"I tell people that their first Ironman should be their best one, because finishing should be their only expectation."

ABC sports has called it one of the most defining moments in sport. Thousands of Ironman competitors, to this day, cite it as the reason they wanted to try out this sport we call triathlon.

It was a few minutes of television aired in 1982, but, oh, what a few minutes it was. When it played on Wide World of Sports, people started calling their friends and telling them to turn on their televisions ... they had to watch this!

"This" was a 23-year-old college student who was doing the race, in part, as research for her exercise physiology thesis.

"This" was Julie Moss desperately trying to get to the finish line, looking like a "punch-drunk" boxer as she staggered ... then fell ... then got up and staggered some more ... then fell ... then got up ... then fell ... and eventually began to crawl towards the line.

"This" was the event that inspired millions of people, the event that started so many people in the sport, the event that has "iced" the expression that "just finishing an Ironman is a victory."


"To go back to Hawaii is a great way to celebrate something that had started out as a lark," she says.

What "started out as a lark" has become our sport's, and Julie Moss', defining moment.

The next thing in her pile was pretty important, a report of procedures for shutting down nuclear power reactors, and the subsequent safety of the shut-down reactor systems: how long before environmental factors might attack and corrode the internal items, and what environmental damage could result from it. Yes, this was very important stuff, and fortunately the index appended to it showed data on individual reactors across the country. She popped another starlight mint into her mouth and leaned forward, setting the papers flat on the desktop so that she could stare straight down at them for reading purposes.

"This seems to work," Steve said quietly.

"How many strands fit inside?" Maggie asked.

"Anywhere from three to ten."

"And how large is the overall package?"

"Six microns. Would you believe it? The packaging is white in color, so it reflects light pretty well, especially UV radiation, and in a water-spray environment, it's just about invisible." The individual capsules couldn't be seen with the naked eye, and only barely with an optical microscope. Better still, their weight was such that they'd float in air about the same as dust particles, as readily breathable as secondhand smoke in a singles bar. Once in the body, the coating would dissolve, and allow release of the Shiva strands into the lungs or the upper GI, where they could go to work.

"Water soluble?" Maggie asked.

"Slowly, but faster if there's anything biologically active in the water, like the trace hydrochloric acid in saliva, for example. Wow, we could have really made money from the Iraqis with this one, kiddo - or anybody, who wants to play bio-war in the real world."

"Well, I hope this fogging system works; 'cuz if it doesn't, you'll have a lot of heat-stroke cases here, pal."

"It works," the Aussie cop told him. "It's fully tested."

"Can I take a look at it now? Bill Henriksen wants me to see if it could be used as a chemical-agent delivery system by the bad guys."

"Certainly. This way." They were there in five minutes. The water-input piping was contained in its own locked room. The cop had the key for this, and took the colonel inside.

"Oh, you chlorinate the water here?" Gearing asked in semi surprise. The water came in from the Sydney city water system, didn't it?

"Yes, we don't want to spread any germs on our guests, do we?"

"Not exactly," Colonel Gearing agreed, looking at the plastic chlorine container that hung on the distribution piping beyond the actual pumps. Water was filtered through that before it went into the fogging nozzles that lung in all the concourses and ramps to the stadium bowl itself. The system would have to be flushed with unchlorinated water before delivery would work, but that was easily accomplished, and the false chlorine container in his hotel room was an exact twin of this one. The contents given looked like chlorine, almost, though the nano-capsules actually contained something called Shiva. Gearing thought about that behind blank brown eyes. He'd been a chemical weapons expert his whole professional life, having worked at the Edgewood Arsenal in Maryland and Dugway Proving Ground in Utah-but, well, this wasn't really chemical warfare. It was bio-war, a sister science of the one he'd studied for over twenty uniformed ears.

"A fog-cooling system. We got it from your chaps," Aukland said.

"One of our engineers saw it in - Arizona, I think. It sprays a very fine water mist. The tiny droplets absorb heat energy and evaporate into the atmosphere, has the same effect as air-conditioning, but with a negligible energy expenditure."

"Ahh," Bill Henriksen said, doing his best to act surprised. "How widely distributed is the system?"

"Just the tunnels and concourses. The architect wanted to put it all over the stadium, but people objected, said it would interfere with cameras and such," Aukland answered, "too much like a real fog."

"Okay, I think I need to look at that."

"Why?"

"Well, sir, it's a hell of a good way to deliver a chemical agent, isn't it?"

Federal Grand Jury Indictment Filed For Spokane Man Accused Of Mailing Ricin Laced Letters

SPOKANE, Wash. - A federal grand jury has indicted a Spokane man for mailing a threatening letter containing the poison ricin to President Obama. The indictment handed down Wednesday contends that 37-year-old Matthew Buquet developed the biological agent in violation of federal law, and that he further violated the law by mailing letters containing ricin to Obama and U.S. District Court Judge Fred Van Sickle. The letters also contained the statement: "We have a bomb placed. We are going to Kill you. Hezbollah." Buquet was arrested last month in connection with the sending of five ricin-laced letters from Spokane, and remains in jail. The other letters were mailed to a Spokane post office, Fairchild Air Force Base and the CIA. No one was injured and no motive has been offered for the mailings.PREVIOUS STORY:

KHQ.COM - On Wednesday a Federal Grand Jury indictment was filed for a Spokane man who's accused of mailing ricin laced letters. The suspect is identified as Matthew Ryan Buquet. The indictment says Buquet wrote "We have a bomb placed, we are going to kill you, Hezbollah," to President Obama and to a Spokane Federal Judge.

Today, June 8, 2013, postal workers at the U.S. Post Office on W. Riverside Avenue, Spokane, Washington, located the fifth letter being sought by FBI and USPIS investigators in connection with four others containing the active ricin toxin. It came through the post office, after being returned to sender by a location that does not receive mail deliveries. It had been addressed to the Central Intelligence Agency (CIA). The envelope was found unopened and not leaking any materials. There are no reports of USPS employee injuries or illness.

The external appearance of the envelope is similar to the previous four letters, with a postmark of May 13, 2013 from Spokane, Washington, and the handwritten address penned in red ink. The unopened letter is being safely transported to the National Bioforensic Analysis Center for further testing.

The FBI and USPIS are not aware of any injuries or illnesses caused by any of the letters.

As noted previously, Matthew Ryan Buquet faces a one-count grand jury indictment for mailing threatening communications, in relation to the letter sent to a Federal District Court Judge in Spokane.

June 8, 2002 Ironman Utah!

On Ironman morning as I battled 6-foot swells in Utah Lake, swallowing lung sized gulps of dark brown Utah Lake water, I feared that perhaps that dream just might become reality.

Unfortunately it WAS reality for fellow Ironman swimmer John Boland from Redondo Beach, California who lost his life in Utah Lake that day. The only swimming fatality in the history of Ironman happened in that Lake that day probably no more than a stone's throw away from me.


I was worried about the mass swim start in the dark, murky water. How long would I be bashed about? Will I lose my goggles? How can I spot other swimmers under the muddy water? - I couldn't even see my hand in front of my face during yesterday's practice swim!

I might have sent Lesa Jewell photos from the two sprint triathlons I finished in 2003. I don't know. Seafair maybe.

I remember the photos from one where I wondered to myself if a woman had timed it so she would be in the photo with me. The photographer was in clear view.

Those sprint-distance triathlon, which I think as the most common, are the easiest distance for me to cover. Or at least they were. I doubt I could finish the swim course today. Back then though that distance was more of a training day for me. I have often thought I could finish that distance every day seven days a week. I probably could have finished the olympic-distance triathlons every day. Maybe. Those were only twice this distance of the sprint triathlon. Certainly three times per week I could have easily covered that distance.

So anyway, I sent an email to Steve Ballmer one day when I was working at Microsoft. I had read something somewhere about him being a basketball player. I might have read that somewhere in information they sent out to Microsoft employees or I read it in the local news. So one day I sent him an email and I opened with a paragraph that included precisely or very similar to the phrase "I understand you're an athlete too."

What I was writing about was how the Ironman corporation had a competition that was for president's of corporations and I wrote to Ballmer telling him about how I was trying to finish and Ironman triathlon and I wondered if he would compete for Microsoft in that Ironman event for corporate presidents.

That was when I wrote about how I had to drop out of Ironman Coeur d'Alene because the heat had been extreme that day and I specifically used the phrase that I couldn't "handle the heat."

I did finish the course the next year and that day I finished was 27 June 2004.

Sometime around that time back in 2003 I had read also about the director of human resources being a competitor in Ironman triathlons and I wrote to him about how I could wait to get back out to Coeur d'Alene and rub my toes in the sand of the lake's beach.

Ballmer responded with a short message that was precisely the words or very similar to: "Not for me, but thanks."

Ironman officials cut Provo's contest in half

The full triathlon will be held in northern Idaho

PROVO — Ironman North America will return here in 2003 — halfway, that is.

Organizers announced Saturday the event will be shortened to a Half-Ironman, meaning distances of the running, biking and swimming portions will be cut in half.

The competition is scheduled for May 31, 2003.

Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, has been chosen to host a full Ironman on June 29, 2003, to replace Provo's full event, said Shane Facteau, Ironman North America spokesman.

"Obviously we need a full Ironman event in the West, but we didn't want to give up Provo, so this gives us the best of both worlds," he said.

During Provo's first Ironman event in June, John Boland, 53, Redondo Beach, Calif., drowned as winds gusted to 50 mph and swimmers battled 3-foot waves in Utah Lake.

Organizers canceled the 2.4-mile swim 20 minutes after it began, but by that time most of the 1,550 athletes already were in the water.

Ironman Triathlon

With the addition of Tempe, Ironman now hosts a full-distance Ironman in every corner of continental North America. The new date: April 9, 2005

Ironman North America, the Tempe Convention and Visitors Bureau and the city of Tempe are proud to announce the addition of the newest race in the Ironman North America series, Ironman Arizona. The inaugural Ironman Arizona is set to take place on Saturday, April 9, 2005. The five-year agreement makes Tempe one of only five sites in the continental United States to host a sanctioned Ironman event.

"Tempe is a great fit for Ironman North America," said Ironman North America President Graham Fraser. "One of our goals has been to host an Ironman in a large scale market and the Tempe region is a great market for our venture in the Southwest. There is great excitement about this event already."

Ironman triathlon is considered one of the most grueling and most inspiring events in all of sports. Ironman triathlon features a 2.4-mile swim, a 112-mile bike, and a complete marathon (26.2 miles) all in succession. Athletes have 17 hours to complete the event (from the 7 a.m. start until midnight).

The event has been made possible by cooperation between Ironman North America, the city of Tempe, Tempe Convention and Visitors Bureau, the city of Fountain Hills and the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, as well the State of Arizona and the Arizona Department of Transportation.

"As Governor, I am proud of Tempe, Fountain Hills, the Arizona Department of Transportation and the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community for working together -- not only to create an outstanding Ironman course, but for bringing more than $4 million in tourism to Arizona with this event," said Arizona Governor Janet Napolitano of the announcement.

What began as a bet among a group of Naval officers 25 years ago now has become an international phenomenon, with 16 events around the world featuring more than 20,000 athletes annually. The crux of the original argument -- were swimmers, cyclists or runners the fittest?

So on February 18, 1978, 15 competitors decided to put themselves to the test by swimming 2.4 miles, biking 112 miles and running 26.2 miles. And thus, Ironman triathlon was born.

(AP) — The FBI said Monday that no one has been arrested after last weeks' discovery of a pair of letters containing the deadly poison ricin in Spokane, but the agency remained tight-lipped about the investigation and a weekend raid at a downtown apartment building.

"No additional information will be released to the public today," said Frank Harrill, the FBI agent in charge of the Spokane office.

Agency spokeswoman Ayn Sandalo Dietrich added legal documents in the case also might be sealed. Their comments come after law enforcement officers raided a Spokane apartment Saturday and witnesses said they escorted a man from the building.

The letters were postmarked last Tuesday in Spokane and addressed to the downtown post office and the adjacent federal building. They were intercepted by the Postal Service, and no one was injured.

Investigators in hazardous materials suits spent most of Saturday executing a search warrant at the three-story apartment building. Authorities said there was no public health risk.

Everything seemed back to normal at The Osmun apartments Monday morning, with no signs of Saturday's raid. There was no answer after a knock on the door of the apartment that was raided.

Witnesses have said a man was escorted from the building by law enforcement officers Saturday morning. Sandalo Dietrich declined to say if anyone was being questioned in connection with the letters.

"There have been no arrests and no charges filed," she said Monday.

On Saturday, Sandalo Dietrich said the FBI was "not actively looking for a subject."

Authorities have not released a potential motive. They also have not said whether the letters targeted anyone in particular.

Ricin is a highly toxic substance made from castor beans. As little as 500 micrograms, the size of the head of a pin, can kill an adult if inhaled or ingested.

NASA selects Spokane native as astronaut trainee

In preschool, Anne McClain wrote and illustrated a book depicting a family of four going to a store, buying rockets and suits, and flying into outer space.

Fast forward about 30 years, one Army career and 18 months of suspense, McClain is about to make her 4-year-old self’s dreams come true.

The 34-year-old Gonzaga Prep graduate has been chosen as one of NASA’s eight newest astronaut trainees. The eight names were released publicly last week, although the candidates learned their fate June 6.

“I couldn’t stand, I couldn’t breathe, and then there were tears,” McClain said via phone from Washington, D.C., of the moment she learned she would become an astronaut.

She somehow pulled herself together enough to joke with the NASA representative who called her with the good news.

“I remember her asking if I was still interested in the position,” McClain said. “I told her I would have to check my schedule. Then I started laughing and said, ‘Of course.’?”

The eight trainees were chosen from a pool of more than 6,100 applicants.
