There was a bunch of stuff in my dreams last night, but I only remember one part. I was also very tired when I woke up, but couldn't go back to sleep. The part of the dream I do remember is where I was walking down some stairs. It seemed to be outside, as in stairs leading down the outside of a building, a factory maybe. I am thinking it was at the end of something, a conclusion of something. I turned around after going down a couple of the stairs and was organizing some stuff, books maybe. I couldn't get them all together or something and I think I was going to have to make a second trip to bring them all down. Within the boxes and books, I pulled out a hat and put it on. It was a U.S. Navy Officer's cover.

Today I am also thinking back to that dream I had in my last days at Microsoft. I told a friend about it. I dreamed that someone had set off two bombs and I was watching the towering clouds from the explosions rising high into the atmosphere. I was baffled at how people were going around their normal business like nothing had happened. There was one person I recognized, a guy that was on the same team as I. I didn't understand why no one was concerned.

STS-82 Mission Highlight Presentation

The STS-82 is the second in a series of planned service missions to the Hubble Space Telescope (HST).

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 03/16/08 9:37 PM
I was looking for photos of the STS-1 launch on 4/12/1981 and as I was looking at this photo of a later launch, for a brief instant, I almost thought I visualize seeing that orange booster tank from the windows of the Columbia.

I don't think it is visible while strapped into the flight deck chair though so maybe it was as I was climbing into the chair to wait for launch.

Title
STS-58 Launch

Full Description
The longest Space Shuttle flight in program history begins at 10:53:10 a.m. EDT with a flawless liftoff from Launch Pad 39B. During the 14 day flight of STS-58, a seven member crew will study extensively the adaptation of the human body to the near-weightless environment of space. Mission Commander is John E. Blaha; Pilot, Richard A. Searfoss; Payload Commander, Dr. M. Rhea Seddon; Mission Specialists, William S. McArthur Jr., David A. Wolf, and Shannon W. Lucid; and Payload Specialist, Martin J. Fettman.

It could have also been that launch tower that is overhanging that triggered some kind of brief flash of a true memory of sitting there in the command chair. I have been thinking for a while that I was in command of that first flight, as well as later ones.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 03/16/08 9:48 PM
There has been more than one time, several times actually, when I felt as though I was gaining conscious awareness again of seeing the launch tower passing by my window in the space shuttle as we were lifting off.

PILOT ASTRONAUTS

Early in the U.S. manned space program, jet aircraft and engineering training were prerequisites for selection as an astronaut. Today, scientific education and experience are equally important prerequisites in selecting both pilots and mission specialists.

Pilot astronauts play a key role in Shuttle flights, serving as either commanders or pilots. During flights, commanders are responsible for the vehicle, the crew, mission success and safety -- duties analogous to those of the captain of a ship. Shuttle commanders are assisted by pilot astronauts who are second in command and whose primary responsibilities involve controlling and operating the Shuttle. During flights, commanders and pilots usually assist in spacecraft deployment and retrieval operations using the RMS arm or other payload-unique equipment on board the Shuttle.

To be selected as a pilot astronaut candidate an applicant must meet a number of basic qualification requirements. A bachelor's degree in engineering, biological science, physical science or mathematics is required. A graduate degree is desired, although not essential. The applicant must have had at least l,000 hours flying time in jet aircraft. Experience as a test pilot is desirable

FLIGHT CREW COMPLEMENT AND CREW TRAINING

The orbiter crew consists of the commander and pilot. Additional crew members are a mission specialist and one or more payload specialists. The commander and a pilot, or pilot-qualified mission specialist, are needed to operate and manage the orbiter.

The commander is responsible for the safety of the crew and has authority throughout the flight to deviate from the flight plan, procedures and assignments if necessary to preserve crew safety or vehicle integrity. The commander is also responsible for the overall execution of the flight plan in compliance with NASA policy, mission rules and Mission Control Center directives.

The pilot, second in command of the flight, assists the commander in all phases of orbiter flight and is delegated certain responsibilities (e.g., during two-shift orbital operations). The commander or the pilot is also available to perform specific payload operations.

Bush, Brazil's Leader Agree to 'Iron Out' Trade Differences

Talks: Presidents meet at White House ahead of April summit on the creation of a hemispheric economic bloc.

March 31, 2001 NORMAN KEMPSTER TIMES STAFF WRITER

WASHINGTON — President Bush and Brazilian President Fernando Henrique Cardoso acknowledged Friday that tough negotiations lie ahead as the Western Hemisphere's two largest economies jockey for advantage in creation of a 34-nation trading bloc joining North and South America.

Although Bush and Cardoso asserted that they share a belief in global free trade, they conceded that seemingly minor disagreements can have billion-dollar consequences.

"Difficulties are normal in the area of trade," Cardoso told reporters in the White House driveway after his first official meeting with Bush.

Earlier, answering questions at a joint news conference, Cardoso said Bush's philosophy puts the United States first, "and I would say the same . . . Brazil first."

Nevertheless, both presidents insisted that far more issues unite than divide them.

"We've got a lot in common," Bush said. "Brazil is a vast nation. It's a democracy. It's a country with huge economic potential. It's a government run by a good man. . . . There's no question in my mind that we'll have good relations over the next years."

Cardoso agreed: "Brazil and the United States have to be close . . . not just in terms of trade but in terms of the hemisphere in general, in terms of security, in terms of democracy."

As the Western Hemisphere's economic powerhouses, Brazil and the United States expect to dominate the trade discussions at the hemisphere summit planned for April 20-22 in Quebec. The heads of every government in the hemisphere except Cuba are expected to approve steps toward establishment of the free-trade zone, but years of detailed negotiations will remain.

"Sure there are going to be disagreements," a White House official said in summing up the meeting. "But that's what trade negotiations are all about--to get the disagreements out on the table."

With an economy about twice the size of Russia's and a population second only to the United States in the hemisphere, Brazil is determined to be taken seriously by Washington.

"Brazil is skeptical that the United States is prepared to deal with its restrictions that severely limit imports from Brazil, especially agricultural products," said Sidney Weintraub, an economic expert at the Center for Strategic and International Studies, a Washington think tank. "The United States, in turn, harbors doubts that Brazil fully intends to support the conclusion of the [hemispheric free-trade] negotiations by 2005."

Bush expressed optimism that the differences can be bridged.

"Absolutely, we can work together," Bush said. "We had a very good discussion about trade. . . . We'll work closely to iron out any differences that may exist."

Bush directed U.S. Trade Representative Robert B. Zoellick to work closely with Brazilian trade negotiator Roberto Teixeira da Costa in the days leading up to the summit.

Bush Goes To Bat, Installs T-ball On The South Lawn

March 31, 2001 By G. ROBERT HILLMAN The Dallas Morning News

WASHINGTON — Play ball!

Yes, batter up, right here on the South Lawn of the White House, about where the president's helicopter lands.

Flanked by several dozen baseball Hall of Fame legends in the East Room, President Bush announced Friday that he's opening up the South Lawn to kids for T-ball.

"In a small way, maybe we can help preserve the best of baseball" at the White House, Bush said. "We've got a pretty good-sized back yard here."

In short, the president is a big baseball fan.

"One of the great things about living here is you don't have to sign up for a baseball fantasy camp to meet your heroes. It turns out, they come here," Bush told the Hall of Famers and others invited to an "opening day" lunch at the White House.

Looking around, he noted a roomful of "familiar faces" from the baseball world: Nolan Ryan, Sandy Koufax, Duke Snider, Whitey Ford, Hank Aaron, Stan Musial and Yogi Berra, among others.

"Yogi's been an inspiration to me -- not only because of his baseball skills, but, of course, for the enduring mark he left on the English language," said Bush, who's leaving his own enduring mark on the language.

"Some in the press corps here even think he might be my speechwriter," the president joked, recalling that he had quoted the old Yankee catcher just last month in an address to a joint session of Congress.

"When you come to a fork in the road, take it," Bush had said, borrowing one of the ballplayer's famous lines.

No less than "five decades of baseball" were gathered in the White House on Friday, Bush noted, but he appeared to relish just as much his announcement of T-ball on the South Lawn.

It's a small gesture, made grander by the host and, of course, the splendid "back yard" of the White House, spilling lush and green from the Truman Balcony to the Ellipse, where the national Christmas tree stands year round.

Bush's plan is not to build a diamond on the South Lawn, but rather to drop some bases on the grass and bring in a few bleachers from storage for a day or so a month, starting this spring and running through at least the next three seasons.

At the White House, which has seen its share of real extravaganzas over the years, this is no big deal, press secretary Ari Fleischer assured reporters.

After all, he noted, there was a carnival or two on the lawn during the Clinton administration and picnics galore -- including more than a few for the press -- going way back.

The president and first lady Laura Bush will attend some, if not all, the T-ball games, Fleischer said, and a "healthy amount of participation" is expected from others in the administration as well.

"There's a whole lot of fun to be had with this," he said. "We'll have to decide who gets to sing the national anthem."

Just who plays on this new presidential field of dreams and other logistics will be worked out by the White House and the Little League Baseball International Headquarters in Williamsport, Pa.

Bush, who worked his way up from Little League in Midland, Texas, to managing general partner of the Texas Rangers, said that baseball at the White House was his idea and that Laura Bush agreed, "just so long as I wasn't one of the players."

The regal East Room filled with chuckles, for the president, by all accounts, is much too old for T-ball.

During the season, Fleischer said the president hopes not only to take in a few major league games but also some minor league and college games.

He'll miss the major leagues' season opener Sunday -- when the Rangers play the Toronto Blue Jays in Puerto Rico -- but he does plan to throw out the first ball Friday at Milwaukee's new Miller Park, where the Brewers will play the Cincinnati Reds.

"Baseball isn't just in the stats. It isn't just the money. It really isn't who makes the Hall of Fame," the president said, offering his own assessment of the national pastime.

"Baseball is the style of a Willie Mays," Bush suggested, "or the determination of a Hank Aaron, or the endurance of a Mickey Mantle, the discipline of Carl Yastrzemski, the drive of Eddie Mathews, the reliability of a Kaline or a Morgan, the grace of a DiMaggio, the kindness of a Harmon Killebrew and the class of Stan Musial, the courage of a Jackie Robinson or the heroism of Lou Gehrig.

"My hope for the game is that these qualities will never be lost," the president said. "Whatever else changes -- even if the same nine innings run longer and the fly balls farther, and the grass isn't always grass like it should be -- those values are still what makes the boys and girls and the fans and players into legends."

Remarks Prior to Discussions With President Fernando Henrique Cardoso of Brazil and an Exchange With Reporters

March 30, 2001

So Mr. President, welcome, glad to have you here.

President Cardoso. Thank you very much, sir. Let me say that I am very glad to be here, be with you. I knew your father. Now I'm very glad to see the way you are. As I said yesterday, I will put—take out my glasses to see your eyes, because you said that you would like to see my eyes directly.

President Bush. That's right. [Laughter]

MARTINA MCBRIDE

"(I Never Promised You A) Rose Garden"

I beg your pardon I never promised you a rose garden
Along with the sunshine there's gotta be a little rain sometime
When you take you gotta give so live and let live and let go oh oh oh oh
I beg your pardon I never promised you a rose garden

I could promise you things like big diamond rings
But you don't find roses growin' on stalks of clover
So you better think it over
Well, if sweet talking you could make it come true
I would give you the world right now on a silver platter
But what would it matter
So smile for a while and let's be jolly love shouldn't be so melancholy
Come along and share the good times while we can

I beg your pardon I never promised you a rose garden
Along with the sunshine there's gotta be a little rain sometime
I beg your pardon I never promised you a rose garden

I could sing you a tune and promise you the moon
But if that's what it takes to hold you I'd just as soon let you go
But there's one thing I want you to know
You'd better look before you leap still waters run deep
And there won't always be someone there to pull you out
And you know what I'm talking about
So smile for a while and let's be jolly love shouldn't be so melancholy
Come along and share the good times while we can

I beg your pardon I never promised you a rose garden
Along with the sunshine there's gotta be a little rain sometime.....

I beg your pardon I never promised you a rose garden
Along with the sunshine there's gotta be a little rain sometime.....

THE BIONIC WIKI

“Welcome Home, Jaime”

S1 E01

Production 44415

Original Airdate: January 14, 1976

Summary

Industrialist Carlton Harris has discovered the bionic powers of Jaime Sommers, and arranges several secret "tests" so that he can film her in action. When Oscar realizes what is happening, he arranges a "falling out" with Jaime so that she can go to work for Carlton, who is suspected of selling government secrets. While stealing secrets for Carlton in an effort to gather evidence against him, Jaime befriends the industrialist's son, Donald, a law student who is bothered by his father's illegal activities.

Deconstructed

For years, "Welcome Home, Jaime," has been the subject of much debate and speculation in fan communities. For much of its post-broadcast life it was believed to have aired as originally intended: on Sunday, January 11, 1976 as a Six Million Dollar Man episode.

But research for the Time-LIfe 2010 Six Million Dollar Man - The Complete Collection revealed evidence to the contrary. Vintage promotional recordings and numerous newspaper articles indicate that "Welcome Home, Jaime," was pulled from the Six Million Dollar Man, Sunday night time slot, re-edited with Bionic Woman main/end titles and credits, issued a new production number, and pushed up to make its ABC broadcast debut on Wednesday, January 14, 1976 as the premiere episode of The Bionic Woman.

Speculation lingers on whether original film elements of "Welcome Home, Jaime" with its Six Million Dollar Man main/end titles and credits survived after the switch.

My last port in the Navy was the French Riveria. I was disappointed that we had just missed the famous car race that happens there, the Gran Prix I think it is. When I left the ship, we were anchored off the coast and they took me into port in the Captain's gig. I was very hung over. Then they took me to the airport, in Toulon I think, and I had to ride in the back of the mail truck, sitting on boxes. From there, I took off one a military flight, but they landed shortly after take off because of some mechanical problem and I was stuck there for a long time before we took off again. There is also some memory here about Sicily, but I'm not sure what that is about, I had to stay there for a while, there is almost something like a pleasant memory that won't come up to the surface associated with that time. There was something there about being by myself.

Flight Crew Tells Of Paradoxes

Calm Mixed With Terror

Euphoria Tainted With Guilt

July 29, 1989 By Gary Washburn, Transportation writer.

Flight attendants who survived the crash of United Airlines Flight 232 held an emotional news conference Friday where they told of calm mixed with terror, of grief blended with euphoria.

At times successfully choking back tears and at others giving in to their feelings, the attendants addressed reporters and about 200 colleagues who gathered in a ballroom at the O`Hare Hilton Hotel to hear their stories.

Virginia Murray said she was strapped to her seat upside down in the wreckage when what remained of the huge DC-10 came to rest.

After unbuckling her seat belt, she said, ``I saw green. I smelled fresh- cut grass, and I ran for daylight.``

Finding herself running next to the passenger who had been sitting across from her, Murray shouted, ``Are we alive? Are we alive?`` she recounted. ``It was just such a euphoric feeling. . . . I really thought that I was gone.``

A total of 185 passengers and crew members survived the July 19 crash at the Sioux City, Ia., airport; 111 died, including flight attendant Rene Le Beau, the only fatality among the crew.

``I`m feeling guilty that I am here and all the other people didn`t make it,`` said an emotional Susan White, another member of the crew.

The flight attendants were serving passengers on the plane, bound from Denver to Chicago, when they heard a loud bang as a portion of the tail engine disintegrated. That was followed by a temporary sensation of falling and then rolling back and forth as the plane lost hydraulic power.

Passengers were told of the problem and advised of the planned emergency landing in Sioux City. The flight attendants secured items in the cabin and showed people how to brace for impact. There was no panic.

Janice Brown, head of Flight 232`s flight attendants, kept contact with the pilot, Alfred Haynes.

``No amount of praise will ever be enough for Capt. Haynes and his crew,`` Brown said. ``They were extremely calm and in control. I took my cue from that, and we did what we were trained to do.``

``We all prayed,`` flight attendant Donna McGrady said. ``We had our moments of prayer.``

Speaking on the intercom, Haynes warned the cabin that the landing was four minutes away and then two. After he gave the order to brace, flight attendants repeated the command over and over until the plane struck the ground.

As the craft hit, ``I can only assume I lost consciousness,`` Brown said. When she revived, she said, ``fire went over me,`` but ``I felt very accepting. I felt no fear, no pain.``

McGrady, who was sitting in a jump seat at the right rear of the DC-10, said she had her eyes open ``all the time`` as the plane struck the ground.

As the jet cartwheeled down a runway and started to come apart, ``I saw nothing but grass,`` she said. ``The thing I (wondered) was when it was going to stop.``

Fearing an explosion after the plane finally ground to a halt, McGrady scrambled out, helped a boy down from the fuselage and finally looked down the path that the jet had taken.

``To come out and see nothing but the debris,`` she sobbed. ``I said, `Oh God. Where is the other part of the aircraft?` ``

The five flight attendants who spoke at the press conference were joined by three United attendants who were at a hotel in Sioux City on a layover when they heard a news bulletin of a plane in trouble.

After discovering it was a United jet, they rushed to the airport to help, arriving about 15 minutes after the crash.

Debbie Best took charge of two young boys, ages 4 and 7, who had been on the plane with another brother and their mother.

Best said she called the boys` father to tell him they were all right.

``His first response was to ask where his wife was and where his other son was,`` she said. When he learned Best had no information about them, ``he pleaded with me to please take care of his babies, and I said I would,`` she said.

Best took the two children, who suffered only scratches, back to her room so they wouldn`t have to spend the night in a local college dormitory where the other survivors were housed. The boys asked about their mother and brother.

``I could only comfort them and tell them we would hope for the best,``

she said.

But the two missing family members were among the dead.

At Least 173 Survive Air Crash

Jet Explodes In Iowa Cornfield With 293 Aboard

July 20, 1989 By Jerry Crimmins and Rogers Worthington. Robert Blau, Bentley Boyd, John Camper, Bob Carr, James Coates, Jean Latz Griffin, Jack Houston, Antoine Lewis, Katherine Seigenthaler and Pat Szymczak contributed to this report.

A Chicago-bound DC-10 lost part of its tail in midair, tried to make an emergency landing and crashed Wednesday afternoon in Sioux City, Ia., killing more than 100 of the 293 people on board.

For 30 gut-wrenching minutes after the tail cone section fell off, the pilot struggled to fly the disabled United Airlines jumbo jet 70 miles to the Iowa city`s airport.

The plane, United`s Flight 232 from Denver to Philadelphia by way of Chicago, carried 279 passengers, 8 flight attendants and a crew of 3, United officials said.

About a half-hour before the crash, survivors said, they heard a loud noise from the rear of the plane, followed by an announcement from the pilot that one of the engines had failed.

There was no panic after the announcement, said survivor Charles Martz of Castle Pines, Colo. But just before landing, he said, ``the pilot came on and said that this may be more than a rough landing, so do the best you can to assume the (crash preparedness) position.

``Then the plane began to dip and yaw. We hit with the right wing down. We rolled inside and out and all over the place.``

Martz said he crawled through a broken window engulfed by flames. ``I said the hell with it-I`m going for it,`` he said.

When the plane came to rest, said passenger Cliff Marshall of Columbus, Ohio, ``we were sitting there upside down and it began to fill up with smoke. Then God opened a hole in the basement and I pushed a little girl out. I grabbed another, kept pulling them out until they didn`t come no more.``

The 42-minute Drama Of Flight 232

This article was written by Inquirer staff writer Larry Eichel based on reporting by Fawn Vrazo in Denver, Gilbert M. Gaul in Chicago and Paul Nussbaum and Andrew Cassel in Sioux City, Iowa. Inquirer staff writers Dwight Ott and John Way Jennings also contributed to this article

POSTED: July 23, 1989

The plane bounced once and came down. A hole was torn open in the left side of the plane near the front of the coach section, and a small ball of fire flashed inside the plane.

"It was just a momentary, instantaneous flash, but it was horrible," said Rehnberg, whose arms and face were burned.

"It was very brief, like when you light a gas fire and there's too much gas," said Hughes, the honeymooner from Reading. "Then I remember debris hitting me as we skidded down the runway. It just kept hitting me. And there was this incredible level of noise. It was like being on a roller coaster and having people throwing things at you."

Everyone watching on the ground, and Greco watching from his helicopter, thought that there would be few, if any, survivors. Other parts of the plane - the nose section and much of the rear - had seemed to disintegrate.

`Souls' Of Flight 232: A Year After Crash -- The 184 Who Shared A Miracle Try To Escape The Memories

By Tad Bartimus, Sharon Cohen

AP

Capt. Alfred Haynes, his doomed jetliner wallowing all over the Iowa sky, responded to an air-traffic controller in the time-honored jargon of his aviation fraternity. There were 296 ``souls on board,'' including his own.

On a sweltering Wednesday afternoon last July 19, they all rode a 168-ton flying brick down into a cornfield at 200 miles an hour. In the flame and dust unleashed when the DC-10 cartwheeled out of control, 112 of the souls on board United Airlines Flight 232 were lost.

But 184 survived. And as they prepare to return to Sioux City for a memorial service Thursday, they struggle with unanswerable questions about life and death, guilt, nightmares, physical injuries that may never heal, strained relationships with people they love, and memories that deny them a single good night's sleep.

They shake at some of life's simplest events, afraid that a highway bridge might fall on them, frightened by the sound and smoky smell of a child's cap gun, convinced that a washing machine has an electrical short that will cause a fire.

Mary Kahl couldn't feel comfortable at work for six months. Paul Olivier, like many other survivors, won't fly on a DC-10. William Robertson drew up a list of things he wants to do in life. Jerry Schemmel quit his job - too many reminders. Rod Vetter fears driving into downtown Chicago. What if a car jumps a guardrail into his lane?

``My life is never going to be the same,'' says Upton Rehnberg, 53.

They question why they lived, when so many others died. They meet in groups to grieve, they call each other at 3 a.m. to sob, they savor a unique joy with the coming of new mornings, the sight of sunsets. Their very survival is a shared miracle.

``On the plane as we were going down, it didn't matter how rich or how poor you were, what color you were or what your religion was, where you came from or where you were going,'' says Garry Priest, 24, of Denver. ``We all drew strength from each other, we were all in it together. As the plane crashed, everybody was special.''

The DC-10 was headed to Chicago from Denver when it attempted an emergency landing at the Sioux Gateway Airport. The jet flipped once and burst into flames. Forty-five minutes before impact, the crew had lost all steering control when the tail engine shattered, spewing out titanium fan blades and chunks of metal that severed hydraulic lines.

Many victims were trapped in the charred fuselage. Some, dazed and burned, walked or crawled to safety. Others, still buckled in seat belts, were found in 4-foot-high corn.

Dozens of survivors will gather Thursday to pay tribute to Haynes' crew and to the rescuers and townsfolk who opened their hearts and their homes to them.

Though each has a unique memory of that terrible day that bonded them for life, they're all amazed they are alive, and wonder why.

Rod Vetter, a 40-year-old former Navy flier who logged more than 300,000 miles with United before the crash, now hesitates before committing to a business trip. Even everyday trips downtown can be a strain.

``I have a fear of things falling and things happening that are out of my control,'' he says.

``I never had the fear driving on the interstate of a bridge collapsing when I was driving underneath it. I have a fear driving into downtown Chicago . . . (wondering) what if a car jumps the guardrail and goes into my lane? Just weird things like that.''

Vetter still thinks of that day frequently.

``There's a lot of things that key in the thought of the crash, whether it's black smoke, loud noise, screeching brakes, the smell of burning plastic,'' says Vetter, who owns an import-export electronics company in the Chicago suburb of Arlington Heights.

``Some people are saying they are not letting it out of their minds. Maybe one year's time is not enough time. Maybe it will take 10 years to get back to a rational view of life. It's not going to heal in a year.''

Kate Wolfe Bressieux hired a handyman to fix her front steps, inspect her washing machine and dryer for electrical shorts, and repair anything else around her house he thought might be a safety problem. By her own description, she ``freaked out'' after a fire in her basement last Christmas.

A 36-year-old organizational-development consultant, Ms. Wolfe Bressieux is unemployed and recently separated from her husband.

Days before any trip, she has nightmares that her car will turn over and burst in flames.

``My life has been in total disarray since the crash. I'm having real difficulty in putting things back together. I'm a very extroverted person, so I'm amazed I've become so isolated and withdrawn.

``When you are sitting next to someone and five minutes later they are dead and you aren't, you wonder why you aren't. Having come that close to my own vulnerability, I don't want to be that vulnerable again.''

Everyone watching on the ground, and Greco watching from his helicopter, thought that there would be few, if any, survivors. Other parts of the plane - the nose section and much of the rear - had seemed to disintegrate.

"We could not believe anybody could walk away from it," Greco said.

But a section in the middle, containing Rows 9 through 21, had broken away intact, rolled over and skidded to a stop in a cornfield. And in the two minutes after the crash, about 70 people would walk away from it.

Not right away, though. Inside that section, Rehnberg and several dozen other passengers were left hanging upside down. After managing to release

himself, Rehnberg fell to the floor. "I saw light in the aisle and tried to go forward toward the cabin."

Treber saw smoke and fire outside and heard a small explosion. But she and the passengers around her were virtually unscathed; all of them escaped on their own, into the cornfield, through an end of the broken plane body. Treber ran as fast as she could in her two-inch red high heels, while people around her shouted, "It's going to go! We have to get out!"

Hudspeth, too, ran out into the corn stalks, which seemed to her as if they must be 10 feet tall. She had suffered only a bruise behind one ear. The white skirt she was wearing was still perfectly clean.

You know, if you embrace my theories the way I do then I am actually not surprised there are NOT overt signs of cornfields in this film, I think to myself writing this sentence as I have the DVD paused to make this note. Then just before I was about to make this post I thought back to the scene of "Angel" caressing the statue of Jesus Christ in the church, and I barely recall that brief scene but I recall the smirk on her face and I think again about how seriously annoyed I was with the mannequins I kept seeing but my real-life companion in that world did not see mannequins but actual mechanized beings and they told her to not tell me they were mechanized and I did not know about that until she told me about it in the real world.

I mean sure, I think now remembering what I had wrote earlier in my blog about the cornfield. I was on that flight, while everyone else had ducked and covered and I was still sitting up so I could maintain custody of the prisoner, then everything went kind of fuzzy for a second, even more so, and then the quietness was staggering. I have written about that before, that sense in my mind of sudden quietness, and that was me sitting precisely as I had been on the airplane and there was nothing around me but tall stalks of corn and I was still sitting in the same airplane seat but I was all alone in that cornfield and it was suddenly blaring and maddenly blaring quietness. It drives me crazy now just trying to thing again about that.

July 23, 1990 Vol. 34 No. 3 Survivors of Flight 232 Reflect on the Year-Ago Crash That Spared Them but Took 112 to Their Graves

By William Plummer

Charles Martz Jr. has always considered himself lucky. A year ago this week he was sitting up and looking out the window of a United Airlines DC-10—an ex-Navy pilot, he believes the bent-over "crash position" is useless—when the plane hit the ground at Sioux City, Iowa, and started to cartwheel down an airport runway. "It seemed like we skidded forever," Martz remembers. "Then came the sound of metal tearing and screeching. You couldn't hear people sounds. It was like being in the middle of a drum." Moments later, the 59-year-old cable-TV executive from Castle Pines, Colo., unscathed but for a dirty shirt, dropped from the smoking, overturned plane into a scene out of Dante. "It was like I was all alone, except for these bodies strewn all over this muddy cornfield. And I thought, 'Where is everybody? I can't be the sole survivor.' "

A total of 112 people died when United Flight 232 from Denver to Chicago was disabled by an engine explosion on July 19, 1989, and crashed and burned while attempting an emergency landing at Sioux City. But 183 other passengers shared Martz's extraordinary luck. This week 140 of the survivors, their families and the plane's crew (all but one lived) will observe the anniversary of their deliverance from death at a reunion in Sioux City. They will thank the city for its efficient rescue operation and view models of a Flight 232 memorial to be built at the airport. But the real value of the gathering will be to provide them with one more opportunity to exchange memories and nightmares and to console one another in their survivors' guilt. Martz is doubly lucky, because he has been able to put the crash behind him. He doesn't feel the need to attend. But most are still struggling with lives utterly changed by the crash. "It's an oversimplification of the process," says a therapist who has worked with the survivors, "but trauma victims need to talk about what happened to them over and over and over again until they're bored with it."

A Child's Horror

Six-year-old Lindsi Werner of Pueblo, Colo., recounted her experience to her psychologist in a book she called What a Trip. Everything happens in a blur in the book. One moment the little girl is enjoying the flight with her grandmother, and in the next "the speakers came on and said, 'Bend and touch your feet.' I knew we were going to crash. I started to pray, 'Keep us safe.' " Next, "we were upside down and people were screaming and crying." Then, outside in the cornfield, Lindsi "saw a lady that made me feel I was dreaming. Blood was dripping down her face."

According to her mother, Jerri Brown, who is divorced from Lindsi's father, the little girl wouldn't let her out of her sight for months following the crash—she even panicked when Jerri went into the bathroom. She was terrified by her first fire drill in kindergarten. Lindsi's psychologist predicted that her walled-off feelings would show themselves as physical illness, and over the past six months, she has been sick constantly with colds and the flu, even scarlet fever. But thanks to lots of support and fishing trips with a doting grandfather, the child seems to be mending. Still, Lindsi says she will never forget "all those bloody people."

The Wound of Memory

Ernie Ornelas's hands bear graphic witness to the crash. Covered with long jagged scars, they were cut and burned during the frantic minutes when Ornelas, 46, struggled to release a 12-year-old boy hanging from a seat belt, then crawled with him to safety across the searing metal ribs of the plane. Ornelas, a Postal Service employee in Denver, didn't realize at the time that his body was also burned. Nor does he dwell on it now. What still hurts terribly is the thought of four coworkers, all friends, traveling on business, who perished on Flight 232. "I constantly think of them because I see their work, their names," he says. "If I could have just one wish, they would be back. I can't understand why so many people around me didn't make it and I did."

Ornelas still sees a trauma therapist and expects never to fly again. He has trouble sleeping and relives the disaster in his dreams. "When I see an airplane crash on television," he says, "I can see the smoke and smell it, even though I'm not there." He feels most at peace, he says, when he's running, especially in the rain. "You're all alone—it's a comforting feeling.

A Crisis of Faith

Garry Priest has experienced his own dark night of the soul. An employee of a Denver-based restaurant chain, Priest stayed out of work for almost a month after the crash, trying to come to terms with his feelings. "I was 23," he says, "and I walked on that plane invincible. It took that plane crash for me to be sensitized to what can happen to me and others." He was angered afterward when people about to fly would rub his head for good luck; he couldn't understand when they'd tell him how special he was and that the Lord must have a plan for him. "I kept thinking, 'Why am I more special than that 8-year-old boy I saw dead on the runway?' I thought if that's the Lord, if that's the way he works, then I don't want any part of it."

Visits with a Catholic priest helped restore his faith, and his boss talked him out of quitting his job. Priest has also drawn comfort from a support group of some 30 survivors that meets monthly. Their first exercise was to screen videotapes of the crash, and they were surprised to find that all their recollections differed. "We were like a deck of cards thrown up in the air," says Priest.

"I've had a problem with my own family," he continues, "as other people have in the group. I remember my family saying, 'Garry, it's been six months after the crash. Aren't you going to get any better?' " Priest says he was getting better, but they couldn't see it. "You see, my family lost this person they knew in Sioux City," he explains. "I can never be that person again. But I can care now. I can make a difference."

One Family's Fears

Harold Fong, 36, and his wife, Martha Bartz, 38, both in real estate in Colorado Springs, worked desperately to save their 2-year-old son, Scott, who didn't have his own seat and had been traveling on his mother's lap. As instructed by the crew, Fong somehow held his screaming little boy against the shifting floor as the plane cartwheeled. Since the crash, all three must fight to control their constant apprehension of disaster. Bartz says she used to be "carefree, pretty trusting of the world. But now I have to be in control of the situation, or I'm really uncomfortable." Fong says he looks each way half a dozen times before crossing the street. Scott has developed a fear of heights and of "things that go fast." The little boy often plays in his room with his toy planes, crashing them into the floor and announcing, "They're on fire."

Still terrified by her son's brush with death, Bartz has gone on TV calling for mandatory child restraints on airplanes. "Recently we flew to Phoenix," she says, "and all these mothers were bouncing their babies in their laps..."Her voice trails off and she shakes her head. "You want to say to these people, 'You're crazy'...although we did it too...before the crash."

REAL CLEAR HISTORY

United Flight 232 Crash Lands in Sioux City

En route from Denver to Chicago on July 19, 1989, United Airlines Flight 232 suffered a loss of all hydraulics caused by an explosion in the tail, and with it all flight controls. Nevertheless, the crew was able to steer and maintain elevation by manipulating the engines, and navigated the plane to Sioux City, Iowa. In the crash landing, 111 of the people on board died, but thanks to the efforts of the pilots, 185 survived.

Prisoner of War Medal

The Prisoner of War Medal is a military award of the United States armed forces which was authorized by Congress and signed into law by President Ronald Reagan on 8 November 1985. The United States Code citation for the POW Medal statute is 10 U.S.C. § 1128.

The Prisoner of War Medal may be awarded to any person who was a prisoner of war after April 5, 1917, (the date of the United States entry into World War I was the 6th). It is awarded to any person who was taken prisoner or held captive while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States; while engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing Armed Force; or while serving with friendly forces engaged in armed conflict against an opposing Armed Force in which the United States is not a belligerent party. As of an amendment to Title 10 of the United States Code in 1989, the medal is also awarded for captivity by foreign armed forces that are hostile to the United States, under circumstances which the Secretary concerned finds to have been comparable to those under which persons have generally been held captive by enemy armed forces during periods of armed conflict. The person's conduct, while in captivity, must have been honorable. This medal may be awarded posthumously to the surviving next of kin of the recipient.

SULU: I found it. I know it's a crazy coincidence, but I've always wanted one like this. Found it lying right over there. An old-time police special, and in beautiful condition. Hasn't been one like this made in a couple of centuries.

KIRK: (holding out his hand for the offending weapon) Mister Sulu.

SULU: (handing it over) It fires lead pellets propelled by expanding gases from a chemical explosion.

KIRK: I'll hang on to it. The fresh air seems to have made you trigger-happy.

2. Navy Cross

a. Authorization. 10 U.S.C. S6242.

b. Eligibility Requirements

(1) Awarded to individuals who, while serving in any capacity with the Navy or Marine Corps, distinguish themselves by extraordinary heroism, not justifying the award of the Medal of Honor.

(a) While engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States;

(b) While engaged in military operations involving conflict with an opposing foreign force; or

(c) While serving with friendly foreign forces engaged in an armed conflict against an opposing armed force, in which the United States is not a belligerent party.

(2) To warrant this distinctive decoration, the act or execution of duty must be performed in the presence of great danger, or at great personal risk, and must be performed in such a manner as to set individuals apart from their shipmates or fellow Marines. An accumulation of minor acts of heroism normally does not justify the award. The high standards SECNAVINST 1650.1H demanded must be borne in mind when recommending the award.

HISTORY

THIS DAY IN HISTORY

World War II

Dec 8, 1941:

The United States declares war on Japan

On this day, as America's Pacific fleet lay in ruins at Pearl Harbor, President Franklin Roosevelt requests, and receives, a declaration of war against Japan.

Leaning heavily on the arm of his son James, a Marine captain, FDR walked haltingly into the House of Representatives at noon to request a declaration of war from the House and address the nation via radio. "Yesterday," the president proclaimed, "December 7, 1941—a date which will live in infamy—the United States of America was suddenly and deliberately attacked by naval and air forces of the Empire of Japan. No matter how long it may take us to overcome this premeditated invasion, the American people in their righteous might will win through to absolute victory."

Roosevelt's 10-minute speech, ending with an oath-"So help us God"—was greeted in the House by thunderous applause and stamping of feet. Within one hour, the president had his declaration of war, with only one dissenting vote, from a pacifist in the House. FDR signed the declaration at 4:10 p.m., wearing a black armband to symbolize mourning for those lost at Pearl Harbor.

On both coasts, civilian defense groups were mobilized. In New York, Mayor Fiorello LaGuardia ordered the rounding up of Japanese nationals, who were transported to Ellis Island and held in custody indefinitely. In California, antiaircraft batteries were set up on Long Beach and the Hollywood Hills. Reports on supposed spy activity on the part of Japanese Americans began pouring into Washington, even as Japanese Americans paid for space in newspapers to declare unreservedly their loyalty to the United States. The groundwork was being laid for the tragic internment of Japanese Americans, thought a necessary caution at the time but regretted years later as a hysterical and bigoted response.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY

Sep 11, 2001:

Attack on America

At 8:45 a.m. on a clear Tuesday morning, an American Airlines Boeing 767 loaded with 20,000 gallons of jet fuel crashes into the north tower of the World Trade Center in New York City. The impact left a gaping, burning hole near the 80th floor of the 110-story skyscraper, instantly killing hundreds of people and trapping hundreds more in higher floors. As the evacuation of the tower and its twin got underway, television cameras broadcasted live images of what initially appeared to be a freak accident. Then, 18 minutes after the first plane hit, a second Boeing 767--United Airlines Flight 175--appeared out of the sky, turned sharply toward the World Trade Center, and sliced into the south tower at about the 60th floor. The collision caused a massive explosion that showered burning debris over surrounding buildings and the streets below. America was under attack.

The attackers were

Yugoslav Authorities Arrest Slobodan Milosevic

Aired March 30, 2001 - 5:12 p.m. ET

FRANK SESNO, CNN ANCHOR: We want to take you to the other major international story that we are tracking at this time involving the former Yugoslav President Slobodan Milosevic. Slobodan Milosevic, who presided over the disintegration of Yugoslavia as well as several wars in the Balkans to include the one in Bosnia, and of course, in Kosovo. Slobodan Milosevic, who is wanted in The Hague for war crimes -- alleged with crimes against humanity. He has been arrested -- CNN now confirms it.

We are joined on the phone by the Serbian Deputy Prime Minister Carko Kovac.

Prime Minister can you tell us, please, what the latest is on Mr. Milosevic -- where he is and what happens next?

CARKO KOVAC, SERBIAN DEPUTY PRIME MINISTER: Well, I want to be very frank: I can only confirm this unofficially. For an official confirmation, you have to wait until the Serbian ministry of justice and the Serbian government issue a formal statement. But, yes, I can confirm unofficially that he has been arrested and he has now has (sic) been brought to see the judge. So he is, right now, in the court.

SESNO: And the judge and the court which he is now facing involved which charges?

KOVAC: Well, as far as I know -- I am really not completely familiar with an indictment -- but as far as I know, financial wrongdoings, embezzlement of public funds and things like these.

SESNO: What is the public reaction? There was a scene outside his home prior to his arrest.

KOVAC: Well, you must understand that Belgrade is a city of more than 1 million people. If only 200 people, and mostly elderly people, came there to try, so to say, to prevent his arrest, this is not much, really; this is just a handful of people. So there is a lot of commotion. Obviously, this is big news here in Serbia, although somehow over the past few weeks everybody was expecting him to be arrested.

SESNO: Now, as I mentioned earlier, he is wanted in The Hague by the International Criminal Court there for alleged war crimes. Do you have any indication as to whether he will be delivered to The Hague? KOVAC: As far as I know, he will stay in Serbia -- for the moment he will face charges here. But I want to be very clear, and I want to state this quite openly, the fact that he's been charged only with these things does not exclude, and I think actually this will happen, that he is going to face further charges, and more and more charges will be against him. I think, ultimately, charges for war crimes at the end.

So the fact that these charges are brought against him right now does not exclude other charges and, perhaps at some point, but not near future -- not in a few weeks or a few months -- he might -- might -- be in The Hague, but we have to see.

SESNO: As you know, and as we have reported, there was a deadline of sorts imposed by the United States of tomorrow to see some progress made toward bringing Mr. Milosevic to justice, that being tied to about $100 million of U.S. aid. How much did that influence the events of today?

KOVAC: Well, frankly we are completely aware of the realities of this world, and obviously no government can function in some vacuum; you have to understand that many things in this world are interconnected. But basically, I must emphasize this, basically he's been arrested when we had sufficient evidence against him.

My return in 1998 was different though. I returned but I am a composite version of Tom Reagan and Kerry Burgess. I am not as tall as Tom Reagan and I am as tall as Kerry Burgess but I do not have the physical scars of Kerry Burgess, such as the gunshot wound scar he had on his shoulder.

As I walked through the cemetery, other dead people began to rise from under the ground and they mingled around until I told them they were free and they all went off somewhere. Kerry Burgess drove me back to here although we stopped at another cemetery along the way and the process repeated it and when we got back here I walked out into that cemetery nearby and the same thing happened there too

Frosty the Snowman (1969 TV Short)

Release Dates

USA 7 December 1969

http://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/harryconnickjr/frostythesnowman.html

HARRY CONNICK, JR.

"Frosty The Snowman"

Frosty the Snowman
Was a jolly happy soul
With a corncob pipe and a button nose
And two eyes made out of coal

Frosty the Snowman
Is a fairytale, they say
He was made of snow but the children know
How he came to life one day

There must have been some magic
In that old silk they found
For when they placed it on his head
He began to dance around

Frosty the Snowman
Was alive as he could be
Dns the children say he could laugh and play
Just the same as you and me

Thumpety thump thump
Thumpety thump thump
Look at Frosty go
Thumpety thump thump
Thumpety thump thump
Over the hills of snow

Frosty the Snowman
Knew the sun was hot that day
So he said, "Let's run and we'll have some fun
Now before I melt away"

Down to the village
With a brooomstick in his hand
Running here and there, all around the square,
Sayin', "Catch me if you can"

He led them down the streets of town
Right to the traffic cop
And he only paused a moment
When he heard him holler, "Stop!"

Frosty the Snowman
Had to hurry on his way
But he waved goodbye, sayin' "Don't you cry,
I'll be back again some day."

Thumpety thump thump
Thumpety thump thump
Look at Frosty go
Thumpety thump thump
Thumpety thump thump
Over the hills of snow

He'll be back
Yes he will
Again someday
See you next year Frosty!
