Speed racer

Somewhere I was writing about my memory of Monaco in 1990 and of how I was disappointed that we arrived in port too late to see the Grand Prix race. All the road barricades and stuff was still up. We must have just missed it.

But then that must have been something else, some other race. I don't now recall.

Yeah, and Brazil. That would explain a lot of unexplained thoughts I have had for a very long time.

Monaco was the last port I visited when I was still assigned to the USS Wainwright CG 28 and I left the ship there for an airplane flight back to the United States. The ship continued its deployment and I was onboard for most of the deployment to the Mediterranean Sea. I am trying to rack my brain, while not over-concentrating, on the period of time from late July 1989 through the end of the year before I left the ship. I have been thinking she told me to play dumb when I returned to the real world in July 1989. I have been trying to recall specific details but I have begun to suspect that I was being administered the security drug during the time-frame so any possible memory I could regain is going to be hard to reacquire. I can visualize still to a certain degree the ports we were at during that deployment in late 1989.

What was that port during our Med cruise in 1989? The ending of this film got me thinking of that. That would have been late 1989 or very early 1989. The Fire Controlman Senior Chief Petty Officer of our division, who became the Master Chief Petty Officer after I left, told me he was glad I had gone up on the deck of the forecastle that day. We were in port somewhere in the Med, I don't think that was in Naples Italy, but it could have been, but I reject that notion because as I recall no one liked Naples and if a riot was going to happen then we expect it there, but it could have been somewhere. We were in Valencia Spain, which was a place I enjoyed a lot and had never been there before but I don't think that happened there but who really knows because I was on duty the day the rally happened on the pier and thus was sober while usually when on the beach in the Med, I usually was not and there were always girls from Britain. No matter what port we were in, there were always girls who told us they were on holiday from Britain. So where was that? France? Toulon France? Maybe. That was my last stop before flying back to the United States, similar to the 1991 film where they are going to Mexico, I was riding from Monaco France to Toulon France in the back of the mail truck and I was seriously hung over from drinking too much and I was crashed on a pile of boxes in the back of the mail truck that would take me to the US military flight back to Charleston SC. A serious windstorm had blown through Monaco just about that time. The plane flew for what seemed to be only a few minutes before we had several hours of wait time at another airport to repair something that had gone wrong with the airplane.

What did I start off to write here? I don't recall. The master chief. The riot on the pier. They were protesting the United States Navy and nuclear weapons. The senior chief was glad that I went up on deck as he asked because I stood there and looked down at the people on the pier and they were quite agitated and I recall one person in the group took a trash container and threw it on to the brow that led from the pier to the quarterdeck of the ship but that was about it. They might have yelled a lot. I don't really remember a lot else other than that. We might have been in Spain. Perhaps Rota Spain. I recall we spent all of Christmas and New Years in Palma Spain, much to my pleasure because I loved Mallorca, but I don't the protests happened there. I also recall being very pissed off in 1989 because we were leaving for that deployment to the Med. I don't recall specifically when we left but I recall that was very soon after the Hurricane Hugo and why I should have even been pissed off about being deployed overseas on the ship I was assigned in the United States Navy fleet, I do not know.

The Captain’s Yacht. That is what I was trying to remember here. I can’t remember anything about that particular boat on a Burke-class destroyer, but I remember that when I left the Wainwright in 1990 to return to the States, we were anchored off the coast of Monaco and I took the Captain’s yacht, or did we call it the Captains’ gig, in to port.

I was thinking this morning or last night about all that commotion in the Ironman community a few years ago about people racing under other people's name. That would seem to tie in with my theory about Tom Warren and Tom Watson. They are probably real people, but I think they know I was there. Not exactly clear on this, but it means something. I suspect that people were all talking about something along these lines and that produced the buzz about the "phantom" competitors.

A very detailed dream about being on a Luge course at an Olympic competition. I can remember that I made two timed runs through the course. I can remember very clearly the first part of the course going down a large hill and going very fast. But the weird part is that I was going backwards and that I had to make a 90-degree turn about half-way through the course, which was very tricky. There was a wall there at the turn that I would have hit if I hadn't got it right.

I wonder if this is the source of that memory of a child named Charlie Brown who was smearing crap from his diaper onto the refrigerator. That was when Thedia was married to James Nevells and he was in the Marines. I was over at the house of one of his fellow soldiers and Charlie Brown was his kid. I pointed out to the wife that Charlie was smearing poop on the fridge. I can still visualize that. I can also visualize watching "Speed Racer" on their television. I think that kid also crapped in his father's uniform shoe.

There is also something familar about that sense of jolting awake as I wonder why I have similar artificial memories from long ago.

Eleven hours into the flight, the crew had been awake for over 16 hours, having been awakened about 5 hours before launch. So it was time for Frank Borman to start his scheduled 7-hour sleep period. It proved difficult to sleep. NASA had decided that at least one crewmember should be awake at all times to deal with any issues that might arise. But the constant radio chatter with the ground and the air circulation fans made it hard to sleep. As well as this, sleeping in space is a somewhat unnatural experience—you cannot rest your head on a pillow and Bill Anders said that he would suddenly jolt awake with the sensation that he was falling.

About an hour after starting his sleep period, Borman requested clearance to take a Seconal sleeping pill, but the pill had little effect. After Borman slept for seven hours fitfully, he awoke feeling ill. He vomited twice, and had a bout of diarrhea that left the spacecraft full of small globules of vomit and feces. The crew cleaned up as best as they could. Borman decided that he did not want the world to know about his medical problems but Lovell and Anders still wanted to tell the ground. They decided to use the Data Storage Equipment (DSE), which could be used by the crew to tape voice recordings and telemetry, which were then dumped to the ground at high speed. After recording a description of Borman's illness they requested that mission control check the recording, as the crew "would like an evaluation of the voice comments".
