Project Gutenberg's The Time Machine, by H. G. (Herbert George) Wells

Title: The Time Machine

Author: H. G. (Herbert George) Wells

'Looking at these stars suddenly dwarfed my own troubles and all the gravities of terrestrial life. I thought of their unfathomable distance, and the slow inevitable drift of their movements out of the unknown past into the unknown future. I thought of the great precessional cycle that the pole of the earth describes. Only forty times had that silent revolution occurred during all the years that I had traversed. And during these few revolutions all the activity, all the traditions, the complex organizations, the nations, languages, literatures, aspirations, even the mere memory of Man as I knew him, had been swept out of existence. Instead were these frail creatures who had forgotten their high ancestry, and the white Things of which I went in terror. Then I thought of the Great Fear that was between the two species, and for the first time, with a sudden shiver, came the clear knowledge of what the meat I had seen might be. Yet it was too horrible! I looked at little Weena sleeping beside me, her face white and starlike under the stars, and forthwith dismissed the thought.

'Through that long night I held my mind off the Morlocks as well as I could, and whiled away the time by trying to fancy I could find signs of the old constellations in the new confusion. The sky kept very clear, except for a hazy cloud or so. No doubt I dozed at times. Then, as my vigil wore on, came a faintness in the eastward sky, like the reflection of some colourless fire, and the old moon rose, thin and peaked and white. And close behind, and overtaking it, and overflowing it, the dawn came, pale at first, and then growing pink and warm. No Morlocks had approached us. Indeed, I had seen none upon the hill that night. And in the confidence of renewed day it almost seemed to me that my fear had been unreasonable. I stood up and found my foot with the loose heel swollen at the ankle and painful under the heel; so I sat down again, took off my shoes, and flung them away.

'I awakened Weena, and we went down into the wood, now green and pleasant instead of black and forbidding. We found some fruit wherewith to break our fast. We soon met others of the dainty ones, laughing and dancing in the sunlight as though there was no such thing in nature as the night. And then I thought once more of the meat that I had seen. I felt assured now of what it was, and from the bottom of my heart I pitied this last feeble rill from the great flood of humanity. Clearly, at some time in the Long-Ago of human decay the Morlocks' food had run short. Possibly they had lived on rats and such-like vermin. Even now man is far less discriminating and exclusive in his food than he was—far less than any monkey. His prejudice against human flesh is no deep-seated instinct. And so these inhuman sons of men——! I tried to look at the thing in a scientific spirit. After all, they were less human and more remote than our cannibal ancestors of three or four thousand years ago. And the intelligence that would have made this state of things a torment had gone. Why should I trouble myself? These Eloi were mere fatted cattle, which the ant-like Morlocks preserved and preyed upon—probably saw to the breeding of.

"Who Made Who"

Video games she play me
Face it on the level but it take you every time on a one on one
Feel it runnin' down your spine
Nothin' gonna save your one last dime
'cause it own you
Through and through

The data bank know my number
Says I gotta pay
'cause I made the grade last year
Feel it when I turn the screw
Kick you round the world
There ain't a thing that it can't do
Do to you, yeah

Who made who, who made you
Who made who
Ain't nobody told you
Who made who, who made you
If you made them and they made you
Who pick up the bill and who made who
Who made who
Who turned the screw
Yeah

Satellite send me picture
Get it in the eye
Take it to the wire
Spinnin' like a dynamo
Feel it goin' round and round
Runnin' outta chips
You got no line in an eight bit town
So don't look down, no

Who made who, who made you
Who made who
Ain't nobody told you
Who made who, who made you
If you made them and they made you
Who pick up the bill and who made who
Ain't nobody told you
Who made who
Who made you
Who made who
Who made who
Yeah
Nobody told you

Radio Address to the Nation on Armed Forces Day and Defense Spending

May 18, 1985

Well, not long ago the Ambassador was in Washington and told me the sequel to that incident. I'd repeated a story in a talk that was carried on our Voice of America radio program, and there in that base in Germany the young trooper heard the broadcast and knew that I'd received his message. His commanding officer said that he ran down the company street yelling: "The system works! The system works!"

Toasts at a White House Dinner for the Prince and Princess of Wales

November 9th, 1985

The President. Your Royal Highnesses, Sir Oliver and Lady Wright, and Ambassador and Mrs. Price, ladies and gentlemen, Nancy and I are deeply honored to welcome the Prince and Princess of Wales to the White House. Permit me to add our congratulations to Prince Charles on his birthday, just 5 days away, and express also our great happiness that we have been able to have this affair with Princess Diana, here on her first trip to the United States—that we should be able to share in that first trip.

In his 1941 address before a Joint Session of the United States Congress, Prime Minister Churchill remarked, "I cannot help reflecting that if my father had been American and my mother British, instead of the other way around, I might have got here on my own." [Laughter] But Your Royal Highnesses, the reception you've received here suggests that if you had been American, you might well have gotten to this house on your own. [Laughter]

Our two countries are bound together by innumerable ties of ancient history and present friendship. Our language, our law, our democratic system of government, our fierce belief in the God-given right of men to be free—all of these we owe to you. We've stood together through two great world conflicts. Today we go on, shoulder to shoulder, in an alliance to protect freedom and democracy.

This evening we've gathered on a happy occasion, a celebration of the "Treasure Houses of Britain," perhaps the most magnificent exhibition ever mounted and five centuries of British achievement, five centuries of elegance, beauty, and charm; I should add, wit. When Nancy and I toured the exhibition, we were struck by a settee from Balmoral Castle, constructed almost entirely of deer antlers. I've been wondering ever since whether something like that could be done with cattle horns out on the ranch. [Laughter] But one misadventure in the corral one day has taught me that it might be more painful than pleasant, so— [laughter]

I was thinking last night about a memory featured prominently in my symbolic memory. It is of a time in 1985 when I was on the Taylor. It was during that same deployment when I watched the Estocin run aground in Key West. We were traveling along shoulder to shoulder with a Soviet battlegroup that was touring the oil pltform fields off the coast of Texas and Louisiana. During that time, I still worked for the Boatswain's Mates

The part of this memory that seems to be operative is that I remember thinking several times that I turned 20 years old in "the Gulf."

I remember my friend writing in my high school yearbook about me being "top guy" in the Navy. Is it possible that I was some kind of advisor to Cruise when he was filming Top Gun? I have a lot of memories of seeing F-14's in 1985, but they are explainable because in my memory, we were escorting a carrier during that time, where our function was to extract pilots that went into the water after take off. I have a memory of me and a buddy on the Taylor. We were standing on the flight deck of the Taylor after helo exercises.

I have been wondering for a few hours today, maybe yesterday too, about a couple memories I have as Kerry Burgess in the Navy. Actually, there are several memories counted the ones that started this train of thought. I think it started early this morning or last night when I started thinking again about those training exercises in Charleston while on the Taylor. I wrote about them a couple years ago. One was that boiler room fire exercise and the other was the simulated missile strike on our ship where we then had to patch the hole to stop the flooding. I can still hear, or so it seems, the loud clanging noise from when the exercise started by someone outside the ship compartment mock-up
hitting on the side with a sledgehammer. Then I remembered another time on the Taylor when we were out to sea. It was the first time the Taylor fired a missile. I was in the forward repair locker at the time which was directly under the missile launcher. I told someone later that when the missile fired, it felt as though someone had hit me on the top of my helmet with a sledgehammer.

I wonder why I have these memories of two particular training exercises on the Taylor. One was that simulator where the locked us into a ship compartment, banged on the bulkhead to simulate a missile hit, and then flooded the room with cold river water as we were supposed to fix the hole. The compartment would have flooded if I hadn't open a porthole in the bulkhead. Before that was the boiler room simulator where I was the Number 1 hose man and had to go into the building with the water covered with burning oil under the deck grating. I had to push the flames back with the hose and I was so close to hyperventilating that I was breaking the face mask seal of my breathing apparatus. It was also so dark I couldn't see a single thing. I had no idea the fire was even out.

I have wondered often about something said to me after the 9/11 attacks. It was that time in September 2001 when I was with Cognos in the Microsoft office in Charlotte. One of the Cognos employees said something to me about how I was the one person she wanted to be around during that time. We talked a little about what to do if hijackers took over an airplane as we were planning to fly back to our respective cities. People were saying things like that because they knew who I really was. I didn't understand why she was so confident in being around me though. I felt confident in myself, but I'm not Superman.

Today will be a special treat, featuring the first annual "Miss Nude Feminist Pageant." Quinn heads downstairs and greets his mom, who mentions that Quinn is too much like his father.

Mrs. Mallory: Up all night, working crazy hours. Look what happened to him. He worked himself to death.

Quinn: Mom, Dad was hit by a car.

Details about my recent sleep are very fuzzy today. Can't remember for sure when I woke up. 3 am maybe. Or maybe shortly after midnight, can't really remember as I usually can. Remember dreaming something about driving my Jeep. Then I returned to it where it was parked in a parking lot after I was traveling through some passageways, hallways in a transit facility maybe. The only part I remember clearly is where a woman, I assume was my imaginary girlfriend asked me out for drinks or something. I told her we needed to keep it really casual though because all I had to wear was sweatpants. Kind of the downside to dating a homeless person I reflect now as I write this. She told me she would wear something with holes in it. I hope that was her in my dream, although the woman in the dream seemed to be someone unfamilar though. But I have noticed that happening with other people I know. They are represented, somehow, by a different person, but I think of them as someone specific. I feel like that is part of the manipulation. I have noticed something similar in real dreams, but I don't think it is the same here. I think they are disquising themselves in my dream for some reason. Anyway, if it really was her, she actually doesn't have to worry about dressing down if we were to go out. Of course, if I have my way, it would be a moot point because why would I want to go out with her when I am in such an ugly situation? At the minimum, I would want to be back to work so that I have regained some independence. And hey, next time you are in my dreams, dear imaginary girlfriend, how about wearing a bikini? Red would be good, or yellow maybe. That would be sweet!

Khrushchev has also shown a penchant for clever stratagems designed to entrap and confuse opponents and to increase pressures on them to grant concessions. His exploitation of the U–2 incident was intended to produce a storm of protests against US policy and to embarrass President Eisenhower on the eve of the Paris summit conference. Khrushchev confined his initial announcement of the shoot-down to bare details and then sat back to await the expected disavowal from Washington. After the US issued the cover story of a missing NASA research U–2, Khrushchev announced that he had withheld information that the pilot and aircraft were in Soviet hands, “because had we told everything at once, the Americans would have invented another version; just look how many silly things they have said.”

I know I’ve always thought that it seems almost incomprehensible to think that we’re alone in this universe, but doesn’t the fact that we haven’t been contacted yet by ETs mean that life may in fact not exist anywhere else? Ok, this is a bit of a stretch of an analogy, and a bit silly to boot, but this line of thought is kind of like how I have to assume that our species never develops the ability to time travel because if we ever did wouldn’t we somehow know about it (or perhaps the second we do develop it and test it out, we rip open the space-time continuum and destroy the universe just like Doc Brown always feared).
