REI and Microsoft are among businesses praised by President Obama for programs designed to make their employees healthier and keep down health-care costs.

Local companies REI and Microsoft were among a handful of businesses praised Tuesday by President Obama
Obama told reporters at the White House after an hourlong discussion with business leaders, including Cecily Hall, Microsoft's director of U.S. benefits, and Sally Jewell, CEO of REI.
Obama drew laughter introducing the outdoor-oriented retailer, saying REI "has to be fit since they're a fitness company."
Obama also singled out Safeway and Johnson & Johnson for holding down health-care costs by encouraging employees to exercise

Gabrielle Giffords of Arizona was shot in the head Saturday by a gunman who opened fire outside a grocery store during a meeting with voters, killing a federal judge and four others in a rampage that rattled the country and left politicians fearful for their safety. "It is a tragedy for Arizona, and a tragedy for our entire country," President Barack Obama declared.
Giffords was among at least 10 people wounded, and the hospital said her outlook was optimistic as she was responding to commands from doctors despite having a bullet go through her head. The death toll included a 9-year-old girl

"We save a little over $200 every time we replace what would have been an emergency-room visit with a house call," Hall said.
Kent-based REI, according to the White House, helps employees take up outdoor activities by offering discounts on gear and apparel purchases, free rentals and time off.
It also reduces the amount employees pay for health coverage if they adopt several healthful habits

Based on how far out of the socket the long arm of coincidence is stretched in this film, it is a lot closer to a Tex Avery cartoon then it is any kind of film noir genre. American Richard Arlen, long past his prime and cast in order to have an American actor heading the cast so the film might actually induce an American booking (an observation based on the reality of selling tickets and with no intentions of knocking the other-wise good all British cast), gets innocently involved with a drug ring when he is left a package containing their stolen goods. Some stuff happens but he and a detective meet and eventually round up the crooks.

I "remember" that I was working out of Rich's house for a while in those first days. On my first day, I had 2 printers that I was supposed to fix and I was very bored. I was working in Rich's garage and it was cold inside. I can't "remember" that sales guys name. I "remember" riding around with him to customer visits but there wasn't really anything happening. I "remember" how Rich told me he was some kind of super-sales guy but I puzzled over how he told me he only had 2 suits and that seemed odd to me for somebody that was supposed to be a hot-shot sales guy.
I "remember" he was talking on the phone in Rich's home office room as I was sitting in there and I had just been shooting at an aluminum can with a BB-gun because I was bored and I was commenting about how well I had shot the can. He was talking to an Admiral as I was sitting in there and it must have been on speakerphone, although I find that detail curious, and the sales guy was telling the Admiral that Rich and I were Navy and that Admiral first asked how junior was Rich in the Navy, but then he quickly corrected himself, I guess to not sound arrogant, and asked how senior was Rich in the Navy.

I find that conversation with the Admiral confusing because at some points, it seems the sales guy was talking to him on the phone without me being able to hear, but then I puzzle over how I know certain details about the conversation.

Also, "Salesman." I saw that in a dream while sleeping recently. I saw myself going through an induction process in the United States Marine Corps and I woke up understanding that I was dreaming of my actual experience in 1990. I saw a document that indicated I was being inducted to the United States Marine Corps with the officer grade of Chief Warrant Officer 2. I saw in the dream another document associated with my induction and that document indicated I had been assigned the informal name "Salesman."
I had started this note with only the detail about the VCR in mind and then later I decided to tack on my comments about my nickname, which is something I only very recently started to think about. I have never considered myself a salesman of anything. I have worked to increase sales of products that I provided technical support for but the sales aspect was secondary to the technical nature of my activities. I don't talk enough to be a salesman.

Tough luck, Chester, but,it's a tough world out there, Steve Nought, going back to his notes. Chester's early response to the virus had been a little unsettling-only half the time programmed-but it had been brought about by his grossly reduced liver function. It couldn't, be helped. Some people would get hit sooner than others because of differing physical vulnerabilities, So the outbreak would start unevenly. It shouldn't matter in the eventual effects, though it would alert people sooner than he hoped it would. That would cause a run on the vaccines Steve Berg and his shop were developing. "A" would be widely distributed after the rush to manufacture it. "B" would be more closely held, assuming that he and his team could indeed get it ready for use. "A" would go out to everybody, while "B" would go only to those people who were supposed to survive, people who understood what it was all about, or who would accept their survival and get on with things with the rest of the crew.
Killgore shook his head. There was a lot of stuff left to be done, and as usual, not enough time to do it.
Clark and Stanley went over the takedown immediately upon their arrival in the morning, along with Peter Covington, still sweaty from his morning workout with Team-1. Chavez and his people would just be waking up after their long day on the European mainland.

The Night Stalker version of the McDonnell-Douglas AH-6 Loach had been invented for Task Force 160; now redesignated the 160th Special Operations Aviation Regiment-SOAR-based at Fort Campbell, Kentucky. They were probably the wildest and craziest bunch of aviators in the world, who worked on the sly with brother aviators from selected other cauntries Britain and Israel were the two most often allowed into the 160 compound at Campbell. In a real sense, getting, the choppers and flight crews assigned to Rainbow would be the easy part..The hard part would be getting the fixed wing transport needed to move the chopper to where they needed it. It'd be about as hard to hide as an elephant in a schoolyard. With Night Stalker they'd have all manner of surveillance gear, a special silent rotor-and Santa on his fucking sleigh with eight tiny reindeer, Clark's mind went on. It would never happen, despite all the drag he had in Washington and London.
"Okay, I'll call Washington for authorization to get some aviators on the team. Any problem getting some aircraft here for them to play with?"
"Shouldn't be," Stanley replied.

The V-22 Osprey was the first aircraft designed from the ground up to meet the needs of all four U.S. Armed services. In partnership with Bell Helicopter Textron, Boeing Helicopters built the revolutionary new tiltrotor aircraft that takes off and lands vertically like a helicopter.
Once airborne, its blades can be rotated to convert the aircraft to a turboprop airplane capable of high-speed, high-altitude flight. Boeing was assigned responsibility for the fuselage, all subsystems, digital avionics and fly-by-wire flight-control systems.
The 30-ton aircraft can transport assault troops and cargo, undertake combat search and rescue and fleet logistic support, and provide long-range transportation for special operations.
By 1997, requirements called for production of 523 Ospreys, with the first to enter service during 1999. The first V-22 built to production standards made its first flight in February 1997 and was delivered March 15, 1997, to the V-22 Integrated Test Team at the Patuxent River Naval Air Warfare Center in Maryland. Eleven were produced by the end of 2000.
After the crash of a V-22 on Dec. 11, 2000, the aircraft did not return to flight until May 29, 2002. Five were flying by the end of 2002. The first passenger to fly aboard a V-22 after it returned to flight was Lt. Gen. Michael W. Hagee, incoming commandant of the Marine Corps, who in January 2003 flew in the cockpit of MV-22 Osprey aircraft No. 21 at Naval Air Station, Patuxent River, Md. The flight lasted about 15 minutes.

In 1980 Fossey returned to the United States to accept a visiting associate professorship at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York. While teaching, Fossey also completed Gorillas in the Mist (1983; film 1988). Back in Rwanda, Fossey resumed her campaign against poachers, taking increasingly drastic measures to protect the Virunga gorillas. On December 26, 1985, her slain body was discovered near her campsite. In 'The Green Dragon' gambling club, operated by Hu Chang (Ernest Borgnine), a merchant marine, McMillen (Jon Hall), bets the last of his money. He is cheated out of his winnings. In 1925, in Damascus, the patriotic rebels of Syria are fighting against the invader French forces. The powerful weapons smuggler Harry Smith is an amoral dealer taking advantage of the situation. I had another dream about being in the water, but this one doesn't seem as important as that one the other day about the carrier. In this one this morning, it was something about a ship dropping its anchor and leaving it. But I want to say that the anchor was discarded until they realized they needed it. I can't remember a lot of details from that dream. I do remember that I was swimming in the water above where the anchor was dropped. I can still kind of visualize the ship and I'm not really sure if it was a U.S. Navy ship. I also want to say all of this occurred in a port somewhere in China. I also want to say they were using something that looked like the Liberty Bell as the anchor. In the dream, I dived below the surface and I did some kind of back-flip to begin the dive and I was pleased with myself for that maneuver, but as I have written other times, there was some kind of delay.

The Navy Cross
THE YEARS of the "Great War" were not easy ones for the men and women in the naval service. The Herculean task of transporting and escorting the hundreds of thousands of troops of the American Expeditionary Force to Europe, the growing pains of fielding new aviation and submarine elements and the savage fighting of our sailors and Marines on battlefields across France all lay at the feet of the naval service. Along with this came an increase in the size of the naval service to its largest at that time, and the task of working hand-in-hand with Allied counterparts.
New to this experience was the European custom of one nation decorating heroes of another nation. The United States, with the Medal of Honor as its sole decoration, was caught unprepared not only for this custom, but also had no appropriate award to recognize heroism of a level less than that which would merit the Medal of Honor and no decoration to reward the myriad acts of meritorious non-combat service that the war would spur.
The U.S. Army shared this dilemma and with the aid of President Woodrow Wilson and the Congress in early and mid-1918 instituted its Distinguished Service Cross and Distinguished Service Medal (DSM) with clear guidelines for the award of the Distinguished Service Cross for combat heroism and the DSM award for distinguished non-combat duty in a position of great responsibility. This pair was available in time for awarding during World War I.
Parallel awards were created a year later for the Navy and Marine Corps, months after the armistice and amid the massive demobilization of our forces.
No prouder decorations exist today than the Navy Cross and the Navy Distinguished Service Medal, but their creation and early award were fraught with controversy, ambiguity and confusion.
As enacted 04 Feb. 1919, the Navy Cross was the naval services third-highest award and could be awarded for both combat heroism and for other distinguished service. Many, for instance, were earned for extraordinary diving and salvage feats. As originally third in precedence behind the Medal or Honor and the Navy Distinguished Service Medal, more than one Navy Cross recipient regarded its award as a "snub" in lieu of the Distinguished Service Medal.
The same act established the Distinguished Service Medal. Both decorations could be awarded retroactive to 06 April 1917. It would be 23 years and a 07 Aug. 1942 action by Congress that would place the Navy Cross just beneath the Medal of Honor, and limit its award to combat-only recognition.
The Navy Cross was designed by James Earle Fraser, a distinguished sculptor, member of the nation's Fine Arts Commisson and designer of the obverse of the Victory Medal and an early version of the Navy Distinguished Service Medal. The Navy Cross' arguable resemblance to Great Britain's Navy Distinguished Service Cross is noteworthy, but not elaborated upon in any records. Fraser experimented with the image of a World War I-era destroyer on the medal, but finally opted for the more timeless, flowing lines of a 15th-century caraval or sailing ship.
Subtle variations have marked the evolution of the Navy Cross from 1919 to the present. One constant has been the actual medal, which has been struck from the same die and is of three-part construction: the cross itself and the front and back medallions, which are struck separately and subsequently soldered together. Current forgers almost always strike their fakes in one piece, allowing the studied eye one method of detecting frauds.
