Susan answered the question by saying, "I did not have anything to do with the abduction of my children." Susan added that, "Whoever did this is a sick and emotionally unstable person." Although David and Susan were legally separated, when David was asked whether he believed his wife, he replied, "Yes, I believe my wife totally."
After the interviews, Susan and David had been scheduled to sit for an interview with the Union Daily Times, but Margaret Gregory called and cancelled the interview explaining that the couple were exhausted and had enough media attention for the day.
At 12:30 p.m., Susan told her mother that she and David were going to run errands. Susan did not tell her mother that Sheriff Wells had sent for her. Susan was taken to another safe house for another interrogation.
Susan was dressed in jeans and a hooded sweatshirt and brought to her latest interrogation a newly revised statement that said the same things as her previous statement, the only change being that the name "Monarch Mills" had been changed to "Carlisle". Agent Logan asked Susan if she had anything else to add to her statement and she said no. At that point, Sheriff Wells was summoned to speak with Susan.
Susan was beginning to be worn down by the intensive and lengthy interrogations. Susan had also been facing increasingly skeptical news reporters who had started to pressure her for an explanation of Sheriff Wells' statement regarding the unspecified inconsistencies in her story.
At 1:40 p.m., Sheriff Wells and Susan met in a small room in the Family Center of the First Baptist Church, located on the same street as the Union County Courthouse. Sheriff Wells and Susan sat on folding chairs, knee to knee, facing one another and talked.
Sheriff Wells confronted Susan about her story of the carjacking. Wells told Susan that he knew that Susan's story of the black carjacker was a lie. He told her that she could not stop at the red light at the Monarch intersection if there were no other cars on the road. Wells told Susan that she had revised her statement because of this inconsistency and that even her back up story was a lie.

United Airlines Flight 232 was a scheduled flight from Stapleton International Airport in Denver, Colorado, to O'Hare International Airport in Chicago, with continuing service to Philadelphia International Airport. On July 19, 1989, the DC-10 (Registration N1819U) operating the route crash-landed in Sioux City, Iowa, after suffering catastrophic failure of its tail-mounted engine, which led to the loss of all flight controls. 111 people died in the accident
The crew guided the crippled jet to Sioux Gateway Airport and lined it up for landing on one of the runways. However, without flight controls, they were unable to slow down for landing, and were forced to attempt landing at much too high a speed and rate of descent. On touchdown, the aircraft broke apart, caught fire, and rolled over. The largest section came to rest in a cornfield next to the runway.
On final descent, the aircraft was going 240 knots and sinking at 1,850 feet per minute, while a safe landing would require 140 knots and 300 feet per minute. Fitch needed a seat for landing; Dvorak offered up his own, as it could be moved to a position behind the throttles. Dvorak sat in the cockpit's jumpseat for landing. Unfortunately, right before touchdown, the aircraft began a downward phugoid and veered right. The flight crew had no time to react. The tip of the right wing hit the runway first, spilling fuel, which ignited immediately. The tail section broke off from the force of the impact, and the rest of the aircraft bounced several times, shedding the landing gear and engine nacelles and breaking the fuselage into several main pieces. On the final impact the right wing was sheared off and the main part of the aircraft skidded sideways, rolled over on to its back, and slid to a stop upside-down in a corn field to the right of Runway 22. Witnesses reported that the aircraft cartwheeled, but the investigation did not confirm this. News reports that the aircraft cartwheeled were due to misinterpretation of the video of the crash that showed the flaming right wing tumbling end-over-end and the intact left wing, still attached to the fuselage, rolling up and over as the fuselage flipped over.
Of the 296 people on board, 111 died in the crash. Most were killed by injuries sustained in the multiple impacts, but 35 people in the middle fuselage section directly above the fuel tanks died from smoke inhalation in the post-crash fire. Of those, 24 had no traumatic blunt-force injuries. The majority of the 185 survivors were seated behind first class and ahead of the wings. Many passengers were able to walk out through the ruptures to the structure, and in many cases got lost in the high field of corn adjacent to the runway until rescue workers arrived on the scene and escorted them to safety.

Susan V. Smith, 23, confessed last week to killing her sons, Michael, 3, and Alexander, 14 months, by plunging her car, with the boys still buckled in their safety seats, into a lake.
She reported her boys missing on Oct. 25 and for several days claimed that a carjacker had abducted them. Her televised pleas for their safe return anguished hearts and souls across America and beyond.
For decades, parents have cautioned children to be wary of strangers bearing gifts. But how do you explain to small children that sometimes even mothers harm their own children?

Joe Turner (Robert Redford) is an employee of the CIA. He's not a secret agent, his job is to read, and he and his co-workers at the American Literary Historical Society read everything; books, comics, magazines, and they scan everything into a database to be cross-checked against real CIA operations. On a rainy December morning it's business as usual, so no one notices the non-descript man sitting in plain sedan across the street from Joe's building, checking off names of every employee as they enter.
Inside, Joe looks for an answer to a letter he'd sent to the main CIA office at Langley. He has a theory about connections he's noticed between operations in Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, and other locations around the world, but so far there's no response. Noon approaches, and it's his turn to go out for lunch. Since it's still raining, he ducks out the basement door (which is against regulations) and cuts through several back alleys to the deli. Meanwhile, the sedan out front quietly pulls away after signaling to 3 men waiting in the street. They move in with quiet determination and knock on the front door.
At the deli around the block, Joe picks up lunch for the others and then runs back. Since the rain has stopped, he goes to the front door, and buzzes the security intercom to be let in, but gets no answer. Pushing on the door, he finds it is unlocked, which it never is. Inside he finds a scene of carnage. Everyone has been murdered, shot to death in the few minutes he has been gone. Fighting down his shock and horror, he grabs a pistol from the receptionist's desk and flees.
Suddenly, everyone on the street looks suspicious, and Joe realizes that whoever killed his coworkers is probably still looking for him. He finds a payphone and calls an emergency contact number at the CIA. "This is...uh...'Condor'" Joe says, fighting through the shock to remember his code name. "The section's been hit. Everyone's dead." Told not to panic, and to call back in two hours, a CIA response team quickly arrives and verifies Joe's story. Higgens (Cliff Robertson), the section chief in New York, wonders why in the world someone would take out a research office like this, and calls his supervisor at CIA headquarters.

Motive in itself is seldom an element of any given crime; however, the legal system typically allows motive to be proven in order to make plausible the accused's reasons for committing a crime, at least when those motives may be obscure or hard to identify with.

Hoodlum Tommy Shay is sentenced to die for the murder of Police Lieutenant Carson, although Tommy was in a poker game at the time with a man calling himself "Denver" Collins. Collins has disappeared, and perjured evidence leads to Tommy's conviction. Tommy's younger brother Danny and his gang of alley kids,"The Little Tough Guys"--- "Sailor", "Murphy", "Monk", "Trouble" and "Yap"---scheme to save Tommy from the electric chair. Police Lieutenant John Lewis, who arrested Tommy, believes he is innocent and goes to the District Attorney and tries so insistently to have the case reopened that he is demoted to a patrolman in the sticks. SAN FRANCISCO - A veteran FBI agent sued the agency Friday, contending it irrationally bans homosexuals from employment and plans to fire him because he disclosed in 1988 that he is a homosexual.
The agent is identified as John Doe in the U.S. District Court lawsuit - not because he is embarrassed by his openly declared sexual orientation, but because he has done sensitive counterintelligence work for the FBI and wants to resume if he wins the lawsuit, his attorney said.
"The FBI has a policy and practice of denying security clearances and employment to gay persons only because of their sexual orientation, association with other gay people, and speculation about their sexual conduct," the suit said.
It said the policy was based on sexual orientation, not conduct, and that no such policy covered heterosexual conduct such as extramarital affairs.
The policy is irrational as applied to Doe, who has an excellent work record, has received several special commendations and isn't susceptible to blackmail, the lawsuit said. Doe is based in San Diego.
In Washington, FBI spokesman Carlos Fernandez denied that such a policy exists.
"Our concern is with sexual conduct, not preference," he said. "You may have even heterosexual conduct with which we may be concerned if it affects the job.' Stressing that he was not discussing any specific case, Fernandez said the FBI's policy is that "homosexual conduct is considered a significant factor" in employee hiring and retention "on a case-by-case basis.' He declined to say whether homosexual conduct is a bar to FBI employment or how it is evaluated.
But Doe's attorney, Richard Gayer, said the FBI's absolute ban on homosexual employees was declared publicly in response to a 1979 lawsuit that challenged the policy.
Gayer said the FBI policy has been upheld in two other appellate circuits.
"The issue in this case is whether they can simply ignore 20 years of good service," Gayer said.
Doe "does not care who knows he is gay" but never told the FBI until an investigation that started in December 1988, the lawsuit said.

SAN DIEGO - The FBI summarily dismissed an agent who had sued the agency for attempting to fire him because of his homosexuality, the agent's attorney said.
Two FBI officials came to agent Frank Buttino's home Wednesday morning and read a brief termination order from FBI headquarters, said Buttino's attorney, Richard Gayer.
"He was shocked, very upset," Gayer said Thursday from San Francisco. "He didn't think they would be gross enough to fire him before the hearing.' FBI spokesman Gene Reihl in San Diego declined comment and referred calls to spokesman Charles Steinmetz in Washington, D.C., who was unavailable Friday.
The FBI placed Buttino on administrative leave in September after a 20-year career. His security clearance was revoked May 29 without explanation.
On June 8, Buttino filed a suit in U.S. District Court in San Francisco seeking to stop the government from firing him.
The 45-year-old Buttino has handled counterespionage, terrorism investigations and other sensitive cases, Gayer said.
Gayer said the firing order "makes the FBI look cruel and callous. It's obvious from their approach that they intend to fight tooth and nail on this. Now we have something really tangible to fight.' Buttino's lawsuit alleges that the FBI regularly discriminates against gays, Gayer said.
The agent's San Diego supervisors and colleagues, with whom he has worked for 17 years, continue to trust and respect him, Gayer said.
"What Washington is saying is, `We don't trust you because you're gay,"' Gayer said. "It's significant that everyone he worked with supports him. But there are two or three people in Washington who have never met him or spoken to him, and they are the ones with the power to revoke his security clearance.'
