Plot Summary for

Oklahoma Renegades (1940)


Stony Brooke, Rusty Joslin and Rico, known as The Three Mesquiteers, return to Oklahoma at the close of the Spanish-American War, and are concerned that some of their wounded buddies have no prospects for a satisfactory future. When the government offers preferred homesteads in the newly-opened Oklahoma territory to war veterans, they send word for their pals to join them there. Once there, the veterans meet a hostile reception as the cattlemen resent the influx of "nesters" and are determined to drive them out. Mace Liscomb and his brother Orv plan not only to drive out the homesteaders, but to also double cross the cattlemen and gain exclusive titles to the range lands for themselves. Stony and his pals eventually show the honest cattlemen that there is room for the settlers and that both are fighting a common enemy.

So where was that? France? Toulon France? Maybe. That was my last stop before flying back to the United States, similar to the 1991 film where they are going to Mexico, I was riding from Monaco France to Toulon France in the back of the mail truck and I was seriously hung over from drinking too much and I was crashed on a pile of boxes in the back of the mail truck that would take me to the US military flight back to Charleston SC. A serious windstorm had blown through Monaco just about that time. The plane flew for what seemed to be only a few minutes before we had several hours of wait time at another airport to repair something that had gone wrong with the airplane.

Reading about them riding in that small transport plane for debriefing reminds me of something similar in my memory, I'm pretty sure I wrote about this a couple years ago. I was leaving the Wainwright to return to the States for the end of my enlistment. We were anchored off Monaco and I had to ride in to port in the Captain's gig. Our Senior Chief, who later became Master Chief, met me on the quarterdeck to shake my hand and send me off. I can't remember his name now, but I remember someone on the Wainwright forum mentioned running into him in Florida a while back. I was traveling to Toulon to catch a MAC flight back to Philadelphia I think it was and from there to Charleston. I think it was about a two hour trip from Monaco to Toulon and I had to travel all the way there in the back of the mail truck, sitting cramped up on a bunch of boxes.

- In support of deployment preparations, BARRY operated with other JTG GEORGE WASHINGTON units. BARRY'S participation included two SM-2 missile firings. COMPTUEX marked the first time BARRY has operated with all members of the battle group


08 Oct 94- Suez Canal Transit

- Late on 07 October, BARRY received urgent tasking to join USS GEORGE WASHINGTON and proceed at best speed to the Persian Gulf in response to Iraq's massing of troops on the Kuwaiti border. BARRY and GEORGE WASHINGTON steamed at 3 1 knots for 3,300 nautical miles to arrive at the Strait of Hormuz on 14 October.

15-2 7 Oct 94- Operation FTGILANT WARRZOR, Persian Gulf

- BARRY'S participation in Operation VIGILANT WARRIOR included escort of the amphibious group to anchorage off Kuwait City, validating the AEGIS destroyer's ability to assume the role of Green Crown. BARRY also served as CV escort, alternate Persian Gulf AAWC, and principal contingency strike platform.

Another time, I grabbed onto a cable that was supposed to be grounded, but I grabbed it before the guy with the grounding wand could hit it. A good lesson perhaps in overtraining. I remember my feet hurting for a while after that, but I didn't feel any kind of shock at the time. I used to wear a knife and another tool on my belt and it rested against my hip, but I can't remember if I was wearing it that day. The worst part, today, was walking around trying to get to the doctor's office and having this overwhelming feeling that everyone around me, walking, driving, they all were wondering how I was going to make it there on time. They all knew where I was supposed to be and they were all watching me like I am some kind of reality show contestant. It is overwhelming at times. I suppose it is, in some minor ways, not unlike a major leaque baseball player feels, at least some of them, when they are trying to make their first catch of a pop fly to the outfield. But this is worse. This all is just evil. The level of deception over all these years is just beyond evil. There are probably a lot of egomaniacs that fantasized about this kind of attention, but I never have. It is lunacy beyond articulation.

I find myself thinking about this time a long time ago. I may have been in the 4th grade at the time, I don't remember. One of us, maybe me, accidentally made up the fold-out sofa bed with the dog still in it. She stayed in there all day. I came home from school and sat down on the sofa wondering where she was. Then I started hearing her faintly crying out, but I couldn't tell where the sound was coming from. This other neighbor kid was sitting on the couch too, we had to have been crushing her. Eventually I realized she was inside the couch and let her out. She jumped out and ran to the water bowl. I can certainly understand how that dog must have felt.

There was that dream I had the other night, where I was inside a missile. I remembered today the similarity with this movie, in that Cochrane converted an ICBM into his warp ship. But why would someone create a connection between me and Cochrane? I didn't create warp drive in the past only to have someone block my memory of that, did I? It's funny, when I read something the other day about Data arguing with Einstein, it reminded me of something I was writing in my journal back in the early '90s. I was wondering why it was impossible to travel faster than the speed of light. A couple years ago I was writing about it again. The idea presented itself to me about why it was impossible, something about atoms not being able to work because electrons could not transfer energy faster than the speed of light. I wondered if it was possible to create some kind of process to transfer energy to those atoms, not unlike a cell's mitochondria works. Today I have been wondering if anything I remember about the past is real. Do I have a different past? Am I really who I think I am? The stuff I imagine happening to me sometimes, did that stuff really happen? I wonder if these movies and tv shows have actually been sort of inoculations, to keep me from questioning my reality. I do question reality sometimes, but it wasn't until I saw that Matrix movie a while back, did I really start to wonder about reality. But it didn't seem to matter, I wasn't overly concerned that I may be living that kind of false reality. I still don't think I am living such an extreme unreality as in the Matrix, but I wonder if there is a divergence point in my life, a shadow, a distorted period. Or have I been living a life like in the movie Soldier, or maybe like in Blade Runner, where Rachael, and I assume Harrison Ford's character, have false memories of their life. Am I Harrison Ford's character in this reality? A replicant searching for replicants?

I've got this crazy idea that I wasn't in the Navy, rather I was a pilot, perhaps in the Marines, which is a sub-organization of the Navy. I still don't believe that is true, but those are the ideas that are building in my head. It is consistent with that TNG episode where Picard goes from a glamorous life as the captain of a starship to being a junior-level crewmember. A similar experience in modern terms would be going from being a fighter pilot, a Marine captain perhaps, to being a low-level computer guy. It fits. I still don't believe it, and I'm kinda hoping now that it is true, but I don't know. Just seems too far-fetched. Too good to be true.

They might have given me that Wexford address in Taylors because I served on the Barry (DDG-52) before the Stout and the Cole. Maybe I was Weapons Officer on Barry. Barry was commissioned 12/12/92. So maybe Wexford in Taylors because Barry was my first surface warfare fleet assignment.

Whose music was it that Rachell Barnett told me she like to listen to that time when she was over at my apartment on Wexford? Was it Barry Manilow? After I wondered about that, I then thought that maybe it was Neil Diamond. Can't remember. While Rachell Barnett probably wasn't a real person and may be representative of something else, it is probably these little details that come from people around me when I was doing what ever it was I was involved in at the time.

A Proclamation

Commodore John Barry, hero of the American Revolution and holder of the first commission in the United States Navy under the Constitution, was born in 1745, in County Wexford, Ireland. Commodore Barry was commissioned to command the brig Lexington, one of the first ships bought and equipped for the Revolution, and became a national hero with the engagement and capture of the British warship Edward on April 7, 1776. He distinguished himself throughout the Revolution and again shortly thereafter in the Quasi-War with France as a fighter and seaman.

In 1797, with the advice and consent of the Senate, President Washington appointed Commodore Barry Captain in the Navy of the United States and Commander of the Frigate United States. In so doing, the President said that he placed ``special Trust and Confidence in (Commodore Barry's) Patriotism, Valour, Fidelity, and Abilities''.

TROPICAL STORM BARRY SWIRLS TO LIFE

MIAMI (AP) _ Tropical Storm Barry has swirled to life, packing 40 mph winds but posing no immediate threat to land, the National Weather Service said today.

At noon EDT, the center of the storm was near latitude 24.5 north, longtitude 55.5 west, or about 675 miles northeast of the northern Leeward Islands in the Lesser Antilles.

That was precisely the same position the storm held six hours earlier.

Satellite pictures indicated Barry became nearly stationary during the night, forecasters said. Some strengthening was expected before tonight, but the storm's steering currents have diminished and its movement was expected to be slow and erratic.

Barry, which had been moving northwest, turned sharply to the north Wednesday night and posed no immediate threat to land, said forecaster Hal Gerrish at the National Hurricane Center in suburban Coral Gables.

The storm formed as a depression earlier this week off west Africa. It became the Atlantic hurricane season's second named storm when its maximum sustained winds reached 39 mph Wednesday.

If winds reach 74 mph, it would become the first hurricane of the June- November season.

The season's first named storm was Allison, which caused widespread flood damage in Texas and Louisiana last month.

Korabl-Sputnik 4 or Vostok-3KA No.1, also known as Sputnik 9 in the West, was a Soviet spacecraft which was launched in 1961. It was a test flight of the Vostok spacecraft, carrying the mannequin Ivan Ivanovich, a dog named Chernushka, some mice and a guinea pig.

Korabl-Sputnik 4 was launched at 06:29:00 UTC on 9 March 1961, atop a Vostok-K carrier rocket flying from Site 1/5 at the Baikonur Cosmodrome. It was successfully placed into low Earth orbit. The spacecraft was only intended to complete a single orbit, so it was deorbited shortly after launch, and reentered on its first pass over the Soviet Union. It landed at 08:09:54 UTC, and was successfully recovered. During the descent, the mannequin was ejected from the spacecraft in a test of its ejection seat, and descended separately under its own parachute.

Susan Smith, whose tearful pleas for her sons' return inspired a nationwide vigil, was charged with killing 3-year-old Michael and 14-month-old Alex. And the nine-day search by authorities and hundreds of volunteers ended where their mother's story began: at John D. Long Lake, where a car with two small bodies was found.

CNN, citing an unidentified source, said Smith became a strong suspect when investigators found a letter from a boyfriend telling her he wanted to be with her but he "did not want any kids around."

When the arrested suspects blood type doesn't match the blood found on the victioms clothing Donald Thompson, the stepfather, becomes an even more likely suspect. TROPICAL STORM BARRY SWIRLS TO LIFE

MIAMI (AP) _ Tropical Storm Barry has swirled to life, packing 40 mph winds but posing no immediate threat to land, the National Weather Service said today.

At noon EDT, the center of the storm was near latitude 24.5 north, longtitude 55.5 west, or about 675 miles northeast of the northern Leeward Islands in the Lesser Antilles.

That was precisely the same position the storm held six hours earlier.

Satellite pictures indicated Barry became nearly stationary during the night, forecasters said. Some strengthening was expected before tonight, but the storm's steering currents have diminished and its movement was expected to be slow and erratic.

Barry, which had been moving northwest, turned sharply to the north Wednesday night and posed no immediate threat to land, said forecaster Hal Gerrish at the National Hurricane Center in suburban Coral Gables.

The storm formed as a depression earlier this week off west Africa. It became the Atlantic hurricane season's second named storm when its maximum sustained winds reached 39 mph Wednesday.

If winds reach 74 mph, it would become the first hurricane of the June- November season.

The season's first named storm was Allison, which caused widespread flood damage in Texas and Louisiana last month.

Barry originated from a tropical wave, which moved off the coast of Africa on 7 July. By the 9th, a tropical depression formed from the wave midway between Africa and the Lesser Antilles. The depression tracked northwestward, reaching tropical storm strength on the 11th.

The declaration was received by Domei Press at 4:30 am, July 27, 1945, and was immediately reported to the government, according to the chronicle of Jiji-Ttsushin (1995). Japan's Prime Minister at the time, 77 year-old Suzuki Kantaro, held a press conference on July 28 at 4:00 pm, and in his answer to reporters' questions about the Potsdam Declaration, supposedly said:

My thinking is that the joint declaration is virtually the same as the Cairo Declaration. The government of Japan does not consider it having any crucial value. We simply mokusatsu-suru. The only alternative for us is to be determined to continue our fight till the end.

Plane crashes into Empire State Building

A United States military plane crashes into the Empire State Building on this day in 1945, killing 14 people. The freak accident was caused by heavy fog.

The B-25 Mitchell bomber, with two pilots and one passenger aboard, was flying from New Bedford, Massachusetts, to LaGuardia Airport in New York City. As it came into the metropolitan area on that Saturday morning, the fog was particularly thick. Air-traffic controllers instructed the plane to fly to Newark Airport instead.

This new flight plan took the plane over Manhattan; the crew was specifically warned that the Empire State Building, the tallest building in the city at the time, was not visible. The bomber was flying relatively slowly and quite low, seeking better visibility, when it came upon the Chrysler Building in midtown. It swerved to avoid the building but the move sent it straight into the north side of the Empire State Building, near the 79th floor.

Upon impact, the plane's jet fuel exploded, filling the interior of the building with flames all the way down to the 75th floor and sending flames out of the hole the plane had ripped open in the building's side. One engine from the plane went straight through the building and landed in a penthouse apartment across the street. Other plane parts ended up embedded in and on top of nearby buildings. The other engine snapped an elevator cable while at least one woman was riding in the elevator car. The emergency auto brake saved the woman from crashing to the bottom, but the engine fell down the shaft and landed on top of it. Quick-thinking rescuers pulled the woman from the elevator, saving her life.

Since it was a Saturday, fewer workers than normal were in the building. Only 11 people in the building were killed, some suffering burns from the fiery jet fuel and others after being thrown out of the building. All 11 victims were workers from War Relief Services department of the National Catholic Welfare Conference, into the offices of which the plane had crashed. The three people on the plane were also killed.

An 18 foot by 20 foot hole was left in the side of the Empire State Building. Though its structural integrity was not affected, the crash did cause nearly $1 million in damages, about $10.5 million in today's money.
