There was that dream I had the other night, where I was inside a missile. I remembered today the similarity with this movie, in that Cochrane converted an ICBM into his warp ship. But why would someone create a connection between me and Cochrane? I didn't create warp drive in the past only to have someone block my memory of that, did I? It's funny, when I read something the other day about Data arguing with Einstein, it reminded me of something I was writing in my journal back in the early '90s. I was wondering why it was impossible to travel faster than the speed of light. A couple years ago I was writing about it again. The idea presented itself to me about why it was impossible, something about atoms not being able to work because electrons could not transfer energy faster than the speed of light. I wondered if it was possible to create some kind of process to transfer energy to those atoms, not unlike a cell's mitochondria works. Today I have been wondering if anything I remember about the past is real. Do I have a different past? Am I really who I think I am? The stuff I imagine happening to me sometimes, did that stuff really happen? I wonder if these movies and tv shows have actually been sort of inoculations, to keep me from questioning my reality. I do question reality sometimes, but it wasn't until I saw that Matrix movie a while back, did I really start to wonder about reality. But it didn't seem to matter, I wasn't overly concerned that I may be living that kind of false reality. I still don't think I am living such an extreme unreality as in the Matrix, but I wonder if there is a divergence point in my life, a shadow, a distorted period. Or have I been living a life like in the movie Soldier, or maybe like in Blade Runner, where Rachael, and I assume Harrison Ford's character, have false memories of their life. Am I Harrison Ford's character in this reality? A replicant searching for replicants?

I can't remember the name but I found it on the map because I can remember geographical features of the area, such as that creek next to it. after I walked down to the lake to survey the swim course, I wondered if Osama bin Laden was the race director. I commented something about how when they start an invasion, they go after the strongest people first. I am wondering today if, in the course of my professional military duties, I had been developing tactics of that very nature against military adversaries of the U.S. before my memory was blanked. I have been thinking that I was supposed to be awakened from this "hibernation" a long time ago.

I was writing earlier, yesterday I think, about the time I and the other people on Taverner’s team went to see “Mission: Impossible 2” at that theatre in downtown Bellevue. Wasn’t that the time, when we were leaving the theatre and were walking outside, when Sharon slapped me on the butt? I thought that was a pretty weird thing for her to do. If you know Sharon, you would wonder why she did that. I was walking in front of everyone when she did it, as I passed by her.
She is one of the last people I would imagine doing something like that to people she worked with.

As I was riding the bus to the VA, I remembered something else that happened at Microsoft. I was complaining to a friend one day about how Sharon Bjeletich had put a curtain up at the entrance to her cube so no one could see in. That was the second cube I sat in after moving to that new floor in the Bellevue office. Sharon sat two cubicles from me. Eddy Hahn was in the cube between us. I believe that Sharon put that curtain up because she, and everyone else, knew that there were cameras outside the building staring in at me and she was being captured in the frame. I am certain that happened in 2000 because I remember something from Halloween when I was still on that floor and by Halloween of 2001, we were all out at Issaquah. Halloween of 1999, I was still a TAM and I remember another TAM dressed up as a hockey player and he asked me if I was trying to work. Eddy is that guy I wrote about that worked in Las Vegas before Microsoft. He is from Budapest. I can't remember where Sharon was from originally but she is the one I wrote about that reminds me of Sarajevo.

Life of a Mother Accused of Killing Offers No Clues

On the evening of Oct. 24, Susan Smith went to her aerobics class. The next morning, she took her children to a baby sitter and went to work at her job as a secretary. That night, investigators say, Mrs. Smith pulled her car to the edge of a deep lake, stepped out, put the gearshift in drive and let it roll down the boat ramp into the black water. Her two little boys, buckled snugly in their safety seats, died under the lake.
To the people of Union who grew up with Mrs. Smith, who remember tying ribbons in her hair when she was a little girl, who enjoyed her smile -- everyone talks about the smile -- it is as if there are two Susans. They talk over and over about what caused her to kill her own children, but nothing, for many people, will ever explain how this woman, who seemed to be a perfect mother and so hard-working and devout, could do such a thing.
"I believed her, right up to the end," said Juliaette Kerhulas, of Mrs. Smith's story that a young black man had ordered her out of her burgundy 1990 Mazda on the night of Oct. 25, then driven away with 3-year-old Michael and 14-month-old Alexander in the back seat.
People live in Union County to get away from stories like this. On Sunday evenings, the streets are nearly deserted because almost everyone is in church. Crime usually means a missing stereo, and deputies know the handful of people in the county jail by their first names and the first names of their mamas and daddies. Susan Smith, 23, was part of this world, and of their values, or at least that is what the townspeople believed as she grew up among them. The fear and pain that she has brought to them was worsened by the simple fact that she belonged to them.
In tragedies like this, there is always shock and a certain amount of revisionist history, making people seem better, somehow more pure, than they were. But for Susan Smith, there is apparently nothing in public records, or in the minds of people here, that even hints at a capacity for murder. But there has been unhappiness.
Her mother, Linda, was raised in a mill village in Buffalo, a community just outside Union, and married a blue-collar worker who shot himself when Susan was 5. The family was rescued from poverty when her mother remarried Bev Russell, an investment broker with an office on Union's Main Street.
Susan was a bookworm, a well-behaved child, not popular the way cheerleaders and class clowns were, but liked. She was in the National Honor Society.
"She had always been the sweetest girl," said 23-year-old Jennifer Pegram, who went to high school with Mrs. Smith.
She did not go to college, which is not unusual in small Southern towns, where the prospect of leaving home, even for a little while, is distasteful if not frightening. She wanted to stay in Union and married a high school sweetheart, David Smith, a clean-cut young man whom the local girls called "cute." He had a secure future as an assistant manager with the Winn-Dixie grocery store.
She went to work at a mill in town and worked her way up to an office job. She and her husband ate at Gene's Hamburgers and Hotdogs on Friday nights and went to the Buffalo United Methodist Church on Sunday mornings.
"She was clean," said Gene Gregory, who runs the restaurant where the Smiths were regular customers. "Almost everybody's got a little dirt on them, but she was clean."
The Smith marriage, which produced two children, lasted just three years. Mrs. Smith filed for divorce in September, claiming her husband cheated on her. They had been separated intermittently over the past year. She started dating Tom Findlay, the son of the wealthy owner of the mill where she worked. But friends said the relationship lasted just a short while, and Mr. Findlay ended it one week before Mrs. Smith reported the children missing.
People here have heard the possible motives for the killings -- that she was frustrated by the rigors of raising a family on $16,000 a year; that she was sad over a broken marriage, and the most chilling one, that she may have killed the two little boys because she believed Mr. Findlay would not want her because of her ready-made family. While the explanations will someday become a dark part of the county's otherwise sleepy history, they will never explain the coldness and cruelty of the act to people who see their babies, any babies, as the most precious things in life.
People here say they might have understood the Oct. 25 drowning of the boys if the mother had gone mad, but the most credible motive county investigators seem to have in this case is romance, or at least the desire for one. Mr. Findlay broke up with Mrs. Smith in a "Dear John" letter in which he said he was not ready for a relationship involving children.
Mr. Findlay, 27, gave investigators a copy of the letter, which ultimately led to Mrs. Smith's arrest and confession, after nine days of her repeated claims that her sons had been abducted.
"I was not ready to assume the important responsibilities of being a father," Mr. Findlay said in a written statement issued through his lawyers. But at no point during the relationship, he wrote in the statement, did he suggest "that her children were the only obstacle in any potential relationship with her."
Sheriff Howard Wells of Union County would not release the "Dear John" letter or talk about it, but another investigator said it gave them their first solid lead and, ultimately, a motive for murder. Investigators have known about the letter for days, but continued to search for the fictional young black man whom the tearful Mrs. Smith accused of taking her children.
Cathy Allen, whose son was in high school with Mrs. Smith, said: "My question is, what kind of society do we have when a girl who has so much going for her would resort to this? She was such a sweet, loving little girl."
Mrs. Allen smiled as she talked, as if remembering a time before the horrors of the past 10 days. The image no one can get out of their minds is the thought of the little boys in the seat, as the water closed in.

Single feed baits are chemicals sufficiently dangerous that the first dose is sufficient to kill.
Rodents are difficult to kill with poisons because their feeding habits reflect their place as scavengers. They will eat a small bit of something and wait, and if they don't get sick, they continue. In addition to this specific metabolic disruption, massive toxic doses of 4-hydroxycoumarin or 4-hydroxythiacoumarin and indandione anticoagulants cause damage to tiny blood vessels (capillaries), increasing their permeability, causing diffuse internal bleedings (haemorrhagias). These effects are gradual, developing over several days, but claims that they are painless are unfounded: in humans both warfarin poisoning and haemophilia commonly cause moderate to severe pain from bleeding into muscles and joints. In the final phase of the intoxication, the exhausted rodent collapses in hypovolemic circulatory shock or severe anemia and dies calmly. However, because of the duration of discomfort and pain before death it has been suggested that the use of rodenticides can be considered as inhumane.

The eruption was preceded by a two-month series of earthquakes and steam-venting episodes, caused by an injection of magma at shallow depth below the volcano that created a huge bulge and a fracture system on Mount St. Helens' north slope.
USGS scientists convinced the authorities to close Mount St. Helens to the general public and to maintain the closure in spite of pressure to re-open it; their work saved thousands of lives.
An earthquake at 8:32:17 a.m. PDT (UTC-7) on Sunday, May 18, 1980, caused the entire weakened north face to slide away, suddenly exposing the partly molten, gas- and steam-rich rock in the volcano to lower pressure. The rock responded by exploding a hot mix of lava and pulverized older rock toward Spirit Lake so fast that it overtook the avalanching north face.
An eruption column rose 80,000 feet (24,400 m) into the atmosphere and deposited ash in 11 U.S. states. At the same time, snow, ice and several entire glaciers on the volcano melted, forming a series of large lahars (volcanic mudslides) that reached as far as the Columbia River, nearly fifty miles (eighty kilometers) to the southwest.
Ash column grows
As the avalanche and initial pyroclastic flow were still advancing, a huge ash column grew to a height of 12 miles (19 km) above the expanding crater in less than 10 minutes and spread tephra into the stratosphere for 10 straight hours. Near the volcano, the swirling ash particles in the atmosphere generated lightning, which in turn started many forest fires. During this time, parts of the mushroom-shaped ash-cloud column collapsed, and fell back upon the earth. This fallout, mixed with magma, mud, and steam, sent additional pyroclastic flows speeding down St. Helens' flanks. Later, slower flows came directly from the new north-facing crater and consisted of glowing pumice bombs and very hot pumiceous ash. Some of these hot flows covered ice or water which flashed to steam, creating craters up to 65 feet (20 m) in diameter and sending ash as much as 6,500 feet (1980 m) into the air.
Strong high-altitude wind carried much of this material east-northeasterly from the volcano at an average speed of about 60 mph (100 km/h). By 9:45 a.m. it had reached Yakima, Washington, 90 miles (145 km) away, and by 11:45 a.m. it was over Spokane, Washington. A total of 4 to 5 inches (100 to 130 mm) of ash fell on Yakima, and areas as far east as Spokane were plunged into darkness by noon where visibility was reduced to 10 feet (3 m) and half an inch (13 mm) of ash fell. Continuing east, St. Helens' ash fell in the western part of Yellowstone National Park by 10:15 p.m. and was seen on the ground in Denver, Colorado, the next day. In time ash fall from this eruption was reported as far away as Minnesota and Oklahoma, and some of the ash drifted around the globe within about 2 weeks.
During the nine hours of vigorous eruptive activity, about 540 million tons of ash fell over an area of more than 22,000 square miles (60,000 km²). The total volume of the ash before its compaction by rainfall was about 0.3 cubic miles (1.3 km³). The volume of the uncompacted ash is equivalent to about 0.05 mile³ (208,000,000 m³) of solid rock

On September 18, 2001—a week after the September 11 al-Qaeda terrorist attacks on the Pentagon and World Trade Center—letters containing anthrax spores were sent to Tom Brokaw at NBC news, Peter Jennings at ABC news, Dan Rather at CBS news, and to the editor of the New York Post. The letters passed through a mail-sorting facility in Hamilton, New Jersey. Two employees at the New York Post, two NBC workers, an employee at CBS, six local postal workers, and a baby who had visited ABC all became ill. The illnesses were not immediately recognized as anthrax, but the victims received medical treatment and recovered.
Two weeks later, in early October 2001, Robert Stevens—a photo editor at the Sun (a tabloid newsmagazine) in Boca Raton, Florida—died from an undiagnosed disease. Two other employees in the building also fell ill but were treated and recuperated. The illnesses were later identified as anthrax, and Bacillus anthracis spores were traced to a mail bin in the building.
Soon afterward, in mid-October, anthrax-spore-containing letters were sent to Senator Tom Daschle of South Dakota and Senator Patrick Leahy of Vermont, who work in the Senate office buildings in Washington, D.C. On October 17 anthrax spores were also found in mail bins at the House of Representatives in Washington, D.C. The Capitol Hill buildings were closed for cleaning, and hundreds of congressional workers were told to start taking the antibiotic ciprofloxacin to protect them from anthrax.
The mailed anthrax spores were examined by scientists at the U.S. Army Medical Research Institute of Infectious Disease (USAMRIID) at Fort Detrick, Maryland. The experts found that the anthrax powder in the Senate letters was "professionally done" and "energetic,"41 meaning that the spores wafted into the air to form a spreading cloud. This is a characteristic of weaponized anthrax. In addition, scientists discovered that the strain of anthrax in the letters was identical to a strain being studied at USAMRIID.
Moreover, researchers found that though the letters were tightly sealed and taped, the anthrax spores were small enough to squeeze through pores in the envelopes when the letters passed through mail-sorting machines. Government investigators believe, therefore, that the terrorist (or terrorists) had not meant to infect postal workers or the general public. Nevertheless, in October 2001 five postal workers in Washington, D.C., fell ill. Joseph P. Curseen Jr. and Thomas L. Morris Jr., who worked at the Brentwood mail-sorting facility in Washington, D.C., developed inhalation anthrax and died. The other victims in Washington, D.C., were treated and survived. The Brentwood postal facility was closed soon afterward, and two thousand postal workers were instructed to start taking antibiotics.
About two weeks later, on October 31, a New York City hospital worker named Kathy Nguyen died of inhalation anthrax. She did not work or live near a building where anthrax had been found, and no one knows how she contracted the disease. A similar incident occurred on November 30, when Ottilie Lundgren, a Connecticut resident, died of inhalation anthrax. Researchers speculated that the women may have handled mail that passed through an anthrax-contaminated postal facility.
