Navy Nurse Battling Cancer, But Living Life To The Fullest

A friend of roughly 14 years, Michelle Ortiz said she remembers meeting Ronda while the two were in the Navy's Combat Casualty Care Course (C4). The two later worked together as OR nurses.

"I always tell her I want to be like her when I grow up because she's so amazingly positive," she laughed. "I admire the way she sees the best in everybody. She always makes everything more fun. It's a quality I wish I had."

What's helped her make it through the tough times is talking with other young survivors in her hometown, Uniontown, Pa., helping to motivate them, and reminding them some things in life are beyond your control.

"That's been therapeutic to me," she said.

She has also been whitewater rafting - she even went two weeks after her double mastectomy. "It was very emotional for me. I told the guy [where she went whitewater rafting] as long as I'm around, I'll do this ... You're on the water, and you just feel alive. You're watching the leaves blow past."
