Death Race 2000

So that must have been it. I must have been visiting Ashdown in 1992. And these details I write of now in this section support my notion that I made no visits to Ashdown after Memorial Day 1990 and before about March 1992.

After waking up this morning, the deciding factor is that I was driving that 1990 Mazda RX-7 and I established the timeframe in the post here before this one.

The compelling detail is that I do not ever recall driving that Mazda RX-7 across country from South Carolina to Ashdown Arkansas. I believe that is a memorable detail because the drive is long and boring and I made that drive several times from South Carolina when I was in the US Navy in the 1980s. The last time I made the drive from Charleston South Carolina to Ashdown Arkansas was sometime around July or August 1988. I took leave twice after we returned from the Persian Gulf and I remember driving back there especially that second time. That was the last time I took leave before my six-year enlistment ended in 1990.

So my memory, as described in more detail in the post here before this one, and posted for a specific reason, of driving my red 1990 Mazda RX-7 while visiting Ashdown Arkansas would seem to must have been about March 1992. I don't recall the precise date and I am just referring to the details of the timeframe I established here in post immediately before this one and of how my employer had a two-year computer maintenance contract with First Federal in Greenville South Carolina.

Acting on a complaint by leaders of an Indian tribe who say a private company had illegally taken fossils from tribal land, federal agents in South Dakota have seized the largest and best-preserved tyrannosaurus rex fossil ever found.

The seizure ignited a struggle involving the Justice Department, Indian leaders, scientists, a large fossil-dealer and many dinosaur enthusiasts.

The dispute centers on ownership of the remains of the dinosaur, which in life would have been more than 50 feet long.

Though such fossils are worth nothing in the ground, an important fossil like the South Dakota dinosaur could bring several million dollars, particularly from a museum abroad, paleontologists said.

More important, from the paleontologists' point of view, the specimen offers rare opportunities to learn more about the tyrannosaurus rex. Though care was taken in packing the bones, they said, they feared the bones might be damaged in the move.

Early Thursday, 30 FBI officials, under orders from U.S. Attorney Kevin Schieffer, sealed off the premises of the Black Hills Institute of Geological Research in Hill City, S.D.

They packed up the gigantic bones along with the company's files, photographs and specimens relating to the dinosaur.

Although paleontologists frequently criticize commercialized fossil collecting, many prominent paleontologist say the Black Hills Institute takes great care to preserve scientific assets and makes them available to scholars.

WASHINGTON -- A proud NASA showed off the first pictures from the restored Hubble Space Telescope today and pronounced the instrument fixed.

"The trouble with Hubble is over," Sen. Barbara Mikulski, D-Md., said at a news conference called by NASA to display the first pictures taken by the telescope. The Hubble was outfitted with a new main camera and improved optics for other instruments during a repair mission by spacewalking astronauts in December.

"The wonders we will show you today and the new discoveries we anticipate in the future are examples of exploration at its best," NASA Administrator Daniel Goldin said.

Ruling gives Microsoft an edge

WASHINGTON - The U.S. Supreme Court decisively rejected a speedy review of the Microsoft antitrust case yesterday, leaving a lower court to decide whether to uphold a judge's landmark order to split the world's largest software maker in two.

The 8-1 ruling is likely to delay a final decision for as long as two years and marks a significant setback for the Justice Department and 19 states, which had sought to put their case against Microsoft on the fast track. It was the first time in 16 years that the U.S. solicitor general had asked the high court for an expedited antitrust review and the first time the justices said no.

The decision elated officials at Microsoft, which has fared well in the lower court before.

"We're pleased that the judicial process is moving forward, and we look forward to a speedy resolution to the case," said Chief Executive Officer Steve Ballmer, who was in San Francisco for the unveiling of another piece of Microsoft's business strategy.


Some legal observers said the Supreme Court's decision could give Microsoft a critical edge. Instead of one year under an expedited review, it may be that the appeals court will take a year to hear the case and the Supreme Court would take another year.
