The term show trial is a pejorative description of a type of highly public trial in which there is a strong connotation that the judicial authorities have already determined the guilt of the defendant. The actual trial has as its only goal to present the accusation and the verdict to the public as an impressive example and as a warning. Show trials tend to be retributive rather than correctional justice.
Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc show trials
Moscow Trials
Show trials were a significant part of Joseph Stalin's regime. The Moscow Trials of the Great Purge period (1937-38) in the Soviet Union are characteristic.
The authorities staged the actual trials meticulously. If defendants refused to "cooperate", i.e., to admit guilt for their alleged and mostly fabricated crimes, they did not go on public trial, but suffered execution nonetheless. This happened, for example during the prosecution of the so-called "Labour Peasant Party", a party invented by NKVD, which, in particular, assigned the notable economist Alexander Chayanov to it.
Some solid public evidence of what really happened during the Moscow Trials came to the West through the Dewey Commission. After the collapse of the Soviet Union, more information became available. This discredited Walter Duranty, who claimed that these trials were actually fair.
Eastern Bloc party show trials

Following some dissent within ruling communist parties throughout the Eastern Bloc, especially after the 1948 Tito-Stalin split, several party purges occurred, with several hundred thousand members purged in several countries. In addition to rank-and-file member purges, prominent communists were purged, with some subjected to public show trials. These were more likely to be instigated, and sometimes orchestrated, by the Kremlin or even Stalin himself, as he had done in the earlier Moscow Trials.

Manning, who turned 24 on Saturday, is accused of methodically leaking a massive trove of classified information taken from a secret U.S. intelligence network. He faces more than 20 criminal charges, including aiding the enemy and transmitting defense information in violation of the Espionage Act. If convicted, he could be sentenced to life in a military prison.
Mander's testimony also revealed that another man, a former Department of Energy employee named Jason Katz, was being investigated by the FBI on suspicion of possession of an encrypted video of an airstrike in Granai, Afghanistan. The video was copied by Manning from a case folder on a U.S. Central Command military server, Mander said. Katz was a computer analyst at Brookhaven National Laboratory in New York from February 2009 to March 2010 and allegedly had a copy of the encrypted video on his personal laptop.
Manning's attorneys focused some questions on the soldier's struggle with his sexual orientation, asserting that the Army violated its own procedures by ignoring evidence that Manning was gay and in violation of the military's "don't ask, don't tell" policy, a recently repealed rule that barred openly gay service members from serving.
In April 2010, Manning emailed a supervisor a photograph of himself dressed as a woman and wrote that he was struggling with "gender identity disorder," said the senior intelligence officer in charge of Manning in Iraq, Capt. Steven Lim.

With his custom-made "humanist" dog tags and distrust of authority, Bradley Manning was no conventional soldier.
Ostracized by peers in Baghdad, busted for assaulting a fellow soldier and disdainful of the military's inattention to computer security, the 22-year-old intelligence analyst styled himself a "hactivist."
On Tuesday, the U.S. Army charged him with multiple counts of mishandling and leaking classified data and putting national security at risk.

Propaganda, the coordinated attempt to influence public opinion through the use of media, was skillfully used by the NSDAP in the years leading up to and during Adolf Hitler's leadership of Germany (1933–1945). National Socialist propaganda provided a crucial instrument for acquiring and maintaining power, and for the implementation of their policies, including the pursuit of total war and the extermination of millions of people in the Holocaust.
In power (1933–39)
Before World War II, Nazi propaganda strategy, officially promulgated by the Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda, stressed several themes. Their goals were to establish external enemies (countries that allegedly inflicted the Treaty of Versailles on Germany) and internal enemies, such as Jews, Romani, homosexuals, and Bolsheviks. Hitler and Nazi propagandists played on the anti-Semitism and resentment present in Germany. The Jews were blamed for things such as robbing the German people of their hard work while themselves avoiding physical labour. Der Stürmer, a Nazi propaganda newspaper, told Germans that Jews kidnapped small children before Passover because “Jews need the blood of a Christian child, maybe, to mix in with their Matzah.” Posters, films, cartoons, and fliers were seen throughout Germany which attacked the Jewish community, such as the 1940 film The Eternal Jew.
Reaching out to ethnic Germans in other countries such as Czechoslovakia, France, Poland, the Soviet Union and the Baltic states was another aim of Nazi party propaganda. In Mein Kampf, Hitler makes a direct remark to those outside of Germany. He states that pain and misery is forced upon ethnic Germans outside of Germany, and that they dream of common fatherland. He finished by stating they needed to fight for one’s nationality. Throughout Mein Kampf, he pushed Germans worldwide to make the struggle for political power and independence their main focus.
Nazi propaganda efforts then focused on creating external enemies.

The top U.S. military officer says the leak of U.S. military documents about Afghanistan could put American lives at risk.
Adm. Mike Mullen, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, told reporters in Baghdad Tuesday that he was "appalled" by the leak.
He says "there is a real potential threat there to put American lives at risk."
American officials have condemned the weekend release of more than 90,000 secret U.S. military documents on the Afghanistan war by an organization called WikiLeaks.

Gerald Herbert Holtom was a professional designer and artist.
A graduate of the Royal College of Art, Holtom was a conscientious objector in World War II. On 21 February 1958 he designed the Nuclear Disarmament logo for the first Aldermaston March, organised by the Direct Action Committee against Nuclear War, Easter 1958 (4–7 April). The logo was not copyrighted, and was available for use by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, also founded in 1958; it later became known in the wider world as a general-purpose peace symbol.

In 1958, British artist Gerald Holtom drew a circle with three lines inside, intending the design to be a symbol for the Direct Action Committee Against Nuclear War (DAC). The design incorporates a circle with the lines within it representing the simplified positions of two semaphore letters (the system of using flags to send information great distances, such as from ship to ship). The letters "N" and "D" were used to represent "nuclear disarmament." (The "N" is formed by a person holding a flag in each hand and then pointing them toward the ground at a 45 degree angle. The "D" is formed by holding one flag straight down and one straight up.)

Federal officials have arrested an Army intelligence analyst who boasted of giving classified U.S. combat video and hundreds of thousands of classified State Department records to whistleblower site Wikileaks, Wired.com has learned.
PFC Bradley Manning, 22, of Potomac, Maryland, was stationed at Forward Operating Base Hammer, 40 miles east of Baghdad, where he was arrested nearly two weeks ago by the Army’s Criminal Investigation Division.
Manning came to the attention of the FBI and Army investigators after he contacted former hacker Adrian Lamo late last month over instant messenger and e-mail. Lamo had just been the subject of a Wired.com article. Very quickly in his exchange with the ex-hacker, Manning claimed to be the Wikileaks video leaker.
“If you had unprecedented access to classified networks 14 hours a day 7 days a week for 8+ months, what would you do?” Manning asked.
From the chat logs provided by Lamo, and examined by Wired.com, it appears Manning sensed a kindred spirit in the ex-hacker. He discussed personal issues that got him into trouble with his superiors and left him socially isolated, and said he had been demoted and was headed for an early discharge from the Army.
When Manning told Lamo that he leaked a quarter-million classified embassy cables, Lamo contacted the Army, and then met with Army CID investigators and the FBI at a Starbucks near his house in Carmichael, California, where he passed the agents a copy of the chat logs. At their second meeting with Lamo on May 27, FBI agents from the Oakland Field Office told the hacker that Manning had been arrested the day before in Iraq by Army CID investigators.

On May 27, before Lamo’s scheduled second meeting with the feds was set to take place that afternoon at 4 pm, Poulsen spent a few hours with Lamo.
“That was when I became aware of the full details of what Manning claimed to have leaked, and that’s when I learned Manning’s name,” says Poulsen. He says he drove away with the chats on a thumb drive around 3 pm.
Lamo told Poulsen on the morning of May 28 that, at the previous day’s meeting, he had been told Manning had been arrested the day before—May 26.

NEW YORK -- When 22-year-old Adrian Lamo pled guilty Thursday to breaking into The New York Times' computer network, he didn't seem nervous, scared or contrite. He looked worn out. Old.
Since his surrender to federal authorities in September 2003, Lamo's friends, far-flung relatives and former co-workers have all been questioned by the FBI, he claims. Banks won't take his money. Employers are wary of hiring him. And, for the first time in years, the young man dubbed the "Homeless Hacker" for his habit of sleeping on friends' couches and in abandoned buildings has been ordered by a federal judge to remain under his parents' roof.
Now, Lamo is trying to keep his next home from being a jail cell. Facing indictment, he agreed to a plea bargain with federal prosecutors. Under the terms of the deal, Lamo pled guilty to one felony, accessing the computers of The New York Times without permission. Another felony charge was dropped. He admitted to entering his name into the newspaper's database of opinion-page contributors. And he said he used the Times' accounts with the LexisNexis search service illicitly.
"I know that I crossed the line," Lamo told U.S. District Judge Naomi Reice Buchwald in her courtroom overlooking Manhattan's East River.
Lamo faces six to 12 months of jail time under the sentencing guidelines for his crime. But he and his court-appointed public defender, Sean Hecker, are hopeful that Buchwald will put Lamo in a halfway house, or under home detention. Sentencing will take place on April 8, to coincide with Lamo's spring break from American River College in Sacramento, California.
In addition, Lamo is bound to pay a fine of $2,000 to $20,000. And he's obliged to reimburse the money that his offenses supposedly cost the Times and LexisNexis -- $30,000 to $70,000.
But how exactly Lamo will pay the Times back is unclear. Lamo said he's been trying to get a job, in addition to taking classes as a college journalism major. But he's been luckless, so far.
"How the hell do I tell employers what I've been up to for the last three years?" Lamo mused.

The epic courtroom battle between the WikiLeaks suspect Bradley Manning and the US government over his alleged pre-trial punishment has drawn to a close, with the soldier's lawyer accusing the military of treating him like a zoo animal and the prosecution countering that in its view he was entitled to have just seven days removed from any eventual sentence.
The two-week hearing at Fort Meade, Maryland, lasted far longer than intended and turned into a dramatic spectacle in which Manning effectively turned his court-martial on its head and put the US military on trial. In his closing argument, the soldier's main civilian lawyer, David Coombs, said that the most amazing element of his nine-month solitary confinement under suicide-prevention restrictions at the marine brig in Quantico, Virginia, was that his spirit had remained unbroken.

Bradley Manning has failed to persuade a military judge to throw out half of the counts against him in a pre-trial hearing before his court martial for allegedly leaking hundreds of thousands of state secrets to WikiLeaks.
Colonel Denise Lind, presiding over the proceedings at Fort Meade in Maryland, rejected a defence motion that 10 of the 22 counts against the US soldier should be dismissed. The decision leaves Manning facing a possible sentence of life in military custody for allegedly having been the source of the WikiLeaks publications that included war logs from Afghanistan and Iraq, video footage of a US helicopter attack on civilians and diplomatic cables from around the world.
The ruling came at the end of the third day of hearings at Fort Meade that have been dominated by complaints from Manning's lawyers that he is not being allowed a fair trial. The soldier's lead civilian lawyer, David Coombs, told the court that Manning's military prosecutors had been lapse in their obligation to hand over evidence that could help him defend himself.
As a result of the legal tussles, the judge ordered extra pre-trial hearings to be scheduled and made it clear to the prosecution that they had to step up their efforts to provide full disclosure of materials to the defence that could help Manning prove his innocence or reduce any sentence. As a result, the full court martial will be delayed from September to November or possibly January.
But Lind refused to meet a request on the part of the defence to throw out many of the charges against Manning. Two of the 10 that Coombs had asked to be dismissed related to the soldier's access to closed military computers.
Manning was employed as an intelligence analyst at the Forward Operating Base Hammer outside Baghdad between 2009 and 2010. His job was to pore over databases relating to insurgent activity in Iraq and search for patterns of behaviour that would aid his military commanders in the framing of strategy.
In the pursuit of that work, Manning was authorised to enter the closed computer network known as the Secret Internet Protocol Router Network, or SIPRNet.
Yet he is charged with having "exceeded authorised access when he accessed those classified government computers for an unauthorized or expressly forbidden purpose."
Manning's defence team objected to that more expansive interpretation of the term "authorised access", arguing that he was clearly permitted to use the computer network and that his purpose for doing so was irrelevant to the charge. The judge agreed with that legal interpretation, but said she did not have sufficient evidence to dismiss the two counts.
Her nuanced ruling, however, puts the onus on the prosecution to up its game in pressing these two counts at trial.
Lind also rejected a defence motion to dismiss a further eight counts. The defence argued that the charges, that all relate to unauthorised possession and disclosure of classified information, were so vaguely worded as to be unconstitutional.
In these cases, the judge disagreed and allowed the charges to stand.
The delay in the preparation for trial means that by the time Manning does finally face a jury he will have already been in custoy for almost three years. He was arrested on 26 May 2010 and is now being held at Fort Leavenworth in Kansas.

Ocean Odyssey spent the next several years as a rusting hulk in the docks of Dundee, Scotland. Her availability prompted Boeing to establish the Sea Launch consortium, for which she was bought in 1993 by Kværner Rosenberg of Stavanger, Norway, and renamed L/P Odyssey.
From late 1995 to May 1997, Kværner extended the length of the platform and added a pair of support columns and additional propulsion systems. The upper deck — the location of the former drill floor — was rebuilt to accommodate the launch pad and launch vehicle service hangar. In May 1997, Ocean Odyssey arrived at Kværner Vyborg Shipyard for the installation of the launch vehicle equipment itself.
By 1999, the vessel was ready for service, and on March 27, 1999, a Zenit-3SL rocket successfully launched a demonstration satellite to a geostationary transfer orbit. The first commercial launch occurred on October 9, 1999, with the orbiting of the DirecTV 1-R satellite.
2007 launch failure
On January 30, 2007, a Zenit-3SL carrying the NSS-8 satellite failed to launch and exploded aboard Odyssey. There were no injuries. Damage to the launch platform was mostly superficial, though blast deflectors underneath the platform were knocked loose and lost when they fell into the sea.

Microsoft is buying Groove Networks, a Boston-area company started by industry pioneer Ray Ozzie, to broaden its lineup of office productivity and collaboration tools.
Raikes, Ozzie and Chairman Bill Gates announced the merger in a conference call this morning. Gates said he's long thought about hiring Ozzie and his team.
Terms of the deal were not disclosed but Groove has received $155 million in financing since it was started in 1997.
