Bush says he opposes breaking up Microsoft

STONY BROOK, N.Y. - Republican presidential front-runner George W. Bush said he opposes breaking up Microsoft as a way to resolve the government's antitrust case against the software giant.

U.S. District Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson is now deciding whether Microsoft's business practices violated the Sherman Antitrust Act. State and federal antitrust enforcers have said breaking up the company is a sanction they could propose if Jackson finds Microsoft broke the law.

Asked before a campaign event yesterday on Long Island whether he thought Microsoft should be broken up, Bush said, "I'm against it.

I'm not proud of that. I oftentimes said that years ago I made some mistakes. I occasionally drank too much and I did on that night.

I was pulled over. I admitted to the policeman that I had been drinking. I paid a fine. And I regret that it happened. But it did. I've learned my lesson.

Responding to reports Thursday of a decades-old incident, Texas Gov. George W. Bush acknowledged being arrested and pleading guilty to drunken driving.

The GOP presidential nominee confirmed the episode, which took place in Maine over the 1976 Labor Day weekend, after details were broadcast by Maine television stations. Several years ago, Bush was asked directly whether he had ever been arrested for drunken driving, and he refused to say.


Bush repeatedly questioned the timing of the Maine news reports. "I think that's an interesting question," he told reporters. "Why now? . . . I've got my suspicions."
