Alfonse Capone had been a resident of Chicago since 1920. In that year, he arrived from his hometown of New York City at the invitation of Johnny Torrio, the leader of one of Chicago's largest and wealthiest criminal syndicates. Torrio employed Capone as a personal bodyguard before promoting him to manager of the Four Deuces Cafe on South Walbash. The profit realized by the various illegal enterprises carried on at this establishment - gambling, prostitution, and the sale of alcohol - enabled Torrio to expand business into the neighboring city of Cicero, a community just small enough to allow a complete takeover by anyone with the needed ambition and organization. To reward Al Capone, who proved himself adept at business and ready for any sort of murderous violence to discourage rivals, Torrio placed him in charge of the Cicero operations.
Despite his rapid rise in the Torrio organization, Capone managed to keep himself out of the headlines and relatively invisible to the public eye until September 20, 1926. On that day, members of a rival gang riding eight touring cars passed slowly in front of Capone's headquarters at the Hawthorne Hotel, raking the doors and windows with several hundred rounds from their Thompson submachine guns. The hotel suffered considerable damage, but Capone survived the attack without a scratch. From that point on, he was both famous and untouchable, the undisputed criminal king of the city.

MIAMI (AP) _ Tropical Storm Barry has swirled to life, packing 40 mph winds but posing no immediate threat to land, the National Weather Service said today.
At noon EDT, the center of the storm was near latitude 24.5 north, longtitude 55.5 west, or about 675 miles northeast of the northern Leeward Islands in the Lesser Antilles.
That was precisely the same position the storm held six hours earlier.
Satellite pictures indicated Barry became nearly stationary during the night, forecasters said. Some strengthening was expected before tonight, but the storm's steering currents have diminished and its movement was expected to be slow and erratic.
Barry, which had been moving northwest, turned sharply to the north Wednesday night and posed no immediate threat to land, said forecaster Hal Gerrish at the National Hurricane Center in suburban Coral Gables.
The storm formed as a depression earlier this week off west Africa. It became the Atlantic hurricane season's second named storm when its maximum sustained winds reached 39 mph Wednesday.
If winds reach 74 mph, it would become the first hurricane of the June- November season.
The season's first named storm was Allison, which caused widespread flood damage in Texas and Louisiana last month.

Astronauts Set Sights on Telescope

HOUSTON — The crew of the space shuttle Discovery on Wednesday flexed the spacecraft's robot arm, checked their spacesuits and said they were ready for a $350-million service call on the orbiting Hubble Space Telescope.
Final preparations were underway to retrieve the telescope early this morning and start a four-day series of spacewalks to refurbish and vastly improve it.
NASA astronaut Steve Hawley, who used the shuttle's robot arm in 1990 to gently lift the telescope into orbit, put the Canadian-built arm through its paces to make sure it was working properly. Hawley will reach out with the 50-foot arm shortly before midnight PST today to pluck the 12-ton observatory from orbit.
Meanwhile, mission commander Ken Bowersox and co-pilot Scott Horowitz fired maneuvering jets to keep the shuttle on course, and the mission's four spacewalkers checked out their gear.
Astronauts Mark Lee, Steve Smith, Greg Harbaugh and Joe Tanner floated in a jumble of spacesuit parts and toolboxes as they prepared their spacesuits and some of the 300 tools they will use to tinker with the telescope.
The four men are paired into two teams that will work outside on alternate days. The first spacewalk, by Lee and Smith, was scheduled for tonight.

Two of Discovery's astronauts are getting ready to venture into the payload bay this evening to perform the first of four spacewalks designed to service and upgrade the scientific capabilities of the Hubble Space Telescope.
Beginning between 9:30 and 10:30 p.m., STS-82 Payload Commander Mark Lee and Mission Specialist Steve Smith will spend six hours removing the Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph, replacing it with the new Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph, and swapping out the Faint Object Spectrograph with the more sophisticated Near Infrared Camera and Multi-Object Spectrometer.
The procedure for both change-outs calls for Smith, who will be riding the end of the robot arm, to individually extract the old instruments and temporarily stow them on the side of the payload bay. He will then extract each new instrument from its carrier for insertion into the place vacated by the old instrument. Throughout the procedure, Lee, recognizable by the red stripes on the arms and legs of his spacesuit, will assist while tethered to the shuttle. Each changeout is scheduled to take about two hours. The spacewalk is scheduled to begin around 10:20 P.M. CST, but could begin up to 45 minutes earlier if preparations run ahead of schedule.

The first spacewalk of the second servicing mission of the Telescope began at 10:34 p.m. Central time Thursday night when Lee and Smith switched their spacesuits over to battery power. The spacewalk was slightly delayed to enable ground controllers to assess the unexpected movement of one of Hubble's solar arrays, which slewed from a horizontal to a vertical position as Discovery's airlock was depressurized. The motion was created by an apparent gust of air from the airlock, but caused no damage to the array which was repositioned horizontally.

Astronauts Give Telescope Powerful New Eyes

HOUSTON - Working through cycles of night and day as they sped around Earth, astronauts today outfitted the Hubble Space Telescope with two powerful new eyes to enhance its view of the universe.
Spacewalkers Mark Lee and Steven Smith, in bulky space suits and breathing heavily, went about their business with a minimum of chatter. They removed two scientific instruments from the Hubble and replaced them with two others more powerful and up to date.
But there were a few asides as Lee and Smith worked in the shuttle's open cargo bay against the background of a blue Earth.
"Beautiful planet," said one of the astronauts.
"Beautiful telescope," said the other.
Theirs was a high-wire act. Smith stood on a platform attached to the shuttle crane; Lee, on a tether, used handrails to move around.
The spacewalk time was recorded officially as lasting 6 hours, 42 minutes. It was prolonged a few minutes when the astronauts encountered difficulty tightening two latching bolts on the door to the instrument compartment.
The two new components passed initial tests. They will be put to use after an alignment period lasting several weeks.
"You accomplished absolutely everything in the timeline . . . which is a great way to start," Mission Control's Jeff Hoffman told the spacewalkers.
"From an astronomical point of view it is almost impossible to imagine the Hubble Space Telescope being any better than it has been the last three years," he said. "You guys have made it so."
The instrument swap was the primary focus of the 10-day mission of space shuttle Discovery. The astronauts on Wednesday pulled the telescope, which had been orbiting Earth for seven years and nearly a billion miles, into the cargo bay and placed it on a rotating platform.
Three consecutive nights of spacewalks remain to upgrade nine other Hubble parts.
Lee was surprised to find that yellow paint from shuttle handrails rubbed off on his glove, and he warned his partner: "I wouldn't try to get some on you."

I just woke up a few minutes ago from I guess about 5 or 6 hours of sleep. I still feel exhausted. I am now wondering of the series of scenes and images in one dream was actually a representation of my flight into space as the commander of the first space shuttle launch.

There dream, though, seemed to be set on the USS Oliver Hazard Perry FFG-7. I am not certain how I linked that setting to FFG-7 but I am certain I was on a FFG-7 class ship and the notion lingers in my mind that it was the FFG-7.
In a somewhat confusing part, I walked out of a room with two people in it, where a junior person was getting a medal, for someone reason, as I was looking on, onto the weatherdeck. The person who had got the medal, which was a medal I can visualize but that I do not recognize, followed out onto the deck, I think. I can still visualize the calm blue water and also looking out onto the shore and the sky line of some city we were near but that I cannot recognize either after waking up. I do remember that I commented to the other person that I enjoyed being back out to sea, and I feel compelled to note that I might have said to him that I enjoyed especially being out to sea when we we just floating around, as we were then. Then, for some strange reason, I was over the edge of the deck and I was hanging onto the low railing, trying to keep myself from falling over into the water. But the gravity was strange and that might be why that part seems weird, in retrospect of the dream. I almost want to say that my feet were drifting upwards instead of downwards towards the ocean. I cannot remember what happened next. On one hand, it seems understand that I was hanging onto that railing but I am also somewhat baffled, as I ponder the dream after waking up, why I was even hanging from that railing in the first place.
I also remember something, vaguely, about Iceland, maybe. Something related to flying aircraft. Perhaps I was stationed at some point as a pilot in Iceland. I remember hearing some comments about someone's skills as an aircraft pilot. I remember something about looking at an aircraft runway and seeing the remains of the de-icer material they use. This all seemed to happen as I was sitting on the boat and I could actually see those other locations, such as the runway and the office, while I was in another far away location. That might be the result of remembering a past experience while having a dream. Something like that. A memory within a memory. I also remember sitting there in that boat that I was holding some kind of award plaque but I cannot remember what was writting on that award plaque. I think the award plaque had been given to Jim Lovell but I am not certain what that means. I can still visualize certain words on it but I cannot remember enough to describe those words. I remember that some letters were missing in the words.

In another dream I had a few hours earlier when I was asleep and that seemed to be a completely different dream from the one I was just writing about with the FFG-7, I seemed to have just completed the swim course of an Ironman triathlon. I do not recognize any of the surroundings though. I do remember it seemed odd that I told one of the race company employees what my finish time, which was odd. I also remember that I did not tell him my time until I had been out of the water for a few minutes and I wondered if my time of 62 or 63 minutes would have really been more like 59 minutes. I commented that I was surprised I had such a good swim time and that it was a good improvement over my last swim course time. So then I have that sense again that I was pondering these details as I later was sleeping and after that dream had ended. I have the sense of pondering over how my swim time and the Ironman CDA 2002 swim course was precisely the same as my swim time on the Ironman CDA 2003 swim course. I also awoke and think about the notion that Jean Enersen from KING-5 NEWS was at that Ironman triathlon and that detail seems relevant to me personally. After awaking, I have pondered over more details about those experiences I noted, such as that cover photo of the 2003 Athlete's Guide that seemed to show me from behind as several other racers with similar swimsuits were arrayed in front of me.

I "remember" one time I went in there to see Racheal but she wasn't there and I was disappointed.
