1952: UNIVAC Univac was the primary product of the Eckert-Mauchly computer company. Not only was it faster, but it demonstrated the shift from base-ten to binary code. A Univac was used by CBS news to predict the outcome of the 1952 Presidential Election. That event brought computing into the public eye, according to many historians. It wouldn't be long before scientific focus shifted to microprocessors.
[Not only was it binary machine language, but to manually program it, you had to start with base-10, convert that mentally to base-8, and then mentally convert that to base-2, or binary.]

I caught the last part of the first "Rambo" last night and I realized he said something about going to Las Vegas with one of his buddies, who I think was later killed. Then I started wondering if that was why Ken Fagan invited me to Vegas that time to give a speech to his customer. That was either 2000 or 2001. I remember that I was invited down there again to a group meeting of my assigned customer, IBM Global Services. I was writing the other day wondering if I, or my family, got Microsoft into IBM back when they got that contract to develop software for the original PC. I can't remember the name of Fagan's customer, but I might recognize it if I saw it. That sort of thing happens a lot. I can't remember details from my real life, but I am wondering if I have started recognizing those details when I see them. Anyway, I can't remember the topic I presented to Fagan's customer, it was Fagan's choice, and I didn't know much about the topic. One other coworker went down there with us and presented before me. He seemed rattled to be in front of the crowd and I remember how he was throwing his notes down on the floor, leaving them in disarray.

LONDON - Like many of her noble subjects, Britain's Queen Elizabeth II is bowing this summer to the sometimes cruel realities of modern economics.
Over the years, most of the stately homes in Britain have admitted the paying public to help finance upkeep. The list includes parts of Windsor Castle and the Princess of Wales' ancestral estate, Althorp House.
But never - until now - has the world's most famous royal residence and headquarters of the British monarchy been opened for public tours.
For eight weeks (beginning yesterday), however, that all is changing as Buckingham Palace hosts an anticipated 450,000 visitors willing to pay an adult admission of $12 for a peek at 18 of the more than 600 rooms in the palace.
The queen's motive for inviting the public to view the sumptuous staterooms of Buckingham Palace is a variation on the one that has opened all those other stately homes: She hopes to help pay for restoration of Windsor Castle, which was badly damaged in a fire last November.

The decision is being widely applauded here as giving her subjects a chance to see their monarchical heritage up close. And the anticipated lineup for the 7,000 tickets to be sold daily is already being referred to as "the mother of all queues."
"It's going to be the No. 1 attraction," said Isabel Coy, an official with the British Tourist Authority. "It's our living heritage. The real Royal Family runs a business from there. It's only open for a limited time, so there's a sort of exclusive cachet."

Ayrton Senna cruised to a record fourth consecutive Formula One victory in winning the Monaco Grand Prix Sunday at Monte Carlo.

Israeli Astronaut Bound for Space Shuttle to Visit Boeing

CANOGA PARK — Israel's first astronaut is scheduled today to tour the plant that will be responsible for helping him blast into outer space.
Col. Ilan Ramon, a decorated fighter pilot in the Israeli air force, will join Rep. Brad Sherman (D-Sherman Oaks) at Boeing's Rocketdyne Propulsion and Power headquarters.
Shuttle officials have yet to set a date for Ramon's flight.
"When he goes up, he will be boosted by three of our engines made right here in Canoga Park," said Boeing spokesman Dan Beck.
Ramon's tour will include visits to the Rocketdyne Operations Support Center, where engineers monitor space shuttle launches, the manufacturing plant for the shuttle's main engines and the Boeing Leadership and Learning Center, where 50 years of space hardware is displayed.
"This will be an opportunity for Col. Ramon to thank some of the people at Boeing for their careful work," said Sherman

JERUSALEM — The remains of Israeli astronaut Ilan Ramon have been found in the wreckage of the space shuttle Columbia and will be brought to Israel for burial, the Israeli army said Wednesday.
"This is a relief to all of us, especially the family," said Brig. Gen. Rani Falk, an Israeli air force attache in Washington. "NASA informed us officially that Ilan Ramon, may his name be blessed, was identified, and we can bring him for burial in Israel in the coming days."
Ramon's remains were identified through DNA matching, officials said.

In 1998, the McDonnell Douglas AV-8B Harrier II was the only fixed-wing vertical/short takeoff and landing (V/STOL) aircraft in the free world. Its ability to take off vertically makes it one of the most maneuverable combat aircraft in service, and it can zoom out of the range of enemy fire extremely quickly.
Based on the 1957 British-designed Hawker-Siddley "Kestrel," the AV-8B Harrier II was developed by a team representing McDonnell Douglas, British Aerospace and Rolls-Royce. Production of the St. Louis, Mo.-built AV-8B began in 1981, and more than 340 Harrier IIs were produced. They carried more fuel than the AV-8As and had higher lift and better cruise characteristics.
In 1991, Harrier IIs were the first U.S. Marine Corps tactical aircraft to arrive for Operation Desert Storm over the Persian Gulf. During the 42 days of combat, 86 Harrier IIs flew 3,380 combat sorties

The McDonnell Douglas (now Boeing) AV-8B Harrier II is a second-generation vertical/short takeoff and landing (V/STOL) ground-attack aircraft. An Anglo-American development of the British Hawker Siddeley Harrier, the Harrier II is the final member of the Harrier family that started with the Hawker Siddeley P.1127 in the early 1960s. The AV-8B is primarily used for light attack or multi-role missions, and is typically operated from small aircraft carriers, large amphibious assault ships and simple forward operating bases. Overview
The AV-8B Harrier II is a subsonic attack aircraft. It retains the basic layout of the Hawker Siddeley Harrier, with horizontal stabilizers and shoulder-mounted wings featuring prominent anhedral. The aircraft is powered by a single Rolls-Royce Pegasus turbofan engine; the Pegasus's two intakes and four synchronized vectorable nozzles are located close to the turbine; two nozzles are near the forward, cold end of the engine and two nozzles are near the rear, hot end of the engine. This arrangement contrasts with most fixed-wing aircraft, which have their engine nozzles at the rear. The Harrier II also has smaller valve-controlled nozzles in the nose, tail and wingtips to provide control at low airspeeds.
