the United States Marine Corps and I woke up understanding that I was dreaming of my actual experience in 1990. I saw a document that indicated I was being inducted to the United States Marine Corps with the officer grade of Chief Warrant Officer 2. I saw in the dream another document associated with my induction and that document indicated I had been assigned the informal name "Salesman."

AV-8B Harrier II V/STOL Aircraft
In 1998, the McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Harrier II was the only fixed-wing vertical/short takeoff and landing (V/STOL) aircraft in the free world. Its ability to take off vertically makes it one of the most maneuverable combat aircraft in service, and it can zoom out of the range of enemy fire extremely quickly.
Based on the 1957 British-designed Hawker-Siddley "Kestrel," the AV-8B Harrier II was developed by a team representing McDonnell Douglas, British Aerospace and Rolls-Royce. Production of the St. Louis, Mo.-built AV-8B began in 1981, and more than 340 Harrier IIs were produced. They carried more fuel than the AV-8As and had higher lift and better cruise characteristics.
In 1991, Harrier IIs were the first U.S. Marine Corps tactical aircraft to arrive for Operation Desert Storm over the Persian Gulf. During the 42 days of combat, 86 Harrier IIs flew 3,380 combat sorties (4,112 combat hours) and delivered more than 6 million pounds of ordnance.

In telecommunications, identification, friend or foe (IFF) is an identification system designed for command and control. It enables military and national (civilian-located ATC) interrogation systems to identify aircraft, vehicles or forces as friendly and to determine their bearing and range from the interrogator. IFF may be used by both military and civilian aircraft.
IFF was first developed during World War II. The term is something of a misnomer, as IFF can positively identify friendly targets but not hostile ones. If an IFF interrogation receives no reply or an invalid reply, the object cannot be identified as friendly but is not positively identified as a foe.

Arthur Cayley Davis was born in Columbia, South Carolina. He attended the University of Nebraska from 1909-11 and then entered the U.S. Naval Academy. Davis graduated with the class of 1915 and was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Navy.
After serving in various assignments appropriate to a young naval officer, Davis attended flight training at Naval Air Station Pensacola in Florida, and was designated a Naval Aviator in 1923. Davis was a pioneer of dive bombing, having helped to develop dive bombing techniques, and the bombsight, during his tenure in the Bureau of Aeronautics and the Bureau of Ordnance in 1925.
From 30 June to 21 October 1942, Rear Admiral Davis was Commanding Officer of the Aircraft Carrier USS Enterprise (CV 6). Under his command, the Enterprise sailed for the South Pacific on 15 July where she joined Task Force 61 to support the amphibious landings in the Solomon Islands on 8 August. For the next two weeks, the carrier and her planes guarded seaborne communication lines southwest of the Solomon's. On 24 August, a strong Japanese force was discovered some 200 miles (300 km) north of Guadalcanal, and TF 61 sent planes to attack. This was the first time that the Grim Reapers of VF-10 deployed from the Enterprise under commanding officer James H. Flatley, who became known as "Reaper Leader." In the ensuing Battle of the Eastern Solomon's, the Japanese light carrier Ryujo was sent to the bottom, and the Japanese troops meant to land on Guadalcanal were forced back. The Enterprise suffered most heavily of the American ships; three direct hits and four near misses from dive bombers killed 77, wounded 91, and inflicted serious damage on the carrier. Quick, hard work by damage control parties patched her up so that she was able to return to Hawaii under her own power.
For his actions on 24 August, Davis received the Navy Cross. In part, the citation said: "By his remarkable seamanship, resourcefulness and his outstanding skill in maneuvering his ship, Rear Admiral Davis met the vigorous Japanese dive-bombing attack coolly and courageously, holding the damage by bomb hits to the ENTERPRISE to a minimum and, in turn, inflicting heavy casualties on the attacking enemy planes."
An Act of Congress on 23 February 1942, enabled Admirals to be promoted one grade, to three- and four-star grades, upon retirement if they had been specially commended for performance of duty in actual combat. Having met the conditions of this Act, Davis was promoted to the four-star rank of full Admiral in April 1955.

The following information is generously provided by the National League of POW/MIA Families:
Until July 18th, 1979, no commemoration was held to honor America's POW/MIAs, those returned and those still missing and unaccounted for from our nation's wars. That first year, resolutions were passed in the Congress and the national ceremony was held at the National Cathedral, Washington, D.C. The Missing Man formation was flown by the 1st Tactical Squadron, Langley AFB, Virginia. The Veterans Administration published a poster including only the letters "POW/MIA" and that format was continued until 1982 when a black and white drawing of a POW in harsh captivity was used to convey the urgency of the situation

American soldiers have been captured or have become missing in action during each of our country's wars.
The agony of their families has been incalculable. The prisoners themselves have suffered deprivation, starvation, abuse, torture, and sometimes death at the hands of their captors.
Their heroism in the face of these afflictions has often been greater than the heroism of men in battle; the prisoner's battle to preserve life, dignity, and honor can go on day after painful day, sometimes for years.
And the anguish suffered by the families of Americans missing in action is prolonged by lack of certainty over the fate of a husband or son or grandson or brother.
I am proud to sign a bill honoring these Americans who have given so much and endured so much. Many of them have won through to become some of America's finest citizens—like the former prisoner of war who is one of the sponsors of this bill, Senator Hathaway. I join all Americans in gratefully recognizing their sacrifices.
NOTE; As enacted, H.J. Res. 963 is Public Law 95-349, approved August 18. The resolution requests the President to issue a proclamation designating July 18, 1979, as "National P.O.W.-M.I.A. Recognition Day."

In each of America's past wars our prisoners of war have represented a special sacrifice. On them has fallen an added burden of loneliness, trauma, and hardship. Their burden becomes double when there is inhumane treatment by the enemy in violation of common human compassion, ethical standards, and international obligations.
The Congress has by Joint Resolution (Public Law 95-349) designated July 18, 1979, as "National P.O.W.-M.I.A. Recognition Day."
As we now enjoy the blessings of peace, it is appropriate that all Americans recognize the special debt owed those Americans held prisoner during wartime. It also is appropriate that we remember the unresolved casualties of war, our soldiers who are missing. The pain and bitterness of war endures for the families, relatives and friends of those whose fate is unknown. Our Nation will continue to seek answers to the questions that remain about their fate.
Now, THEREFORE, I, JIMMY CARTER, President of the United States of America, do hereby designate Wednesday, July 18, 1979, as National P.O.W.-M.I.A. Recognition Day, a day dedicated both to all former American prisoners of war as well as those still missing and to their families. I call on all Americans to join on this occasion in honoring those who made the special sacrifice of being captive in war, and their loved ones.
And I call on State and local officials and private organizations to observe this day with appropriate ceremonies and activities.

Police then ordered the group to leave, but some protesters had paid for rooms for the night. Those protesters went upstairs, including Sheehan.
One protester slipped inside the ballroom during the dinner but was escorted out after shouting about men and women dying, the Austin American-Statesman reported in its Sunday editions.

The vultures would do just fine for some time. Lots of bodies to eat… or maybe not. At first the corpses would be buried in the normal civilized way, but in a few weeks those systems would be overwhelmed, and then people would die, probably in their own beds and then-rats, of course. The coming year would be a banner one for rats. The only thing was: Rats depended on people to thrive. They lived on garbage and the output of civilization, a fairly specialized parasite, and this coming year they'd have a gut-filling worldwide feast and then-what? What would happen to the rat population? Dogs and cats would live off them, probably, gradually reaching a balance of some sort, but without millions of people to produce garbage for the rats to eat, their numbers would decline over the next five or ten years. That would be an interesting study for one of the field teams. How quickly would the rat population trend down, and how far down might it go?
Too many of the people in the Project concerned themselves with the great animals. Everyone loved wolves and cougars, noble beautiful animals so harshly slaughtered by men because of their depredation of domestic animals. And they'd do just fine once the trapping and poisoning stopped. But what of the lesser predators? What about the rats? Nobody seemed to care about them, but they were part of the system, too. You couldn't apply aesthetics to the study of Nature, could you? If you did, then how could you justify killing Mary Bannister, Subject F4? She was an attractive, bright, pleasant woman, after all, not very like Chester, or Pete, or Henry, not offensive to behold as they had been… but like them, a person who didn't understand Nature, didn't appreciate her beauty, didn't see her place in the great system of life, and was therefore unworthy to participate. Too bad for her. Too bad for all the test subjects, but the planet was dying, and had to be saved, and there was only one way to do it, because too many others had no more understanding of the system than the lower animals who were an unknowing part of the system itself. Only man could hope to understand the great balance. Only man had the responsibility to sustain that balance, and if that meant the reduction of his own species, well, everything had its price. The greatest and finest irony of all was that it required a huge sacrifice, and that the sacrifice came from man's own scientific advances. Without the instrumentalities that threatened to kill the planet, the ability to save it would not have existed. Well, of such irony was reality made, the epidemiologist told himself.

Soviet Communist Party gives up monopoly on political power
The Central Committee of the Soviet Union's Communist Party agrees to endorse President Mikhail Gorbachev's recommendation that the party give up its 70-year long monopoly of political power. The Committee's decision to allow political challenges to the party's dominance in Russia was yet another signal of the impending collapse of the Soviet system.
At the end of three days of extremely stormy meetings dealing with economic and political reforms in the Soviet Union, the Central Committee announced that it was endorsing the idea that the Soviet Communist Party should make "no claim for any particular role to be encoded in the Constitution" that was currently being rewritten. The proposal was but one of many made by President Gorbachev during the meetings. Critics of Gorbachev's plan charged that dissipating the Communist Party's power would erode the gains made since the Bolshevik Revolution and would weaken the international stature of the Soviet Union. Supporters, however, carried the day--they noted the impatience of the Soviet people with the slow pace of change and the general pessimism about the crumbling economy under communist rule. As one Communist Party official noted, "Society itself will decide whether it wishes to adopt our politics." However, he was also quick to add that the move by the Central Committee did not mean that the Communist Party was removing itself from public affairs. Many foreign observers stressed that even in a new pluralistic political system in Russia, the well-established party would have immense advantages over any challengers.
The response from the United States was surprise and cautious optimism. One State Department official commented that, "The whole Soviet world is going down the drainpipe with astonishing speed. It's mind-boggling." Former Secretary of Defense Caspar Weinberger indicated that he was "personally gratified and astonished that anyone would have the chance to say such things in Moscow without being shot." President George Bush was more circumspect, merely congratulating President Gorbachev for his "restraint and finesse."
Ironically, the fact that the Communist Party was willing to accept political challenges to its authority indicated how desperately it was trying to maintain its weakening power over the country. The measures were little help, however--President Gorbachev resigned on December 25, 1991 and the Soviet Union officially ceased to exist on December 31, 1991.

A disgruntled settler kills an Apache chief at Fort Yuma, and the fort's commander knows that the chief's son, Manga Colorado, will seek revenge and go on the warpath. He sends word by a courier to Fort Apache where a supply column is due to head across the desert to Fort Yuman, but the courier is killed by Mangas. The column, under the command of Lieutenant Ben Keegan who hates Apaches because he doesn't trust them, and because his assigned scout is Jonas, the brother of an Apache girl, Francesca, whom Keegan has been having an affair with. Also accompanying them is Melanie Crowne, who is going to do missionary work among the Apaches. Mangas attacks the column wiping out everybody but Keegan, Jonas and Melanie. Francesca is killed while trying to warn Keegan, and he realizes how foolish he had been in his prejudice and in keeping his love secret. The Apaches, dressed in the uniforms of the dead soldier, plan to gain entrance to Fort Yuma and massacre the men there.

A story of the motorcycle cops of the traffic-division of the Los Angeles Police Department. Ken Foster, a trainee, is engaged to the sister, Jean Collins, of motorcycle policeman Larry Collins, who is taking part in the investigation of a hit-and-run killing the police believe was a deliberate murder. Sighting a stolen car used in the killing, Larry pursues it and is killed by the driver. Ken is taken from the training academy and given the assignment of impersonating a known auto-thief, now in police custody, in the hopes he will be accepted by the hot-car ring working the city. He gets close before his identity is discovered and he is confronted at gunpoint by the gang-leader.
