There was that dream I had the other night, where I was inside a missile. I remembered today the similarity with this movie, in that Cochrane converted an ICBM into his warp ship. But why would someone create a connection between me and Cochrane? I didn't create warp drive in the past only to have someone block my memory of that, did I? It's funny, when I read something the other day about Data arguing with Einstein, it reminded me of something I was writing in my journal back in the early '90s. I was wondering why it was impossible to travel faster than the speed of light. A couple years ago I was writing about it again. The idea presented itself to me about why it was impossible, something about atoms not being able to work because electrons could not transfer energy faster than the speed of light. I wondered if it was possible to create some kind of process to transfer energy to those atoms, not unlike a cell's mitochondria works. Today I have been wondering if anything I remember about the past is real.

I imagine that memories consist of chains of neurons that are scattered through out the brain. The memories are formed from the neurons stored in certain parts of the brain and those specialty neurons create associations that form the memories. I imagine that the neuron’s that process sensory input and recognize that input as something we smell or hear, all combine to produce a memory of a specific event. I further imagine those chains weave throughout the brain with the connections of the axion and the dendrites of each neuron and some of the chain spans into the outer edge of the brain. If the outer layer of my brain was damaged, then the chain is broken. But some where in my mind, there is a process that recognizes that information is missing because of the fragments of those memories. When I sleep, there is some process that is trying to reestablish those connections of neurons and recover the full memory.
Why do I always remember that the speed of light is 186, 282 miles per second? Why do I have such a precise memory of that detail? Most times when you read about the speed of light, it is rounded off to 186, 000 mps. Why do I need such precision? And I still remember that pi is 3.1415926536 without looking it up. Why do I remember that?

WASHINGTON -- House speaker-to-be Newt Gingrich, who is co-writing a World War II novel that contains a steamy scene involving a "pouting sex kitten" and the White House chief of staff, said Thursday that he has told his publisher to strike a draft chapter that refers to a Lt. George Bush as "goofy."
Gingrich, R-Ga., said in a statement that he "neither wrote, saw nor approved" the reference to the former president, who served as a Navy lieutenant during World War II. The book's publisher, James Baen, said Thursday that the section mentioning Bush was a suggested insertion that he had added to the novel's draft version but that Gingrich had not had a chance to review it. The book is due out next August.
The book, one of two novels Gingrich is working on, is the latest in a series of enterprises, including a weekly television program on a conservative network, that he has used to build a national reputation and promote his ideas. The House ethics committee this week has been examining whether to conduct an ethics probe into Gingrich's financing of a college course he teaches.
As excerpts of the World War II novel, tentatively titled 1945, began circulating Thursday, Gingrich once again found himself facing controversy over a personal enterprise.
Thursday, his publisher, who is paying Gingrich a $15,000 advance for the book, took the blame for the unflattering Bush reference.
"The fault lies entirely with me, and I deeply regret both the obvious furor as well as any distress it has caused," said Baen, who heads Baen Publishing Enterprises in New York. "In this regard, I offer my special apologies to George Bush, a man I personally admire."

§ 3005. Counsel and witnesses in capital cases
Whoever is indicted for treason or other capital crime shall be allowed to make his full defense by counsel; and the court before which the defendant is to be tried, or a judge thereof, shall promptly, upon the defendant’s request, assign 2 such counsel, of whom at least 1 shall be learned in the law applicable to capital cases, and who shall have free access to the accused at all reasonable hours. In assigning counsel under this section, the court shall consider the recommendation of the Federal Public Defender organization, or, if no such organization exists in the district, of the Administrative Office of the United States Courts. The defendant shall be allowed, in his defense to make any proof that he can produce by lawful witnesses, and shall have the like process of the court to compel his witnesses to appear at his trial, as is usually granted to compel witnesses to appear on behalf of the prosecution.

Newton Leroy "Newt" Gingrich (born Newton Leroy McPherson; June 17, 1943) is an American politician who served as the 58th Speaker of the United States House of Representatives from 1995 to 1999. He represented Georgia's 6th congressional district as a Republican member from 1979 to 1999.
Gingrich was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, but raised in Hummelstown, a small nearby borough. A college professor, historian, and author, Gingrich twice ran unsuccessfully for the House before winning a seat in the election of November 1978. He was re-elected ten times, and his activism as a member of the House's Republican minority eventually enabled him to succeed Dick Cheney as House Minority Whip in 1989.
As a co-author of the 1994 Contract with America, Gingrich was in the forefront of the Republican Party's dramatic success in that year's Congressional elections and subsequently was elected Speaker of the House. In 1995, Time magazine named him "Man of the Year" for his role in leading the Republican Revolution in the House, ending 40 years of the Democratic Party being in the majority. During his tenure as Speaker, he represented the public face of the Republican opposition to President Bill Clinton.
Pre-speakership congressional activities
In May 1988, Gingrich (along with 77 other House members and Common Cause) brought ethics charges against Democratic Speaker Jim Wright, who was alleged to have used a book deal to circumvent campaign-finance laws and House ethics rules. During the investigation, it was noted Gingrich had his own unusual book deal, for Window of Opportunity, part of whose publicity expenses were covered by a limited partnership, which raised $105,000 from Republican political supporters around the country to promote sales of the book. Wright eventually resigned as a result of the inquiry. Gingrich's success in forcing the resignation was in part responsible for his rising influence in the Republican caucus.
In March 1989, after House Minority Whip Dick Cheney was appointed Secretary of Defense, Gingrich was elected to succeed him. He faced the chief deputy whip, Edward Rell Madigan, in the election and won by 87 to 85. This was Gingrich's first formal position of power within the Republican party and following the election he stated his intention to "build a much more aggressive, activist party." Early in his role as Whip, in May 1989 Gingrich was involved in talks about the appointment of a Panamanian administrator of the Panama Canal, which was scheduled to occur in 1989 subject to United States government approval of the candidate. Gingrich was outspoken in his opposition to giving control over the canal to an administrator appointed by the dictatorship in Panama. Gingrich and others in the house, including the newly minted Gang of Seven, railed against what they saw as ethical lapses in the House, an institution that had been under Democratic control for almost 40 years. The House banking scandal and Congressional Post Office scandal were emblems of the exposed corruption. Gingrich himself was among the 450 members of the House who had engaged in check kiting; he had overdrafts on twenty-two checks, including a $9,463 check to the Internal Revenue Service in 1990.
