Germans bomb Paris
On this day in 1940, the German air force bombs Paris, killing 254 people, most of them civilians.
Determined to wreck France's economy and military, reduce its population, and in short, cripple its morale as well as its ability to rally support for other occupied nations, the Germans bombed the French capital without regard to the fact that most of the victims were civilians, including schoolchildren. The bombing succeeded in provoking just the right amount of terror; France's minister of the interior could only keep government officials from fleeing Paris by threatening them with severe penalties.
Despite the fact that the British Expeditionary Force was on the verge of completing its evacuation at Dunkirk, and that France was on the verge of collapse to the German invaders, the British War Cabinet was informed that Norway's king, Haakon, had expressed complete confidence that the Allies would win in the end. The king, having made his prediction, then fled Norway for England, his own country now under German occupation.

The confessed killing of two little boys by their mother in Union, S.C., horrified the nation last week.
The incident may also have terrified youngsters across the country.
"Is Mommy going to kill me?" some children reportedly have been asking teachers, nannies, parents and older siblings in the wake of the deaths.
Susan V. Smith, 23, confessed last week to killing her sons, Michael, 3, and Alexander, 14 months, by plunging her car, with the boys still buckled in their safety seats, into a lake.
She reported her boys missing on Oct. 25 and for several days claimed that a carjacker had abducted them. Her televised pleas for their safe return anguished hearts and souls across America and beyond.
For decades, parents have cautioned children to be wary of strangers bearing gifts. But how do you explain to small children that sometimes even mothers harm their own children?

Granny thinks Jethro has turned into a frog after he went swimming and takes him to Dr. Klinger in the bank building. Jethro stops by the bank and takes the frog home. Granny sees him at home and thinks he is cured. Jed decides to learn to be a frogman too, but when he tells Jethro, Granny jumps on him to stop him. Jethro takes Granny to her room, and Granny begs someone to end her suffering. Jed tells her to relax and take a few tranquilizers. Jed practices to be a frogman, and when he ends his practicing, Granny sees a frog in the water, thinking it is Jed. She takes him to Klingers office. She tells the doctor all about Jed, and her rheumatism medicine. She comes home and sees Jed in the house and thinks Klinger has done it again. She is about to drink her moonshine to celebrate, but Jed stops her, thinking she has had enough already. She tries to sneak it, but Jed stops her with that too.
