USS Enterprise (CVN-65)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

USS Enterprise (CVN-65), formerly CVA(N)-65, is a retired US Navy aircraft carrier. She was the world's first nuclear-powered aircraft carrier

Enterprise is a commissioned navy ship, but is inactive.

Enterprise is also the only aircraft carrier to house more than two nuclear reactors, having an eight-reactor propulsion design, with each A2W reactor taking the place of one of the conventional boilers in earlier constructions. She is the only carrier with four rudders, two more than other classes, and features a more cruiser-like hull.

Enterprise also had a phased array radar system known as SCANFAR. SCANFAR was intended to be better at tracking multiple airborne targets than conventional rotating antenna radars. SCANFAR consisted of two radars, the AN/SPS-32 and the AN/SPS-33. The AN/SPS-32 was a long-range air search and target acquisition radar developed by Hughes for the US Navy. The AN/SPS-32 operated together with the AN/SPS-33, which was the square array used for 3D tracking, into one system. It was installed on only two vessels, Enterprise and the cruiser USS Long Beach, placing a massive power drain on the ship’s electric system. The technology of the AN/SPS-32 was based on vacuum tubes and the system required constant repairs. The SPS-32 was a phased array radar which had a range of 400 nautical miles against large targets, and 200 nautical miles against small, fighter-size targets. These early phased arrays, replaced around 1980, were responsible for the distinctive square-looking island.

Spock Prime: What if I told you that your transwarp theory was correct, that is is indeed possible to beam onto a ship that is traveling at warp speed?

Scotty: I think if that equation had been discovered, I'd have heard about it.

Spock Prime: The reason you haven't heard of it, Mr. Scott, is because you haven't discovered it yet.

Scotty: I'm s... Wha... It... Are you from the future?

James T. Kirk: Yeah, he is. I'm not.

Scotty: Well, that's brilliant. Do they still have sandwiches there?

NANCY: Must you keep it so terribly hot in here?

COCHRANE: The temperature's a constant seventy two degrees. Let me get you something cool to drink.

MCCOY: Do you feel hot?

NANCY: I feel infuriated, deeply put upon, and absolutely outraged.

MCCOY: It was quite a hike here. You're tired. Just take it easy for a while.

NANCY: I'll rest later, Doctor.

MCCOY: Temperature, Captain. First sign.

KIRK: Yes, I know. It means we're running out of time.

SPOCK: Captain, Doctor.

(From the doorway, the three see a swirly thing which then disappears. Cochrane comes in with a tray of drinks.)

KIRK: What was that?

COCHRANE: Well, sometimes the light plays tricks on you. You'd be surprised what I've imagined I've seen around here sometimes.

SPOCK: We imagined nothing, Mister Cochrane. There was an entity out there and I suspect it was the same entity which brought us here. Please explain.

COCHRANE: There's nothing to explain.

(He hands a drink to Nancy.)

NANCY: Thank you.

KIRK: You'll find I have a very low tolerance level where the safety of my people are concerned. We find you out here, where no human has any business being. We were virtually hijacked in space and brought here. Now I'm not just requesting an explanation, Mister. I'm demanding one.

COCHRANE: All right. It was the Companion.

KIRK: The what?

COCHRANE: That's what I call it. As a matter of fact, Captain, I didn't crash here. I was brought here in my disabled ship. I was almost dead. The Companion saved my life.

SPOCK: You were injured?

COCHRANE: I was dying, Mister Spock.

KIRK: You seem perfectly all right now. What was the matter?

COCHRANE: I was an old man.

KIRK: You were what?

COCHRANE: Well, I don't know how it did it, but the Companion rejuvenated me, made me young again, like I am now.

SPOCK: I prefer to reserve judgment on that part of your story, sir. Meanwhile, would you please explain exactly what this Companion of yours is?

COCHRANE: I told you, I don't know what it is. It exists, it lives, and I can communicate with it.

MCCOY: That's a pretty far out story.

KIRK: Mister Cochrane, do you have a first name?

COCHRANE: Zefram.

KIRK: Zefram Cochrane of Alpha Centuri, the discoverer of the space warp?

COCHRANE: That's right, Captain.

Obama rips Republicans, raises big bucks for Murray in 4-hour Seattle stop

By Jonathan Martin

Seattle Times staff reporter

President Obama flashed into Seattle on Tuesday in full campaign mode, encouraging voters to contrast his administration's 18-month record with the "snake oil being peddled" by Republicans.

Obama raised $1.3 million for U.S. Sen. Patty Murray and the state Democratic Party in two fundraisers, one a boisterous rally, the other an intimate, $10,000-a-person dinner at a waterfront mansion.

NUREMBERG

SPEECH OF SEPTEMBER 14, 1936

I CAN come to no terms with a Weltanschhauung [bolshevism] which everywhere as its first act after gaining power is - not the liberation of the working people - but the liberation of the scum of humanity, the asocial creatures concentrated in the prisons - and then the letting loose of these wild beasts upon the terrified and helpless world about them....

Bolshevism turns flourishing countrysides into sinister wastes of ruins; National Socialism transforms a Reich of destruction and misery into a healthy State and a flourishing economic life....

Russia planned a world revolution and German workmen would be used but as cannon-fodder for bolshevist imperialism. But we National Socialists do not wish that our military resources should be employed to impose by force on other peoples what those peoples themselves do not want. Our army does not swear on oath that it will with bloodshed extend the National Socialist idea over other peoples, but that it will with its own blood defend the National Socialist idea and thereby the German Reich, its security and freedom, from the aggression of other peoples.... The German people as soldiers is one of the best peoples in the world: It would have become a veritable 'Fight to the Death Brigade' for the bloody purposes of these international disseminators of strife. We have removed this danger, through the National Socialist Revolution, from our own people and from other peoples....

These are only some of the grounds for the antagonisms which separate us from communism. I confess: these antagonisms cannot be bridged. Here are really two worlds which do but grow further apart from each other and can never unite. When in an English newspaper a Parliamentarian complains that we wish to divide Europe into two parts, then unfortunately we are bound to inform this Robinson Crusoe living on his happy British island that - however unwelcome it may be - this division is already an accomplished fact.... That one should refuse to see a thing does not mean that it is not there. For many a year in Germany I have been laughed to scorn as a prophet; for many a year my warnings and my prophecies were regarded as the illusions of a mind diseased....

http://www.hitler.org/speeches/10-06-39.html

BERLIN, REICHSTAG

SPEECH OF OCTOBER 6, 1939

IT WAS a fateful hour, on the first of September of this year, when you met here as representatives of the German people. I had to inform you then of serious decisions which had been forced upon us as a result of the intransigent and provocative action of a certain State.

Since then five weeks have gone by. I have asked you to come here today in order to give you an account of what has passed, the necessary insight into what is happening at present and, so far as that is possible, into the future as well.

For the last two days our towns and villages have been decorated with flags and symbols of the new Reich. Bells are ringing to celebrate a great victory, which, of its kind, is unique in history. A State of no less than 36,000,000 inhabitants, with an army of almost fifty infantry and cavalry divisions, took up arms against us. Their arms were far-reaching, their confidence in their ability to crush Germany knew no bounds.

After one week of fighting there could no longer be any doubt as to the outcome. Whenever Polish troops met German units, they were driven back or dispersed. Poland's ambitious strategy for a great offensive against the territory of the Reich collapsed within the first forty-eight hours of the campaign. Death-defying in attack, advancing at an unconquerable rate of progress, infantry, armored detachments, air force and units of the navy were soon dictating the course of events.

They were masters of the situation throughout the campaign. In a fortnight's time the major part of the Polish Army was either scattered, captured, or surrounded. In the meantime, however, the German Army had covered distances and occupied regions which twenty-five years ago would have taken over fourteen months to conquer.

Even though a number of peculiarly gifted newspaper strategists in other parts of the world attempted to describe the pace at which this campaign progressed as not coming up to Germany's expectations, we ourselves all know that in all history there has scarcely been a comparable military achievement.

That the last remnants of the Polish Army were able to hold out in Warsaw, Modlin, and on Hela Peninsula until October 1 was not due to their prowess in arms, but only to our cool thinking and our sense of responsibility.

I forbade the sacrifice of more human lives than was absolutely necessary. That is to say, I deliberately released the German Supreme Command from adherence to a principle still observed in the Great War demanding that for the sake of prestige certain objectives must under all circumstances be reached within a certain time limit.

Everything which it is imperative to do will be done regardless of sacrifice, but what can be avoided will not be done.

There would have been no difficulty for us in breaking the resistance of Warsaw between the 10th and 12th of September, just as we finally broke it September 25-27, only that in the first place I wanted to spare German lives and in the second place I still clung to the hope, misdirected though it was, that the Polish side might for once be guided by responsible common sense instead of by irresponsible lunacy. But in this instance we were once more confronted with the spectacle which we had witnessed before on the largest possible scale.

The attempt to convince the responsible Polish command - in so far as it existed - that it was futile and in fact insane to attempt resistance, especially in a city of more than a million inhabitants, proved entirely fruitless. A 'generalissimo,' who himself took to inglorious flight, forced upon the capital of his country a resistance which could never lead to anything but its destruction.

THE PRESIDENT: Thank you! It is good to be in Washington! (Applause.) It is good to be in Washington -- it is good to be in Seattle.

As I look out on the crowd, I see a lot of people who helped so much during the course of the campaign. You were with us when we were up and you were with us when we were down. But you always were there, understanding that we were at a critical point in our history and we needed to make some fundamental changes in order to deliver that promise to the next generation. And so, to everybody here who supported me during my campaign and helped me become the President, thank you so much for your outstanding efforts. (Applause.)

I am here to say thank you not only for my own election but for having the wisdom to send Patty Murray to Washington. (Applause.) And when this state sent Patty to the Senate, she wasn’t one of these lifelong politicians who wanted the job or the position for a fancy title or a nice office. She was a self-described mom in tennis shoes who was just looking to help a few people solve a few problems. And all these years later, Patty is that same person -– except she’s helped a whole lot of people solve a whole lot of big problems.

When I was in the Senate, I sat next to Patty on the Veterans Affairs Committee. And I can tell you there is no fiercer advocate for our veterans than Patty Murray. Nobody. (Applause.) Whether it was keeping three VA hospitals open here in Washington, or helping a World War II veteran break through the bureaucracy so he could receive his Purple Heart, no problem is too big, no problem is too small for Patty to fight for you.

The American Presidency Project

Ronald Reagan

XL President of the United States: 1981 - 1989

Remarks at the Dedication Ceremony for New Facilities at the National Security Agency at Fort Meade, Maryland

September 26, 1986

I'm delighted to be here today—and by the way, I mentioned to General Odom and Bill Casey the unseasonably warm weather predictions for today, but they told me to wear my trench coat anyway. [Laughter] And then when I asked for directions to this great new building, all they would say is: "Mr. President, leave the White House, go to 17th and K, and wait for the phone to ring." [Laughter]

I even offered to bring over some White House cuff links as souvenirs for all of you, but I was told you prefer the NSA cuff links—you can tune in the Redskins game. [Laughter] But, ladies and gentlemen, I didn't come here today to tell you a lot of "speak into the potted plant" jokes. I do have some fairly high-grade intelligence, though. We've just learned that from now on KGB agents have been ordered to do all their work in groups of three: One agent to take notes and write the report and the other two to keep an eye on the intellectual. [Laughter]

But if I may be serious, I do have another story for you today, and it goes like this. In the spring of 1942, shortly after Pearl Harbor, the Japanese were planning a decisive naval engagement that would crush American power in the Pacific and open Hawaii and our west coast to attack. To accomplish this, the Japanese assembled the most powerful armada in history. Against their cruisers, battleships, and carriers, the United States could assemble really only three aircraft carriers—one of which was still badly damaged from the Battle of the Coral Sea. And aware that the Japanese were preparing for this decisive battle, the Commander of the Pacific Fleet, Chester Nimitz, knew the odds against him and understood that his only chance of victory lay in the skill and daring of his outnumbered sailors and fliers—and in his superior intelligence services.

Although aware of Japanese preparations, the Americans did not have the answer to the all-important question of where the Japanese would attack. A young naval officer who had, with a small group of cryptographers, been monitoring Japanese transmissions, successfully deciphered their code. From his intercepts, Commander Joseph Rochefort knew the target of the planned attack was a place the Japanese were calling "AF." And in his own mind, he felt certain he knew what AF was—an island not far from Hawaii; it was called Midway.

But as always, there were those who dismissed him, who scoffed at the notion that intelligence based on radio or electronic data could be accurate or reliable. Fortunately, for America and for freedom, Admiral Nimitz had no such doubts.

THE PRESIDENT: Thank you! It is good to be in Washington! (Applause.) It is good to be in Washington -- it is good to be in Seattle.

So it turns out, lo and behold, all three U.S. automakers are now operating at a profit for the first time in years. (Applause.) They’ve got the strongest job growth in more than a decade. And when I visited -- I went to a Chrysler plant in Detroit. This had been shut -- it was on the verge of being shut down. And I had a chance to meet 14 workers who had just won the lottery. (Laughter.) Now, you would think they might want to retire. But most of them had stayed on -– because they love their job and they’re proud of what they do.

In fact, one guy had used some of his winnings to buy a car -- a Jeep Grand Cherokee -- from the plant where he worked. He had helped build that car. He bought it for his wife, then bought a whole bunch of American flags for his hometown because he loves his country. He loves his company and he loves his co-workers. And it captured the essence of who we are, coming out of tough times. Do not bet against the American worker. Do not bet against American businesses. Don't bet against American ingenuity. (Applause.)

That's the message that he was sending, and that's the message I want to send to you. We can compete. But we’re going to have to take some steps to deal with longstanding problems -- not ignore them, not pretend that they don't exist, to confront them.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: http://hvom.blogspot.com/2012/05/grand-cherokee.html

I could have sworn I wrote once about the day I purchased a lease for that white 1995 Jeep Grand Cherokee. I can't find a reference to that though. I can still visualize that day fairly well and I remember a lot of the details. I remember that day was very hot in Charlotte North Carolina and the Jeep had an instrument panel in the center of the roof towards the front windshield and there was a digital gauge with the outside temperature on it and I can recall that day got up to 100 degrees Fahrenheit.

I was looking for that reference because I couldn't believe that I was right about the day I bought that vehicle. I feel certain that day was 4 July 1995. What I recalled about it was that was Independence Day and that must have been the year 1995.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: July 25, 2006

I also noted that it was exactly a month later when I started that contract job at Microsoft in 1995. I think it was the previous year I drove back to Ashdown for her birthday.

The primary objectives of this flight were to rendezvous and perform the first docking between the Space Shuttle and the Russian Space Station Mir on June 29.

I just realized that the Jeep Grand Cherokee I used to have could represent the space shuttle. Something about that lift gate on the back makes me think about the cargo hold on the shuttle. And that J.G.C. was white too. Could 1995 be the first time I was the commander of a shuttle mission?

MISSION CONTROL CENTER

STS-71 Status Report #14

Tuesday, July 4, 1995, 5 a.m. CDT

Atlantis was scheduled to separate from Russia's Mir space station at 6:10 this morning, concluding the historic mission that saw an American and Russian spacecraft commander shake hands in orbit for the first time in 20 years.

As the Atlantis crew was awakened to a celebration of America's 219th birthday and the sounds of "America the Beautiful," their colleagues on board the Mir space station were well into procedures to deactivate some of the station's systems.

Flying free of Mir for the first time in five days, Atlantis is functioning virtually trouble- free on its 14th journey in space.

U.S., Russian Spacecraft Go Separate Ways : Docking: Shuttle Atlantis ends historic 5-day linkup with space station. It leaves with three crewmen who have been in orbit since mid-March.

July 05, 1995 from Associated Press

HOUSTON — Astronauts and cosmonauts watched their ships part and fade into the blackness of space Tuesday in an orbital pirouette that ended five days of flying as a single craft.

"We're just shaking our heads at how quickly this has all gone by," said Charles Precourt, pilot of the U.S. space shuttle Atlantis. "It's as if it were a dream, that we didn't really live it, it happened so fast. . . . But what a great time, what a great effort."

For half an hour, three craft hovered a few hundred feet from one another while hurtling around Earth at 5 miles a second: The Russian Soyuz capsule with two cosmonauts, Atlantis with eight passengers, and the temporarily unmanned Russian space station Mir.

Both crews recorded the historic moment on video and film, but the sun's glare spoiled many of the pictures.

"It's been an inspiring visit with our neighbors in space. We look forward to returning," said NASA's Mission Control.

"We agree with that. . . . We agree 100%," Atlantis' commander, Robert L. (Hoot) Gibson, replied as he backed the shuttle away from the station. "In one of the simulations, the words 'cosmic ballet' came to mind, and I guess that's where we are now."

For nearly 1 1/2 hours, Atlantis flew around Mir for picture-taking, then fired its thrusters 245 miles above South America to move into its own track.

"Bye-bye," Solovyev said softly.

Atlantis launched with seven occupants and is scheduled to land Friday at Florida's Kennedy Space Center

And their agenda was pretty straightforward. You remember it. You voted against it. (Laughter.) That's why I’m President. (Laughter and applause.)

You just saw Marcelas Owens come up here. What a wonderful young man with a powerful story. Marcelas Owens, 11-Year-Old Whose Mother Died Without Health Insurance: 'Get The Health Care Bill Passed'

First Posted: 05/11/10 06:12 AM ET Updated: 05/25/11 04:50 PM ET

Marcelas Owens, an 11-year-old from Seattle, headlined a press conference with Senate Democratic leadership on Thursday, telling a packed room of reporters that he wanted the president and Congress to come together and pass health insurance reform.

"I am here because of my mom," said Owens. "My mom was diagnosed with pulmonary hypertension in 2006. She missed so much work she lost her job. And when my mom lost her job, she lost her health care. And losing her health care ended up costing her her life."

He continued, "I don't want any other kids to go through the pain that our family has gone through. My grandma and I want Barack Obama and Congress and everybody to come together and to help get the health care bill passed."

Sen. Patty Murray (D-Wash.) has been telling her constituent's story for months, most notably at the White House health care summit in February. Speaking before Owens, she recalled how she met him at a rally in Washington.

"I went to that rally and, after I spoke, I turned around and there was this little boy looking right straight up at me with his big brown eyes," she said. "And he said to me, 'You can't let anybody die like my mom did.'"

BERLIN, RHEINMETALL-BORSIG WORKS

SPEECH OF DECEMBER 10, 1940

'And now my fellow-countrymen, let us think of the sacrifices. For the individual, they are very great. The woman who has lost her husband has lost her all, and the same is true of the child that has lost its father. The mother who has sacrificed her child, and the betrothed or the sweetheart who have been parted from loved ones never to see them again have all made great sacrifices. However, if we add all these losses together and compare them with the sacrifices of the Great War, then - however great they may be for the individual - they are incomparably small. Consider that we have not nearly so many dead as Germany had in 1870-71 in the struggle against France. We have broken the ring encircling Germany by these sacrifices. The number of wounded is also extremely small, merely a fraction of what was expected.

For all this, our thanks are due to our magnificent army, inspired by a new spirit and into which the spirit of our national community has also penetrated. The army now really knows for what it is fighting. We owe thanks to our soldiers for their tremendous achievements. But the German soldier gives thanks to you, the munitions workers, for forging the weapons for his use. For this is the first time that he has gone into battle without feeling that he was inferior to the enemy in numbers or that his weapons were of poorer quality. Our weapons were better in every respect.

That is your doing; the result of your workmanship, of your industry, your capacity, your devotion. Millions of German families still have their breadwinners today and will have them in the future, innumerable fathers and mothers still have their sons - and their thanks are due to you, my munitions workers. You have forged for them the weapons with which they were able to go forward to victory, weapons which today give them so much confidence that everyone knows we are not only the best soldiers in the world but that we also have the best weapons in the world. Not only is this true today; it will be more so in the future.

That is the difference between today and the Great War. But not only that. Above all, this time the German soldier is not short of ammunition.

So, basically, what this campaign is coming down to is that between now and November they’re betting that you will all come down with a case of amnesia. (Laughter.) They’re basically -- they’re counting on the fact that you don’t remember; that you’re going to forget what happened when they were in charge for the last -- for eight years.

They spent almost a decade driving the economy into a ditch. I mean, think about it if this -- if the economy was a car and they drove it into the ditch. (Laughter.) And so me and Patty, and a bunch of others, we go down there and we put on our boots and we’re pushing and shoving. And it’s muddy and there are bugs and we’re sweating -- (laughter) -- and shoving, pushing hard. And they’re all standing there sipping Slurpees -- (laughter) -- and watching and -- “you’re not pushing hard enough.” “That’s not the right way to push.” (Pretends to sip a Slurpee.) Chapter 13

Visitors

Her route this day was down state Route 3, then across a secondary road. That brought her out onto Ritchie Highway, six miles above the Giant Steps Nursery School. She caught the light just right and took the turn in second gear, working quickly up to third, then fourth. The feline growl of the six-cylinder engine reached through the sound insulation as a gentle purr. Cathy Ryan loved her Porsche. She'd never driven anything else until after she was married – a station wagon was useful for shopping and family drives, unfortunately – and wondered what she'd do when her second child arrived. That, she sighed, would be a problem. It depended on where the sitter was, she decided. Or maybe she could finally convince Jack to get a nanny. Her husband was a little too working-class in that respect. He'd resisted the idea of hiring a part-time maid to help with the housework – that was all the more crazy since Cathy knew her husband tended to be something of a slob, slow to hang up his clothing. Getting the maid had changed that a little. Now, nights before the maid was due in, Jack scurried around picking things up so that she wouldn't think the Ryans were a family of slovens. Jack could be so funny. Yes, she thought, we'll get a nanny. After all, Jack's a knight now. Cathy smiled at the traffic. Pushing him in the right direction wouldn't be all that hard. Jack was very easy to manipulate. She changed lanes and darted past a dump truck in third gear. The Porsche made it so easy to accelerate around things.

She turned right into the Giant Steps parking lot two minutes later. The sports car bumped over the uneven driveway and she brought it to a stop in the usual spot. Cathy locked the car on getting out, of course. Her Porsche was six years old, but meticulously maintained. It had been her present to herself on getting through her intern year at Hopkins. There wasn't a single scratch on the British Racing Green finish, and only a Hopkins parking sticker marred the gleaming chrome bumper.

"Mommy!" Sally met her at the door.

Cathy bent to pick her up. It was getting harder to bend over, and harder still to stand up with Sally around her neck. She hoped that their daughter would not feel threatened by the arrival of the baby. Some kids were, she knew, but she had already explained to the little girl what was going on, and Sally seemed to like the idea of a new brother or sister.

"So what did my big girl do today?" Dr. Ryan asked. Sally liked being called a Big Girl, and this was Cathy's subterfuge for ensuring that sibling rivalry would be minimized by the arrival of a "little" boy or girl.

Sally wriggled free to drop back to the floor, and held up a finger painting done on what looked like wide-carriage computer paper. It was a credible abstract work of purple and orange. Together, mother and daughter went to the back and got her coat and lunch box. Cathy made sure that Sally's coat was zipped and the hood up – it was only a few degrees above freezing outside, and they didn't want Sally to get another cold. It took a total of five minutes from the time Cathy stopped the car until she was back out the door, walking toward it again.

She didn't really notice the routineness of her daily schedule. Cathy unlocked the door, got Sally into her seat, and made sure the seat belt was fastened snugly before closing and locking the door and going around to the left side of the car.

She looked up briefly. Across Ritchie Highway was a small shopping center, a 7-Eleven Store, a cleaners, a video store, and a hardware dealer. There was a blue van parked at the 7-Eleven again. She'd noticed it twice the previous week. Cathy shrugged it off. 7-Eleven was a convenience store, and lots of people made it a regular stop on the way home.

CSP honors 7-Eleven's Joe DePinto as 2011 Retail Leader of the Year

By ANGEL ABCEDE

CSP Daily News October 12, 2011

CHICAGO -- Chicago is Joe DePinto's kind of town. It's where he grew up, in suburban Des Plaines, Ill. And with a rendering of the city's broad-shouldered skyline as a backdrop, the president and CEO of 7-Eleven accepted the award for CSP magazine's Retail Leader of the Year earlier this month before about 400 industry leaders, spouses and supplier partners.

The 48-year-old son of a working, middle-class family accepted the award on behalf of his wife, family, friends and the management, field staff and franchisees that make up the 8,800 7-Eleven c-stores here in North America.

Before a sea of suits and gowns, chandeliers above and the presence of beloved family and revered colleagues, DePinto described feeling overwhelmed, as if "energy" was pulled out of him. "I'm truly honored for such a special recognition," he said after the cocktail reception and dinner at the Four Seasons downtown. "It's humbling."

The presentation portion of the evening kicked off with Sonja Hubbard

Paul Allen's Ticket To Future

By Paul Andrews

This vision of the not-as-distant-as-once-thought future - particularly that programming wrinkle - drove Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen's Ticketmaster acquisition, announced yesterday.

Allen - who helped jump-start the Information Age in 1975 through his development, with Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates, of the BASIC software programming language for the first personal computer - has assembled an intriguing cast of investments potentially tied to a nationwide Data Highway.

It feels as though my left ear was almost cut off. I can feel what seems to be a scar running along the top of my neck also just below my ear. There is also a scar where my ear connects to my head. I can vaguely remember something about an injury there but the memory eludes my mind. I remember that scene in Star Trek "Insurrection" where Data has that injury on his neck. I also remember Rhonda Halffman having that scar on her neck that seemed to disappear after a while.

I didn't really understand it enough to really articulate. I awoke just now from an extended nap and I wondered again if I was on the verge of having a heart attack as I was sleeping. I need to get some exercise and better food. I saw some strange but precise patterns before I eyes as I awoke reminding me of when I was seeing those circuit patterns. The sensation seems familiar but the patterns I saw was completely different and the pattern at first seems to be numbers and then it changed to just some kind of geometric shapes that were very minute but I could recognize a pattern to it. I feel compelled to record what I dreamed of but I cannot remember it all and that is frustrating. I saw some people but what were they doing. They were close by and I guess we were inside someplace but that is also frustrating to try to describe. I think the dream seemed to focus on a cat that was with them but then they all walked off, I guess, into the distance and I was trying to call the cat back to me and then I saw that it was that dog Taffy running back to me. I seemed to see them all in the distance through a doorway that was near my and the dog was running as there was another small dog also in sight and it seemed to be raining very hard on them and I guess I spoke out loud about how Taffy was really running hard towards me and she eventually passed the other dog. Just as she got to me she turned to her right and went out of the sight just at that doorway I could see. At a point just after that it seems I was in a completely different place and there seems to be no connection to that first part and again I am frustrated that I cannot articulate what I saw. I seemed to be standing in a parking lot but it had a lot of stuff around suggesting it was not being used as a parking lot. There was some kind of object resting on another object and I seemed to be focused on that for a period of time but I cannot remember that top object. I was thinking about how it might fall down because it was sitting on top of some kind of large shelf structure that was turned on its side - ah, yes. The structure it was resting on resembled that structure downstairs in the lobby where they hold the mail for the residents. But this object was slightly different because it might have been made out of some kind of rigid cardboard and the cardboard was showing signs it was falling apart. So anyway, then I seemed to be a few feet over in that parking lot or whatever it was and I seemed to be just standing around and there was some kind of sense about trying to straighten up the place and I am aware of four or five barrels that I guess were 50 gallon oil drums and that I was going to straighten those up by lining them up in a row against a chain link I could see. I think I did pick up two and set them up near the fence. I am not certain which happened first but at one point I heard the dialog from "Woody" in the 2000 film "Mission To Mars" and I was just writing this I forgot the precise dialog I heard but I think it was a short excerpt where he asks if he is thinking the same thing and about whether something has caused it. Somebody might have also said something around that time about wearing something professional. So anyway, the two things that seemed to happen about the same time but that I cannot remember the sequence is the dialog about how something might have caused it or planned it and also where I heard what seemed to be a mosquito buzzing in my ear.

Salesman

I have this distinct memory of a VCR tape copy I had of the 1990 film "The Hunt For Red October." There was a second VCR tape I had that I associate with that copy of the 1990 film "The Hunt For Red October" but during the time since I started composing this note on my offline-computer I haven't been able to recall the name of that other title. I was thinking about that because I acquired that VCR tape about the time in 1990 I sent through the US Postal Service a brand-new VCR machine to my mother for her birthday so that would have been September 1990. I can remember talking to her over the telephone later and she didn't know how to set the time on the machine and I wasn't familiar with the interface of the device but I did successfully talk her through setting the time on the VCR machine. I have just recently started thinking again about that for some reason. I sent along with the new VCR a couple of karaoke videotapes a buddy and I made in a bar in downtown Charleston South Carolina one night in January 1990 after I had returned from overseas and of which is a time that my memory tells me I was being processed for honorable discharge at the end of my six-year term of enlistment in the United States Navy. My enlistment term didn't actually end until May 1990 but I was able to begin processing as early as January, or maybe that was February 1990, because I had a lot of leave time accumulated and I could use that for what was called "early separation" and so that is how I remember it. I had two months leave accumulated and I was working at a civilian job by the third week of March 1990 in Greenville South Carolina.

Also, "Salesman." I saw that in a dream while sleeping recently. I saw myself going through an induction process in the United States Marine Corps and I woke up understanding that I was dreaming of my actual experience in 1990. I saw a document that indicated I was being inducted to the United States Marine Corps with the officer grade of Chief Warrant Officer 2. I saw in the dream another document associated with my induction and that document indicated I had been assigned the informal name "Salesman."

BOEING

History

AV-8B Harrier II V/STOL Aircraft

In 1998, the McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Harrier II was the only fixed-wing vertical/short takeoff and landing (V/STOL) aircraft in the free world. Its ability to take off vertically makes it one of the most maneuverable combat aircraft in service, and it can zoom out of the range of enemy fire extremely quickly.

Based on the 1957 British-designed Hawker-Siddley "Kestrel," the AV-8B Harrier II was developed by a team representing McDonnell Douglas, British Aerospace and Rolls-Royce. Production of the St. Louis, Mo.-built AV-8B began in 1981, and more than 340 Harrier IIs were produced. They carried more fuel than the AV-8As and had higher lift and better cruise characteristics.

In 1991, Harrier IIs were the first U.S. Marine Corps tactical aircraft to arrive for Operation Desert Storm over the Persian Gulf. During the 42 days of combat, 86 Harrier IIs flew 3,380 combat sorties

Princess Diana Ruffles Italian Hosts, Insists on Seeing Secret Naval Gear

April 21, 1985 United Press International

LA SPEZIA, Italy — Britain's Princess Diana, displaying the strong will for which she is known, upset Italian officials Saturday by insisting on seeing top-secret NATO equipment aboard an Italian navy frigate.

"There is a trace of (Britain's) first Queen Elizabeth in her," Italian Defense Minister Giovanni Spadolini remarked.

The incident took place aboard the frigate Grecale, on which the 23-year-old Diana and her husband, Prince Charles, watched a display of sky-diving off La Spezia, an Italian naval base in northwestern Italy.

Diana and Charles, heir to the British throne, were on the second day of a tour of Italy that started Friday on the island of Sardinia and will end May 5 in Venice.

During the short offshore cruise aboard the Grecale, Cmdr. Gianpaolo di Pola invited Prince Charles to inspect a control room that contained highly classified equipment used by forces of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization to counter Exocet missile attacks. The equipment was developed after Argentina used the French-made Exocets against British navy ships during the Falkland Islands War of 1982.

Prince Charles--wearing the uniform of Royal Navy commander, a rank he reached in service between 1971 and 1976--took up the offer to inspect the room while Diana was scheduled to tour the ship.

However, Diana insisted on joining her husband in inspecting the secret anti-missile equipment. Italian officials expressed shock but granted her request.

"We made an exception for her. We would not have done it for anyone else," the Italian frigate commander said.

Spadolini, a former prime minister who played host to the royal couple during their visit to the naval base, expressed some astonishment over Diana's behavior.

He compared her strong will to that of England's Queen Elizabeth I, under whom the ships of Sir Francis Drake smashed the Spanish Armada in 1588.

"She took an acute interest in all the technical matters," Spadolini said. "If you tell an English princess she cannot do something, she will insist on doing it."
