Soviet warships being watched in Gulf

A U.S. Navy vessel is closely monitoring the movements of two Soviet warships that entered the Gulf of Mexico and came within 40 miles of the Texas coast, the U.S. Navy said.
The USS Taylor, American guidedmissile frigate, has been tracking the Soviet ships - a guided-missile destroyer and a guided-missile frigate - since they left Havana Thursday, said Lt. Cmdr. Craig Quigley, a Navy spokesman in Norfolk, Va.
The Taylor is always "within visual range" of the Soviet vessels that were last reported about 100 miles southwest of Tampa, Fla., and moving in a southeasterly direction, possibly toward Cuba, said Quigley.
However, there was no way to determine whether the Soviet warships were preparing to leave the Gulf and return to Havana. "They can always change rudder at a moment's notice," he said.
The destroyer and frigate - part of a larger group of four Soviet ships that entered the Caribbean in September - entered the Gulf Thursday, Quigley said. The vessels always remained within international waters, he said.
The Navy took pictures of the two Soviet ships Saturday when a P-3 maritime patrol and anti-submarine warfare aircraft flew over the ships about 40 miles southeast of the Houston-Galveston area.
"That's international waters," Quigley said. "They've never come closer than 20 miles to our shore."

MANAMA, Bahrain - The U.S. Navy today destroyed two offshore Iranian oil platforms, sank a defending Iranian patrol boat and bombed two Iranian frigates. Iran attacked oil facilities off Sharjah and fired on at least two U.S. vessels.
The U.S. attack on the Persian Gulf oil platforms came in retaliation for a mine explosion that tore a hole in a U.S. frigate last week, injuring 10 crewmen.
"We aim to deter further Iranian aggression - not provoke it," President Reagan said. "They must know that we will protect our ships, and if they threaten us, they'll pay a price."
Official estimates of the toll from today's fighting changed through the day, but Reagan stated without elaboration that at least five Iranian vessels of various sizes - but no U.S. ones - had been damaged.
"Following the destruction of the two Iranian military platforms, whose personnel had evacuated after our warning, several Iran naval vessels and small boats attempted to engage our ships and aircraft," Reagan said.
"Three Iranian naval vessels and at least two small boats were sunk or very severely damaged," he added.
Also today, Iran said the United States had entered the Iran-Iraq war, charging U.S. helicopters supported an Iraqi land offensive in the Faw Peninsula. The Pentagon dismissed the charge, saying no U.S. military forces have been involved with Iraqi units.
The White House said three U.S. warships ships blasted each Iranian platform. No U.S. casualties were reported in the attacks, and the Iranians fled prior to the shelling, the White House said.
Iran said a number of oil workers aboard the two platforms were killed or injured. It gave no details.
Defense Secretary Frank C. Carlucci said a U.S. helicopter also was fired upon during the raid but was not hit.
One U.S. warship fired missiles at two approaching Iranian jet fighters, but the fighters reversed course; it was unclear whether they were hit, Carlucci said.
He said an Iranian patrol boat fired on the U.S. cruiser Wainwright, which took part in the attack on one of the platforms. The Wainwright was not hit.

SAN FRANCISCO - A federal appeals court Tuesday threw out the sentence of a man who was convicted of plotting to bomb Los Angeles International Airport at the turn of the millennium.
Ahmed Ressam was arrested near the U.S.-Canadian border in December 1999 after customs agents found 124 pounds of explosives in the trunk of his car as he disembarked from a ferry in Port Angeles, Wash.
Prosecutors said he was intent on bombing the airport on the eve of the millennium. The arrest raised fears of terrorism attacks and prompted the cancellation of New Year's celebrations in Seattle.
The decision does not necessarily mean Ressam will get a shorter term. Federal judges are given wide latitude to sentence defendants as they see fit.
Two of the three appellate judges said Ressam was improperly convicted of carrying an explosive while committing a felony: lying on a customs form.
Emily Langlie, spokeswoman for U.S. attorney John McKay in Seattle, said the government was considering whether to ask the 9th Circuit to rehear the case with 15 judges.

WASHINGTON - Former diplomat Joseph Wilson used to tell reporters he felt certain how his obituary would read. It went: "Joseph C. Wilson IV, who was the last American diplomat to meet with Iraqi President Saddam Hussein, died . . . "
But "it seems to change," Wilson said Tuesday. He has kept mentally revising the obituary to keep up with the political maelstrom over Iraq policy and White House leaks that is swirling around him.
A recent version began: "Joseph C. Wilson IV, the Bush I administration political appointee who did the most damage to the Bush II administration, . . . "
The current version goes: "Joseph C. Wilson IV, the husband of the spy the White House outed, . . . "
Wilson, 53, is also now known as the man the CIA sent to Niger in February 2002 to investigate rumors that Saddam was trying to buy uranium there - and who came back with denials from Niger officials. As President Bush repeated the allegation - most prominently in the so-called "16 words" in the State of the Union address in January - Wilson said, he grew increasingly perplexed. And by July, he was annoyed enough to say publicly that U.S. officials had exaggerated the public case for invading Iraq.
At the time, he said he feared that the White House would retaliate. It allegedly did when administration officials called reporters to identify Wilson's wife as a clandestine CIA operative.
As the world now knows, Wilson is married to Valerie Wilson, nee Plame. She is his third wife. She is 40 and the mother of their 3-year-old twins. In the photos in his office, she has the looks of a film star.
"She is really quite amazing," Wilson said. "We were just discussing today who would play her in the movie," he cracked.

I am writing again today with additional information from my message of February 8th. I think it is quite the coincidence that the judge presiding over the Microsoft antitrust proceedings and as well as the FISA court is the same person: Judge Kollar-Kelly. I have read many articles about her role in the antitrust proceedings and the articles left a favorable impression on me. But I think it is too much of a coincidence that while I am struggling to find out why I have completely lost my private life, I read articles about "Surveillance Court Is Seeking Answers." I must be mixed up in this somehow because I have certainly been wiretapped for a long time. But as I have made obvious to anyone listening, I am obviously not a terrorist and I certainly do not know any terrorists now or in the past. So why does this continue? Why am I living in some kind of echo chamber? When I began to notice that even George W. Bush was listening in to me in the privacy of my domicile is when I began to realize it wasn't just Microsoft spying on me and that would explain why I feel caught up in this FISA court/NSA fiasco. And I know for a fact that every single place I go, these wiretaps and secret surveillance people will follow. And everybody around me knows about it. Any place I go outside of this homeless shelter, there will be people in the shadows listening to my every sound. Any job I apply for, they will be under constant surveillance too and they know it. I have done nothing to deserve having my life wrecked like this.
Also, I wanted to give you an example of why I do not believe Microsoft is serious about software security. I heard a lot of this same stuff from my customers when I worked at Microsoft Premier Support. I believe the problem starts with Bill Gates and his strategies which I believe are a risk to national security because Microsoft products have infiltrated our society to such a great extent.

Another source of chronic IE security shortcomings has been add-ons like ActiveX controls and Browser Helper Objects (BHOs). These have become infamous as conduits for spyware, adware and malware. Sadly, these oft-misused extensibility features remain in IE 7, although they've been configured with more secure default settings.
The majority of IE's notorious security flaws stem from its pervasive integration with Windows. That is a feature no other Web browser offers -- and an ability that Vista's Protected Mode intends to mitigate. IE 7 obviously won't remove all of that tight integration. Lacking deep architectural changes, the effort has focused instead on hardening or eliminating potential vulnerabilities. Unfortunately, this approach requires Microsoft to anticipate everything that could go wrong and block it in advance -- hardly a surefire way to secure a browser.
IE 7 offers several new security features, but it's hardly a given that the situation will improve. There has already been a set of security updates for IE 7 beta 1 released for both Windows Vista and Windows XP computers. Security vulnerabilities in a beta product shouldn't be alarming (IE 7 is hardly what you'd consider "finished" at this point), but it may be a sign that the product's architecture and design still have fundamental security issues.

PARIS - Britain's Princess Diana died in a hospital early today after a car crash in which her companion Dodi al-Fayed was also killed, French Interior Minister Jean-Pierre Chevenement said.
Chevenement was speaking at the Pitie-Salpetriere Hospital in south-east Paris where Diana, 36, was treated after the accident which occurred shortly after midnight.
Diana's driver, who was a security officer from the Ritz Hotel, was also killed in the crash, officials at police headquarters said.
Officials said the princess's bodyguard was extracted from the wrecked Mercedes-Benz 600 and was seriously injured. The accident involved at least one other vehicle in the tunnel under the Pont de l' Alma bridge on the Seine River bank.
The impact was so great, the car`s radiator was hurled back onto the knees of the front-seat passenger.
Princess Diana was sitting in the rear of the car with Dodi, who was killed outright.
The Princess of Wales and the bodyguard were taken to Pitie-Salpetriere Hospital. She was treated in the intensive care unit.
It was first reported that Princess Diana suffered a concussion, a broken arm and serious cuts to her thigh.
French Interior Minister Jean-Pierre Chevenement and the British ambassador, Sir Michael Jay, were at her bedside, police sources said.
Dodi's father, Mohamed al- Fayed, was on his way to Paris his spokesman, Michael Cole, said.
The crash happened shortly after midnight (6 p.m. Houston time) while press photographers on motorcycles chased the princess's car

NCIS: Los Angeles (Naval Criminal Investigative Service: Los Angeles) is an American television series combining elements of the military drama and police procedural genres, which premiered on the CBS network on September 22, 2009. In the USA, the series airs following NCIS on Tuesdays.
NCIS: Los Angeles is the first spin-off of the successful NCIS
The show was known as NCIS: Legend while in production (referring to the episodes of NCIS in which the spin-off was introduced), and other names considered included NCIS: OSP (Office of Special Projects) and NCIS: Undercover. Filming started in February 2009, with the characters being introduced in the two-part NCIS episode titled "Legend", the first part of which aired on April 28, 2009. This episode served as a backdoor pilot for the series, in a manner similar to the introduction of NCIS, which was introduced by way of a two-part episode of JAG.
Chris O'Donnell plays the lead character, G. Callen, the Special Agent in Charge of OSP, whose natural talent for undercover work is legendary. LL Cool J plays the role of Senior Field Agent Sam Hanna, a former Navy SEAL, who is fluent in Arabic and an expert on Middle Eastern culture.
"Identity", the show's first episode, garnered 18.73 million viewers with a 4.4/11 share in the 18–49 year old demographic and therefore won its timeslot. It was the second most watched show of the week, behind only the original NCIS.

Season 6: Episode 23: Legend (Part 2)
Continued from the previous episode, Callen and the OSP team briefly take Michael Rivkin into custody when he shows up for a meeting with Liam, who’s identity Callen is now using. Rivkin, a Mossad agent, explains that he is in the US tracking and eliminating a terrorist cell, and Ziva, being Mossad herself, is able to verify Rivkin’s identity. Rivkin gives OSP the name and address of one of the terrorists he killed, and is then instructed by Director Vance to return to Israel immediately. Callen then goes to the terrorist’s apartment with Sam to check out Rivkin’s story, and they bump in to one of the terrorist’s girlfriends there. Callen, still posing as Liam, is able to convince her to take him to the terror cell’s leader, Haziq. Once there Callen continues to play the part of Liam to discover the identities of the remaining terrorists in the cell, and OSP eventually moves in to take down the terror cell and take Haziq in to custody. Meanwhile, Gibbs stays on top of Rivkin, who before leaving the country makes one last stop where he kills one of the remaining terrorists before Gibbs sends him on his way back to Israel.

This is a list of episodes for the sixth season of the police procedural drama NCIS. The sixth season of NCIS started on September 23, 2008. The new NCIS Director Leon Vance (played by Rocky Carroll) became a regular cast character and Agent Gibbs' new team members were introduced: NCIS Agents Michelle Lee from Legal, Daniel Keating from Cybercrime, and Special Agent Brent Langer from the FBI. After the end of the second episode, McGee, Ziva and Tony had returned to the team, while Lee and Keating were transferred back to Legal and Cybercrime respectively. Langer was killed in the first episode of the season.
The two-part episode "Legend" introduced the spin-off TV series NCIS: Los Angeles.

Today is a momentous day for the Iraqi people. The Iraqi people have now been liberated in spirit, as well as in fact. As they celebrate, we also stop to remember the many U.S. and Coalition forces who gave their lives to make this moment possible – including many brave Iraqis who served in their new security forces and who have died fighting for their country. Thanks to all of them, the Iraqi people face a future, not of terror, but of freedom. Today, many Iraqis can dare to believe what we have said from the beginning: that the era of the brutal dictatorship of Saddam Hussein is over. His terrorist regime is finished.
Yesterday’s successful capture was the result of close coordination of intelligence and a rapid, skillfully-executed military action by U.S. forces. Operation Eagle Claw: The Iran Hostage Rescue Mission
The Mission
After five months of planning and preparation, the Eagle Claw participants were deployed for mission execution. Just after seven p.m. on the 24th of April, 1980, the eight helicopters (called “Bluebeard”) departed from the Nimitz, nearly 60 miles off the coast of Iran. They had been preceded by the EC-130 refuelers (“Republic”) and the MC-130s (“Dragon”), carrying Delta Force, from Masirah.
Less than two hours into the mission, Bluebeard 6 had an indicator light warn of a main rotor blade spar crack. This was often a false reading on RH-53Ds, but the crew landed (followed by Bluebeard 8) and decided to abandon the helicopter after inspecting the rotor blades. The two crews flew on to Desert One in Bluebeard 8. The mission was now down one helicopter.
Penetrating deep into Iran, the fixed wing contingent ran into a phenomenon called a “haboob” – fine dust particles which obscured vision. A short time later they ran into another haboob which was much more intense than the first one. Kyle attempted to warn the RH-53s, but had no luck with his communications gear. While these presented minor obstacles to the airplanes, they upset the cohesion of the helicopter flight, which had to disperse in order to avoid collision. The helicopter pilots had never even been briefed on the existence of haboob conditions, or their effects on low-flying formations. In the middle of this, Bluebeard 5 had an electrical power problem which convinced the crew to abort back to the Nimitz. Maintaining radio silence, they were unable to alert Kyle or Seiffert that they were pulling out. The mission was now down two helicopters.

Q: Can nuclear explosions cause earthquakes?
A: On January 19, 1968, a thermonuclear test, codenamed Faultless, took place in the Central Nevada Supplemental Test Area. The codename turned out to be a poor choice of words because a fresh fault rupture some 1200 meters long was produced. Seismographic records showed that the seismic waves produced by the fault movement were much less energetic than those produced directly by the nuclear explosion.
Analysis of local seismic recordings (within a couple of miles) of nuclear tests at the Nevada Test Site shows that some tectonic stress is released simultaneously with the explosion. Analysis of the seismic wavefield generated by the blast shows the source can be characterized as 70-80 percent dilational (explosive-like) and 20-30 percent deviatoric (earthquake-like). The rock in the vicinity of the thermonuclear device is shattered by the passage of the explosions
shock wave. This releases the elastic strain energy that was stored in the rock and adds an earthquake-like component to the seismic wavefield. The possibility of large Nevada Test Site nuclear explosions triggering damaging earthquakes in California was publicly raised in 1969. As a test of this possibility, rate of earthquake occurrence in northern California (magnitude 3.5 and larger) and the known times of the six largest thermonuclear tests (1965-1969) were plotted and it was obvious that no peaks in the seismicity occur at the times of the explosions. This is in agreement with theoretical calculations that transient strain from underground thermonuclear explosions is not sufficiently large to trigger fault rupture at distances beyond a few tens of kilometers from the shot point.

Long and Billy Dean Roark, a Senate employee, were charged with accepting bribes, in violation of South Carolina law, paid to induce Long to procure state jobs for the persons who gave the bribes. Roark pled guilty and testified against Long.
The evidence disclosed the following undisputed facts. Roark urged an acquaintance to buy a state job from Long. This man told an agent of the Federal Bureau of Investigation about Roark's suggestion and agreed to act as an informant for the FBI. Wearing a tape recorder, the informant met several times with both Roark and Long, and he paid $700 to Long and $800 to Roark in return for Long's promise to get him a state job. The informant then introduced Roark and Long to an FBI agent who said he was looking for state employment. The agent also had several meetings with Long and Roark, all of which were taped by a body recorder. At one of these meetings, the agent paid Long $500 as a down payment for a state job. Although both the informant and the agent obtained interviews with state agencies, including the state Alcohol Beverage Control Commission, neither was given state employment before the grand jury returned the indictments against Roark and Long.
To establish a violation of the RICO statute, the government must show that the enterprise affects interstate commerce.

I have no life anymore.
My old life is over.
All I do is what I have been communicating to you.
That is all I do.
There is no point to anything else.
I don't know what I am going to do next. I had been thinking I would start up again to posting some details on my blog as I have been doing but I woke up this morning and now I feel certain I am not going to continue. At least not today.
I woke up from a dream this morning where I had been on a transit bus in Japan when that tsunami hit Japan on 11 March 2011. I dreamed I was riding on a transit bus in Japan and I was wearing the white summer dress uniform of the United States Navy I was wearing in 1989, for instance, and I was there because I was delivering an arrest warrant to an American living in Japan. The arrest warrant was for a death sentence. I got lost on the bus trip though and I couldn't read the names of the streets outside and so I put the arrest warrant paper in my front left uniform shirt pocket and I was going to go back to where I had come from. Then the alarms started going off. Something probably similar to our Emergency Broadcast System. I saw people around me that looked frightened. I couldn't understand what was being spoken but I knew it was an alarm. I heard something about 'two minutes.' I woke up thinking about how the tsunami swarmed in around the buildings and the transit bus. I thought trying to escape through the hatch in the roof of the bus, which is present in most of metro bus vehicle's I have been on in Seattle. I thought how the tsunami flood waters would ruin my white uniform.

He just walked right into it.
As I was being discharged from the VA hospital in 2005 the doctor at the VA hospital told me he would keep me there inpatient at the VA hospital if he could. That was the day Patty Murray was outside the VA hospital giving a speech to the press while the social workers at the hospital snuck me out the other entrance as they dropped me off at the Theodora senior citizens home where I stayed for a while, all drugged up by the VA hospital, until they let me move into the homeless shelter for veterans in Shoreline Washington.

Selah man pleads guilty to threatening Patty Murray

A Yakima County man pleaded guilty Thursday in U.S. District Court in Seattle to making threats against U.S. Sen. Patty Murray over her support of health-care overhaul.
Charles Alan Wilson was arrested at his Selah home April 6.
In a call on April 4, according to charging documents filed in federal court, Wilson made reference to being in a group of protesters outside the Red Lion Hotel in Yakima a week earlier when Murray was in town to speak at a Chamber of Commerce event. Local tea-party activists participating in the demonstration held signs protesting the health-care overhaul and equating Obama's agenda with socialism.
"Yeah, we were outside waiting for you," Wilson said in his voice-mail message, records show.
