"Rio"

In my artificial and symbolic memory, my youngest niece, Caitlin (KATE-lynn) was born on August 24th, but I can't "remember" the year. It might have been 1989, or maybe 1990. Probably 1989. I think I was still in the Navy, in my symbolic memory. Her older sister, Kayli (KAY-lee) was born sometime around Memorial Day, I think, in 1985.

USS Mahan (DDG 42)

Commissioned: August 25, 1960

Today is the day I remember as Caitlin's birthday. I wonder what that means. I seem to recall that I wrote about a possible connection with her birthday, rather this date, but I can't remember what it was.

One of the guys I was in class with in Dam Neck for the Terrier computers went to this ship as I went to the Wainwright, both were stationed in Charleston.

It wasn't until I wrote again about how Doug Weise in my artificial and symbolic memories, was assigned to the USS Richmond K. Turner when I went on to the USS Wainwright. Doug Weise's fiancee resembles Phoebe in my artificial and symbolic memory. I can "remember" her standing on the beach in a yellow bikini and wishing I had a girlfriend that was so pretty.

USS Richmond K. Turner (DLG-20 / CG-20) was a Leahy class destroyer leader in the United States Navy. The ship was named for Admiral Richmond K. Turner, who served during World War II.

Commissioned: 13 June 1964

Motto: "America's Battle Cruiser"

I can't "remember," from my artificial and symbolic memories, the ship Doug Weise had been assigned to before we started Fire Controlman school, but I always want to say it was the USS New Jersey BB-62. I find it curious that the USS New Jersey BB-62 was re-commissioned on 12/28/1982. That was 3 days, 34 weeks, after 5/1/1982. I would expect that date to align with 4/30/1982, because that is the date I recognize as when I graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy. There might be a reason I don't remember yet. But I don't think it is a coinicidence that the New Jersey was the first of those battleships to be brought into active duty and because I recognize that I got my first college degree from Princeton University in New Jersey. It makes sense that this ship was re-commissioned to time with my graduation from another college.

Kevin Kline's birthday is 33 weeks, 4 days, after mine. His initials, K.K., also reminds me of that movie, "Karate Kid."

This is the ship that my half-brother, Kevin Wayne Burgess, from my symbolic and artificial memory, was stationed aboard. He was a U.S. Navy nuclear-qualified Machinists Mate. I couldn't "remember" the name of the ship but I always "remembered" the unique superstructure. I wrote about this detail in my journal a few years ago.

USS Long Beach (CGN 9)

USS LONG BEACH, the third ship in the Navy to bear the name, was the first nuclear powered surface warship in the world and the first large combatant in the US Navy with its main battery consisting of guided missiles. She was also the first American cruiser since the end of World War II to built entirely new from the keel up, and, when completed, boasted the highest bridge in the world. She was also the last warship to be fitted with teakwood decks.

Commissioned: September 9, 1961
Decommissioned: May 1, 1995

I "remember" that my instructor at Dam Neck had been stationed on the USS Worden CG-18 before his assignment to the MK 152 Guided Missile Fire Control Computer Complex Class "C" school in 1986. One of the guys in my class went to a ship in Pearl Harbor, but I don't remember which one it was. It might have been the Worden. I wrote about that scene a long time ago. The instructor wrote the assignments on the chalkboard. I had first choice of ships and I took the Wainwright because my girlfriend was still there and I wanted to get back to her. I wrote a long time ago, too, that I was going to move to New York when I finished this bullshit assignment. I'm doing it for her, though, so that makes it more tolerable.

Ever since the founding of the Naval Academy in 1845, when the “Band”consisted of a fifer and a drummer, music has been an important part of Naval Academy life. Officially formed in November 1852, the United States Naval Academy Band has established a reputation for outstanding musical support to the Brigade of Midshipmen and the surrounding community. However, the current version of the Naval Academy Band is a far cry from the thirteen men who reported to Annapolis over 150 years ago. Today, due to the unmatched versatility of its members, the band is able to blend tradition and change into a wide variety of musical styles.
The United States Naval Academy Marching Band may head up a column of Midshipman on parade before dignitaries on Worden Field, advance into Navy/Marine Corps Stadium for a contest on the grid iron, escort a fallen shipmate to his final resting place, or represent the Navy and Naval Academy on “Main Street, USA” in their Memorial Day celebration.

The day 6/7/1976 is the date I recognize as when I arrived at the Saturn moon Phoebe. The single track “Rio” from Duran Duran released 334 weeks after 6/7/1976. At that time in 1982, I would have been out in the U.S. Navy fleet flying the F-14 Tomcat, where the person in the backseat of that aircraft was called the R.I.O., or Radar Intercept Officer. There is probably some kind of inside joke between us that she was my RIO when I was home. Something like that. Something about how I thought of her.

DURAN DURAN LYRICS

"Rio"

Moving on the floor now babe you're a bird of paradise
Cherry ice cream smile I suppose it's very nice
With a step to your left and a flick to the right you catch that mirror way out west
You know you're something special and you look like you're the best

Her name is Rio and she dances on the sand
Just like that river twisting through a dusty land
And when she shines she really shows you all she can
Oh Rio, Rio dance across the Rio Grande

I've seen you on the beach and I've seen you on TV
Two of a billion stars it means so much to me
Like a birthday or a pretty view
But then I'm sure that you know it's just for you

Her name is Rio and she dances on the sand
Just like that river twisting through a dusty land
And when she shines she really shows you all she can
Oh Rio, Rio dance across the Rio Grande

Hey now woo look at that did she nearly run you down
At the end of the drive the lawmen arrive
You make me feel alive, alive alive
I'll take my chance cause luck is on my side or something
I know what you're thinking I tell you something I know what you're thinking

Her name is Rio and she dances on the sand
Just like that river twists across a dusty land
And when she shines she really shows you all she can
Oh Rio, Rio dance across the Rio Grand
Her name is Rio she don't need to understand
And I might find her if I'm looking like I can
Oh Rio, Rio hear them shout across the land
From mountains in the north down to the Rio Grande
