Courage
"With all these trials to be faced, I am indeed proud that you are able to maintain that energy, cheerfulness, and cour- age this difficult times demands.
"We cannot expect the world, so grievously wounded, to re- cover quickly, but its conva- lescence can certainly be hastened by our continued en- durance and good will. In His own good time God will lead our feet into ways of peace.

Day the Earth Stood Still
He's got that robot standing there, just waiting for orders to destroy us.
This spaceman, or whatever he is. We automatically assume he's a menace.
- Maybe he isn't at all. - Then what's he hiding for?
- Why doesn't he come out in the open? - Like Heatter says, "What's he up to?"
- Maybe he's afraid. - He's afraid!
Well, after all, he was shot the minute he landed here.

[last lines]
Klaatu: I am leaving soon, and you will forgive me if I speak bluntly. The universe grows smaller every day, and the threat of aggression by any group, anywhere, can no longer be tolerated. There must be security for all, or no one is secure. Now, this does not mean giving up any freedom, except the freedom to act irresponsibly. Your ancestors knew this when they made laws to govern themselves and hired policemen to enforce them. We, of the other planets, have long accepted this principle. We have an organization for the mutual protection of all planets and for the complete elimination of aggression. The test of any such higher authority is, of course, the police force that supports it. For our policemen, we created a race of robots. Their function is to patrol the planets in spaceships like this one and preserve the peace. In matters of aggression, we have given them absolute power over us. This power cannot be revoked. At the first sign of violence, they act automatically against the aggressor. The penalty for provoking their action is too terrible to risk. The result is, we live in peace, without arms or armies, secure in the knowledge that we are free from aggression and war. Free to pursue more... profitable enterprises. Now, we do not pretend to have achieved perfection, but we do have a system, and it works. I came here to give you these facts. It is no concern of ours how you run your own planet, but if you threaten to extend your violence, this Earth of yours will be reduced to a burned-out cinder. Your choice is simple: join us and live in peace, or pursue your present course and face obliteration. We shall be waiting for your answer. The decision rests with you.

ON THIS DAY 20 March
1974: Kidnap attempt on Princess Anne
Princess Anne and her husband Captain Mark Phillips have escaped an apparent kidnap attempt in which four people were wounded.
The royal couple were returning to Buckingham Palace along Pall Mall when their chauffer-driven Rolls-Royce was forced to halt by another car which blocked their route.
A man appeared from a light coloured vehicle and fired six shots, all of which it is said were not directed at the royal couple, but left four people in hospital.
Undergoing surgery
The Princess' private detective Inspector James Beaton fired at the man before he was wounded and the chauffer Alex Callender, one of the Queen's senior drivers, was also injured.
They have both now been taken to Westminster Hospital were they are understood to be undergoing surgery.

Plato's Stepchildren (1968)
Captain James T. Kirk: Alexander, are there other Platonians like you?
Alexander: [defensively] What do you mean "like me?"
Captain James T. Kirk: Who don't have the psychokinetic ability.
Alexander: [relieved] I thought you were talking about my size, because they make fun of me for my size. But, um, to answer your question, I'm the only one who doesn't have it. I was brought here as the court buffoon. That's why I'm everybody's slave, and I have to be at ten places at once, and I never do anything right.
Spock: How does one obtain the power?
Alexander: As far as I know, it just comes to you some time after you're born. They say I'm a throwback. And I am, and so are you... Sorry. I shouldn't have said that.
Captain James T. Kirk: Don't worry about it. We're happy without it.
Alexander: You know, I believe you are! Listen, where you come from, are there are lot of people without the power and my size?
Captain James T. Kirk: Alexander, where I come from, size, shape or color makes no difference. And nobody has the power.

1960: Macmillan speaks of 'wind of change' in Africa
The Prime Minister, Harold Macmillan, has had a frosty reception from politicians in South Africa after speaking frankly against the country's system of apartheid.
In a speech to MPs in the Houses of Parliament in Cape Town, Mr Macmillan spoke of the "wind of change" blowing through the continent of Africa, as more and more majority black populations in the colonies claim the right to rule themselves.
"Whether we like it or not," he said, "this growth of national consciousness is a political fact."

Barnhardt: One thing, Mr. Klaatu: suppose this group should reject your proposals. What is the alternative?
Klaatu: I'm afraid there is no alternative. In such a case, the planet Earth would have to be... eliminated
Barnhardt: Such power exists?
Klaatu: I assure you, such power exists.

Khrushchev has also shown a penchant for clever stratagems designed to entrap and confuse opponents and to increase pressures on them to grant concessions. His exploitation of the U–2 incident was intended to produce a storm of protests against US policy and to embarrass President Eisenhower on the eve of the Paris summit conference. Khrushchev confined his initial announcement of the shoot-down to bare details and then sat back to await the expected disavowal from Washington. After the US issued the cover story of a missing NASA research U–2, Khrushchev announced that he had withheld information that the pilot and aircraft were in Soviet hands, “because had we told everything at once, the Americans would have invented another version; just look how many silly things they have said.”
