SIOUX CITY -- Retired United Airlines Capt. Al Haynes on Saturday returned to Sioux City to do the honors at a ribbon-cutting ceremony for the new MidAmerican Museum of Aviation & Transportation near where his DC-10 crashed 21 years ago.

He also gave the keynote address the museum's dinner Saturday night at the Sioux City Convention Center..

Haynes has been credited for keeping cool in a crisis and miraculously steering Flight 232 to the airport on July 19, 1989, after the plane lost its hydraulics and No. 2 engine. The DC-10 carrying 296 people cartwheeled in a fiery ball down a runway at the airport and into a cornfield, with 184 passengers and crew surviving. Another 112 died.

The Journal asked Haynes the following:

When was the last time you were in Sioux City in addition to the 15th anniversary of the crash in 2004?

Haynes: "I came back for the movie premier" in 1992 of the television movie, "Crash Landing: The Rescue of Flight 232," which starred Oscar winner Charlton Heston who portrayed Haynes. Much of the movie was filmed in Sioux City.

Did you fly here from Seattle? (He lives in a suburb.)

Haynes: No, I flew in from Washington, D.C. I gave a speech to the FBI.

Al Haynes: 232, Roger. Ease the power back now. Left turns. Left turns. Easy... Too fast!

My name's McGuire,
from Boston, Massachusetts.
Oh, you're American.
Irish born.
I went back for personal reasons.
A stroll would be delightful,
Mr. McGuire.
Parasol.
In my imagination,
America is a wonderfully modern place.
- Am I right?
- Modern as modern can be.
The people, the culture,
the industry.
- What about the land?
- I beg your pardon?
This girl's got it in her head
that they're giving land away for free.
That's true. Oklahoma territory.
The west's opening up.
- I told you, boy.
- Can't be good land.
It's the finest in the world.
Seeds flourish in it.
The cattle that grow upon it
are fat as elephants.
How do you get it, Mr. McGuire?
Is it there when you step off the boat?
Oh, no. You have to travel
miles or so.
When you get there, you'll have to
run for the land in a race.
A race?

I didn't expect it
to be so complicated.
We're very fortunate. Any difficulty
can be overcome with money.
Excuse me. I'd like
to speak with Mr. McGuire alone.
Mr. McGuire, I do have money...
but it's in the form of spoons.
- Spoons?
- Ancient spoons made of silver.
I'd planned to sell them
when I arrived in Boston.
Well, I can recommend a couple of shops
that will treat you honestly.

Your great friend
Mr. McGuire has vanished.
You want American dollars?
Oh, there he is!
Mr. McGuire!
Over here!
Ah, there you are.
Hey, mister, you Irish?
I can take you to the ward boss.
Need work? Need lodging?
There are people who hate the Irish.
You can't get nothing without the ward
boss. He's the biggest man in Boston.
Go fleece somebody else, boy.
I know the games of these shysters.
Come on, Miss Christie.
I'll find you a suitable hotel.
Cab!
Thank goodness for Mr. McGuire.

Flying Blind

The war in Afghanistan has exposed a new level of U.S. expertise in pilotless aircraft. Meet the Global Hawk. and prepare to hear a strange announcement on a future airline flight: This is your computer speaking . . .

By William Speed Weed, Collier Schorr Thursday, August 01, 2002

At precisely 0600 hours most mornings, Lt. Col. Michael J. Guidry's CD alarm clock snaps on, and he's up and headed to his job testing the most revolutionary airplane ever built. Using his truck's cruise control to keep him from hotdogging down the Mojave Desert roads, Guidry traverses Edwards Air Force Base, driving right by the spot where the original Right Stuff man himself, Chuck Yeager, landed the Bell X-1 after breaking the sound barrier in 1947, and arrives at the hangar where the 21st-century version of flying glory, the RQ-4A Global Hawk, waits for him.

Although Guidry's plane resembles the sleek 1950s U-2 spy plane in length, height, and weight, the plane of the future looks a lot more like a killer whale than a flying machine.

The biggest surprise about the Global Hawk is that it contains no surprises at all. Its technology is "off the shelf," says Guidry. It simply combines the pre-existing technology of drones with the technology of existing autopilots. Radio-controlled pilotless drones have been used as target practice at least since the 1940s, and three-axis (pitch, yaw, roll) autopilots were first placed on commercial aircraft more than 60 years ago.

The Air Force, for example, has a new drone that is also celebrated for its surveillance work in Afghanistan. The RQ-1 (in Air Force notation, R stands for reconnaissance, Q stands for unmanned) is a delicate, 27-foot-long, 1,130-pound, upside-down flying spoon

Formation flying, dogfighting, carrier ops: If demanding military flying can be done handily by autonomous aircraft, why not autonomous airliners carrying hundreds of passengers? People already trust their lives to simple automated systems such as traffic lights and light rail.

Beyond reliability concerns, such as what happens if the two control computers fail while passengers are at 35,000 feet, engineers worry that computers can't improvise very well. "Machines need information," says Hansman. "If I can write the rule, the machine can do it. But if I can't write the rule ahead of time, machines don't do well." Humans, on the other hand, can think on their feet. In July 1989, for example, on United Airlines Flight 232, something went wrong that no one had predicted: The tail engine of the DC-10 threw its fan rotor, slicing through both main and backup hydraulic lines connecting the pilot to control surfaces such as the rudder and the ailerons. The plane banked hard right and would have bored into a cornfield, killing all 296 people on board, but the captain and the flight crew invented a solution. By adjusting the two wing-mounted engine throttles one at a time, the pilots were able to steer the plane crudely with differential thrust— like steering a rowboat by pulling on one oar or the other. They managed to crash land at the Sioux City, Iowa, airport and save 184 people aboard.

If an autopilot alone had been flying that DC-10, no one would have survived, but engineers at McDonnell Douglas subsequently programmed autopilots to steer a rudderless plane by using throttles.

TROPICAL STORM BARRY SWIRLS TO LIFE

AP , Associated Press

Jul. 13, 1989 1:38 PM ET

MIAMI (AP) _ Tropical Storm Barry has swirled to life, packing 40 mph winds but posing no immediate threat to land, the National Weather Service said today.

At noon EDT, the center of the storm was near latitude 24.5 north, longtitude 55.5 west, or about 675 miles northeast of the northern Leeward Islands in the Lesser Antilles.

That was precisely the same position the storm held six hours earlier.

Satellite pictures indicated Barry became nearly stationary during the night, forecasters said. Some strengthening was expected before tonight, but the storm's steering currents have diminished and its movement was expected to be slow and erratic.

Barry, which had been moving northwest, turned sharply to the north Wednesday night and posed no immediate threat to land, said forecaster Hal Gerrish at the National Hurricane Center in suburban Coral Gables.

The storm formed as a depression earlier this week off west Africa. It became the Atlantic hurricane season's second named storm when its maximum sustained winds reached 39 mph Wednesday.

If winds reach 74 mph, it would become the first hurricane of the June- November season.

The season's first named storm was Allison, which caused widespread flood damage in Texas and Louisiana last month.
