Gulf of Tonkin Resolution

ARTICLE from the Encyclopædia Britannica

Gulf of Tonkin Resolution, also called Tonkin Gulf Resolution, resolution put before the U.S. Congress by President Lyndon Johnson on Aug. 5, 1964, assertedly in reaction to two allegedly unprovoked attacks by North Vietnamese torpedo boats on the destroyers Maddox and C. Turner Joy of the U.S. Seventh Fleet in the Gulf of Tonkin on August 2 and August 4, respectively. Its stated purpose was to approve and support the determination of the president, as commander in chief, in taking all necessary measures to repel any armed attack against the forces of the United States and to prevent further ... U.S. blasts 5 Iranian targets

Houston Chronicle News Services

MON 04/18/1988 HOUSTON CHRONICLE

MANAMA, Bahrain - The U.S. Navy today destroyed two offshore Iranian oil platforms, sank a defending Iranian patrol boat and bombed two Iranian frigates. Iran attacked oil facilities off Sharjah and fired on at least two U.S. vessels.

The U.S. attack on the Persian Gulf oil platforms came in retaliation for a mine explosion that tore a hole in a U.S. frigate last week, injuring 10 crewmen.

The White House said three U.S. warships ships blasted each Iranian platform. No U.S. casualties were reported in the attacks, and the Iranians fled prior to the shelling, the White House said.

Iran said a number of oil workers aboard the two platforms were killed or injured. It gave no details.

Defense Secretary Frank C. Carlucci said a U.S. helicopter also was fired upon during the raid but was not hit.

One U.S. warship fired missiles at two approaching Iranian jet fighters, but the fighters reversed course; it was unclear whether they were hit, Carlucci said.

He said an Iranian patrol boat fired on the U.S. cruiser Wainwright, which took part in the attack on one of the platforms. The Wainwright was not hit.

Patriotic little fellow, ain't he?
Waving the flag and everything.
Be careful, Frank! He might tear your arm off.
You want me to put the cuffs on him?
Tell me. How come a cute guy like this...
...can turn into a thousand ugly monsters?
You see, this is before it enters the pupal stage.
Plus, it multiplies with water.
- Get the kid some water. - I wouldn't do that.
Sheriff's office.
Yeah, speaking.
What?
Yeah, sure, we'll be right over.
What happened?

Something about a snowplow. A freak accident.
It's the creatures!

Men and women have shown themselves to be very clever at inventing things, right back to the time when they found out how much easier it was to move things about on wheels, up to the present time when rockets and computers make it possible for people to travel away from our world into the mystery of space.

But these technical skills are not enough by themselves. They can only come to the rescue of the planet if we also learn to live by the golden rule which Jesus Christ taught us - "love thy neighbour as thyself".

Many of you will have heard the story of the Good Samaritan, and of how Christ answered the question (from a clever lawyer who was trying to catch him out) "who is my neighbour?".

Jesus told of the traveller who was mugged and left injured on the roadside where several important people saw him, and passed by without stopping to help.

His neighbour was the man who did stop, cared for him, and made sure he was being well looked after before he resumed his own journey.

GUINAN: You know, Picard and I used to talk every now and again, when one of us needed to. I guess I'm just used to having the Captain's ear.

(She sits in Picard's chair)

RIKER: What's on your mind?

GUINAN: I've heard a lot of people talking down in Ten Forward. They expect to be dead in the next day or so. They trust you. They like you. But they don't believe anyone can save them.

RIKER: I'm not sure anyone can.

GUINAN: When a man is convinced he's going to die tomorrow, he'll probably find a way to make it happen. The only one who can turn is around is you.

RIKER: I'll do the best I can.

GUINAN: You're going have to do something you don't want to do. You have to let go of Picard.

RIKER: Maybe you haven't heard. I tried to kill him yesterday.

GUINAN: You tried to kill whatever that is on the Borg ship. Not Picard. Picard is still here with us in this room. If he had died, it would be easier. But he didn't They took him from us a piece at a time. Did he ever tell you why we're so close?

RIKER: No.

GUINAN: Soran is a name I haven't heard in a long time.

PICARD: You remember him?

GUINAN: Yes.

PICARD: Guinan. It is very important that you tell me everything that you know. We think that Soran has developed a weapon, ...a terrible weapon. One that might even give him enough power to destroy...

GUINAN: Soran doesn't care about weapons or power. He just cares about getting back to the Nexus.

PICARD: What's the 'Nexus'?

GUINAN: The energy ribbon that destroyed that ship was just not some random phenomenon travelling through the universe. It's a doorway to another place that we call the Nexus. It's a place that I've tried very, very hard to forget.

PICARD: What happened to you?

GUINAN: It was like being inside joy. As if joy was something tangible ...and you could wrap yourself in it like a blanket. And never in my entire life have I been as content.

PICARD: And then you were beamed away from there.

GUINAN: Pulled. Ripped away. None of us wanted to go. I would have done anything, ...anything to get back there. But once I realised that wasn't possible I learned to live without that.

PICARD: What about Soran?

GUINAN: If he's still obsessed he could be a very, very dangerous man.

PICARD: Why would he destroy a star? ...Thank you, Guinan.

GUINAN: If you go, you're not going to care about anything. Not this ship, Soran, nothing. All you'll want is to stay in the Nexus. And you're not going to want to come back.

William Shatner ... Captain James T. Kirk

After encountering a severe ion storm, the Enterprise visits Star Base 11 for repairs. While there, Kirk files a report about the death of crewman and former friend LCDR Finney, who was taking scientific readings in an externally mounted instrument pod before Kirk needed to jettison it for the safety of the ship. However, the computer log shows that Kirk jettisoned the pod before there was a danger, thereby revealing the captain's willful perjury and culpable negligence in crewman Finney's death. Or so it would seem.

SHAW: You have just heard the testimony of your own personnel officer, that it was an action of the then Ensign Kirk, which placed an unerasable blot on the record of the then Lieutenant Finney. Psychologically, Doctor, is it possible that Lieutenant Finney blamed Kirk for the incident?

MCCOY: It's possible.

SHAW: He could have hated Kirk down through the years, blamed him for being passed over for promotion, blamed him for never being given a command of his own, correct?

MCCOY: He could have.

SHAW: Now, let us hypothesise, Doctor. Is it normal for a person to return affection for hatred?

MCCOY: No.

SHAW: Do we not tend to at first resent and then actively dislike the person who hates us?

MCCOY: Wait a minute. I don't quite follow you.

SHAW: Hypothetically. Would not Captain Smith begin to hate Lieutenant Commander Jones once he learned that Lieutenant Commander Jones hated and detested him?

MCCOY: Well, yes, I suppose it could happen.

SHAW: Then I ask you, is it not possible that Captain Kirk became aware of Lieutenant Commander Finney's hatred toward him and perhaps, even involuntarily, began to reciprocate?

MCCOY: Not Captain Kirk.

SHAW: Any normal human, Doctor. Is it possible?

MCCOY: But he's not that kind of a man.

SHAW: Is it theoretically possible, Doctor?

MCCOY: Yes. It's possible.

SHAW: Thank you. Your witness, Mister Cogley.

COGLEY: No questions.

STONE: You may step down. Mister Cogley. You've listened to testimony from three witnesses, and in neither instance have you availed yourself of your right to cross-examine. Have you abrogated that right?

COGLEY: Well, sir, the truth is, I've been holding back till we get this preliminary business out of the way. I'd like to call Captain Kirk to the stand.

COMPUTER: James T. Kirk, serial number SC937-0176CEC. Service rank, Captain. Position, Starship command. Current assignment, USS Enterprise. Commendations, Palm Leaf Of Axanar Peace Mission, Grankite Order of Tactics, Class of Excellence, Prantares Ribbon of Commendation, Classes first and second

SHAW: May it please the court.

STONE: Court recognises counsel for the prosecution.

SHAW: The prosecution concedes the inestimable record of Captain Kirk.

STONE: Mister Cogley?

COGLEY: I wouldn't want to slow the wheels of progress. But then on the other hand, I wouldn't want those wheels to run over my client in their unbridled haste.

STONE: Continue.

COMPUTER: Awards of valour, Medal of Honour, Silver Palm with Cluster, Starfleet citation for Conspicuous Gallantry, Karagite Order of Heroism

COGLEY: Stop. I think that's enough. I wouldn't want to slow things up too much.

SHAW: Thank you.

COGLEY: Now, Captain, despite what these machines indicate, was there indeed a Red Alert before you jettisoned the pod?

KIRK: Yes, sir, there was.

COGLEY: Please tell us about it.

KIRK: Firstly, I am at a loss to explain the errors in the extract from the computer log. We were in an ion storm. Everyone here in this court knows the dangers involved. I was in command. The decisions were mine, no one else's. Charges of malice have been raised.

Regrade Becomes Political Hotbed

By Jean Godden

Eavesdropping at local restaurants has never been better.

GATES AND GATES: Preston Thorgrimson Shidler Gates & Ellis initiated a new speakers' program Monday at the Rainier Club. First up was Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates III. (Gates's dad is Bill Gates Jr., a managing partner of the firm.)

About 200 people attended. But, when the server brought the check, she presented it to the wrong Bill Gates. As the Microsoft chairman puzzled over the bill, the audience erupted in laughter. The waitress said, "I just saw the name tag. I'm so embarrassed."

MAYOR WHOOPS: Seattle Fire Chief Claude Harris came up one mayor short last Friday. Harris was presenting First Citizen awards to Capt. Al Haynes, who saved lives by piloting a crippled DC-10 into the Sioux City, Iowa, airport and to Gary Brown, emergency-services director for Iowa's Woodbury County.

The chief began by saying, "On behalf of Mayor Charles Royer . . ." The crowd groaned and chuckled.

"Doggone it, I do it every time," said Harris. "I've worked for both men and both names start with `R.' "

He continued the presentation, reaching a perfect place to rectify his error. The chief said, "On behalf of Mayor Rrrrr - Norman B. Rice . . ."

Long Lines Of Investors As Starbucks' Stock Arrives On Wall Street

By Greg Heberlein

Starbucks, the king of coffee beans, sold its first shares of stock to the public today, and lines were as long as the queues at its 140 locations in seven metropolitan areas.

Starbucks' 2.1 million shares were priced to start trading at $17 a share, but the stock opened $4 higher at $21, and closed at $21.50. At that price, it made Chairman Howard Schultz's 1.1 million shares worth $23.5 million.

Fear of Flying: Hydraulic Loss Is One of Worst

July 20, 1989|JOHN M. BRODER and DAVID LAUTER | Times Staff Writers

WASHINGTON — The "complete hydraulic failure" reported by the pilot of doomed United Airlines Flight 232 is one of the most feared events in flying, rendering even a sophisticated three-engine jet like the DC-10 virtually uncontrollable.

The wide-bodied DC-10 has three independent hydraulic systems that operate all the plane's control surfaces on its wings and tail, its landing gear and its brakes.

A failure of all three hydraulic systems is "rare, rare, rare," said John Gallipault, director of the private Aviation Safety Institute in Worthington, Ohio. "Design engineers calculate that to happen something like once every 300 years."

The X-5 Ship #1 (50-1838) was flown by NACA from 1952 to late 1955. The X-5 Ship #2 (50-1839) was operated only by Bell and the Air Force and was lost in a spin accident in 1953

The X-5 was a single-place aircraft powered by an Allison J-45-A jet engine, and measuring 36 feet in length with a wingspan of 19 feet (with the wings swept back 60 degrees). The X-5 weighed 10,000 pounds when fully fueled.

Results of the research program demonstrated that the variable-wing-sweep principle worked. With the wings fully extended the low-speed performance was improved for take-off and landing and when swept back the high speed performance was improved and drag reduced. The pilots found they could use the variable wing sweep as a tactical control to out-perform the
accompanying escort aircraft during research missions. The X-5 flight tests provided some of the design background for the
F-111 and the Navy F-14 tactical aircraft.

TIMOTHY: (Dark hair, red shirt) I understand you're laying over for repairs. Big job?

KIRK: Couple of days.

TIMOTHY: You moving out then?

KIRK: In a hurry to see me go?

TIMOTHY: Oh, I just wondered how long it'd take to get a new records officer.

KIRK: You can talk plainer than that.

TIMOTHY: I can, but I think the point's been made. Ben was a friend of ours.

MCCOY: Come on, Jim. Let's go.

KIRK: Go on. Finish. Ben was a friend of yours, and

MCCOY: Jim.

KIRK: Go on. I'm waiting to hear the rest.

MIKE: Why don't you tell us?

KIRK: What would be the point? You've already made up your minds. Excuse me, Bones.

(Leaves, just as a lady in a floaty green dress enters.)

MCCOY: If you have any doubt, that was indeed Captain James Kirk of the Enterprise.

SHAW: Yes, I know. Are you a friend of his?

MCCOY: In these trying times, one of the few. Doctor Leonard McCoy. And you?

SHAW: Areel Shaw. And I'm a friend, too. An old one.

MCCOY: All of my old friends look like doctors. All of his look like you. Well, you might as well join me for a drink. With this inquiry coming up, he's going to need all the friends he can get.

The Walking Dead

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 11/03/10 6:09 AM
In that line of thought last weekend about Kerry Burgess, which all happened, I feel certain before I watched the premiere of the "The Walking Dead" television series, I thought over in my mind of the things he and I talked about. He was supposed to make contact with some group, which in some line of thought would immediately show up here and knock on the door and ask for him, while other times he would make the contact first to that group. We talked about the differences he could see from what he knew from 16 years ago and by far the greatest change are the flat screen monitors and television and we discussed some other technology details, such as flash drives, but not much else had really changed that much.

One consistent line of thought that I thought over several times probably over the course of about a day, was that he was the one who would drive me out to Tiger, Washington, and he didn't know why but that was what he was going to do. He made a call, got some transportation and we drove out through the night in a white Toyota pickup truck that I guess was the Tundra model. He didn't know why we were going there but when we got there, we stopped at that Riverside Cemetery. I walked out into the cemetery and the dead people started rising from under the ground and they were restored to the appearance when they died. They were mingling around and I talked to the first one and that dead person could not see Kerry Burgess as he stood near the pickup truck near the highway but that dead person could see a person who had wandered nearby and was looking at us. The dead person went over to that other person and something happened in that the dead person took over the body of that unidentified person who had wander over to look at us. The person then became a bloodthirsty zombie who still could not see Kerry Burgess and I guess that zombie then went off to infect other humans. As I walked through the cemetery, other dead people began to rise from under the ground and they mingled around until I told them they were free and they all went off somewhere. Kerry Burgess drove me back to here although we stopped at another cemetery along the way and the process repeated it and when we got back here I walked out into that cemetery nearby and the same thing happened there too and I thought about a lot of details and I don't think that line of thought extended beyond that point. Oh, yeah, Kerry Burgess had access to a house and I stayed there in that house and I watched the news for developments.

Goddamnit my foot hurts. It feels like someone hits it with a sledgehammer every night when I am asleep.

And - damn - that is my favorite foot for kicking ass. If I have to literally start kicking ass, I am going to have to use the other foot.

I am quite certain this is the condition I am experiencing. If I go back to the VA for treatment, they will probably just want to cut it off with a rusty hacksaw. That would probably be actually less painful than that bowel obstruction I had where the doctor was trying to cause my intestines to rupture.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plantar_fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is a painful inflammatory condition caused by excessive wear to the plantar fascia of the foot. The pain usually is felt on the underside of the heel, and is often most intense with the first steps of the day. It is commonly associated with long periods of weight bearing. Obesity, weight gain, jobs that require a lot of walking on hard surfaces, shoes with little or no arch support, and inactivity are also associated with the condition. This condition often results in a heel spur on the calcaneus, in which case it is the underlying condition, and not the spur itself, which produces the pain.

This was a pleasant surprise. I was disappointed though when I first saw them that they were preparing to leave. I think this is the one at the link below. I love these ships. Who needs a parade when you can watch a U.S. Navy warship getting underway? If I could choose any ship I wanted for a personal yacht, it would be a Burke-class destroyer.

Subject: as of a drama

In regard to his companions his mind wavered between two opinions, according to his mood. Sometimes he inclined to believing them all heroes. In fact, he usually admired in secret the superior development of the higher qualities in others. He could conceive of men going very insignificantly about the world bearing a load of courage unseen, and although he had known many of his comrades through boyhood, he began to fear that his judgment of them had been blind. Then, in other moments, he flouted these theories, and assured him that his fellows were all privately wondering and quaking.

His emotions made him feel strange in the presence of men who talked excitedly of a prospective battle as of a drama they were about to witness, with nothing but eagerness and curiosity apparent in their faces. It was often that he suspected them to be liars.

He did not pass such thoughts without severe condemnation of himself. He dinned reproaches at times. He was convicted by himself of many shameful crimes against the gods of traditions.

In his great anxiety his heart was continually clamoring at what he considered the intolerable slowness of the generals. They seemed content to perch tranquilly on the river bank, and leave him bowed down by the weight of a great problem. He wanted it settled forthwith. He could not long bear such a load, he said. Sometimes his anger at the commanders reached an acute stage, and he grumbled about the camp like a veteran.
