Germany and Italy have announced they are at war with the United States. America immediately responded by declaring war on the two Axis powers.

Three days ago, US President Franklin Roosevelt announced America was at war with Japan, the third Axis power, following the surprise attack on its naval base at Pearl Harbor.

Today Italian dictator, Benito Mussolini, made his declaration first - from the balcony over the Piazza Venezia in Rome - pledging the "powers of the pact of steel" were determined to win.

Then Adolf Hitler made his announcement at the Reichstag in Berlin saying he had tried to avoid direct conflict with the US but, under the Tripartite Agreement signed on 27 September 1940, Germany was obliged to join with Italy to defend its ally Japan.

"After victory has been achieved," he said. "Germany, Italy and Japan will continue in closest co-operation with a view to establishing a new and just order."

He accused President Roosevelt of waging a campaign against Germany since 1937, blamed him for the outbreak of war in 1939 and said he was planning to invade Germany in 1943.

Over in Washington, President Roosevelt told Congress the free world must act quickly and decisively against the enemy.

[When I just read something Bill Clinton read about not wanting to "pile on" to Cheney's shooting incident, I remembered this. The day I went back to Microsoft to ask for my job back, he was at this Costco, which I could see from the window at my cube. I thought that was quite the coincidence, and I hoped it was a good sign, albeit something extraordinary that defied my logic. I remember now too that it was on the other side of the street from that Costco where I went face first into the concrete after my bike slipped on a slick bridge. I had a black eye for a week. I still remember the date for some reason: Feb 1, 2002. I think I remembered it because I had another accident on Dec. 23, 2001, when I was biking around Lake Washington. At the 30 mile point of that 60 mile trip, I hit a patch of ice and went down hard and fast. One minute I was riding along, the next minute I was looking at my feet as I went sliding across the road. Damn that hurt. I dislocated my shoulder because my elbow hit first or right about the same time as my knee. I could barely raise my arm if at all for weeks after that. It was pretty uncomfortable riding the remaining 30 miles back home. And the whole way there and for a time afterwards, I could almost hear something, it was unusal, the way you can feel like there is something on your tongue as that saying goes, but with this, I could almost hear a "thud" sound for a while after, the sound of me hitting the ground.

Only remember a brief part of my dreams last night. It feels like there was more dreaming but I can only remember what seems like the last part. This felt like a normal dream and not one that was what I consider "suggested" or "manipulated." This recent dream was of me sitting in a room with three other guys. We were all wearing U.S. Navy uniforms and it seemed to be some kind of waiting room. I was enroute to a new assignment, a ship somewhere. One of the guys seemed to be a CPO, another was a LT. The third guy was a buddy of mine from the Wainwright, except that the uniform he was wearing was only similar to a U.S. Navy uniform but really wasn't. I walked out of the room with someone that I don't think was one of the first group. I was walking down some stairs.

My sleep pattern has changed over the past few days since I haven't experienced one of the foreign dreams. I am sleeping later. For the first time in a long time, I didn't get up to watch the 5 a.m. news, which is a bummer, but in all reality is a silly thing to feel bad about anyway.

Then I put the transmission in Drive and pressed the accelerator, but all the wheels did was spin and I kept moving fast backwards, I felt frustrated. There was some other stuff going on, possibly it was dream manipulation to respond to my metaphor about being in an H-bomb experiment. But the recurring theme has something to do with traveling backwards and not being able to stop where I want to. It actually reminds me of controlling a ship, in that it takes time and space to stop one.

I was thinking this morning or last night about all that commotion in the Ironman community a few years ago about people racing under other people's name. That would seem to tie in with my theory about Tom Warren and Tom Watson. They are probably real people, but I think they know I was there. Not exactly clear on this, but it means something. I suspect that people were all talking about something along these lines and that produced the buzz about the "phantom" competitors.

This morning, after I left the VA, I started thinking about this memory I have of Florida in 1984 and its possible symbolism to reality. It was shortly after I got out of boot camp. I rented a Mustang convertible and took a trip to Daytona Beach.

Then I looked closer at the DD-214 and wondered about the details. I was most interested in the “Military Education” section, which is box 14. I was wondering why the 19 weeks of “C” school was turned in to 91 weeks. Then I started wondering if there is a date in there somewhere. That is also the period I am associating with being captive and then missing in Africa. The form has the following information in it:

I noticed a date could be formed from the course duration numbers and that yielded: 12/23/91. I can’t think of anything special about that date. I do remember though that on 12/23/01 was the date of that first bicycle crash I had where I separated my shoulder. As for that specific date, I can’t remember anything particular. I am pretty sure that on 12/25/91, though, I was over at Tracie’s house to meet her parents.

In the summer of 2004 as I was slowly going crazy in the hotel room I started firing off email messages to a group of people in congress and the mainstream media that I guess just was just a random collection of people and probably based on me reading their names in the news sometime prior. I remember even sending an email to Hillary Clinton, as well as an "I am not a terrorist" email to George Bush. So anyway, to make a long story short the only response I got back, that I now recall, was an email, automated perhaps, I don't recall, from one of the congressmen from the State of Hawaii. That might have been from US Senator Daniel Inouye but I do not now recall that specific detail.

I just realized it must have been March 3rd when I moved into that Crosslands hotel out in Spokane Valley back in 2004 after quitting Microsoft. I remember it snowed heavily that day which corresponds to this weather archive. I would have said that I moved in there on the second at the latest, but I guess it could have been the third. I remember one of the receptionists made a comment about how it had started snowing as soon as I came in and I wondered about that comment. I was going crazy in that place after a while, but in retrospect, I would much rather be back there than here, without a doubt. Damn I miss having a car, to just be able to get out and drive around at night. The bastards were following me everywhere but at least I could have something to do in trying to shake them off. I hate it here and having to be around these people beyond tolerance.

I wonder if my wife grew up in the Philippine Islands, or this has something to do with me having my home in Hawaii during my youth, or both. It is probably why Microsoft-Corbis had Danny Florentin working with me. He told me he was originally from the Philippines but was living in Hawaii when Microsoft hired him. I was working closely with him because I was transitioning all my Microsoft Premier Support for Enterprise accounts to him as I moved into a new role in Microsoft Premier Support for Developers. I wrote a while back that he was a nice guy with a nice family. I remember I was sitting at a table during an office Christmas party with all them and at one point, a curious expression came over his wife’s face when she was looking at me and I wonder if she saw my feelings of depression on my face as I don‘t think I was talking at the time and I was just sitting there. We had common friends so I wondered if they had been discussing why I seemed depressed. I made a comment later that night to a co-worker that I had spent so much time in the North Atlantic, my offspring were going to be Eskimos. I puzzled over why I said that. I do “remember” being in the North Atlantic and the Artic Circle with the USS Wainwright CG-28, but we were up there for a couple weeks at most.

Tired

My thoughts don't feel as organized today. Very tired. Most of all, I hate having to write about this stuff in this blog. I hate it more than anything. The real problem though is that this blog feels no more public than my private email accounts. In other words, for a long time, for much too long, it felt like my private email account was a public blog. I could write about this stuff by sending it to myself in an email or I could write about it here in this blog. And there is no difference in terms of privacy. If you can read it here, you can read it in my private email. I don't know who is doing it, but I am convinced that someone is intercepting my private email and disclosing it to unknown people. It made me feel like my landlord was unlocking my apartment when I wasn't there and then gossiping with people about my private life, such as how I don't make my bed in the morning. For years, I have been living with absolutely no private life. It is exhausting.

This reminds about how it seemed no one ever understood what happened in the Persian Gulf. At least I don't think about that as much nowadays, so I got that going for me. With all this going on, and no one understanding what it is doing to me, and with a world that respects no privacy other than their own, at least I don't think about the Persian Gulf as much anymore. Lucky me.

I wrote earlier about my game to shake off the people following me. I found it somewhat humorous but slightly annoying when I saw a car commercial with a real celebrity (reminds me of Shelley's Among the stars that have a different birth by virtue of them knowing why people are following them) racing away from paparazzi while he is also taking pictures of them with his camera. I believe they were doing that because I had written about that in my journal and they read what I wrote, not to mention those commercials came out after I launched my efforts to take pictures of the people following me. Maybe they are supporting me with something like that or maybe they are just standing on my shoulders. And so after I just wrote that sentence, I realized that doing things like that have absolutely no support value to me, rather they are indeed putting more weight on my shoulders.

For that excruiating year I spent in that homeless shelter in Pioneer Square in downtown Seattle, I used to go to two places to get away from that craziness for a while even though all the psycho zombies from outside that homeless shelter still follow me everywhere I go, as they have been for years and still do to this very minute. For example, some nearby restaraunt offered to provide Thanksgiving dinner for us last year and we all walked over there to eat. The guy, who was apparently the owner made some kind of explanation why he was providing dinner for us at that time even though it was the first time or the first time in a while. At some point, I felt his hand on my shoulder and he seemed to be leaning down and I was convinced that someone had just taken our picture and he was posing for it. People have been doing that around me for years and I was baffled by it. There was a Seattle P-I photographer in there but he wasn't in front of me at the time, although he usually had his camera pointing right at me. Now I understand why. Anyway, the one place I went to a lot was a place near 3rd and Thomas, which I didn't realize that was the street address until a few weeks ago. Another place I used to go to a lot, walking from that homeless shelter, was a Starbucks on Seneca Street within sight of the downtown Library. If that Starbucks had been on the other corner of that same block, it would have been on 3rd and Seneca and I probably would have been going in there all that time. As it was, Seneca and 4th was the closest I could get to Seneca and 3rd.

Naval Flight Officer


A Naval Flight Officer (NFO) is an officer in the United States Navy or United States Marine Corps that specializes in airborne weapons and sensor systems. NFOs are not pilots (Naval Aviators) per se, but they may perform many "co-pilot" functions, depending on the type of aircraft.


NFOs in the Navy are unrestricted line officers, eligible for command at sea and ashore in the naval aviation communities. They are also eligible to hold senior flag rank positions, including command of carrier strike groups, joint task forces, numbered fleets, naval component commands and unified combatant commands. Similarly, Marine Corps NFOs are also eligible for command at sea and ashore within Marine Aviation, and are also eligible to hold senior general officer positions, such as command of Marine Aircraft Wings, Joint Task Forces, Marine Expeditionary Forces, Marine Corps component command and unified combatant commands.


The counterpart to the NFO in the United States Air Force is the Combat Systems Officer (CSO), encompassing the previous roles of Navigator, Weapons Systems Officer and Electronic Warfare Officer. Although NFOs in the Navy's E-2 Hawkeye aircraft perform functions similar to the USAF Air Battle Manager, their NFO training track is more aligned with that of USAF Combat Systems Officers.

I thought a lot about this photo of the USS Taylor FFG-50 after I saw it. Especially because of the perspective of the photographer compared to my own artificial and symbolic memories. The USS Taylor FFG-50 is the first U.S. Navy ship I was assigned to in my artificial and symbolic memories. That camera perspective was also relevant to an experience when I was onboard this ship, which I have written about several times. The date on the photo was about a month after I quit Microsoft and moved out to Spokane Valley, WA. I was staying at a hotel named Crosslands at the time. I remember a woman at the counter at the hotel was talking to someone on the phone and she mentioned that people sometime call that hotel the “Crossroads.”

After I left Redmond Washington in February 2004 and moved to Spokane Valley, look at your maps if you want to know how to get there, I was living at a long-term hotel where I planned to stay until I found other employment and then I was going to rent an apartment. Just about every day I saw a chief petty officer in a khaki United States Navy uniform pass by my window. I guess they had him in the unit next door to mine. I saw him often enough that I identified the chief petty officer insignia on the shirt collar of his uniform.

They certainly went to great lengths to discredit me. I mean, am I not discredited even to this very day?

But hey, let's give the Devil some credit where credit is due. I was never a chief petty officer of the United States Navy.

Between 1990 and 1993 contiguously I was a chief warrant officer of the United States Marine Corps.

My return in 1998 was different though. I returned but I am a composite version of Tom Reagan and Kerry Burgess. I am not as tall as Tom Reagan and I am as tall as Kerry Burgess but I do not have the physical scars of Kerry Burgess, such as the gunshot wound scar he had on his shoulder.

I sure do miss being in that kind of physical condition. I only completed that race course with about forty minutes to spare and I walked most of the running course but still that is a tremendous amount of distance to cover in seventeen hours. Just swimming for 2.4 miles is quite an accomplishment. Especially considering that I hardly even trained for that part. I was swimming in a 25 yard pool but I wasn't training very hard at it. I would swim 25 yards down to the other end and then I would rest for a while, much more time that I spent swimming that 25 yards, and then I would swim down 25 yards and then rest for a while. I also did not kick my feet during that 2.4 mile swim course. That was all covered by the strength of my shoulders and arms. I forget now the time it took me to cover that 2.4 miles swim distance. 100 minutes? I don't recall. I wasn't in any real danger of not completing the swim course before the cut off time but I also wasn't speeding my way through it. I don't recall for certain but I think I finished in last place for the swim course for my age group for those of us that completed the swim course. I don't think you can really appreciate how far 2.4 miles is until you try to swim that distance.

I wonder if I created that dialog in the 1996 "Independence Day" about how "Hiller" would not get to fly the space shuttle if he married a stipper because I was planning to launch my final mission to date on 2/11/1997. But the dialog I think is about Kerry Burgess and how he was going to marry a woman who worked as a stripper. I had a consistent and extensive line of thought recently that the woman is Lindsay Dawn Mackenzie but then I looked her age and she seems too young. I was thinking later that as Thomas Reagan, I was introducing Kerry Burgess to women that my talent agency represents and Mackenzie was one of the women he was dating. I have no idea why this all contradicts my memory.

But then, yes, I do understand: I don't have the true memory of Kerry Burgess because I am not Kerry Burgess. I am living the life of a version of Kerry Burgess that I constructed from his real life and from a cover story I created for him. It is no different than these other people I write about, just that Kerry Burgess did not have a public persona.

She is from Britain, too, I vaguely recall reading a long time ago. That would make sense that I would set up Kerry Burgess with her around the time of the 1994 "Princess Caraboo" and especially important the film "Timecop" that premiered the same day and with his wife's confusion about why he looked older than he should. I also recall that Mackenzie started off as a "Page 2" girl which is something about a newspaper in Britain that has a photo at different times of a woman with her bare chest exposed and so that makes even more sense.

England -- Playing The Palace: Royal Open House Has Begun

LONDON - Like many of her noble subjects, Britain's Queen Elizabeth II is bowing this summer to the sometimes cruel realities of modern economics.

Over the years, most of the stately homes in Britain have admitted the paying public to help finance upkeep. The list includes parts of Windsor Castle and the Princess of Wales' ancestral estate, Althorp House.

But never - until now - has the world's most famous royal residence and headquarters of the British monarchy been opened for public tours.

For eight weeks (beginning yesterday), however, that all is changing as Buckingham Palace hosts an anticipated 450,000 visitors willing to pay an adult admission of $12 for a peek at 18 of the more than 600 rooms in the palace.

The queen's motive for inviting the public to view the sumptuous staterooms of Buckingham Palace is a variation on the one that has opened all those other stately homes: She hopes to help pay for restoration of Windsor Castle, which was badly damaged in a fire last November.

The decision is being widely applauded here as giving her subjects a chance to see their monarchical heritage up close. And the anticipated lineup for the 7,000 tickets to be sold daily is already being referred to as "the mother of all queues."

"It's going to be the No. 1 attraction," said Isabel Coy, an official with the British Tourist Authority. "It's our living heritage. The real Royal Family runs a business from there. It's only open for a limited time, so there's a sort of exclusive cachet."

WASHINGTON - Growing up in segregated times, Charles "A-Train" Dryden never thought he would fly warplanes for the U.S. military, much less win an award for doing so.

But there he was in the Capitol on Thursday, sitting at the feet of Abraham Lincoln's statue, being honored alongside other Tuskegee Airmen for defending an America that hardly honored the black aviators when they came home from World War II.

"For all the unreturned salutes and unforgivable indignities ... I salute you for your service to the United States of America," President Bush said as he bestowed the Congressional Gold Medal.

War-era MGM had a lovely, luminous star in the making with Susan Peters. She possessed a creative talent and innate sensitivity that would surely have reigned as a leading Hollywood player for years to come had not a tragic and cruel twist of fate taken everything away from her.


Then tragedy struck a little more than a year after her wedding day. While on a 1945 New Year's Day duck-hunting trip in the San Diego area with her husband and friends, one of the hunting rifles accidentally discharged when Susan went to retrieve it. The bullet lodged in her spine. Permanently paralyzed from the waist down


Suffering from acute depression and plagued by kidney problems and pneumonia, she finally lost her will to live and died at the age of 31 on October 23, 1952, of kidney failure and starvation, prompted by a developing eating disorder (anorexia nervosa).

"Six Months Ago" is the tenth episode of the first season of the NBC science fiction drama series Heroes. The entire episode is set six months before the series' premiere, displaying how all the characters initially developed their powers.


Nathan and Heidi discuss Peter's career choice while driving home in their convertible, when a black SUV speeds up from behind and tries to run them off the highway. Nathan struggles to maintain control of the car, but suddenly finds himself floating out of the driver's seat, leaving Heidi alone in the car. Nathan floats in the air, unable to help as he watches the car crashes into barrels at an exit ramp, then falling to the ground far from the crash.

As Peter wakes up from a dream about what had just happened to Nathan and Heidi, the phone rings. Peter meets Nathan at the hospital where Nathan explains that Heidi has been in surgery for 10 hours. Peter then asks him about the "other car" that was involved. When Nathan asks how Peter knew about the other car, he explains that he saw it in a dream he was having. Nathan explains that the guys in the other car were Mr. Linderman's and that Mr. Linderman must have learned about the plan to prosecute him. Nathan asks Peter to do the deposition if he agrees to take the case; Peter agrees. A doctor pulls Nathan aside to explain his wife's condition, but Nathan is displeased with the doctor's news.

NATHAN: We're usually in our pajamas around the breakfast table. You can't blame us for cleaning up for the Journal.

OLIVER DENNISON: Not when the hollandaise is made fresh.

(Heidi moves her wheelchair to be with the boys.)

OLIVER DENNISON: You seem to be adjusting well.

HEIDI PETRELLI: To the wheelchair? You can say it, Mr. Dennison. I lost my right to be sensitive when I married Nathan. I'm not saying I didn't have my darker moments during rehabilitation. I was angry for a long time.

OLIVER DENNISON: At your husband?

(Everyone’s quiet.)

The 2007 United States Air Force nuclear weapons incident occurred at Minot Air Force Base and Barksdale Air Force Base on August 29–30, 2007. Six AGM-129 ACM cruise missiles, each loaded with a W80-1 variable yield nuclear warhead, were mistakenly loaded on a United States Air Force (USAF) B-52H heavy bomber at Minot and transported to Barksdale. The nuclear warheads in the missiles were supposed to have been removed before taking the missiles from their storage bunker. The missiles with the nuclear warheads were not reported missing and remained mounted to the aircraft at both Minot and Barksdale for a period of 36 hours. During this period, the warheads were not protected by the various mandatory security precautions required for nuclear weapons.

The incident was reported to the top levels of the United States military and referred to by observers as a Bent Spear incident, which indicates a nuclear weapon incident that is of significant concern but does not involve the immediate threat of nuclear war. The USAF has yet to officially classify the incident.


Response by the U.S. government

The USAF and Department of Defense at first decided to conceal the incident, in part because of the USAF policy not to comment on the storage or movement of nuclear weapons and an apparent belief that the incident would not generate much public concern. In fact, the initial DoD incident report contained the statement, "No press interest anticipated." Details of the incident were then leaked by unknown DoD officials to the Military Times newspaper, which published a small article about the incident on September 5, 2007.

I keep having these curious sensations that seem to be of me landing on the ground, and I assume I am strapped to a parachute because I can't see the parachute. I'm not certain how long I have been consciously aware of that sensation. In these sensations, I am almost, but partially, visualizing myself looking down at my legs as I am about to hit the ground. I can distinquish the color of the ground and some basic details about the texture of the ground. I can see the black military boots and I am wearing and what seems to be a green flight pressure suit that fighter jet pilots would wear. I see the image clearly in my mind, but I find it confusing because I don't consciously remember any such experience so I can only describe it as something I partially visualize, which seems curious itself. I used to describe such sensations as 'foreign dream,' because they seemed to have been produced by sources outside my mind, although this particular sensation about landing on the ground with a parachute while wearing a flight suit occurred to me after I had been awake for a while. Such waking images have probably been occurring to me for a long time but only the similar dreams would stay within my attention span for some reason.

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia - The missile cruiser USS Princeton, badly damaged by a mine in the northern Persian Gulf, has been pulled out of action and sent to a gulf port for assessment, U.S. military officials said today.


Discussing the mine blasts that damaged the U.S. warships, he said what was apparently an unusually sophisticated mine damaged the rudder and rudder shaft of the billion-dollar Princeton. The blast injured three crewmen and lifted the vessel party out of the water.

The USS Tripoli, meanwhile, remained on duty after patching a 16-by-20-foot hole in its hull blown by a cruder mine 2 1/2 hours earlier and 10 miles away.

Neal said no minesweepers had cleared the area where the explosions occurred because it was believed to have been relatively free of mines. He said the allies would "continue an aggressive countermine campaign."

The two explosions appeared to jeopardize any plans for an amphibious landing by the Marine task force positioned off the Kuwait coast - at least in the area where the ships were operating.

The Tripoli, an 18,000-ton helicopter assault carrier, is serving as flagship for a newly mounted mine-clearing operation in the area. The 2-year-old Princeton had been on anti-aircraft surveillance duty.

There were varying reports on the extent of damage to the 570-foot Princeton.

Military officials, speaking on condition of anonymity, said there was one report that the hull was damaged in the middle, with cracks in the superstructure above the main deck.

They did not say to which gulf port the Princeton had headed for repairs.

A dozen mine sweepers from the U.S., Saudi and European navies are at work to clear out the thousands of mines the Iraqis are believed to have sown in coastal waters to deter any landing by the 15,000 Marines stationed aboard about 30 ships in the gulf.

The Marines are prepared to strike at Kuwaiti beaches by helicopter and assault boat as part of the anticipated ground offensive.

U.S. officials, however, were worried by the explosions, especially because the Princeton appeared to have been damaged by a so-called "influence mine" - a device the Iraqis were known to possess but had never before used.

THE PRESIDENT: Mrs. Boorda, Mike's family, Secretary Christopher and our friends from the Diplomatic Corps, Secretary Perry, Secretary Dalton, General Shalikashvili, members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Unified Commanders-in-Chief, the leadership and members of Congress who are here, Admiral Johnson and the flag leadership of our Navy, Master Chief Petty Officer of the Navy Hagan; to our great Navy sailors and all of America's Armed Forces:

Today we come to honor and give thanks for the life of Mike Boorda, a special man who earned a special place in the heart of his Navy and the heart of our nation. He lived a life that makes America proud, beginning, of course, with his family. His first words upon becoming Chief of Naval Operations were, "I wouldn't be here if it wasn't for Bettie, and I wouldn't want to be here without her."

To Bettie and David and Edward and Robert and Anna, your families, I know there is nothing we can say or do to ease the loss of your husband and father and grandfather. I hope you find comfort in the love and respect and honor that surrounds you today, here in this great cathedral and all throughout our great land.

I thank you for your service to the Navy. I thank you, Bettie. I thank you, Edward and Robert, for your service. I thank you, David, for your work on the radio. I thank you, Anna, for your devotion and for your husband's service; and, Edward, for your wife's service. But your entire family is a model, a reflection of Mike Boorda's remarkable love for the Navy -- a Navy in which he enlisted when he was just 16.

When he was first in his class at personnelman school in San Diego, he was offered his choice of assignments. Displaying his characteristic compassion, he traded the slot with a friend whose wife was sick and expecting a baby. So the friend got to stay in San Diego and Mike got shipped to Oklahoma. Oklahoma's coastline leaves something to be desired for people designing a career in the Navy. But it turned out to be a first-rate assignment because that's where he met Bettie.

He was commissioned an officer in 1962. Then his star rose fast and bright, with important assignments, from weapons officer aboard destroyers to Chief of Naval Personnel, to Commander-in-Chief of our Naval forces in Europe, and CINC of the Southern Command. And as all of you know, two years ago just last month, he became the very first enlisted man in the entire history of the United States Navy to be the Chief of Naval Operations.

WASHINGTON - The Navy's top admiral died in an apparent suicide Thursday just before a news magazine was preparing to question him about whether he was wearing combat decorations to which he was not entitled, Pentagon officials said.

Adm. Jeremy Michael Boorda, chief of naval operations apparently shot himself in the chest at his home at the Washington Navy Yard, using a .38-caliber pistol that belonged to his son-in-law, according to Pentagon officials. He was pronounced dead on arrival at District of Columbia General Hospital.

But Navy officials said Thursday that they still were not certain that the admiral's death was related to the medals issue. Two notes were found at Boorda's residence; they were sealed by investigating police.

However, the Washington Post reported in today's editions that the notes, one of which was written to Boorda's wife, expressed concern about the disgrace resulting from an impending disclosure questioning whether he had earned that two Vietnam-era decorations he had once worn. He had wrongly thought he was entitled to them, he said, but worried that some would never see his action as an honest mistake. The New York Times said the notes suggested Boorda had been driven to take his life by fear that the reputation of the Navy, already battered by a series of scandals, would be further harmed by the disclosures about his medals.


Pentagon officials said that Boorda had worn the Combat V until about a year ago and then took it off, but they were unable to explain the change. They said that the interview initially had been scheduled for 1 p.m., but scheduling problems forced Boorda to postpone it to 2:30 p.m.

Rear Adm. Kendell Pease, who was with Boorda shortly before the shooting, said that when he told Boorda about the subject of the interview, the admiral abruptly announced that he was going home for lunch instead of eating the meal that had been brought to his office.

The Navy said today that it had no plans to make public the two suicide notes left by Adm. Jeremy M. Boorda, the Chief of Naval Operations, who shot himself last week after questions were raised about the legitimacy of two Vietnam War combat decorations that he had worn.

Defense Department officials said that Admiral Boorda's wife and children considered the letters to be family property and had decided to keep them private, even though one was addressed not to the family but to "the sailors."

The Navy is not prepared to release the notes at this time," said Rear Adm. Kendell Pease, the Navy's chief spokesman. "We just don't feel it's appropriate." Asked whether the family had made the decision not to release the letters, the admiral said he had no comment.

Admiral Boorda, the Navy's highest-ranking officer, shot himself in the chest outside his Washington home on May 16, shortly after being told that Newsweek magazine had requested an interview with him to ask about two tiny "V" pins that he had worn on his ribbons until last year. The pins signify combat experience; his war service was on ships off the coast of Vietnam.

Navy officials have said that while Admiral Boorda might have been embarrassed by publicity over the medals, they still found it difficult to believe that the issue by itself would have been enough to lead him to suicide. Many had hoped that the letters would be made public to help end the speculation about the cause of Admiral Boorda's death.

Defense Department officials said one of the notes was a love letter to his wife, Bettie, and would probably never be made public.

The other, typewritten letter, they said, was addressed to "the sailors" and outlined Admiral Boorda's fear that the dispute over the medals would further damage the reputation of the Navy after a series of scandals in recent years.

WASHINGTON - The Navy's top admiral died in an apparent suicide Thursday just before a news magazine was preparing to question him about whether he was wearing combat decorations to which he was not entitled, Pentagon officials said.


Rear Adm. Kendell Pease, who was with Boorda shortly before the shooting, said that when he told Boorda about the subject of the interview, the admiral abruptly announced that he was going home for lunch instead of eating the meal that had been brought to his office.

President nominates 35th commandant of the Marine Corps

ARLINGTON, Va. — President Barack Obama announced his nomination July 20 for Gen. James F. Amos to be appointed 35th commandant of the Marine Corps.

The announcement came after Amos, currently the Corps’ second in command, was recommended for the position by Secretary of the Navy Ray Mabus and Defense Secretary Robert Gates.

If confirmed by Congress, Amos will be the first career aviator to lead the Corps and would become the first assistant commandant in several decades to succeed his immediate boss.

Amos brings a sense of renewed enthusiasm to the amphibious mission of the Marine Corps.

In a statement to the Naval War College in June 2010, Amos said he is “more convinced than ever before that a balanced Navy-Marine Corps team, one that is capable of promptly, effectively and efficiently conducting operations throughout the entire range of military operations, is critical to the continued prosperity of our nation and is essential to the survival of our friends, allies and partners.”

Amos has held command at numerous levels most notably with the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing in support of Operation Iraq Freedom I and II from 2002-2004. He has also served as the commanding general of Marine Corps Combat Development Command and as the deputy commandant of Combat Development and Integration from 2006 – 2008. Amos was appointed to his present rank and assigned as assistant commandant of the Marine Corps in 2008.

Amos will be ushered in as commandant at a pivotal time as the Marine Corps tries to refocus its efforts as an amphibious force in readiness after eight years of fighting in a landlocked region.

Gen. James T. Conway is scheduled to retire in September.

Alex and Michael





I woke up this morning and I guess I had just then been dreaming about a story I was writing about those two. I was feeling as though the details were something I had been thinking of before I awoke. I awoke thinking about how if there were ever in this world two little kids that needed firearms then those are the two. I thought about how little Alex had an Uzi and he opened up on Susan Smith with that Uzi and he ripped a full clip at her and that stupid kid only hit the cat nearby on the floor which exploded into a big splatter of blood and hair over the wall and he got Susan in the foot with one bullet from that full magazine but that isn't surprising because 15-month-old kids can't aim firearms very well and Michael was banging away at her with a pair of Colt .45 semiautomatic pistols and he emptied both clips and only got her in the leg one time. So I don't know what I was dreaming of. Maybe that was something from part of something I wrote a long time ago after I found those kids in the lake.
