Marine Medium Helicopter Squadron 265 (HMM-265) is a United States Marine Corps helicopter squadron consisting of CH-46E Sea Knight transport helicopters. The squadron, known as the "Dragons", is based at Marine Corps Air Station Futenma, Okinawa, Japan and falls under the command of Marine Aircraft Group 36 (MAG-36) and the 1st Marine Aircraft Wing (1st MAW).


The Gulf War & the 1990s

In 1990 and 1991 the Dragons were attached to the 5th Marine Expeditionary Brigade, Marine Air Group 50. During Operation Desert Shield, they took part in Operation Sea Soldier IV the largest NVG troop lift ever in Marine Corps history in the country of Oman. The squadron then waited on amphibious shipping in the Persian Gulf awaiting the start of combat operations. The Dragons were part of the 5th Marine Expeditionary Brigade’s amphibious feint into Kuwait, which succeeded in drawing the attention of Saddam Hussein’s forces away from the actual attack that occurred inland.

FBI: No prime anthrax suspect [ RACKETEER INFLUENCED AND CORRUPT ORGANIZATIONS US Title 18 ]


WASHINGTON — Months after anthrax-tainted letters apparently killed five people and sickened more than a dozen, the FBI said yesterday that its investigators do not have a prime suspect despite conducting hundreds of interviews.

The government was responding to a Washington Times report that the investigation was focusing on a single scientist who had worked at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Diseases at Fort Detrick, Md., and had twice been fired from government jobs.

The newspaper quoted sources as saying the scientist had been interviewed by FBI agents on several occasions and his house had been searched.

White House spokesman Ari Fleischer said there were several suspects and that the FBI had not narrowed that list down to one.

"I wish it were that easy and that simple right now," he said. "That story, I think, was a little overreaching in saying there's just one."

Anti-terrorist fight to cost $30 billion, Defense says

WASHINGTON — The war in Afghanistan and Pentagon efforts to bolster security at home will cost a projected $30 billion this year, far more than Congress has provided, according to Defense Department documents.

The Defense Department estimate means that it believes it could need an additional $12.6 billion over the next seven months for its operations in the United States, Afghanistan or wherever it may be combating terrorists.

"If operations continue to accrue as experienced to date, available funding will be exhausted by April or May," the 50-page report says.

President Bush is expected to ask Congress for extra money.

"Before administration officials ask for billions of dollars in additional money this year, I expect them to tell Congress where we are headed in this war and what exit strategy is envisioned in Afghanistan," said Senate Appropriations Committee Chairman Robert Byrd, D-W.Va.

FAA accused of ignoring failures in security tests

WASHINGTON — The Department of Transportation is investigating charges that the Federal Aviation Administration failed to close gaps in airline security before the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks.

The charges were made by Bogdan Dzakovic, part of an FAA "red team" that tested security. Team members try to get weapons or explosives past airport checkpoints. He said screeners failed the tests, but the FAA failed to act to improve security.

In a statement yesterday, the FAA said "weaknesses detected by red team have been addressed."

No mass-destruction arms found in Afghan searches

WASHINGTON — The U.S. military has visited some 115 of 120 suspected terrorist sites in Afghanistan without finding weapons of mass destruction or evidence that al-Qaida mastermind Osama bin Laden is dead, Gen. Tommy Franks, commander of U.S. forces engaged in the Afghan war, said yesterday.

"We have seen evidence that al-Qaida had a desire to weaponize chemical and biological capability," he said, "but we have not yet found evidence that indicates that they were able to do so. Doesn't mean they weren't. It simply means that we haven't found it yet."

Franks said the searches of the suspect compounds also failed to show that bin Laden had been killed. "Until we see evidence that he is not alive, then we'll continue to make the assumption that he is alive," the general said.

Food supplies are weak spot, federal official cautions

WASHINGTON — U.S. food supplies present a tremendous security vulnerability, Deputy Health and Human Services Secretary Claude Allen warned yesterday.

"We now inspect less than 1 percent of the food that comes into this country," Allen said.

"That is a weakness. As a result of that, one of the major areas we pushed for in biosecurity is food safety, and we were able to get funding to increase our inspection force by 700 new inspectors. But even with that, we're only going to be inspecting about 3 percent of the food. There's a tremendous vulnerability."

Allen said it is best to inspect food supplies coming to the U.S. at their source, not when they are crossing the border or arriving at ports of entry.

Afghan opium-poppy crop to proceed, official says

LASHKAR GAH, Afghanistan — The government of Helmand province, the biggest opium-growing region in the world, will allow this year's poppy crop to bloom and be harvested because Afghanistan's new regime is too weak to stop it, a key provincial official said yesterday.

"This year we're not able to destroy the crops. If we try to enforce a ban on the farmers, it wouldn't be good for us," said Haji Pir Mohammed, top deputy to the provincial governor.

The interim Afghan government of Hamid Karzai, installed in December after a U.S.-led military campaign ousted the Taliban, has banned the cultivation of opium poppies.

The government of the radical Islamic Taliban, which took power in 1996, enforced a ban that cut production to almost nothing last year. But during the anti-Taliban war last fall, farmers quickly replanted the opium-bearing flowers.

President Bush yesterday announced that although Afghanistan "failed demonstrably" in 2001 to cooperate in anti-drug efforts, it is entitled to receive U.S. economic assistance because of vital American interests.

Three human-rights organizations yesterday filed a petition with the Organization of American States challenging the detention of al-Qaida and Taliban suspects at Guantánamo Bay in Cuba without charges or "prisoner of war" protections. ... A new U.S. intelligence report says Russia's nuclear material and power plants are vulnerable to theft and terrorism, despite U.S.-aided efforts to increase security since Sept. 11. These facilities "typically receive low funding, lack trained security personnel and do not have sufficient equipment," the report says. ... The bullhorn President Bush used Sept. 14 when he stood on a crumpled firetruck at Ground Zero in New York and promised to avenge the attack was presented to him yesterday in the White House.

The President. Listen, I want to—I want to welcome Bob Beckwith to the Oval Office, and his wife, Barbara, and his two grandchildren and son and daughter who are here, and son-in-law.

As you may remember, I met Bob on the heap of a burnt-out fire engine in New York. And he didn't know and I didn't know that we were going to meet on that day. And I had—I was traveling there with George Pataki and Rudy Giuliani. And it was my chance, after the national prayer service, to go to New York City and tell the good people of that town, that city, how the Nation stood with them. I had a chance to go and see the firefighters and the police officers who had been giving every ounce of their energy to rescue their fellow citizens. And I was given a bullhorn, and it turned out to be one of those moments where I had a chance to speak to the world on behalf of the citizens of New York. And Bob was standing there by my side.

I told Bob when he came in, "You made me famous that day." But I want to thank you, Bob, for coming back, and I want to thank Colonel Wiese as well, who rescued the bullhorn and will let me keep the bullhorn for the library. There's a father-and-son exhibit that's going to go on at the Bush Library, "Bush 41" Library, at Texas A&M, and this will be one of the key parts of the exhibit. It's an historic—really an historic memento. Something we didn't choose, but it's one of those days that I'll never forget, and I want to thank you.

Mr. Beckwith. I'll never forget.

The President. It was an amazing experience. You know, I didn't realize at the time that you and I walked up on the heap of a burnt-out fire engine.

Charles Martz Jr. has always considered himself lucky. A year ago this week he was sitting up and looking out the window of a United Airlines DC-10—an ex-Navy pilot, he believes the bent-over "crash position" is useless—when the plane hit the ground at Sioux City, Iowa, and started to cartwheel down an airport runway. "It seemed like we skidded forever," Martz remembers. "Then came the sound of metal tearing and screeching. You couldn't hear people sounds. It was like being in the middle of a drum." Moments later, the 59-year-old cable-TV executive from Castle Pines, Colo., unscathed but for a dirty shirt, dropped from the smoking, overturned plane into a scene out of Dante. "It was like I was all alone, except for these bodies strewn all over this muddy cornfield. And I thought, 'Where is everybody? I can't be the sole survivor.' "

Bush given bullhorn he used at Ground Zero

WASHINGTON (CNN) -- President Bush was presented Monday with the bullhorn he used to rally rescue workers at the site of the collapsed World Trade Center towers three days after the September 11 terrorist attacks.

"It turned out to be one of those moments where I had a chance to speak to the world on behalf of the citizens of New York," Bush said. "It's really an historic memento -- something we didn't choose, but it was one of those days that I'll never forget."

On the Friday after the terrorist attacks, touring the disaster site known as Ground Zero with New York Gov. George Pataki and then-New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani, Bush stepped up on the crumpled remains of a fire engine to give an impromptu address to the rescue crews.

When one of the workers shouted at the president that he could not hear him, Bush replied, "I can hear you. The rest of the world hears you. And the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon."

The moment became one of the most memorable scenes in the aftermath of the attacks. A fireman who stood side-by-side with Bush on the rubble that day, Bob Beckwith, was on hand Monday when Pataki presented the bullhorn to Bush in the Oval Office.

"[The terrorists] have heard from us. And your leadership has been inspiring," Pataki said. "Americans will never forget this."

The president said the bullhorn will be sent to his father's presidential library at Texas A&M University, where it will become part of a "father-son" exhibit.

Bush cheers rescue workers

NEW YORK — Amid extraordinary security, President Bush visited the smoldering mountain of rubble yesterday that once was the World Trade Center, cheering the thousands of workers desperately searching for survivors.

Standing atop a wrecked firetruck amid the still-smoldering ruins, he thanked exhausted rescue workers and promised revenge.

With a bullhorn in one hand and his other arm draped around Bob Beckwith, a retired firefighter from Queens, Bush told the crowd of rescue workers that the nation honored their efforts and mourned those killed in Tuesday morning's terrorist attack.

"I want you all to know that America today — that America today — is on bended knee in prayer for the people whose lives were lost here, for the workers who work here, for the families who mourn," he said.

"This nation stands with the good people of New York City and New Jersey and Connecticut as we mourn the loss of thousands of our citizens," Bush said.

The president and congressional leaders from the New York area flew up on Air Force One after attending a national day of prayer and remembrance service in Washington, D.C. Cities across America and countries around the world joined in honoring the memories of the more than 4,700 people missing in the attack.

Security surrounding Bush was so tight that reporters accompanying the delegation weren't told where the presidential plane would land.

Military jets flew over Manhattan as Marine helicopters ferried the delegation to the starting point of their motorcade by the East River.

But once at the site, Bush walked among the hundreds of rescue workers, exchanging words, shaking hands.

When he climbed onto the wreckage of a fire truck to speak through the bullhorn, the workers began complaining: "George, we can't hear you!"

"I can hear you," Bush responded. "I can hear you. The rest of the world hears you.

"And the people who knocked these buildings down will hear all of us soon!"
