Paranoia

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Paranoia (adjective: paranoid) is a thought process believed to be heavily influenced by anxiety or fear, often to the point of irrationality and delusion. Paranoid thinking typically includes persecutory beliefs, or beliefs of conspiracy concerning a perceived threat towards oneself. (e.g. "Everyone is out to get me.") Making false accusations and the general distrust of others also frequently accompany paranoia. For example, an incident most people would view as an accident or coincidence, a paranoid person might believe was intentional.

Yawn.

You girl scouts in the Seattle office are the most pathetic bunch so far that are stupid enough to interfere with my dangerous occupation of being an active duty U.S. Navy SEAL.

Maybe you should look for work as stewardesses.

The Twilight Zone Season 1 Episode 3

Mr. Denton on Doomsday

(Opening Narration)

Narrator: Portrait of a town drunk named Al Denton. This is a man who's begun his dying early - a long, agonizing route through a maze of bottles. Al Denton, who would probably give an arm or a leg or a part of his soul to have another chance, to be able to rise up and shake the dirt from his body and the bad dreams that infest his consciousness. In the parlance of the times, this is a peddler, a rather fanciful-looking little man in a black frock coat. And this is the third principal character of our story. Its function: perhaps to give Mr. Al Denton his second chance.

"This seems to work," Steve said quietly.

"How many strands fit inside?" Maggie asked.

"Anywhere from three to ten."

"And how large is the overall package?"

"Six microns. Would you believe it? The packaging is white in color, so it reflects light pretty well, especially UV radiation, and in a water-spray environment, it's just about invisible." The individual capsules couldn't be seen with the naked eye, and only barely with an optical microscope. Better still, their weight was such that they'd float in air about the same as dust particles, as readily breathable as secondhand smoke in a singles bar. Once in the body, the coating would dissolve, and allow release of the Shiva strands into the lungs or the upper GI, where they could go to work.

"Water soluble?" Maggie asked.

"Slowly, but faster if there's anything biologically active in the water, like the trace hydrochloric acid in saliva, for example. Wow, we could have really made money from the Iraqis with this one, kiddo - or anybody, who wants to play bio-war in the real world."

Their company had invented the technology, working on an NIH grant designed to develop an easier way than needles to deliver vaccines. Needles required semiskilled use. The new technique used electrophoresis to wrap insignificantly tiny quantities of protective gel around even smaller amounts of airborne bioactive agents. That would allow people to ingest vaccines with a simple drink rather than the more commonly used method of inoculation. If they ever fielded a working AIDS vaccine, this would be the method of choice for administering it in Africa where countries lacked the infrastructure to do much of anything. Steve had just proven that the same technology could be used to deliver active virus with the same degree of safety and reliability. Or almost proven it.

"How do we proof-test it?" Maggie asked.

It was in 2001 that Star Trek: Enterprise debuted and I was there in Charlotte on a business trip. I remember telling the people I was there with that I wanted to watch it that night. That was several days after 9/11 I believe. I seem to recall some manager looking annoyed with me because I told them I wasn't afraid of flying. I also felt annoyed around that time, and I think another coworker was thinking the same thing, about the people that were selected to attend the Professional Developers Conference in L.A. My suspicion was that we were getting to go because the higher-leveled people didn't want to travel because they were scared. Anyway, I took note that Enterprise started off in Broken Bow, OK, a location I knew well. I realized later that Broken Bow is precisely half-way between Antlers, OK, and Ashdown, AR, which is where I was born and where I graduated high school, respectively.

Also, a later episode, when I lived in Kent, reminded me of that day as I was walking into a Renton Starbucks when I realized someone had just tried to hit me with their car and I suspected it was being video recorded.

Jesus I must be dreaming.

You know, if you embrace my theories the way I do then I am actually not surprised there are NOT overt signs of cornfields in this film, I think to myself writing this sentence as I have the DVD paused to make this note. Then just before I was about to make this post I thought back to the scene of "Angel" caressing the statue of Jesus Christ in the church, and I barely recall that brief scene but I recall the smirk on her face and I think again about how seriously annoyed I was with the mannequins I kept seeing but my real-life companion in that world did not see mannequins but actual mechanized beings and they told her to not tell me they were mechanized and I did not know about that until she told me about it in the real world.

I mean sure, I think now remembering what I had wrote earlier in my blog about the cornfield. I was on that flight, while everyone else had ducked and covered and I was still sitting up so I could maintain custody of the prisoner, then everything went kind of fuzzy for a second, even more so, and then the quietness was staggering. I have written about that before, that sense in my mind of sudden quietness, and that was me sitting precisely as I had been on the airplane and there was nothing around me but tall stalks of corn and I was still sitting in the same airplane seat but I was all alone in that cornfield and it was suddenly blaring and maddenly blaring quietness. It drives me crazy now just trying to thing again about that.

And try to watch them all the way through without stopping to make any relevant statements about those racketeering productions. I mean, why should I even bother anymore? They believe it. Why should I care what they're trying to get away with.

I cannot recall when I last watched that 1986 film "Highlander," or even the first time I watched it, although I might have seen it when it premiered but that is just a guess, but I can still recall that scene where he, or at least I guess I can recall it correctly, where he is on the bottom of the lake and he is chopping down the long stalks of the water plants on the bottom of the lake with his sword. I thought of that before, well maybe not the context of "Highlander," but there was always something creepy to me about seeing those similar water plants at the bottom of the lake in Coeur d'Alene when I was swimming the 2.4 mile course for that Ironman triathlon they have out there every year since 2003.

Jet Carrying 293 Crashes, Burns in Iowa; 166 Survive

July 20, 1989|J. MICHAEL KENNEDY and BOB BAKER | Times Staff Writers

SIOUX CITY, Iowa — A crippled United Airlines DC-10 crashed a half-mile short of a runway while trying to make an emergency landing Wednesday afternoon, bursting into a cartwheeling fireball that broke into what one eyewitness described as "15,000 pieces" and killing at least 123 of the 293 passengers and crew members on board.

Remarkably, as many as 166 persons survived the violent crash, according to Richard Vohs, a spokesman for Iowa Gov. Terry E. Branstad. The fate of four others was not immediately known.

Tail Engine Explodes

The plane's tail engine exploded before the crash but it was not immediately clear how the explosion contributed to what a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman called "complete hydraulic failure," an occurrence regarded as extremely rare in the wide-bodied DC-10, which has three independent hydraulic systems that operate all the plane's control surfaces on its wings and tail, and landing gear and brakes.

As rescuers worked underneath floodlights to remove bodies from the crash site, original estimates of the death toll--one as high as 190, which would have made the crash the second worst in U.S. history--were reduced.

"We don't have a firm count" of the dead, Vohs acknowledged at a press conference seven hours after the crash. "But right now, the number (of survivors) confirmed is 166."

The survivors of Wednesday's United Flight 232 from Denver to Philadelphia via Chicago included several dozen passengers who managed to walk out of a dark, smoke-filled, upside-down section of the jet after it broke off and came to rest in a tall cornfield off the runway.

"I walked out (through the back of the plane) and found myself in the cornfield," passenger David Landsberger told Cable News Network. "We were all walking around in shock. I just walked through it like it was a dream. I was a little dazed."

"It's the goddamndest thing I ever saw in my life," said Charles Mertz of Castle Rock, Colo., another of those who walked away.

Suitcases, paper, mail, clothes, chunks of burning metal and bodies were strewn over the inactive runway at Sioux Gateway Airport, where the plane crashed after desperately circling for a half-hour.

One hundred ambulances, fire trucks and helicopters from as far away as South Dakota plucked out the victims. The search for bodies was difficult because some of them were scattered in the cornfield. Many of the survivors were listed in critical condition with burns or broken bones.

United Airlines declined to comment on the number of survivors or to release the names of the 282 passengers and 11 crew members.

Exactly, and the best place to start is to recreate the key protein in the serum and work our way up from there. If we can avoid having to re-engineer it from a natural source and make an entirely synthetic version, it should ultimately increase the efficiency.

PERNA
His name was Farrol Mylan. Before he died in the last culling, he was one of our most celebrated medical researchers. He was the one who found it.

BECKETT
Found what?

PERNA
The key. His journals tell of one man who survived an encounter with the Wraith. Farrol and his team discovered that this man possessed a unique protein, one that enabled him to resist the chemical released by the Wraith to precipitate draining of life from their victims. After painstaking trial and error—

BECKETT
Farrol made a copy of the protein.

PERNA
He was eventually able to create a prototype of a drug designed to interfere with the Wraith feeding process.

BECKETT
And it worked?

PERNA
Farrol was killed before the drug could be used to defend Hoff.

BECKETT
And it's been your job to make certain his work wasn't in vain. Quite the responsibility.

PERNA
It is a great honor.

BECKETT
How do you know for certain that this Farrol…wasn't just embellishing his results, or for that matter, making them up? I mean, all you have to go on are his notes.

PERNA
He and his team worked until the last possible moment. They knew the Wraith ships were overhead, and still they worked through the night, hoping to provide one more insight, one last thread of knowledge. Not for themselves, but for the generation that would survive. Ten thousand soldiers gave their lives to give them those last few hours. The last words of Farrol's journal are known to all Hoffans.

BECKETT
I meant no disrespect, Perna.

PERNA
It's all right. More than just his journals survived the culling. His research materials were safeguarded as well, including carefully preserved Wraith cell samples which we still use in our work today. Please. See for yourself.

[She shows him to a microscope with a slide next to it. He puts the slide under the lens and looks through it reluctantly.]

BECKETT
Whoa. That's incredible…

Spooky. At least it is to me, I guess. I looked through a window a few days ago and I thought to myself that it reminded me, in terms of the layout of the ground, of that dream I wrote about. I wrote of how I saw a very bright flash on the wall of my apartment through the window which was followed by another very bright light. I looked through the window and I could see a small hill directly outside my window that had green grass on it

I pondered over that dream for a while because I wondered about that broken telephone. I wondered why the broken electrical leads were so clear to me in that dream. I cannot remember what happened to the telephone but it was an old style, or so it seemed because of details I cannot remember, although I am not certain it was a rotary dial, but I remember something about how I was talking on it to someone named Tom and I think it fell off the wall or perhaps a table and it broke into several pieces. I was looking down at it on the floor and I noted the two electrical leads that were exposed and I wondered why I noted that in the dream. The phone still seemed to work though and I could hear the other person talking but I don't think the conversation was of any real consequence.

At some point, I looked outside the window of the house and along with other observations during what seemed to be the end of the dream, I saw green grass on a small rise of the ground of the yard.

Rainbow Six

Colonel Wilson Gearing was in his hotel room only a few floors above the Rainbow troops. His large bags were in the closet, and his clothing hung. The maids and other staff who serviced his room hadn't touched anything, merely checked the closet and proceeded to make up the beds and scrub the bathroom. They hadn't checked inside the bags-Gearing had telltales on them to make sure of that-inside one of which was a plastic canister with "Chlorine" painted on it. It was outwardly identical with the one on the fogging system at the Olympic stadium it had, in fact, been purchased from the same company that had installed the fogging system, cleaned out and refilled with the nano-capsules. He also had the tools he Needed to swap one out, and had practiced the skill in Kansas, where an identical installation was to be found. I le could close his eyes and see himself doing it, time and again, to keep the downtime for the fogging system to a minimum. He thought about the contents of the container. Never had so much potential death been so tightly contained. Far more so than in a nuclear device, because unlike one of those, the danger here could replicate it, many times instead of merely detonating once. The way the fogging system worked, it would take about thirty minutes for the nanocapsules to get into the entire fogging system. Both computer models and actual mechanical tests proved that the capsules would get everywhere the pipes, and spray out the fogging nozzles, invisible in the gentle, cooling mist. People walking through the tunnels leading to the stadium proper and in the concourse would breathe it in, an average of two hundred or so nano-capsules in four minutes of breathing, and that was well above the calculated mean lethal dose. The capsules would enter through the lungs, be transported into the blood, and there the capsules would dissolve, releasing the Shiva. The engineered virus strands would travel in the bloodstream of the spectators and the athletes, soon find the liver and kidneys, the organs for which they had the greatest affinity, and begin the slow process of multiplication. All this had been established at Binghamton Lab on the 'normal' test subjects. Then it was just a matter of weeks until the Shiva had multiplied enough to do its work. Along the way, people would pass on the Shiva through kisses and sexual contact, through coughs and sneezes. This, to had been proven at the Binghamton Lab. Starting in about four weeks, people would think themselves mildly ill. Some would see their personal physicians, and be diagnosed as flu victims, told to take aspirin, drink fluids, and rest in front of the TV. They would do this, and feel better-because seeing a doctor usually did that to people-for a day or so. But they would not be getting better. Sooner or later, they'd develop the internal bleeds that Shiva ultimately caused, and then, about five weeks after the initial release of the nano-capsules, some doctor would run an antibody test and be aghast to learn that something like the famous and feared Ebola fever was back. A good epidemiology program might identify the Sydney Olympics as the focal center, but tens of thousands people would have come and gone. This was a perfect avenue for distributing Shiva, something the Project's senior members had determined years before-even before the attempted plague launched by Iran against America, which had predictably failed because the virus hadn't been the right one, and the method of delivery too haphazard. No, this plan was perfection itself. Every nation on earth sent athletes and judges to the Olympic games, and all of them would walk through the cooling fog in this hot stadium, lingering there to shed excess body heat, breathe deeply, and relax in this cool place. Then they'd all return to their homes, from America to Argentina, from Russia to Rwanda, there to spread the Shiva and start the initial panic.

Then came Phase Two. Horizon Corporation would manufacture and distribute the "A" vaccine, turn it out III thousand-liter lots, and send it all over the world by express flights to nations whose public-health-service physicians and nurses would be sure to inject every citizen they could find. Phase Two would finish the job begun with the global panic that was sure to result from Phase One. Four to six weeks after being injected, the "A" recipients would start to become ill. So, three weeks from today, Gearing thought, plus six weeks or so, plus two weeks, plus another six, plus a final two. A total of nineteen weeks, not even half a year, not even a full baseball season, and well over ninety-nine percent of the people on the earth would be dead. And the planet would be saved. No more slaughtering of sheep from a chemical-weapons release. No more extinction of species by thoughtless man. The ozone hole would soon heal itself. Nature would flourish once more. And he'd be there to see it, to enjoy and appreciate it all, along with his friends and colleagues in the Project. They'd save the planet and raise their children to respect it, love it, cherish it. The world would again be green and beautiful.

Tom Clancy

Rainbow Six

Baker wondered if he should visit the bathroom to wash his hands after that conversation. He'd been briefed into Rainbow and its recent activities, and while he admired the military way of doing things-like many FBI agents, he'd been a Marine officer, recruited right out of the Quantico Marine Base into the Bureau-it differed in several important areas from the Bureau's way of doing things… like not violating the law. This John Clark was a hardcase son of a bitch, a former Agency guy who'd done some spooky things, Dan Murray had told him, with a mixture of admiration and disapproval. But, what the hell, they were on the same side, sort of, and this Russian subject had probably initiated an operation that had gone after Clark's own family. That added a personal element to the case, and Baker had to respect that.

Chavez turned in after another long day of watching athletes run and sweat. It had been an interesting couple of weeks, and though he sorely missed Patsy and JC, whom he'd hardly had a chance to meet, he couldn't deny that he was enjoying himself. But soon it would be over. Sports reporters were tallying up the medals America had done quite well, and the Aussies had done spectacularly well, especially in swimming events-in anticipation of announcing which nation had "won" the games. Three more days and they'd run the Marathon, traditionally the last Olympic event, followed soon thereafter by the closing ceremonies and the dousing of the flame. Already the runners were walking and/or driving along the course, to learn the hills and turns. They didn't want to get lost, though that would hardly be possible, as the route would be lined with screaming fans every step of the way. And they were working out, running in the training/practice area of the Olympic Village, not so much so as to tire themselves out, but just enough to keep their muscles and lungs ready for the murderous exertion of this longest of footraces. Chavez considered himself to be in shape, but he'd never run a twenty-plus-mile course. Soldiers had to know how to run, but not that far, and running that distance on paved roads had to be pure murder on the feet and ankles, despite the cushioned soles of modern running shoes. Yeah, those bastards had to be in real shape, Ding thought, lying down in his bed.

From the opening-day ceremonies, when the Olympic flame had been lit, through today, the games had been wonderfully managed and run, as if the entire national soul and strength of Australia had been devoted to one task-as America had once decided to go to the moon. Everything was superbly organized, and that was further proof that his presence here was a total waste of time. Security hadn't had even a hint of a problem. The Aussie cops were friendly, competent, and numerous, and the Australian SAS backing them up were nearly as good as his own troopers, well supported and advised by the Global Security people who'd gotten them the same tactical radios that Rainbow used. That company looked like a good vendor to use, and he thought he might recommend that John talk to them along those lines. It never hurt to have an outside opinion.

About the only bad news was the weather, which had been sultry-hot for the entire Olympiad. That had kept the medics busy at their heatstroke kiosks. Nobody had died yet, but about a hundred people had been hospitalized, and thirty times that many treated and released by the firemen paramedics and Australian army medical orderlies. That didn't count the people who just sat down on the curb and tried to cool off without getting any proper medical assistance. He didn't mind the heat all that much-Chavez had never been afraid of sweat-but he also paced himself, and, like everyone else in the Olympic stadium, was grateful for that fogging system. The TV guys had even done a story about it, which was good news for the American company that had designed and installed it. They were even talking about a version for golf courses in Texas and elsewhere, where it got about this hot. Traveling from ninety-five degrees to an apparent temperature of eighty or so was a pleasant sensation indeed, not unlike a shower, and the concourses were often crowded with people in the afternoons, escaping from the blazing sunshine.

"This is the day, Carol," John Brightling told his ex-wife. "Less than ten hours from now, the Project starts."

She dropped Jiggs on the floor and came to embrace him. "Oh, John!"

"I know," he told her. "It's been a long time. Couldn't have done it without you."

Henriksen was there, too. "Okay, I talked with Wil Gearing twenty minutes ago. He'll be hooking up the Shiva dispenser right before they start the closing ceremonies. The weather is working for us, too. It's going to be another hot one in Sydney, temperature's supposed to hit ninety-seven degrees. So,people'll be camping out under the foggers."

"And breathing heavily," Dr. John Brightling confirmed. That was another of the body's methods for shedding excess heat.

Chavez was in the stadium now, already sweating from the building heat and wondering if any of the marathon runners would fall over dead from this day's race. So Global Security, with whose personnel he'd interfaced briefly, was part of the mission. He wondered if he could remember all the faces he'd seen in the two brief conferences he'd had, but for now he had to find Colonel Wilkerson. Five minutes later, in the security-reaction hut, he found the man.

"G'day, Major Chavez."

"Hey, Frank. I got a question for you."

"What's that, Ding?"

"The fogging system. Where's it come from?"

"The pumping room's by Section Five, just left of the ramp."

"How do I get in there?"

"You get a key to the door and the alarm code from me. Why, old boy?"

Elegy

Three astronauts land on what looks like Earth 200 years before they left--only all of the people seem frozen in time.

AIRED: 2/19/60

Elegy (The Twilight Zone)

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

"Elegy" is an episode of the American television anthology series The Twilight Zone.

Running out of fuel, astronauts Meyers, Webber, and Kirby land their spaceship on a remote asteroid. They find the place quite Earth-like with buildings and people, but walk around and begin to wonder where everyone is. The first place they come to is a farm. The astronauts look around, and find no one. No one, that is, until they see the farmer, with his back to the astronauts, gazing off into the distance. They approach him, tap him on the shoulder and try talking to him, then they realize he is nothing more than a statue.

The men later come across a town hall in which a mayor is being elected, surrounded by people and a band playing. They can hear the music playing, but everyone is stock-still. A beauty pageant is where they find themselves next, where there are several beauty queens being judged on the stage, and lots of people in the audience, but everyone is still as if they were frozen in time. As they exit that room, a person in the audience suddenly moves.

The astronauts look for some time, and grow more and more disturbed by their surroundings as they find that everyone is holding still creepily. Finally, they are startled to find someone who does move: Wickwire, the caretaker of this place. Wickwire explains to the astronauts that the asteroid they have landed on is an exclusive cemetery founded in 1973 where rich people can live their greatest wish in life after they die. He is told that a nuclear war destroyed much of the Earth in 1985, and that it has taken over two hundred years to recover from it (this happens to be the year 2185). Wickwire serves the three men wine and asks what their greatest wish is. All three reply that they wish they were on their ship heading for home. Suddenly, they realize that their drinks have been poisoned. As the men die, Wickwire (who is actually a robot that has been off for 200 years and only turns on when he's needed, such as to dust) apologizes, saying that he needs to ensure the peaceful tranquility of the cemetery because men are incapable of peace.

The Twilight Zone Season 1 Episode 20

Elegy

Quotes

Kirby: I told you not to trust him, I told you!

Meyers: We meant you no harm!

Wickwire: I realize that, and I'm sorry. Truly I am.

Webber: Give us... the antidote!

Wickwire: There is no antidote, captain. Even though the eternifying fluid is coursing through your veins, it won't be painful, I assure you.

Meyers:But why...why us?

Wickwire: Because you are here, and because you are men. And while there are men, there can be no peace.

SHEPPARD
Well, we know damn well what the long-term effects of Wraith culling are, right?

WEIR
We're talking about putting a human being in the same room as a starving Wraith, and once we start down that road—

SHEPPARD
Which road did you think we were headed down?

WEIR
Not this one. At least not this fast.

SHEPPARD
Having spent time with the prisoner, I don't pity him. He's going to die anyway. This drug could be useful some day.

WEIR
Some day?

SHEPPARD
The point is, we don't get a lot of opportunities like this. Do you know how obsessed with this the Hoffans are? When they found out we had a live Wraith prisoner…
(insistent)
He's going to die. I've tried to feed him all sorts of live stuff, but apparently, there's only one item on his menu.

WEIR
And what about the test subject? If the drug fails—

SHEPPARD
We're not just grabbing anybody off the street. The test subject is a terminally ill patient who has volunteered himself.

BECKETT
This isn't about making mistakes, Perna. It's about the end justifying the means, and in our profession, that's a very slippery slope. We have no idea if this will work. We could be sacrificing that man to a monster.

PERNA
There will be another to take his place.

BECKETT
That's just what I'm afraid of.

INT—ATLANTIS BRIG

[Teyla arrives where Sheppard and Ford are waiting outside the cage containing the Wraith.]

TEYLA
They are ready.

[Sheppard approaches the cage.]

FORD
Careful, sir.

[Beckett, Perna, and Merell approach. The Wraith sees them.]

WRAITH
This is the sustenance you promised?

SHEPPARD
A little change in plans. You tell me something right now…or the dinner party's canceled.

WRAITH
What do you want to know?

SHEPPARD
How many hive ships have become operational since we awakened the first one?

WRAITH
All of them, Major Sheppard. First, they will travel their own feeding grounds and gather strength. We are a patient race, Major. When we have taken our fill and gathered our strength, we will join force and come for you.

SHEPPARD
You have any idea when that will be—morning, afternoon?

[The Wraith scoffs.]

SHEPPARD
(to guards)
Open it up.

BECKETT
You don't have to do this.

MERELL
I know. I'm ready.

[The Wraith takes a deep breath. Merell enters the cage and unbuttons his shirt to expose his chest to the Wraith. The Wraith approaches.]

WRAITH
He is weak.

[The Wraith tries to feed on Merell, but it doesn't work. After a moment he withdraws his feeding hand, leaving bloody marks on Merell's chest but no sign of aging. The Wraith turns his back to everyone in disappointment. Perna is stunned.]

EXT—HOFFAN CITY, DAY

INT—HOFFAN CONFERENCE ROOM

[Druhin pours white wine for himself, Beckett and Perna.]

DRUHIN
You are both heroes of the Hoffan people.

BECKETT
I'll admit, it was amazing.

DRUHIN
I hope your friends will join us for a celebratory banquet to honor your work.

BECKETT
They'd be glad to attend, but don't you think celebrations are a bit premature?

DRUHIN
The results speak for themselves. I intend to ask the council to approve mass production of the serum, effective immediately. After what happened today, I doubt they will offer any resistance.

PERNA
That is wonderful news, Chancellor.

BECKETT
With all due respect, no, it isn't. We're talking about one test here. Now, I'm as pleased as anyone with the results, but we still have a lot of work to do before we can start using it.

PERNA
Dr. Beckett wishes to run a full series of tests on Merell prior to issuing his final report.

BECKETT
There may have been mitigating circumstances. The man was dying, for one.

DRUHIN
Of course. I'll bring it up with council. To success…

[They clink their glasses in a toast.]

INT—ATLANTIS BRIG

[Sheppard and Teyla arrive.]

SHEPPARD
What is it?

FORD
It's Steve. He doesn't look so good.

[The Wraith is unable to stand and is groaning in distress.]

TEYLA
How long has he been like this?

FORD
Since the test.

SHEPPARD
Think it's a ruse?

TEYLA
It is not their way.

[Ford shakes his head. The Wraith pulls himself to his feet by the bars.]

SHEPPARD
Hey.

WRAITH
What have you done to me?

[The Wraith runs at Sheppard, pushing his arm through the bars. Sheppard steps back. The Wraith falls to the floor, gasping.]

SHEPPARD
We need Beckett in here.

FORD
(to guards)
Go.

[The Wraith lies panting.]

SHEPPARD
We're going to help you.

WRAITH
Don't feel pity for me. You will suffer far worse when the others come for you.

[The Wraith gasps and dies.]

INT—HOFFAN RESEARCH LAB

[The dead Wraith is lying on a metal table. Sheppard has joined Beckett.]

BECKETT
Major, I was just about to cut him open.

SHEPPARD
Then I was just leaving.

BECKETT
I've already done a series of tests you might like to know the results of.

SHEPPARD
You know what killed him?

BECKETT
I'm going to go out on a limb here, and say that it was all of his vital organs shutting down almost simultaneously.

SHEPPARD
Did he starve to death?

BECKETT
No. Based on the condition his body's in, I don't think he died from a lack of nourishment.

SHEPPARD
Well, then what was it?

BECKETT
Initial tests revealed a significant amount of Hoffan serum in his blood stream. I'm guessing we'll find similar trace amounts in each of his organs once we analyze those as well.

SHEPPARD
Why did the Hoffan drug end up in his blood?

BECKETT
From the Hoffan's research, we know that when the Wraith feed, they release a chemical into their victims' bodies. What it actually does, we don't yet understand, but I can only assume that it prepares the human body in some way to be drained of life. The serum is designed to shield the victim from that initial chemical release, blocking it.

SHEPPARD
Okay.

BECKETT
I think the serum protein may have mutated, when it was exposed to the Wraith chemical, triggering some sort of toxic reaction.

SHEPPARD
So instead of feeding off of him…

BECKETT
He was poisoned. So, if the serum did this, then it's more than just a defense against the Wraith.

SHEPPARD
It kills them.

DRUHIN
I'm told you are leaving.

SHEPPARD
Yes, we are.

MCKAY
Not that it hasn't been lovely.

DRUHIN
I wanted you to see the results of the vote before you left.

[He hands a paper to Sheppard, who looks at it and gives it to Beckett.]

BECKETT
Ninety-six percent in favor.

TEYLA
Does the vote include all your people?

DRUHIN
Every one. So you see, Major, we speak with one voice, and we are resolute.

SHEPPARD
Yeah, I can see that.

DRUHIN
When next we meet, I would like to discuss the best way to disseminate the drug on as many worlds as possible.

SHEPPARD
We won't be doing that any time soon.

DRUHIN
Perhaps our victory will change your mind.

SHEPPARD
If and when we ever return, I don't imagine you'll be here. I don't imagine anybody else will be, either.

[Beckett hands the paper back to Druhin.]

SHEPPARD
Good luck.
