Gleichschaltung (meaning "coordination", "making the same", "bringing into line", is a Nazi term for the process by which the Nazi regime successively established a system of totalitarian control and tight coordination over all aspects of society. The historian Richard J. Evans translated the term as "forcible-coordination" in his most recent work on Nazi Germany.
Among the goals of this policy were to bring about adherence to a specific doctrine and way of thinking and to control as many aspects of life as possible.
The apex of the Nazification of Germany was in the resolutions approved during the Nuremberg Rally of 1935, when the symbols of the Party and the State were fused (see Flag of Germany), and the Germans of Jewish religion and descent were deprived of citizenship, paving the way to the Holocaust.
Overview
The period from 1933 to 1937 was characterized by the systematic elimination of non-Nazi organizations that could potentially influence people, such as trade unions and political parties. Those critical of Hitler's agenda, especially his close ties with industry[citation needed], were suppressed, intimidated or murdered. The regime also assailed the influence of the churches, for example by instituting the Ministry of Ecclesiastical Affairs under Hanns Kerrl. Organizations that the administration could not eliminate, such as the education system, came under its direct control.
Specific measures
In a more specific sense, Gleichschaltung refers to the legal measures taken by the government during the first months following January 30, 1933, when Adolf Hitler became Chancellor of Germany. It was in this sense that the term was used by the Nazis themselves.
1. One day after the Reichstag fire on February 27, 1933, President of Germany Paul von Hindenburg, acting at Hitler's request and on the basis of the emergency powers in article 48 of the Weimar Constitution, issued the Reichstag Fire Decree. This decree suspended most human rights provided for by the constitution and thus allowed for the arrest of political adversaries, mostly Communists, and for general terrorizing by the SA, the Nazi paramilitary force, of other voters before the upcoming election.
2. In this atmosphere the Reichstag general election of March 5, 1933 took place. This election yielded only a slim majority for Hitler's coalition government and no majority for Hitler's own Nazi party.
3. When the newly elected Reichstag first convened on March 23, 1933, (not including the Communist delegates, since their party had already been banned by that time) it passed the Enabling Act (Ermächtigungsgesetz), transferring all legislative powers to the Nazi government and, in effect, abolishing the remainder of the Weimar constitution as a whole. Soon afterwards the government banned the Social Democratic Party, which had voted against the Act, while the other parties were intimidated into dissolving themselves rather than face arrests and concentration camp imprisonment.

HOUSTON — The space shuttle Columbia, flying at 18 times the speed of sound, disintegrated in a rumbling roar and incandescent flashes of light Saturday over East Texas, killing all seven of its astronauts and scattering chunks of metal and machinery across two states, only 16 minutes before its scheduled landing at Cape Canaveral, Fla.
It sounded like "rolling thunder," one witness said. Shock waves rattled homes and barns 39 miles below. Bright objects hurtled off the spacecraft, and the debris plummeted to Earth. Pieces were soaked with toxic fuel. Some were in flames and started several brush fires. Plumes of chalk-white smoke streaked across the blue sky, visible from Texas to Mississippi.
Officials warned people in East Texas and northwestern Louisiana not to touch the toxic debris. No injuries were reported on the ground. There was at least one report of human remains from the shuttle, recovered in Hemphill, Texas, near the Louisiana line. A hospital employee on his way to work told authorities he found body parts near some debris.

Against all odds, the astronauts aboard the space shuttle Columbia tried to gain control of their shattered and tumbling ship in the seconds before they lost consciousness and died.
A pilot punched buttons on a control panel and tried to restart systems as the vessel — its heat shield shattered — violently spun, pitched and rolled some 200,000 feet above Texas, a little north of the Dallas area.
The crew performed courageously, trying to problem-solve their way to safety. But the Feb. 1, 2003, accident was not survivable, NASA said Tuesday in a new report that reconstructed the crash second by second and suggested changes to protect future crews. Within moments the crew was unconscious.
The detailed analysis of the craft's breakup and free fall by NASA's Spacecraft Crew Survival Investigative Team offered a sobering reminder of the hazards of human spaceflight.
Rick Husband, William McCool, Mike Anderson, Kalpana Chawla, David Brown, Laurel Clark and Israeli astronaut Ilan Ramon succumbed to violent trauma as the crew compartment snapped away from the shuttle's body, and the life-sustaining oxygen inside rushed out through small but growing breaches in the walls above and below them.

Shuttle Columbia to land in Florida on Saturday

Columbia commander Rick Husband, pilot William McCool and flight engineer Kalpana Chawla tested the shuttle's re-entry systems today, setting the stage for landing Saturday to close out a 16-day science mission. Touchdown on runway 33 at the Kennedy Space Center currently is targeted for 9:15:50 a.m. EST.
Good weather is expected, with scattered clouds at 3,500 feet and 25,000 feet, winds out of 300 degrees at 10 knots gusting to 15 and visibility of seven miles. There are no predicted flight rule violations.
NASA does not plan to staff the shuttle's backup landing site at Edwards Air Force Base, Calif., for Saturday's landing attempt. Instead, Husband and company will have two opportunities on back-to-back orbits - 255 and 256 - to land in Florida. If they can't make it for any reason, they will remain in orbit an extra day and try again Sunday.
Entry flight director Leroy Cain says the shuttle Columbia sailed through morning entry tests with flying colors and that with good weather expected, the crew should have no problems returning to the Kennedy Space Center early Saturday.
"This has been a very successful mission," Cain said. "Fair to say it's far exceeded folks' expectations from a science standpoint. So we're very pleased.
"The vehicle Columbia and the crew are doing very well today," he continued. "It's been a quiet day with respect to science as we start to ramp down on most of those experiments and put them away. We spent most of our day today getting set up for entry.
"We did our normal flight control systems checkout. ... All the systems we use for entry, we had no problems, the vehicle performed flawlessly today as it has the entire mission."
The only issue - and Cain said it was not significant - is a bit of possible tile damage on Columbia's left wing. Video of launch shows what appears to be a piece of foam insulation from the shuttle's external tank falling away during ascent and hitting the left wing near its leading edge.
But Cain said engineers "took a very thorough look at the situation with the tile on the left wing and we have no concerns whatsoever. We haven't changed anything with respect to our trajectory design. It will be a nominal, standard trajectory."

Washington State Leads Nation in Seat Belt Usage; Gov. Locke Unveils New Holiday Traffic Safety Campaign
Gov. Gary Locke today announced that Washington state drivers lead the nation in seat belt usage. The governor also unveiled a new holiday traffic safety campaign targeting drunken drivers.
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Washington has the highest seat belt use rate in the country at 93 percent, up more than 12 percent since May 2002. The national seat belt use rate is 75 percent. This increase has resulted in 22 saved lives, according to Washington Traffic Safety Commission estimates. The number of traffic deaths from May 2002 through September was 289, compared with the previous 13-year average of 311 for that time period.
The increase in seat belt use is attributed to seat belt enforcement legislation signed by Locke and “Click it or Ticket,” a media and enforcement campaign managed by the Washington Traffic Safety Commission. The seat belt legislation, sponsored by Rep. John Lovick (D-Mill Creek), went into effect in June.
The “Click it or Ticket” campaign was a collaborative effort between the commission and local, regional and state law enforcement agencies. Before these recent state efforts, seat belt usage in Washington had been around 82 percent for six years running.
“Our highly successful seat belt campaign has saved two dozen lives and thousands of state and local taxpayer dollars,” Locke said. “We’re pleased that the public has responded to the stepped up enforcement and simple message that seat belts save lives.”
Building on the success of the “Click it or Ticket” campaign, Locke today unveiled a new holiday driver outreach program titled “Drive Hammered, Get Nailed.”

That must have been around Feb. 1992 when UFP took over the maintenance contract for First Federal from Kettermans. I "remember" that I moved to the Ketterman's office in Memphis and I was there for maybe 6 weeks and then I decided to quit Ketterman's and go to work for UFP doing the same job in Greenville that I had been doing for Ketterman's. Mark Howe was the contract manager and worked out of the Greenville office.

yeah.....and that letter from Maria Coleman that was dated 4/11/91. I wrote a while back about how that date was when the First Gulf War ended. What does that mean? She "learned so much more than I have ever learned before" or something like that. I remember that part from the letter because of a curious grammar structure in that sentence. She was the assistant to the President of First Federal Savings and Loan.

This guy in the uniform, I assume a midshipman, looks like the same guy. And that looks like my arm. In my memory, my sister was telling me in 1994, when I was home for class reunion, that my arms were much bigger. I had found a book with barbell exercise instructions and was pleased with the results. Not sure why I cared about it, I'm much more concerned with cardio conditioning than appearances.

I can’t find a lot about the Burroughs terminal and ATM’s There is plenty of the B-series computers, but not a lot on what I remember working on.
The ATM was the RT-750 model. It featured the same Logic Control Unit for data processing and communication as the bank tellers used in the bank offices. As part of the RT-750, the LCU was referred to as the “BMT.” Bobbilynn Michelle Townsend, an employee of the bank was impressed that I knew that acronym stood for “Burroughs Modular Terminal.” She asked me about it one day at the bank because she noticed it was the same as her initials. I forget the model number of the standalone LCU, it may have been EF-4600. There were also two different types of printers I worked on.

In law, especially criminal law, a motive is the cause that moves people to induce a certain action. Motive in itself is seldom an element of any given crime; however, the legal system typically allows motive to be proven in order to make plausible the accused's reasons for committing a crime, at least when those motives may be obscure or hard to identify with.
The law technically distinguishes between motive and intent. "Intent" in criminal law is synonymous with mens rea, which means no more than the specific mental purpose to perform a deed that is forbidden by a criminal statute, or the reckless disregard of whether the law will be violated.[citation needed] "Motive" describes instead the reasons in the accused's background and station in life that are supposed to have induced the crime.
Motive is particularly important in prosecutions for homicide. First, murder is so drastic a crime that most people recoil from the thought of being able to do it; proof of motive explains why the accused did so desperate an act.

In espionage, a honeypot, more often called a honeytrap, is a trap set to capture, kill or compromise a person, commonly but not necessarily an opposition agent, officer, or employee, using sex as the lure.
There are many ways in which the technique can be used to gain advantage. If the target is genuinely attached to the person who seduces him, information can be obtained over a long period — the target may trust his or her seducer enough to reveal secrets, or may even change his allegiance due to emotional attachment. Even if the target does not deliberately give information to his seducer, the seducer may accidentally be given opportunities to obtain it herself. A long-term relationship is not necessarily the goal, however — the technique can also be used to blackmail those who later regret their actions. Incriminating photographs can be an effective tool of coercion, for example. Sometimes, the technique is nothing more than a means of getting the target to lower his guard so that he may be captured or killed, or getting him to go to a location where this is more easily accomplished.

Some intelligence agencies, particularly in the Soviet bloc, are alleged to have agents (called "swallows") specially trained for this purpose. Not all traps are carried out by women, however; sometimes, women are ensnared by male agents, and sometimes same-sex traps are used. (The latter were particularly effective during times, or in countries, where homosexuality was taboo, and the very fact that an agent was homosexual was material suitable for blackmail.) Quite often, alcohol is involved, as any inhibitions the target will be reduced.

Having spent 10 years in prison for nationalist activities, Shack Twala is finally ordered released by the South African Supreme Court but he finds himself almost immediately on the run after a run-in with the police. Even though he's been kicked upstairs, crime keeps happening to newly appointed King County Sheriff Dave Reichert. The busy sheriff sighs and asks, "Why me?"
Last week's incident: On his way home from work, Reichert stopped in Kent for a haircut. Afterward, he was approached by a woman in her late 30s. She said, "I need help. I've run out of gas. I could use a dollar, and then I could get home."
Reichert pulled out a buck and offered to drive the woman to a nearby gas station. She said, "I don't ride with strangers." Reichert explained he was a law officer and would drive her in a police car.
The woman countered that she'd just flagged down a friend and he had offered her a ride.
Sounded odd, but Reichert shrugged and set off for his car. As he was getting behind the wheel, he glanced back and saw the woman had disappeared. Suddenly a car darted out with a man driving. Reichert followed.
The car pulled a U-turn. So did Reichert. Then Reichert saw a pair of eyeballs peering through the rear window.
It was the woman panhandler.
The sheriff kept following, eventually catching up with the couple at a gas station.
When Reichert accosted them, the woman warily asked, "Do you want your dollar back?"
"No," said Reichert. "I'd like to see your I.D." He called for a records check and made an interesting discovery. The guy was clean, but the woman had five outstanding warrants on theft and drug charges.
Reichert patted the woman down, discovering a roll of $1 bills. Within minutes, three other King County patrol cars arrived on the scene.
They had responded after hearing, via radio, that "Car One," the sheriff's car, was involved.
One of the assisting officers told the stunned suspect, "Lady, you've just been arrested by the sheriff."
Chances are the woman wishes she'd picked someone else - anyone else - to panhandle.
Just checking: Gov. Gary Locke's staff yesterday fielded a call to the governor from the White House. Caller was an aide to Hillary Rodham Clinton.
The First Lady had just learned about the governor's middle-of-the-night encounter with a bat. The April 3 incident occurred while the governor was changing his newborn daughter Emily's diaper.
Staffer Chris Thompson says, "The first lady wanted to express her concern." The Lockes are fine, but are receiving rabies shots.
