There will be general pleasure at the announcement of Princess Elizabeth's engagement to Lieutenant Philip Mountbatten. It is clearly a marriage of choice, not of arrangement. Princess Elizabeth has won a place of high affection in the hearts of the people. She is already doing the work of her station with the same skill and tact as her parents. All will wish her the full happiness that a marriage of affection can bring.

Of Lieutenant Mountbatten the public knows less because events have not brought him into the limelight. He has a British upbringing, he has close ties of relationship with the Royal Family, and he has had an excellent career in the British Navy. He has the aptitude to learn and to adapt himself to what must be an arduous social role.

The engagement of the Heiress Presumptive cannot, of course, be treated as a purely private matter, much as our modern ways of thought would like to have it so. It is, in the nature of things, a matter of State, just as is the marriage of a reigning sovereign.

Bill Clinton was born William Jefferson Blythe III on August 19, 1946, in Hope, Arkansas, three months after his father died in an automobile accident. In high school, he took the name of his step father, Roger Clinton of Hot Springs, Arkansas.

Bill Clinton graduated from Georgetown University and was awarded a Rhodes Scholarship to Oxford. He received a law degree from Yale in 1973.

An elderly veterinary assistant in a small Ukrainian town, Grinia, married to Natalia (he calls 'the old woman'), leaves his isba which has been destroyed by fire. The old couple choose to go to Siberia and move in with their daughter Nina rather than to settle down in Caucasus with their more balanced son. They are welcomed by Ivan, their son-in-law, a man ravaged by alcohol that his wife has left to live with a married man. Grinia and Natalia stay mainly to bring up Irena, their granddaughter. They soon become friends with the local miners and help Ivan get his feet back on the ground. The reformed drunkard falls in love with Galya, his young neighbor but, to his distress, Nina reappears, broken but cynical, after being dumped by her lover. Her parents side with Ivan and kick her out of home
