The only dream I remember from last night was detailed but not very long. I think that was the dream I awoke from and got out of my bed to sit down at my desk.

Many details are difficult to describe and I am not a very good writer but in the dream, after a scene where I saw my mother, I saw she was sick, and then I saw what I think was a US Navy medical doctor who would not help her and I heard dialog “I knew that little twerp wouldn’t help us” and then she was left sitting on a bench, in a shopping mall and then I was walking along and a police officer started hassling me. I was looking for a military identification card in my pocket and I knew it was in there but I never did find it in the dream. I heard the police officer harassing me saying to another police office that had walked up that they seemed to have found the “fourth one.” I asked “fourth what?” The dream ended there.

I only thought to check the numbers for today. I read those numbers and that led me to check the numbers for two days from now, the 8th of February.

The “fourth” one.

On this day in 1995, the American space shuttle Atlantis docks with the Russian space station Mir to form the largest man-made satellite ever to orbit the Earth.

This historic moment of cooperation between former rival space programs was also the 100th human space mission in American history. At the time, Daniel Goldin, chief of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), called it the beginning of "a new era of friendship and cooperation" between the U.S. and Russia. With millions of viewers watching on television, Atlantis blasted off from NASA's Kennedy Space Center in eastern Florida on June 27, 1995.

Obama takes first step in presidential bid

WASHINGTON – Democratic Sen. Barack Obama said today he is taking the initial step in a presidential bid that could make him the nation's first black to occupy the White House.

Obama announced on his Web site, www.barackobama.com, that he was filing a presidential exploratory committee. He said he would announce more about his plans in his home state of Illinois on Feb. 10.

SAN FRANCISCO - A federal appeals court Tuesday threw out the sentence of a man who was convicted of plotting to bomb Los Angeles International Airport at the turn of the millennium.

Ahmed Ressam was arrested near the U.S.-Canadian border in December 1999 after customs agents found 124 pounds of explosives in the trunk of his car as he disembarked from a ferry in Port Angeles, Wash.

Prosecutors said he was intent on bombing the airport on the eve of the millennium. The arrest raised fears of terrorism attacks and prompted the cancellation of New Year's celebrations in Seattle.


The decision does not necessarily mean Ressam will get a shorter term. Federal judges are given wide latitude to sentence defendants as they see fit.

Two of the three appellate judges said Ressam was improperly convicted of carrying an explosive while committing a felony: lying on a customs form.

Emily Langlie, spokeswoman for U.S. attorney John McKay in Seattle, said the government was considering whether to ask the 9th Circuit to rehear the case with 15 judges.

A little bit ago the President placed a phone call to Tom Tidwell, who is the Deputy Regional Forester at the U.S. Forest Service, to express condolences over what is now being called the Esperanza incident, a fire near Palm Springs, California, that has claimed the lives of four firefighters who were Forest Service employees


One other note. Today marks the last day at the White House of Frederick Jones. Please, a round of applause. (Applause.) Fred really has been terrific in a lot of ways, and I personally want to thank him. I especially recall a few weeks ago, in the latest Korean incident, when we were up in the middle of the night, and Fred was handling a whole lot of that. And, Fred, thanks, and Godspeed. And anything we can do, let us know.

MR. SNOW: You know what he's going to do, he's going to put his feet up for a very brief period of time.

Study estimates 600,000 Iraqis dead by violence

More than 600,000 Iraqis have died by violence since the U.S.-led invasion in 2003, according to a study released Wednesday by researchers at Johns Hopkins University.

The figure is based on surveys of households throughout most of the country. It vastly exceeds estimates cited by the Iraqi government, the United Nations, aid and anti-war groups, and President Bush.

The new estimate was immediately challenged by the Pentagon. Lt. Col. Mark Bellesteros, a Pentagon spokesman, said the Iraqi government "would be in a better position ... to provide more accurate information on deaths in Iraq."
