Scope and Content Note
The Awards and Special Projects Branch was formerly the Administrative Liaison, Contingency of the Navy Fund, Personnel Awards, Honors and Ceremonies Branch (OP-09B2E). Prior to 1963 the branch was designated OP-09B23, and prior to 1959 was OP-211.
There are six series in this collection. Series I, Records Relating to Special and Annual Reports of the Chief of Naval Operations and the Secretary of the Navy, 1943-1970, contains reports submitted by OPNAV and EXOS organizations to assist in the preparation of the overall reports of the Chief of Naval Operations and the Secretary of the Navy, comments on drafts of these reports, and related correspondence and instructions.
In Series II are Records Relating to Interment of Unknowns of World War II and Korea at Arlington National Cemetery in 1958. These records contain a copy of the overall narrative report of the Chief of Naval Personnel to the Quartermaster General and its enclosures. Also in this series are planning material, correspondence, memoranda, and invitations, and a copy of the booklet Interment of the Unknowns: World War II and Korea prepared by the Commanding General of the Military District of Washington.
Series III, Records Relating to Awards for Specific Campaigns and Operations, 1952-1968, consists of correspondence, speed letters, and dispatches concerning recommendations for awards for Korea (1952-1957), Deep Freeze (1959-1962), Polaris Operations (1957-1962), Joint Task Force Eight (1962), Lebanon Operations (1958), Cuban Quarantine (1962-1963), Vietnam (1963-1968) and Gulf of Tonkin Operations (1964-1965).
Series IV, Records Relating to Awards to Individual Personnel, 1955-1968, contains correspondence, speed letters, and dispatches concerning recommendations and final letters on individual awards.
Series V consists of Miscellaneous Records Relating to Awards, 1919-1968. Included in this series are records of refusal of awards (1919-1920), the Report of the Adhoc Committee to Evaluate War Service of Amphibious Forces (1947-1948), Navy Unit Citation-Presidential Unit Citation Study No. 1, Distinguished Unit Citation (Army), Unit Awards, Presidential Unit Citation and Navy Unit Citation (prior to 1955), Flag Officers (1954-1962), and Navy Cross Awards, Odd Cases (1968).
Finally, Series VI holds Records Relating to Specific Personal Decorations, 1969-1973. These records consist of correspondence, speed letters, and dispatches concerning recommendations and final actions for the Legion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Navy Achievement Medal, and Navy Commendation Medal.

Jeremiah, a mysterious nomad searching for his missing father Devon and the fabled Valhalla Sector, has a brief yet mysterious encounter with Ezekiel, "The thunder will change you forever - but everyone you love will fall at the end of the world..." The suddenly vanishes before he can ask him any questions. He soon befriends Kurdy as he enters the outskirts of Clarefield, a small town governed by Theo who is searching for clues to the "the end of the world" a place of endless electricity and weaponry. However Theo soon suspects Jeremiah of hiding something and imprisons him. Whilst the pragmatic Kurdy formulates a plan to free Jeremiah. Simon, a fellow prisoner tells Jeremiah of thunder mountain, Cheyenne Mountain Military Complex, and that he was sent to investigate the possible return of the big death.

US engages in largest surface naval battle since WWII after months of heightened tensions from Iran-Iraq war.
On April 18, 1988, the United States engaged in its largest surface naval battle since World War II - with Iran. Four days earlier, US Navy guided missile frigate USS Samuel B. Roberts struck an Iranian naval mine in the Persian Gulf, blasting a 50-foot hole in its hull.
On the morning of April 18, US Marines and Navy Seals launched attacks on two Iranian oil platforms used by the Revolutionary Guards. The platforms were heavily damaged and made unusable. Shortly thereafter, the IRGC sent a missile boat to defend the platforms. The Joshan managed to fire off its solitary harpoon missile before being sunk by the American cruiser USS Wainwright.

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — A crippled United Airlines DC-10 crashed a half-mile short of a runway while trying to make an emergency landing Wednesday afternoon, bursting into a cartwheeling fireball that broke into what one eyewitness described as "15,000 pieces" and killing at least 123 of the 293 passengers and crew members on board.
Remarkably, as many as 166 persons survived the violent crash, according to Richard Vohs, a spokesman for Iowa Gov. Terry E. Branstad. The fate of four others was not immediately known.
Tail Engine Explodes
The plane's tail engine exploded before the crash but it was not immediately clear how the explosion contributed to what a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman called "complete hydraulic failure," an occurrence regarded as extremely rare in the wide-bodied DC-10, which has three independent hydraulic systems that operate all the plane's control surfaces on its wings and tail, and landing gear and brakes.
As rescuers worked underneath floodlights to remove bodies from the crash site, original estimates of the death toll--one as high as 190, which would have made the crash the second worst in U.S. history--were reduced.
"We don't have a firm count" of the dead, Vohs acknowledged at a press conference seven hours after the crash. "But right now, the number (of survivors) confirmed is 166."
The survivors of Wednesday's United Flight 232 from Denver to Philadelphia via Chicago included several dozen passengers who managed to walk out of a dark, smoke-filled, upside-down section of the jet after it broke off and came to rest in a tall cornfield off the runway.
"I walked out (through the back of the plane) and found myself in the cornfield," passenger David Landsberger told Cable News Network. "We were all walking around in shock. I just walked through it like it was a dream. I was a little dazed."
"It's the goddamndest thing I ever saw in my life," said Charles Mertz of Castle Rock, Colo., another of those who walked away.
Suitcases, paper, mail, clothes, chunks of burning metal and bodies were strewn over the inactive runway at Sioux Gateway Airport, where the plane crashed after desperately circling for a half-hour.
One hundred ambulances, fire trucks and helicopters from as far away as South Dakota plucked out the victims. The search for bodies was difficult because some of them were scattered in the cornfield. Many of the survivors were listed in critical condition with burns or broken bones.
United Airlines declined to comment on the number of survivors or to release the names of the 282 passengers and 11 crew members.

Officials warned people in East Texas and northwestern Louisiana not to touch the toxic debris. No injuries were reported on the ground. There was at least one report of human remains from the shuttle, recovered in Hemphill, Texas, near the Louisiana line. A hospital employee on his way to work told authorities he found body parts near some debris.

I remember well that day 2/1/2002. I was riding my bicycle from Bellevue, Washington, along the regular route I followed to the office I worked at in the Microsoft building in Issaquah, Washington. I was crossing a small bridge next to the Costco building in Issaquah and within sight of the Microsoft building when my bicycle literally flipped end-over-end and I went face first into the concrete sidewalk. I was left sprawled out on my back on the sidewalk among the wooded area of that bridge and dazed for a few minutes. I got up after a few minutes and rode my bicycle the remaining mile or so to the office and noticed a short time later that I had a black eye forming from where my left eye brow seemed to have hit the concrete just before my helmet absorbed the rest of the impact which was painful in itself to my head. I would later think that someone had caused that accident to happen and that it was something similar to that scene in the 1963 film "The Great Escape" where Steve McQueen stretches the thin wire across the road to knock the German soldier off his motorcycle.

Against all odds, the astronauts aboard the space shuttle Columbia tried to gain control of their shattered and tumbling ship in the seconds before they lost consciousness and died.
A pilot punched buttons on a control panel and tried to restart systems as the vessel — its heat shield shattered — violently spun, pitched and rolled some 200,000 feet above Texas, a little north of the Dallas area.
The crew performed courageously, trying to problem-solve their way to safety. But the Feb. 1, 2003, accident was not survivable, NASA said Tuesday in a new report that reconstructed the crash second by second and suggested changes to protect future crews. Within moments the crew was unconscious.
The detailed analysis of the craft's breakup and free fall by NASA's Spacecraft Crew Survival Investigative Team offered a sobering reminder of the hazards of human spaceflight.
Rick Husband, William McCool, Mike Anderson, Kalpana Chawla, David Brown, Laurel Clark and Israeli astronaut Ilan Ramon succumbed to violent trauma as the crew compartment snapped away from the shuttle's body, and the life-sustaining oxygen inside rushed out through small but growing breaches in the walls above and below them.

HOUSTON — The space shuttle Columbia, flying at 18 times the speed of sound, disintegrated in a rumbling roar and incandescent flashes of light Saturday over East Texas, killing all seven of its astronauts and scattering chunks of metal and machinery across two states, only 16 minutes before its scheduled landing at Cape Canaveral, Fla.
It sounded like "rolling thunder," one witness said. Shock waves rattled homes and barns 39 miles below. Bright objects hurtled off the spacecraft, and the debris plummeted to Earth. Pieces were soaked with toxic fuel. Some were in flames and started several brush fires. Plumes of chalk-white smoke streaked across the blue sky, visible from Texas to Mississippi.
Officials warned people in East Texas and northwestern Louisiana not to touch the toxic debris. No injuries were reported on the ground. There was at least one report of human remains from the shuttle, recovered in Hemphill, Texas, near the Louisiana line. A hospital employee on his way to work told authorities he found body parts near some debris.

Supposed to have a vodka martini, shaken not stirred, now, but the movies never showed the hero going to bed to get sleep, did they? But who wants to get laid right after killing somebody? That was worth an ironic chuckle, and he lay back on top of the covers. Bond. James Bond. Sure. As soon as he closed his eyes, he saw again the sight picture from the bank, and relived the moment, bringing his MP-10 to bear, lining up the sights on whoever the hell it was - Guttenach was his name, wasn't it? He realized he hadn't checked. Seeing the head right there in the ringed sight, and squeezing off the burst as routinely as zipping his pants after taking a leak. Puff puff puff. That fast, that quiet with the suppresser on the gun, and zap, whoever the hell he was, was dead as yesterday's fish. He and his three friends hadn't had much of a chance - in fact, they'd had no chance at all.
But the guy they'd murdered earlier hadn't had a chance, either, Chavez reminded himself. Some poor unlucky bastard who'd happened to be in the bank, making a deposit, or talking to a loan officer, or maybe just getting change for a haircut. Save your sympathy for that one, Ding told himself. And the doctor Model had been ready to kill was now in his home, probably, with his wife and family, probably half-wasted on booze, or maybe a sedative, probably going through a really bad case of the shakes, probably thinking about spending some time with a shrink friend to help get him through the delayed stress. Probably feeling pretty fucking awful. They all snored, to the point that when all were asleep it sounded like an old steam-powered railroad yard in there.
Choo-choo, Killgore thought, looking back down at his last bit of paperwork. Ten more minutes, and he could head home. Too late to put his kids to bed. Too bad. Well, in due course they would awaken to a new day and a new world, and wouldn't that be some present to give them, however heavy and nasty the price for it might be. Lost Romanov bones 'identified'
Russian scientists have said they may have identified the missing remains of two of Tsar Nicholas II's children, who were executed after the revolution.
Experts said it was "highly probable" the remains found near Yekaterinburg in July were Alexei, the heir to the throne, and Maria, his elder sister.
They were missing when most of the family's remains were found in 1991.
The tsar, his wife and five children were shot dead by a Bolshevik firing squad in Yekaterinburg on 17 July 1918.

A Naval Flight Officer (NFO) is an officer in the United States Navy or United States Marine Corps that specializes in airborne weapons and sensor systems. NFOs are not pilots (Naval Aviators) per se, but they may perform many "co-pilot" functions, depending on the type of aircraft.
NFOs in the Navy are unrestricted line officers, eligible for command at sea and ashore in the naval aviation communities. They are also eligible to hold senior flag rank positions, including command of carrier strike groups, joint task forces, numbered fleets, naval component commands and unified combatant commands. Similarly, Marine Corps NFOs are also eligible for command at sea and ashore within Marine Aviation, and are also eligible to hold senior general officer positions, such as command of Marine Aircraft Wings, Joint Task Forces, Marine Expeditionary Forces, Marine Corps component command and unified combatant commands.
The counterpart to the NFO in the United States Air Force is the Combat Systems Officer (CSO), encompassing the previous roles of Navigator, Weapons Systems Officer and Electronic Warfare Officer. Although NFOs in the Navy's E-2 Hawkeye aircraft perform functions similar to the USAF Air Battle Manager, their NFO training track is more aligned with that of USAF Combat Systems Officers.

The Reich Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda (German: Reichsministerium für Volksaufklärung und Propaganda or Propagandaministerium) was Nazi Germany's ministry that enforced Nazi Party ideology in Germany and regulated its culture and society. Founded on March 13, 1933, by Adolf Hitler's new National Socialist government, the Ministry was headed by Dr. Joseph Goebbels and was responsible for controlling the press and culture of Nazi Germany.
Speeches were also used to great effect by the German Government. Goebbels commented on Hitler's first speech as Chancellor: "It will have great propaganda value...be used and viewed in cinemas for years to come...what an achievement."
Just before Hitler delivered this speech Goebbels introduced him and used the opportunity to highlight the importance of propaganda. "It seems you cannot have a good government without good propaganda, but then, you can't have good propaganda without a good government. However, you cannot lie! We must never lie!
