I have also been wondering, thinking back to that dream manipulation in 1999, whether my dreams are literal interpretations of what they are suggesting or whether my own mental mechanisms are producing something different from what they want. In other words, when I was waking up calling out my friends name, was it because that is what the dream terrorists wanted me to do? Or were they making indirect suggestions such as "you should talk more to someone you work with that you have a strong connection with." I wonder if they were trying to manipulate me to hooking up with someone I had no interest in and I was interpreting it to represent someone I was close to.
As crazy as this dream terrorism sounds, I have absolutely no doubt it has been happening.

They seemed content to perch tranquilly on the river bank, and leave him bowed down by the weight of a great problem. He wanted it settled forthwith. He could not long bear such a load, he said. Sometimes his anger at the commanders reached an acute stage, and he grumbled about the camp like a veteran.

It rained. The procession of weary soldiers became a bedraggled train, despondent and muttering, marching with churning effort in a trough of liquid brown mud under a low, wretched sky. Yet the youth smiled, for he saw that the world was a world for him, though many discovered it to be made of oaths and walking sticks. He had rid himself of the red sickness of battle. The sultry nightmare was in the past. He had been an animal blistered and sweating in the heat and pain of war. He turned now with a lover's thirst to images of tranquil skies, fresh meadows, cool brooks--an existence of soft and eternal peace.

The next morning the youth discovered that his tall comrade had been the fast-flying messenger of a mistake. There was much scoffing at the latter by those who had yesterday been firm adherents of his views, and there was even a little sneering by men who had never believed the rumor. The tall one fought with a man from Chatfield Corners and beat him severely.
The youth felt, however, that his problem was in no wise lifted from him. There was, on the contrary, an irritating prolongation. The tale had created in him a great concern for himself. Now, with the newborn question in his mind, he was compelled to sink back into his old place as part of a blue demonstration.
For days he made ceaseless calculations, but they were all wondrously unsatisfactory. He found that he could establish nothing. He finally concluded that the only way to prove himself was to go into the blaze, and then figuratively to watch his legs to discover their merits and faults. He reluctantly admitted that he could not sit still and with a mental slate and pencil derive an answer. To gain it, he must have blaze, blood, and danger, even as a chemist requires this, that, and the other. So he fretted for an opportunity.
Meanwhile, he continually tried to measure himself by his comrades. The tall soldier, for one, gave him some assurance. This man's serene unconcern dealt him a measure of confidence, for he had known him since childhood, and from his intimate knowledge he did not see how he could be capable of anything that was beyond him, the youth. Still, he thought that his comrade might be mistaken about himself. Or, on the other hand, he might be a man heretofore doomed to peace and obscurity, but, in reality, made to shine in war.
The youth would have liked to have discovered another who suspected himself. A sympathetic comparison of mental notes would have been a joy to him.
He occasionally tried to fathom a comrade with seductive sentences. He looked about to find men in the proper mood. All attempts failed to bring forth any statement which looked in any way like a confession to those doubts which he privately acknowledged in himself. He was afraid to make an open declaration of his concern, because he dreaded to place some unscrupulous confidant upon the high plane of the unconfessed from which elevation he could be derided.

That first week I was working at Microsoft beginning Monday, 12/7/1998, the group of people I worked with went to see the premiere of "Star Trek: Nemesis" during the workday, which I think was a Wednesday or it could have been a Thursday. I don't think it was Friday but I cannot recall for certain. Anyway, I had that white van from Avis that they gave me to drive until my car arrived as it was being shipped from South Carolina with the rest of my household items and I drove several people from that group at Microsoft to the theatre. I remember Ken Burns was there and Wally Simpson and Rhonda Halfmann I think, I remember Ken Burns for certain maybe Wally. I might be thinking Rhonda was there because she was with us in Texas a few weeks later and I was driving a van down there as well. So anyway I think it was Ken Burns that was commenting about the movie after it was over and we got back to the van and I was driving us back to the office and my first comment in the conversation after watching the film was that I complained about how they did not even go to "warp" speed during the movie.

After a time he began to sidle near to the youth, and in a diffident way try to make him a friend. His voice was gentle as a girl's voice and his eyes were pleading. The youth saw with surprise that the soldier had two wounds, one in the head, bound with a blood-soaked rag, and the other in the arm, making that member dangle like a broken bough.
After they had walked together for some time the tattered man mustered sufficient courage to speak. "Was pretty good fight, wa'n't it?" he timidly said. The youth, deep in thought, glanced up at the bloody and grim figure with its lamblike eyes. "What?"
"Was pretty good fight, wa'n't it?"
"Yes," said the youth shortly. He quickened his pace.
But the other hobbled industriously after him. There was an air of apology in his manner, but he evidently thought that he needed only to talk for a time, and the youth would perceive that he was a good fellow.
"Was pretty good fight, wa'n't it?" he began in a small voice, and the he achieved the fortitude to continue. "Dern me if I ever see fellers fight so. Laws, how they did fight! I knowed th' boys 'd like it when they onct got square at it. Th' boys ain't had no fair chanct up t' now, but this time they showed what they was. I knowed it 'd turn out this way. Yeh can't lick them boys. No, sir! They 're fighters, they be."
He breathed a deep breath of humble admiration. He had looked at the youth for encouragement several times. He received none, but gradually he seemed to get absorbed in his subject.
"I was talkin' 'cross pickets with a boy from Georgie, onct, an' that boy, he ses, 'Your fellers 'll all run like hell when they onct hearn a gun,' he ses. 'Mebbe they will,' I ses, 'but I don't b'lieve none of it,' I ses; 'an' b'jiminey,' I ses back t' 'um, 'mebbe your fellers 'll all run like hell when they onct hearn a gun,' I ses. He larfed. Well, they didn't run t' day, did they, hey? No, sir! They fit, an' fit, an' fit."
His homely face was suffused with a light of love for the army which was to him all things beautiful and powerful.
After a time he turned to the youth. "Where yeh hit, ol' boy?" he asked in a brotherly tone.
The youth felt instant panic at this question, although at first its full import was not borne in upon him.
"What?" he asked.
"Where yeh hit?" repeated the tattered man.

The 11th-floor New York Avenue law offices with a strategic view of Washington's majestic landmarks are a fair distance from the one-stoplight town of Lonoke, Ark. But these days there is little about Lonoke's most famous native daughter that is not known in the polished suites of Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flom.
Piece by piece, President Clinton's top-dollar legal team has taken apart the life of Paula Jones, examining topics from her job history to her possible sex partners. They turned up a check she bounced when reimbursing the Arkansas government for personal calls made on state phones. They found previous employers who fired her for tardiness or other reasons. They scoured personnel records and discovered she typed only 24 words per minute and scored 121 out of 174 on an Arkansas state clerical examination.
Venturing into more salacious territory, they interviewed as many as a half-dozen men who claimed to have had sex with her, including some who said they met her casually at parties or bars and then engaged in quick encounters, according to people close to the case. One former boss signed an affidavit alleging that she pursued him at work and that they slept together. After their short-lived relationship ended, he fired her -- in part, he said, because she dressed too provocatively.
Now that the lawyers essentially have finished gathering evidence and made the final pretrial effort to get Jones's sexual harassment lawsuit thrown out, a picture has emerged of who the president's defense team is and where it is headed. Led by veterans of past high-profile political cases, the Clinton legal squad is following an aggressive and political risky strategy centered on Jones herself. After all the attention focused on a president linked by fact or rumor to a host of women -- most recently and most perilously Monica S. Lewinsky -- Clinton's lawyers hope to turn the spotlight with blinding intensity on the life of his most persistent accuser.
"Does her story make sense? It's always been our position to point out why it doesn't make sense," said Mitchell S. Ettinger, a Clinton attorney. "No one's going to argue they weren't in a room together. And you don't have to call her a complete liar. But everything she's said -- about her injuries to her job, her reactions to this, her reasons for filing suit -- it's not going to add up."

Nearly a decade after the murder of her father, Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas Wales, Amy Wales has words for him -- and for whoever committed the crime.
For her father, she has love and a hole in her heart, and the promise that she and her brother will never give up on him.
For the assassin who shot Wales as he sat typing inside the family’s Queen Anne home – a man who has escaped justice since the October 2001 slaying despite the efforts of the FBI and Seattle Police Department – Amy Wales offered a simple declaration.
“I am not afraid of you,” Amy Wales said Wednesday, flanked by her brother Tom Wales, U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder and U.S. Attorney for Western Washington Jenny Durkan.
Wales’ children addressed the media as part of a kickoff for the most ambitious public outreach campaign to date aimed at bringing the killer to justice.
Holder was on hand in Seattle to announce the renewed effort, which will include billboard and media announcements meant to encourage anyone with information to contact the FBI at 1-800-CALL-FBI or WalesTips@ic.fbi.gov. King County Prosecutor Dan Satterberg, Seattle Police Chief John Diaz and Seattle Mayor Mike McGinn were on hand for the show of force, as were former Mayor Greg Nickels and Seattle City Councilman Tim Burgess.
Wales, a federal prosecutor of 18 years assigned to the white collar crime unit, was seated at a desk in the basement of his home on Oct. 11, 2001, when a gunman fired on him through a window. He died the following day.
“We will never give up our search for the truth,” Holder said. “This is an active case. This is an active investigation. We continue to constantly and aggressively pursue leads.”

It was a case he refused to let go of and he remained determined to find the killer. This time the task force had technology on their side.
Ridgway, originally born in Salt Lake City, Utah, on February 18, 1949, worked for a computer company at the time of his arrest. During the time of the murders, he was employed as a truck painter for 30 years at the Kentworth truck factory in Renton, Washington.

Phoebe finds a wallet with NYPD badge at Central Perk; after Chandler points out playing cop with real people is a serious crime, she decides to bring it to the police station, but pulls it a last time on her way- to the real cop, Gary. Ross buys a couch, refuses to pay almost as much for delivery just three blocks, but can't manage getting it up the staircase with Rachel; Chandler as third man just gets caught, the couch gets it even worse. Fire Sparked Push to End Vietnam War

On May 17, 1968, a quiet suburb of Baltimore became the flashpoint of the movement to end the Vietnam War.
Nine members of the Roman Catholic Church broke into a Selective Service office in Catonsville, Md., and stole hundreds of files containing the draft records of young American men about to be sent to Vietnam. Using homemade napalm, the group — which became known as the "Catonsville Nine" — set the papers on fire.
Later that year, they would be tried and convicted of destroying U.S. property, destroying Selective Service files and interfering with the Selective Service Act of 1967. But their trial made Catonsville a focal point of anti-war rebellion.
The Catonsville action was organized by the now-deceased Father Philip Berrigan, who earlier that year had joined three other people in pouring their blood on another set of draft files.

Gov. Bill Clinton of Arkansas said yesterday that he experimented with marijuana while he was a Rhodes Scholar at Oxford University in the late 1960's, but that he had never used any other illegal drug.
"I've never broken a state law," he said. "But when I was in England I experimented with marijuana a time or two, and I didn't like it. I didn't inhale it, and never tried it again."
In responding to questions at a candidates' forum on WCBS-TV in New York, Mr. Clinton violated his own rule against answering "Have you ever?" questions and spoke in more detail than he had before about his encounters with drugs.
But he said afterward that he had never before been asked the question as directly, "And I just told the truth."
"That when I was 22, I was in England, I did what most everybody else did over there," he said. "I tried it a couple of times. I literally didn't like it and never did it again." Mr. Clinton studied at Oxford from 1968 to 1970. Similar Disclosures
He said he did not expect the disclosure to hurt his Presidential campaign, because other candidates, including Senator Al Gore of Tennessee and former Gov. Bruce Babbitt of Arizona, had made similar admissions in the 1988 campaign.
"I don't think it hurt Senator Gore four years ago or Governor Babbitt, and it certainly didn't keep Clarence Thomas off the Supreme Court," he said. James Oliver Huberty will forever be remembered for one of the most shocking acts of violence in American history. Huberty, 41, was a welder in Ohio who had lost his job when the plant where he worked closed down. His volatile temper kept him from getting another job so he moved himself and his wife and kids to California where he got a job as a security guard. On July 18th, 1984 he tried to get help for his anger and called a mental health center for an appointment. When the clinic didn't call him back he began an hour-long violent encounter with his wife that ended with Huberty proclaiming "I'm going to hunt humans". He then walked a quarter of a mile from his house to the busy McDonald's restaurant where shortly before 4pm he opened fire with three semi-automatic weapons killing 21 people and injuring 19 more, the youngest six months and the oldest 74. An off-duty police officer driving by moments after the shooting noticed three boys lying in the grass, two dead and one pretending to be dead so that Huberty would not come out and kill him. Pinned inside the restaurant by police, Huberty was ordered to surrender his weapons and step outside but did nothing and was then shot in the head by a sniper stationed on the roof across the street.

Gates: Smile Would Have Helped, But He Told Truth

WASHINGTON - Bill Gates said he wished he'd smiled more during his videotaped deposition taken before the Microsoft antitrust trial started, but that he stands by all of his answers' to questions posed by government prosecutors.
Gates, speaking to reporters here via satellite today, doused speculation that Microsoft lawyers would call him a witness. He challenged the government to put him on the stand. So far, neither side has him on the witness list.
Gates attacked David Boies, the U.S. Department of Justice's lead attorney in the case.
"I answered truthfully every single question that was put forth," Gates said. "You have to understand that Mr. Boies made it clear in the negotiations leading up to the case that he is really out to destroy Microsoft. He is really out to make all the good work we've done - and make us look very bad. He's a lawyer asking questions using ambiguous terms."

As used in this chapter—
(1) the term “international terrorism” means activities that—
(A) involve violent acts or acts dangerous to human life that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or of any State, or that would be a criminal violation if committed within the jurisdiction of the United States or
of any State;
(B) appear to be intended—
(i) to intimidate or coerce a civilian population;
(ii) to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or
(iii) to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination, or kidnapping; and
(C) occur primarily outside the territorial jurisdiction of the United States, or transcend national boundaries in terms of the means by which they are accomplished, the persons they appear intended to intimidate or coerce, or the locale
in which their perpetrators operate or seek asylum;
(2) the term “national of the United States” has the meaning given such term in section 101(a)(22) of the Immigration and Nationality Act;
(3) the term “person” means any individual or entity capable of holding a legal or beneficial interest in property;
(4) the term “act of war” means any act occurring in the course of—
(A) declared war;
(B) armed conflict, whether or not war has been declared, between two or more nations; or
(C) armed conflict between military forces of any origin; and
(5) the term “domestic terrorism” means activities that—
(A) involve acts dangerous to human life that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or of any State;

She reported her boys missing on Oct. 25 and for several days claimed that a carjacker had abducted them. Her televised pleas for their safe return anguished hearts and souls across America and beyond.
For decades, parents have cautioned children to be wary of strangers bearing gifts. But how do you explain to small children that sometimes even mothers harm their own children?

Adobe chairman Chuck Geschke and family vividly recall five harrowing days that changed their lives forever
EDITOR'S NOTE: The kidnapping of Adobe Systems co-founder and prominent Los Altos resident Charles "Chuck" Geschke sent shock waves through this quiet bedroom community back in May 1992. Until now, the Geschkes have kept quiet about the ordeal. In an attempt for them - and us - to bring closure to this dark time in their lives, former Town Crier editor Anne Chappell Belden offers an exhaustive overview of the five-day ordeal, what has transpired since and the ramifications on the Geschke family. The following is the first installment of a four-part series.
Day One
It began on an apparently normal workday, Tuesday, May 26, 1992. Dressed in slacks and a white Polo golf shirt, Chuck Geschke left for work a little later than usual, after wrestling with a broken garden hose. On his way out the door, Nan reminded him to call her as soon as he arrived at work because she needed his June schedule to make travel plans. Chuck entered the Adobe Systems parking lot in Mountain View around 8:55 a.m. and pulled his green Mercedes 500SL into his usual spot. As he removed his briefcase from the trunk, a light gray Ford Taurus pulled up and a slender, black-haired young man jumped out from the back seat with a map in his hand. It's typical for people to get lost around Charleston Road, a cluster of two-story research and development buildings.
"Do you work here?" the man asked.
"Yes, can I help you?" Chuck asked and instinctively moved toward him. The man pulled his map aside and revealed a gun. "You're coming with me," the man said. By then Chuck was within arms reach so he did not protest when the man grabbed his arm and directed him into the car. He would later replay this moment dozens of times, questioning his decision to obey.
With the gun jammed against Chuck's ribs, the man said, "You're being kidnapped. I want you to keep your eyes down." He took two duct tape cut-outs and placed them over Chuck's eyes. He covered those with a pair of sunglasses, so no one could see from outside that Chuck was blindfolded. As the car pulled away, his abductor told Chuck, "If you attempt to do anything, like get away from us, we'll kill you. We know where your family is. We'll kill them, too."
This man, Mouhammad Albukhari, Chuck would know as "Steve." The driver, Ahmad "Jack" Sayeh, Chuck would address as "Rock." Chuck prefers to talk about them using their aliases.
As they were driving, Rock complimented Chuck's car and asked how much he paid for it. He answered $90,000.
"You're lying," Rock charged. "You paid $125,000 for it. We're going to blow up your f------ house."
Steve explained that they had a remote control device that could detonate a bomb great enough to blow up not only the Geschkes' house but all the neighbors' homes as well. He said that a relative who was a munitions expert had planted the bomb. "Well that obviously got my attention," Chuck said. "I figured there was no point in messing around."
His two captors also told him they were part of a much larger Middle Eastern organization. Once they collected ransom on Chuck, they planned to turn him over to the organization, which would take him to Lebanon and demand even more money.

Sally swam up out of sleep.
First she glanced at the clock on the night table and saw it was quarter past two in the morning. Charlie shouldn’t even be here; he should be on shift. Then she got her first good look at him and something leaped up inside her, some deadly intuition.
Her husband was deathly pale. His eyes started and bulged from their sockets. The car keys were in one hand. He was still using the other to shake her, although her eyes were open. It was as if he hadn’t been able to register the fact that she was awake.
“Charlie, what is it? What’s wrong?”
He didn’t seem to know what to say. His Adam’s apple bobbed futilely but there was no sound in the small service bungalow but the ticking of the clock.
“Is it a fire?” she asked stupidly. It was the only thing she could think of which might have put him in such a state. She knew his parents had perished in a housefire.
“In a way,” he said. “In a way it’s worse. You got to get dressed, honey. Get Baby LaVon. We got to get out of here.”
“Why?” she asked, getting out of bed. Dark fear had seized her. Nothing seemed right. This was like a dream. “Where? You mean the back yard?” But she knew it wasn’t the back yard. She had never seen Charlie look afraid like this. She drew a deep breath and could smell no smoke or burning.
“Sally, honey, don’t ask questions. We have to get away. Far away. You lust go get Baby LaVon and get her dressed.”
“But should I… is there time to pack?”
This seemed to stop him. To derail him somehow. She thought she was as afraid as she could be, but apparently she wasn’t. She recognized that what she had taken for fright on his part was closer to raw panic. He ran a distracted hand through his hair and replied, “I don’t know. I’ll have to test the wind.”
And he left her with this bizarre statement which meant nothing to her, left her standing cold and afraid and disoriented in her bare feet and babydoll nightie. It was as if he had gone mad. What did testing the wind have to do with whether or not she had time to pack? And where was far away? Reno? Vegas? Salt Lake City? And…
She put her hand against her throat as a new idea struck her.
AWOL. Leaving in the middle of the night meant Charlie was planning to go AWOL.
She went into the small room which served as Baby LaVon’s nursery and stood for a moment, indecisive, looking at the sleeping infant in her pink blanket suit. She held to the faint hope that this might be no more than an extraordinarily vivid dream. It would pass, she would wake up at seven in the morning just like usual, feed Baby LaVon and herself while she watched the first hour of the “Today” show, and be cooking Charlie’s eggs when he came off-shift at 8 A.M., his nightly tour in the Reservation’s north tower over for another night. And in two weeks he would be back on days and not so cranky and if he was sleeping with her at night she wouldn’t have crazy dreams like this one and—

The Confession
On Thursday, November 3, 1994, the ninth day since the carjacking and disappearance of the Michael and Alex Smith, their parents, Susan and David rose early to prepare themselves for interviews on three television network morning programs. Susan and David sat together holding hands on the Russells' living room sofa during their interviews. On CBS This Morning, Susan was asked if she had any involvement in her son's disappearance. Susan answered the question by saying, "I did not have anything to do with the abduction of my children." Susan added that, "Whoever did this is a sick and emotionally unstable person." Although David and Susan were legally separated, when David was asked whether he believed his wife, he replied, "Yes, I believe my wife totally."
After the interviews, Susan and David had been scheduled to sit for an interview with the Union Daily Times, but Margaret Gregory called and cancelled the interview explaining that the couple were exhausted and had enough media attention for the day.
At 12:30 p.m., Susan told her mother that she and David were going to run errands. Susan did not tell her mother that Sheriff Wells had sent for her. Susan was taken to another safe house for another interrogation.
Susan was dressed in jeans and a hooded sweatshirt and brought to her latest interrogation a newly revised statement that said the same things as her previous statement, the only change being that the name "Monarch Mills" had been changed to "Carlisle". Agent Logan asked Susan if she had anything else to add to her statement and she said no. At that point, Sheriff Wells was summoned to speak with Susan.
Susan was beginning to be worn down by the intensive and lengthy interrogations. Susan had also been facing increasingly skeptical news reporters who had started to pressure her for an explanation of Sheriff Wells' statement regarding the unspecified inconsistencies in her story.
At 1:40 p.m., Sheriff Wells and Susan met in a small room in the Family Center of the First Baptist Church, located on the same street as the Union County Courthouse. Sheriff Wells and Susan sat on folding chairs, knee to knee, facing one another and talked.
Sheriff Wells confronted Susan about her story of the carjacking. Wells told Susan that he knew that Susan's story of the black carjacker was a lie. He told her that she could not stop at the red light at the Monarch intersection if there were no other cars on the road. Wells told Susan that she had revised her statement because of this inconsistency and that even her back up story was a lie.

United Airlines Flight 232 was a scheduled flight from Stapleton International Airport in Denver, Colorado, to O'Hare International Airport in Chicago, with continuing service to Philadelphia International Airport. On July 19, 1989, the DC-10 (Registration N1819U) operating the route crash-landed in Sioux City, Iowa, after suffering catastrophic failure of its tail-mounted engine, which led to the loss of all flight controls. 111 people died in the accident
The crew guided the crippled jet to Sioux Gateway Airport and lined it up for landing on one of the runways. However, without flight controls, they were unable to slow down for landing, and were forced to attempt landing at much too high a speed and rate of descent. On touchdown, the aircraft broke apart, caught fire, and rolled over. The largest section came to rest in a cornfield next to the runway.
On final descent, the aircraft was going 240 knots and sinking at 1,850 feet per minute, while a safe landing would require 140 knots and 300 feet per minute. Fitch needed a seat for landing; Dvorak offered up his own, as it could be moved to a position behind the throttles. Dvorak sat in the cockpit's jumpseat for landing. Unfortunately, right before touchdown, the aircraft began a downward phugoid and veered right. The flight crew had no time to react. The tip of the right wing hit the runway first, spilling fuel, which ignited immediately. The tail section broke off from the force of the impact, and the rest of the aircraft bounced several times, shedding the landing gear and engine nacelles and breaking the fuselage into several main pieces. On the final impact the right wing was sheared off and the main part of the aircraft skidded sideways, rolled over on to its back, and slid to a stop upside-down in a corn field to the right of Runway 22. Witnesses reported that the aircraft cartwheeled, but the investigation did not confirm this. News reports that the aircraft cartwheeled were due to misinterpretation of the video of the crash that showed the flaming right wing tumbling end-over-end and the intact left wing, still attached to the fuselage, rolling up and over as the fuselage flipped over.
Of the 296 people on board, 111 died in the crash. Most were killed by injuries sustained in the multiple impacts, but 35 people in the middle fuselage section directly above the fuel tanks died from smoke inhalation in the post-crash fire. Of those, 24 had no traumatic blunt-force injuries. The majority of the 185 survivors were seated behind first class and ahead of the wings. Many passengers were able to walk out through the ruptures to the structure, and in many cases got lost in the high field of corn adjacent to the runway until rescue workers arrived on the scene and escorted them to safety.

Susan V. Smith, 23, confessed last week to killing her sons, Michael, 3, and Alexander, 14 months, by plunging her car, with the boys still buckled in their safety seats, into a lake.
She reported her boys missing on Oct. 25 and for several days claimed that a carjacker had abducted them. Her televised pleas for their safe return anguished hearts and souls across America and beyond.
For decades, parents have cautioned children to be wary of strangers bearing gifts. But how do you explain to small children that sometimes even mothers harm their own children?

Joe Turner (Robert Redford) is an employee of the CIA. He's not a secret agent, his job is to read, and he and his co-workers at the American Literary Historical Society read everything; books, comics, magazines, and they scan everything into a database to be cross-checked against real CIA operations. On a rainy December morning it's business as usual, so no one notices the non-descript man sitting in plain sedan across the street from Joe's building, checking off names of every employee as they enter.
Inside, Joe looks for an answer to a letter he'd sent to the main CIA office at Langley. He has a theory about connections he's noticed between operations in Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, and other locations around the world, but so far there's no response. Noon approaches, and it's his turn to go out for lunch. Since it's still raining, he ducks out the basement door (which is against regulations) and cuts through several back alleys to the deli. Meanwhile, the sedan out front quietly pulls away after signaling to 3 men waiting in the street. They move in with quiet determination and knock on the front door.
At the deli around the block, Joe picks up lunch for the others and then runs back. Since the rain has stopped, he goes to the front door, and buzzes the security intercom to be let in, but gets no answer. Pushing on the door, he finds it is unlocked, which it never is. Inside he finds a scene of carnage. Everyone has been murdered, shot to death in the few minutes he has been gone. Fighting down his shock and horror, he grabs a pistol from the receptionist's desk and flees.
Suddenly, everyone on the street looks suspicious, and Joe realizes that whoever killed his coworkers is probably still looking for him. He finds a payphone and calls an emergency contact number at the CIA. "This is...uh...'Condor'" Joe says, fighting through the shock to remember his code name. "The section's been hit. Everyone's dead." Told not to panic, and to call back in two hours, a CIA response team quickly arrives and verifies Joe's story. Higgens (Cliff Robertson), the section chief in New York, wonders why in the world someone would take out a research office like this, and calls his supervisor at CIA headquarters.

SAN FRANCISCO - A veteran FBI agent sued the agency Friday, contending it irrationally bans homosexuals from employment and plans to fire him because he disclosed in 1988 that he is a homosexual.
The agent is identified as John Doe in the U.S. District Court lawsuit - not because he is embarrassed by his openly declared sexual orientation, but because he has done sensitive counterintelligence work for the FBI and wants to resume if he wins the lawsuit, his attorney said.
"The FBI has a policy and practice of denying security clearances and employment to gay persons only because of their sexual orientation, association with other gay people, and speculation about their sexual conduct," the suit said.
It said the policy was based on sexual orientation, not conduct, and that no such policy covered heterosexual conduct such as extramarital affairs.
The policy is irrational as applied to Doe, who has an excellent work record, has received several special commendations and isn't susceptible to blackmail, the lawsuit said. Doe is based in San Diego.
In Washington, FBI spokesman Carlos Fernandez denied that such a policy exists.
"Our concern is with sexual conduct, not preference," he said. "You may have even heterosexual conduct with which we may be concerned if it affects the job.' Stressing that he was not discussing any specific case, Fernandez said the FBI's policy is that "homosexual conduct is considered a significant factor" in employee hiring and retention "on a case-by-case basis.' He declined to say whether homosexual conduct is a bar to FBI employment or how it is evaluated.
But Doe's attorney, Richard Gayer, said the FBI's absolute ban on homosexual employees was declared publicly in response to a 1979 lawsuit that challenged the policy.
Gayer said the FBI policy has been upheld in two other appellate circuits.
"The issue in this case is whether they can simply ignore 20 years of good service," Gayer said.
Doe "does not care who knows he is gay" but never told the FBI until an investigation that started in December 1988, the lawsuit said.

SAN DIEGO - The FBI summarily dismissed an agent who had sued the agency for attempting to fire him because of his homosexuality, the agent's attorney said.
Two FBI officials came to agent Frank Buttino's home Wednesday morning and read a brief termination order from FBI headquarters, said Buttino's attorney, Richard Gayer.
"He was shocked, very upset," Gayer said Thursday from San Francisco. "He didn't think they would be gross enough to fire him before the hearing.' FBI spokesman Gene Reihl in San Diego declined comment and referred calls to spokesman Charles Steinmetz in Washington, D.C., who was unavailable Friday.
The FBI placed Buttino on administrative leave in September after a 20-year career. His security clearance was revoked May 29 without explanation.
On June 8, Buttino filed a suit in U.S. District Court in San Francisco seeking to stop the government from firing him.
The 45-year-old Buttino has handled counterespionage, terrorism investigations and other sensitive cases, Gayer said.
Gayer said the firing order "makes the FBI look cruel and callous. It's obvious from their approach that they intend to fight tooth and nail on this. Now we have something really tangible to fight.' Buttino's lawsuit alleges that the FBI regularly discriminates against gays, Gayer said.
The agent's San Diego supervisors and colleagues, with whom he has worked for 17 years, continue to trust and respect him, Gayer said.
"What Washington is saying is, `We don't trust you because you're gay,"' Gayer said. "It's significant that everyone he worked with supports him. But there are two or three people in Washington who have never met him or spoken to him, and they are the ones with the power to revoke his security clearance.'
