Rachel: Hi!

Phoebe: Hey listen let me ask you, do you believe in soul mates?

Rachel: Oh yes I do. I do. I believe that there is one perfect person out there for everyone. And do you know how you find him? You stop looking for him. That’s why I stopped looking for Russell Crowe. He’ll find me.

Subject: a world for him

It rained. The procession of weary soldiers became a bedraggled train, despondent and muttering, marching with churning effort in a trough of liquid brown mud under a low, wretched sky. Yet the youth smiled, for he saw that the world was a world for him, though many discovered it to be made of oaths and walking sticks. He had rid himself of the red sickness of battle. The sultry nightmare was in the past. He had been an animal blistered and sweating in the heat and pain of war. He turned now with a lover's thirst to images of tranquil skies, fresh meadows, cool brooks--an existence of soft and eternal peace.

Over the river a golden ray of sun came through the hosts of leaden rain clouds.

THE END.

Mr. Allen, Master: In all my years I've never seen the like. It has to be more than 100 sea miles and he brings us up on his tail. That's seamanship, Mr. Pullings. My God, that's seamanship.

Master And Commander

Three cheers for Lucky Jack!
(all) Huzzah! Huzzah! Huzzah!
She's ours, boys!
- (Aubrey laughs)
- (Pullings) Foul! You got away before me.
- Set royals and courses.
- Sir.
Have the idlers placed along the rails.
I've never seen the like.
It has to be more than sea miles
and he brings us up on his tail.
That's seamanship, Mr Pullings.
My God, that's seamanship.

This reference to the Great Salt Desert, the staging area for the rescue attempt, reminds me of that memory on the Taylor. There was a problem with the fresh water machines and we couldn't wash clothes for a while. As I was standing lookout on the bridge at least once a day, my clothes were filthy from evaporated salt water.

It is very interesting to consider this movie now with all new perceptions considered. I saw it just after I quit Microsoft and I was still living in Redmond. I wondered about it several times, as to the relevance of Russell Crowe’s character to my own life.

Master And Commander

You see, Will here, he seen her being built.
(Will) In Boston, sir. During the peace.
But she's Yankee-built, sir.
He was getting married, and his wife's
second cousin works in the yards,
so Will here saw the ship out of water.
Sir, I saw there was something right strange
about her, so I asked Joe...
So he described it to me
and I knocked you up a model, sir.
- And this framing is accurate?
- Exactly accurate, sir.
- Thank you, lads.
- Thank you, sir.
Killick, an extra ration of rum for these men.
Thank you very much, sir.
- Which I was saving for Salutin' Day.
- We'll drink wine.
Oh, drink wine on Salutin' Day...
Bluff above the water and sharp below.
Gives the hull a finer entry and a long run
as she goes aft. That's why she's so fast.
Heavier, but fast despite it.
That's the future.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - NASA successfully launched a three-year, $259 million mission to capture tiny samples of the solar wind, materials that will be returned to Earth to shed new light on how the planets formed and evolved.
With its launching on Wednesday, the saucer-shaped spacecraft began a million-mile journey toward the sun, to a realm where it can gather windborne solar particles unaltered by the Earth's magnetic field and atmosphere.

The tiny cache of solar particles would join the moon rocks gathered more than three decades ago by the Apollo astronauts and a Soviet robotic probe as the only extraterrestrial materials ever returned to Earth.

Here we go again.
Scrape-scrape, screech-screech.

Master And Commander

The simple fact is we were soundly beaten.
- Heavy frigate like that in the Pacific...
- Could tip the war in Napoleon's favour.
By comparison, the Surprise
is a somewhat aged man-of-war.
- Am I not correct?
- Would you call me an aged man of war?
The Surprise is not old.
No one would call her old.
She has a bluff bow, lovely lines.
She's a fine sea boat, weatherly, stiff and fast.
Very fast, if she's well-handled.
No, she's not old.
She's in her prime.

Planet of the Apes

And appearing for the state,|Dr Honorious, deputy minister ofjustice.
Bailiff. Your instructions:|To clean up the beast.
These rags he's wearing give off a stench|that's offensive to the dignity of this tribunal.
You may proceed, Dr Honorious.
By your leave, Mr President, this tribunal has|not yet defined the purpose for this inquiry.
You asked for the opportunity to present your|case. Surely you must know why you're here.
At the very least, this man has the right to|know whether there's a charge against him.
Objection. This exhibit is indeed a man.|Therefore he has no rights under ape law.
- Dr Zira, this is a man, is it not?|- He is unlike any man you have ever seen.
- As we hope to prove.|- Answer the question, Dr Zira. Is it a man?
Sir, perhaps the question is the point at issue.
Is he a man, is he a deviant,|or a freak of nature?
- Objection.|- Sustained.
Now, Dr Zira, in all fairness, you must admit|that the accused is a non-ape
and therefore has no rights under ape law.
Then why is he called the accused? Your|Honours must think him guilty of something.
The creature's not being tried.|He's being disposed of.
- It is scientific heresy that is being tried here.|- Well put, Dr Zaius.
Let us warn our friends that they endanger|their own careers by defending this animal.
Then I'll defend myself.
Dr Zira, would you tell...|Bright Eyes to be quiet?
- My name is Taylor.|- Bailiff. Silence the animal.
Wait. Let me...
You may proceed, Mr Prosecutor.
Learned judges, my case is simple.|It is based on our first article of faith.
That the almighty created the ape in his own|image. That he gave him a soul and a mind.
That he set him apart from the beasts of the|jungle and made him the lord of the planet.
These sacred truths are self-evident.
The proper study of apes is apes.
But certain young cynics|have chosen to study man.
Yes. Perverted scientists who advance|an insidious theory called evolution.
Come to the point, Dr Honorious.
The state charges that Dr Zira|and a corrupt surgeon named Galen
experimented on this wounded animal,|tampering with his brain and throat tissues,
to produce a speaking monster.
- That's a lie!|- Mind your tongue, madam.
Did we create his mind as well?
Not only can this man speak,|he can think. He can reason.
That can reason?
With the tribunal's permission, allow me|to expose this hoax by direct examination.
Proceed, doctor. But do not|turn this hearing into a farce.
Tell the court, Bright Eyes,|what is the second article of faith?
I know nothing of your culture. I admit that.
Of course he doesn't know our culture,|because he cannot think.
Tell us, why are all apes created equal?
Some apes, it seems,|are more equal than others.
Ridiculous.
Tell us, Bright Eyes,|why do men have no souls?
What is the proof that a divine spark|exists in the simian brain?
Read this for me.
Since the defendant has been forbidden|to speak in his own defence,
he requests that the following statement|be read into the record.
You read it, Dr Cornelius. Read it.
"I have come to you from a planet|in a different solar system."
- "I am an explorer in space"|- Stop right there. Let me see that paper.
It's a joke. In very poor taste.
- Is it a joke to seek the truth about this man?|- Dr Zira...
You state here that a ship from outer space|sank in an inland sea of our eastern desert
and that Bright Eyes had two intelligent|companions with him when he was captured.
That is his assertion.

HISTORY

THIS DAY IN HISTORY

World War II

Aug 10, 1945:

Japan accepts Potsdam terms, agrees to unconditional surrender

On this day in 1945, just a day after the bombing of Nagasaki, Japan submits its acquiescence to the Potsdam Conference terms of unconditional surrender, as President Harry S. Truman orders a halt to atomic bombing.

Emperor Hirohito, having remained aloof from the daily decisions of prosecuting the war, rubber-stamping the decisions of his War Council, including the decision to bomb Pearl Harbor, finally felt compelled to do more. At the behest of two Cabinet members, the emperor summoned and presided over a special meeting of the Council and implored them to consider accepting the terms of the Potsdam Conference, which meant unconditional surrender. "It seems obvious that the nation is no longer able to wage war, and its ability to defend its own shores is doubtful." The Council had been split over the surrender terms; half the members wanted assurances that the emperor would maintain his hereditary and traditional role in a postwar Japan before surrender could be considered. But in light of the bombing of Hiroshima on August 6, Nagasaki on August 9, and the Soviet invasion of Manchuria, as well as the emperor's own request that the Council "bear the unbearable," it was agreed: Japan would surrender.

Tokyo released a message to its ambassadors in Switzerland and Sweden, which was then passed on to the Allies. The message formally accepted the Potsdam Declaration but included the proviso that "said Declaration does not comprise any demand which prejudices the prerogatives of His Majesty as sovereign ruler." When the message reached Washington, President Truman, unwilling to inflict any more suffering on the Japanese people, especially on "all those kids," ordered a halt to atomic bombing, He also wanted to know whether the stipulation regarding "His Majesty" was a deal breaker. Negotiations between Washington and Tokyo ensued. Meanwhile, savage fighting continued between Japan and the Soviet Union in Manchuria.

I had the honour of serving with him.
At the Nile. A great victory.
You can find it in here, actually.

Yes.
May I beg you to tell me

U.S. blasts 5 Iranian targets

Houston Chronicle News Services

MON 04/18/1988 HOUSTON CHRONICLE

MANAMA, Bahrain - The U.S. Navy today destroyed two offshore Iranian oil platforms, sank a defending Iranian patrol boat and bombed two Iranian frigates. Iran attacked oil facilities off Sharjah and fired on at least two U.S. vessels.

The U.S. attack on the Persian Gulf oil platforms came in retaliation for a mine explosion that tore a hole in a U.S. frigate last week, injuring 10 crewmen.

One U.S. warship fired missiles at two approaching Iranian jet fighters, but the fighters reversed course; it was unclear whether they were hit, Carlucci said.

He said an Iranian patrol boat fired on the U.S. cruiser Wainwright, which took part in the attack on one of the platforms. The Wainwright was not hit.

Capt. Jack Aubrey: Do you see those two weevils doctor?

Dr. Stephen Maturin: I do.

Capt. Jack Aubrey: Which would you choose?

Dr. Stephen Maturin: [sighs annoyed] Neither; there is not a scrap a difference between them. They are the same species of Curculio.

Capt. Jack Aubrey: If you had to choose. If you were forced to make a choice. If there was no other response...

Dr. Stephen Maturin: [Exasperated] Well then if you are going to *push* me...

[the doctor studies the weevils briefly]

Dr. Stephen Maturin: ...I would choose the right hand weevil; it has... significant advantage in both length and breadth.

[the captain thumps his fist in the table]

Capt. Jack Aubrey: There, I have you! You're completely dished! Do you not know that in the service...

[pauses]

Capt. Jack Aubrey: ...one must always choose the lesser of two weevils.

[the officers burst out in laughter]

1LT Paul Wang: What are chigoes?

1LT Shane Vansen: They're like fleas. They burrow themselves into your skin.

1LT Paul Wang: Well, to me they looks more like praying mantis or a walking stick. We could call them walkers!

1LT Shane Vansen: Let's blow the hell out of the walkers?

1LT Paul Wang: Yeah.

No. Well, yes, but I couldn't catch one.
No, my greatest discovery

Indeed it was. I'm sorry you had to leave

In actual fact, Mr Blakeney and I

Is that right?
Let me guess. A stick?
Tell him about it, Mr Blakeney.

Frigate Apparently Strikes Gulf Mine; 10 Sailors Hurt

April 15, 1988|JOHN M. BRODER | Times Staff Writer

WASHINGTON — A U.S. warship apparently hit a mine Thursday, injuring 10 American sailors, after it had escorted a U.S.-registered Kuwaiti tanker through the Persian Gulf, Defense Department officials said.

One Pentagon source told the Associated Press that sailors aboard the Roberts had seen "mine-like" objects in the water shortly before the explosion.

U.S. officials in the past have accused the Iranians of sowing mines in the gulf to intimidate shipping headed for Iraq, with whom Iran has been at war for eight years. Last fall, U.S. warships and helicopters seized an Iranian ship in the act of planting mines.

White House spokesman Marlin Fitzwater said the National Security Council had "routinely informed" President Reagan of Thursday's explosion, adding that the incident "emphasizes once again our concern for stopping the Iran-Iraq War."

However, U.S. officials refused to discuss possible retaliation. "It's not a declaration of war," said one Administration official who spoke on condition of anonymity. "Besides, who are you going to retaliate against?"

The explosion took place as the frigate was sailing south on a routine patrol Thursday morning after completing a convoy that included the Kuwaiti tanker Gas King the night before, Howard said.

The frigate was heading toward Bahrain under auxiliary power Thursday night, escorted by the cruiser Wainwright, officials said.

All what?
Ifyou want to get acquainted, why don´t you just say so?
Acquainted?
You´d be amusing ifyou weren´t so pathetic!
Just a minute. I´m not fi nished with you yet.
At a distance, you´d almost pass for a man.
But you´re certainly a disappointment up close, aren´t you?
To your feet, ma´am. They´re almost as big as your mouth.
You know what you are?
Just trash.
A bottle ofwhiskey for courage and the manners ofa goat.
You´re the one who could use a lesson in manners.
Not from you, whiskey breath.

Capt. Jack Aubrey: Damn, he was good. Just came out of nowhere. Hit us with a full broadside, cut across our tail and took out our rudder. Damn fine gunnery. We only slipped away because of the fog. Quite fortunate, really. He may have had the weather gauge, but we had the weather gods.

Dr. Stephen Maturin: I have no idea what precisely it is you're talking about, but he did seem to come off rather well.

Capt. Jack Aubrey: Seven weeks sailing, and he happens in darkness on our exact position.

Dr. Stephen Maturin: Hm. Well, the French have their spies in England and elsewhere. As do we.

Capt. Jack Aubrey: Indeed. If he knew we were looking for him, he could have stood to sea and passed well clear.

Dr. Stephen Maturin: Well then, perhaps he was looking for us.
