Subject: as of a drama
In regard to his companions his mind wavered between two opinions, according to his mood. Sometimes he inclined to believing them all heroes. In fact, he usually admired in secret the superior development of the higher qualities in others. He could conceive of men going very insignificantly about the world bearing a load of courage unseen, and although he had known many of his comrades through boyhood, he began to fear that his judgment of them had been blind. Then, in other moments, he flouted these theories, and assured him that his fellows were all privately wondering and quaking.
His emotions made him feel strange in the presence of men who talked excitedly of a prospective battle as of a drama they were about to witness, with nothing but eagerness and curiosity apparent in their faces. It was often that he suspected them to be liars.
He did not pass such thoughts without severe condemnation of himself. He dinned reproaches at times. He was convicted by himself of many shameful crimes against the gods of traditions.
In his great anxiety his heart was continually clamoring at what he considered the intolerable slowness of the generals. They seemed content to perch tranquilly on the river bank, and leave him bowed down by the weight of a great problem. He wanted it settled forthwith. He could not long bear such a load, he said. Sometimes his anger at the commanders reached an acute stage, and he grumbled about the camp like a veteran.

For jurors, Libby case may pivot on matters of memory
February 21, 2007 Richard B. Schmitt and Greg Miller Times Staff Writers
"Ask yourself if that pattern is just a convenient way of avoiding the truth," prosecutor Peter R. Zeidenberg said of versions of meetings that Libby recalled for investigators. Libby had "a great memory" when it came to remembering self-serving facts, the prosecutor said derisively.

After months of swimming and treading water in an ocean of despair, I have washed ashore. I am lost on an island, the Fantasy Island. "It's duh plane, Boss, duht net plane!" I am being forced to live out a fantasy of a suspect. It is quite the experience being a suspicious person walking around normal people as they go about their unknown existence, in my eyes looking like people that will probably go home somewhere, maybe even celebrating christmas, or some other peaceful activity, unalone.

Henry: [to Lucy] Good morning. Lucy! Lucy! Hey, hey, hey. Okay, I know this is hard for you to understand right now, but we are actually seeing each other.

On November 5, 1994, former President Ronald Reagan published a letter to the American people announcing his diagnosis of Alzheimer's disease.
My fellow Americans,
I have recently been told that I am one of the millions of Americans who will be afflicted with Alzheimer's disease.
Upon learning this news, Nancy and I had to decide whether as private citizens we would keep this a private matter or whether we would make this news known in a public way.
In the past, Nancy suffered from breast cancer and I had cancer surgeries. We found through our open disclosures we were able to raise public awareness. We were happy that as a result many more people underwent testing. They were treated in early stages and able to return to normal, healthy lives.
So now we feel it is important to share it with you. In opening our hearts, we hope this might promote greater awareness of this condition. Perhaps it will encourage a clear understanding of the individuals and families who are affected by it.
At the moment, I feel just fine. I intend to live the remainder of the years God gives me on this earth doing the things I have always done. I will continue to share life's journey with my beloved Nancy and my family. I plan to enjoy the great outdoors and stay in touch with my friends and supporters.
Unfortunately, as Alzheimer's disease progresses, the family often bears a heavy burden. I only wish there was some way I could spare Nancy from this painful experience. When the time comes, I am confident that with your help she will face it with faith and courage.
In closing, let me thank you, the American people, for giving me the great honor of allowing me to serve as your president. When the Lord calls me home, whenever that may be, I will leave the greatest love for this country of ours and eternal optimism for its future.
I now begin the journey that will lead me into the sunset of my life. I know that for America there will always be a bright dawn ahead.
Thank you, my friends.
Sincerely,
Ronald Reagan

Henry: Wait, uh... What is going on? I was kidding around with you! What's happening here? Is she crazy or something?
Sue: Lucy is a very special person. Very different from other people.
Henry: Okay.
Sue: About a year ago, Lucy was in a terrible car accident. She and her father went up North Shore to get a pineapple. Her Father broke some ribs, but Lucy suffered a serious head injury. She lost her short term memory.
Henry: So she can't remember anything?
Sue: No, no, no. She has all of her long term memory. That's a different part of the brain. Her whole life, up to the night before the accident, she remembers. She just can't retain any new information. It's like her slate gets wiped clean every night while she sleeps.
Henry: Hold on, here. This sounds like something I would tell a psycho girl so she would stop calling me. Am I the psycho girl?
Sue: I wish I was making this up! She has no memory that she ever met you.
Henry: What about the pineapple thing?
Sue: She says that every day, because each morning she wakes up thinking it's October thirteenth of last year. She comes here for breakfast because that's what she did on Sundays, and October thirteenth was a Sunday. She has no idea it's more than a year later.
Henry: She reads the newspaper though.
Sue: It's a special paper her Father puts on their porch every night. It's from the day of her accident. He got hundreds of them printed up. Lucy does the same thing everyday.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acetylcholine
Acetylcholine
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Acetylcholine (ACh, pron. ah-See-tul-KO-leen) is an organic, polyatomic cation that acts as a neurotransmitter in both the peripheral nervous system (PNS) and central nervous system (CNS) in many organisms, including humans.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neurotransmitter
Neurotransmitter
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Neurotransmitters are endogenous chemicals that transmit signals from a neuron to a target cell across a synapse. Neurotransmitters are packaged into synaptic vesicles clustered beneath the membrane in the axon terminal, on the presynaptic side of a synapse.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Synapse
Synapse
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
In the nervous system, a synapse is a structure that permits a neuron (or nerve cell) to pass an electrical or chemical signal to another cell (neural or otherwise). Santiago Ramón y Cajal proposed that neurons are not continuous throughout the body, yet still communicate with each other, an idea known as the neuron doctrine. The word "synapse" comes from "synaptein", which Sir Charles Scott Sherrington and colleagues coined from the Greek "syn-" ("together") and "haptein" ("to clasp").
Synapses are essential to neuronal function: neurons are cells that are specialized to pass signals to individual target cells, and synapses are the means by which they do so. At a synapse, the plasma membrane of the signal-passing neuron (the presynaptic neuron) comes into close apposition with the membrane of the target (postsynaptic) cell. Both the presynaptic and postsynaptic sites contain extensive arrays of molecular machinery that link the two membranes together and carry out the signaling process. In many synapses, the presynaptic part is located on an axon, but some presynaptic sites are located on a dendrite or soma. Astrocytes also exchange information with the synaptic neurons, responding to synaptic activity and, in turn, regulating neurotransmission.
There are two fundamentally different types of synapses:
In a chemical synapse, the presynaptic neuron releases a chemical called a neurotransmitter that binds to receptors located in the postsynaptic cell
Role in memory
Main article: Hebbian theory
It is widely accepted that the synapse plays a role in the formation of memory. As neurotransmitters activate receptors across the synaptic cleft, the connection between the two neurons is strengthened when both neurons are active at the same time, as a result of the receptor's signalling mechanisms. The strength of two connected neural pathways is thought to result in the storage of information, resulting in memory. This process of synaptic strengthening is known as long-term potentiation.
By altering the release of neurotransmitters, plasticity of synapses can be controlled in the presynaptic cell. The postsynaptic cell can be regulated by altering the function and number of its receptors. Changes in postsynaptic signaling are most commonly associated with N-methyl-d-aspartic acid receptor (NMDAR)-dependent long-term potentiation (LTP) and long-term depression (LTD), which are the most analyzed forms of plasticity at excitatory synapses.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Acetylcholinesterase
Acetylcholinesterase
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Acetylcholinesterase, also known as AChE or acetylhydrolase, is a serine protease that hydrolyzes the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. AChE is found at mainly neuromuscular junctions and cholinergic brain synapses, where its activity serves to terminate synaptic transmission. It belongs to carboxylesterase family of enzymes.
Biological function
During neurotransmission, ACh is released from the nerve into the synaptic cleft and binds to ACh receptors on the post-synaptic membrane, relaying the signal from the nerve. AChE, also located on the post-synaptic membrane, terminates the signal transmission by hydrolyzing ACh. The liberated choline is taken up again by the pre-synaptic nerve and ACh is synthetized by combining with acetyl-CoA through the action of choline acetyltransferase.

On June 21, 1975, history was made in Sierra Vista, history that would eventually spread around the world and give millions a way to zip through a meal. On that date, McDonald's restaurant opened the first ever drive-thru in Sierra Vista on Fry Boulevard just west of Coronado. The event brought incredible newspaper coverage and long lines of automobiles filled with customers excited that they no longer had to actually park, get out of the car, and go inside to eat.

We figured it out. She only sings
on days she meets you.
You're kidding me. That song?
That's Mom and Dad's song.
When her mom was alive,
Lucy would have me take that tape...
-...on every fishing trip I went on.
-Oh, yeah?
Yeah, she knew it would make me
miss her mom...
...and want to come home sooner.
I'm seeing a new side to you, sir.
I gotta tell you, it's grossing me out.
Let me ask you something.
What's in it for you?
What do you get out of this?
I don't know.
Wouldn't you want to spend
an hour a day with that?
Actually, no. She sings like shit.
-What?
-Can I ask you guys something?
What'll happen down the line?
Someday she'll wake up...
...look in the mirror and notice
she aged years overnight.
You know something, Henry?
I worry about that
every damn day of my life.

SECNAV INSTRUCTION 1650.1H
From: Assistant Secretary of the Navy (Manpower and Reserve Affairs)
Subj: NAVY AND MARINE CORPS AWARDS MANUAL
1. Purpose. To provide guidance and regulations concerning awards available for recognizing individuals and units in the Naval Service.
2. Navy Cross
a. Authorization. 10 U.S.C. S6242.
b. Eligibility Requirements
(1) Awarded to individuals who, while serving in any capacity with the Navy or Marine Corps, distinguish themselves by extraordinary heroism, not justifying the award of the Medal of Honor.
(a) While engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States;
(b) While engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force; or
(c) While serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in an armed conflict against an opposing armed force, in which the United States is not a belligerent party.
(2) To warrant this distinctive decoration, the act or execution of duty must be performed in the presence of great danger, or at great personal risk, and must be performed in such a manner as to set individuals apart from their shipmates or fellow Marines. An accumulation of minor acts of heroism normally does not justify the award. The high standards SECNAVINST 1650.1H demanded must be borne in mind when recommending the award.

Chapter 8
After a time he began to sidle near to the youth, and in a diffident way try to make him a friend. His voice was gentle as a girl's voice and his eyes were pleading. The youth saw with surprise that the soldier had two wounds, one in the head, bound with a blood-soaked rag, and the other in the arm, making that member dangle like a broken bough.
After they had walked together for some time the tattered man mustered sufficient courage to speak. "Was pretty good fight, wa'n't it?" he timidly said. The youth, deep in thought, glanced up at the bloody and grim figure with its lamblike eyes. "What?"
"Was pretty good fight, wa'n't it?"
"Yes," said the youth shortly. He quickened his pace.
But the other hobbled industriously after him. There was an air of apology in his manner, but he evidently thought that he needed only to talk for a time, and the youth would perceive that he was a good fellow.
"Was pretty good fight, wa'n't it?" he began in a small voice, and the he achieved the fortitude to continue. "Dern me if I ever see fellers fight so. Laws, how they did fight! I knowed th' boys 'd like it when they onct got square at it. Th' boys ain't had no fair chanct up t' now, but this time they showed what they was. I knowed it 'd turn out this way. Yeh can't lick them boys. No, sir! They 're fighters, they be."
He breathed a deep breath of humble admiration. He had looked at the youth for encouragement several times. He received none, but gradually he seemed to get absorbed in his subject.
"I was talkin' 'cross pickets with a boy from Georgie, onct, an' that boy, he ses, 'Your fellers 'll all run like hell when they onct hearn a gun,' he ses. 'Mebbe they will,' I ses, 'but I don't b'lieve none of it,' I ses; 'an' b'jiminey,' I ses back t' 'um, 'mebbe your fellers 'll all run like hell when they onct hearn a gun,' I ses. He larfed. Well, they didn't run t' day, did they, hey? No, sir! They fit, an' fit, an' fit."
His homely face was suffused with a light of love for the army which was to him all things beautiful and powerful.
After a time he turned to the youth. "Where yeh hit, ol' boy?" he asked in a brotherly tone.
The youth felt instant panic at this question, although at first its full import was not borne in upon him.
"What?" he asked.
"Where yeh hit?" repeated the tattered man.

Admiral Al Calavicci: Well, you're here. Which is a biggie. I mean, that's a first. It's Nobel Prize time. You should be proud of that.
Dr. Sam Beckett: And?
Admiral Al Calavicci: And, uh, uh, we're experiencing technical difficulties in, uh, retrieving you.
Dr. Sam Beckett: Ha. That's great, Al. I wake up in '56 with a memory like Swiss cheese and you're experiencing technical difficulties? Whose brain child is this? Yours?
Admiral Al Calavicci: No. Not mine. I haven't got a lot of time. I have to find out which of these scenarios can explain why we couldn't retrieve you this morning.
Dr. Sam Beckett: You tried?
Admiral Al Calavicci: Of course we tried. You wouldn't leave.
Dr. Sam Beckett: So now it's my fault.
Admiral Al Calavicci: Possibly. Did you tell anyone that you're not Tom Stratton?
Dr. Sam Beckett: Sort of.
Admiral Al Calavicci: Oh, Sam. Retrieving you is dependent upon everyone here believing that you're the person that you replaced.
Dr. Sam Beckett: They didn't believe me. How could they? I look in the mirror and I don't believe me.
Admiral Al Calavicci: Well, that's to be expected. To us, Tom looks just like you.

The notion of performing a back-flip was in my mind as I woke up a short time ago. For the past few days, I have been thinking that I the kicker for a professional football team, at some point in the late 1970's and early 1980's, and I did a back-flip on the field after I kicked a field goal during one of the professional football games I was in. I might have been a regular starter for one season of that professional football team. All I had to do was to show up at the games and suit up with the rest of the team.
JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 03/26/08 7:15 AM
The notion in the dream was as though I overheard one person comment "And who could ever forget that backflip?" to another person, in regards to a backflip I did one time. There were other details in the dream but most are not very clear in terms of what they could mean. There was a football aspect to it though but I don't think that was the backflip the person was refering to.

TWO FLAGS WEST (1950)
At a prison camp at Rock Island, Illinois, in the autumn of 1864, Captain Mark Bradford, who became the camp commander after injuries ended his fighting career, offers Confederate prisoners the chance to be paroled. In order to be freed, the prisoners must agree to serve as Union soldiers and protect frontier forts against Indians. The Confederates' leader, Colonel Clay Tucker of Georgia, knows that there will be no further exchanges of prisoners and so considers the offer. After seeing one of his men die in the prison, Clay gets Mark's word that the men will not be asked to fight against their own, then breaks a tie vote among the prisoners in favor of going. Clay is demoted to 2nd lieutenant, and the unit joins the 3rd Cavalry of the Army of the Republic at Fort Thorn, New Mexico. Fort Thorn is commanded by the stern, rebel-hating Major Henry Kenniston, who is frustrated that an injury suffered during his first battle has kept him from the war.
