SHEPPARD
I thought you should know—round one was a draw.

MCKAY
I don't like the sound of that.

SHEPPARD
Me neither. I took some fire.

MCKAY
Are you injured?

SHEPPARD
Yeah, that's what I mean by "I took some fire." But I don't think it's too bad, but my P-90's out of commission. He found a 9-mil in the jumper, figured out how to use it pretty fast.

[Sheppard checks the magazine on his pistol.]

MCKAY
Well, the Wraith will heal itself.

SHEPPARD
Yeah. No kidding. I put at least twenty shots into him, and a couple more for good measure. I've seen Wraith go down and stay down with far less. This guy's different somehow.

INT—CRASHED WRAITH SHIP

[McKay gets up, weapon raised.]

MCKAY
You hear that?

GALL
No.

MCKAY
I thought I heard something. Maybe there's another one hibernating.

GALL
No.

MCKAY
It's been too long. I think the Major could be in trouble, and if he's in trouble, we're in trouble.

GALL
Then go.

MCKAY
Do you think you could move?

GALL
Not a chance. I'm not going anywhere.

MCKAY
Okay. That's okay.

GALL
Go. Rodney, just go. Save the day.

[McKay faces the way out while talking to Gall.]

MCKAY
What I really want to do is call him on the radio, but I'm afraid if he's hiding from the Wraith, I might inadvertently give away his position, and let's face it, what chance would we have against the Wraith if Sheppard can't take him out? I was hoping you'd be strong enough, then I—

[Behind him, Gall shoots himself. McKay turns around and sees him.]

MCKAY
(devastated)
Oh, no.

EXT—NEAR PUDDLE JUMPER ON PLANET, DAY

[Sheppard watches from behind the boulder as the Wraith wakes and gets up.]

SHEPPARD
You've got to be kidding me.

WRAITH
I have fed upon countless thousands of humans and Lantians, even upon my own crew, and I will feed upon you before this day is done.

[The Wraith fires its pistol at Sheppard, who fires back.]

Scientist theorized anthrax mail attack

FBI searched apartment of expert linked to study

By Scott Shane

Sun Staff

June 27, 2002

Dr. Steven J. Hatfill, the former Fort Detrick biodefense researcher whose Frederick apartment was searched Tuesday by the FBI, commissioned a 1999 study that described a fictional terrorist attack in which an envelope containing weapons-grade anthrax is opened in an office.

The study, written by a veteran of the old U.S. bioweapons program, was submitted to Hatfill and a colleague at Science Applications International Corp., the McLean, Va., defense contractor where he then worked.

It discusses the danger of anthrax spores spreading through the air and the requirements for decontamination after various kinds of attacks. The author, William C. Patrick III, describes placing 2.5 grams of Bacillus globigii, an anthrax simulant, in a standard business envelope - slightly more than the estimated amount of anthrax in each of the letters that killed five people last fall.

The study, portions of which were read to The Sun by a person who has a copy, illustrates the central paradox of the FBI's nine-month quest for the anthrax mailer: The perpetrator could be a respected American scientist in the biodefense field, where he acquired the skills he then used to kill.

Anthrax Articles From The Hartford Courant

The Case Of Dr. Hatfill: Suspect Or Pawn

FBI scrutiny of the ex-Army microbiologist intensifies in its anthrax probe, and speculation grows about why the agency is looking at him.

By DAVE ALTIMARI, JACK DOLAN And DAVID LIGHTMAN Courant Staff Writers

June 27 2002

Former Army microbiologist Steven J. Hatfill is either a pawn in an FBI attempt to recharge its stalled anthrax investigation, or a potential suspect who holds critical clues to solving the case that has bedeviled the agency for the past nine months.

Those two interpretations of the FBI's high-profile search of Hatfill's residence circulated through the scientific and law enforcement communities Wednesday - one day after agents removed garbage bags full of evidence from a Frederick, Md., apartment complex, and, as TV news crews circled overhead, loaded them into a large rental truck .

"Their intent was clearly to put his name in the public eye. The only question is why," said a microbiologist who has been interviewed by the FBI.

"It was either strictly for show - a bone tossed to Congress and the media - or they want to put pressure on him by starting a public investigation to stimulate the stalled non-public investigation," said the microbiologist, who would speak only on condition of anonymity.
