Stari Most
Okay, I think I got a temporary workaround solution for the formatting problems I have for the blogger.com editor. There might be a simper solution but I don't know what it is.
I don't know how many reports in past months I transmitted across the wire back to Texarkana Arkansas in my private email account. Over a hundred I would guess.
I can convert any of those with my workaround solution but damn that effort takes about as long as it took me to create the report in the first place. That's an exaggeration but it still takes me a long time.

I've been thinking for a while that the dreams I have are literal. They are the foreign dreams I used to write, the dreams produced by the manipulators of my thoughts. Don't know what to say about that last one. Jumbled, disturbing, painful. Somebody put in a lot of effort to make me forget those memories, if it is real. There was a scene there straight out the opening of "Saving Private Ryan" except that it seemed to be in the Middle East. And it was something like a pyramid I was running into, and I was by myself and every gun, there were countless guns, was turning towards me. It was sort of like a pyramid I was rushing onto, except that it was elogated, like a castle wall. In another scene, a two-star general or admiral was captured by the enemy. Back in the stretched-pyramid, I was fighting off an attack. Grenades were flying in on me, but I don't recall them going off. Then, I and some of my fellow soldiers seemed to be cleaning the place. A lot of other stuff that is fading from my mind. I feel sad, very sad.

Confidence men Calvin Churchill and "Clip McGurk," in the business of fixing races, fights and other sporting events, are forced to go on the lam when when Henry Potke, special investigator from the Revenue Department, pursues them for tax evasion. Potke catches up with them in a hotel room, where the con men shake off the hapless officer by feigning the contraction of a highly infectious influenza. Calvin soon has the officer worried that he may have caught the disease, and after performing an on-the-spot examination and diagnosing him with the dreaded influenza, he sends the gullible oaf home. In a hurry to skip town, Calvin separates from Clip, who is told to go to Desert Springs, California, to see Calvin's estranged wife Alice, who has been teaching tennis at a resort. When Calvin meets W. R. Gridley, an unscrupulous airplane salesman, Gridley takes him for a sucker and uses his lovely daughter Grace to seduce Calvin to help him sell his unwanted air balloon. Calvin believes that Gridley is the sucker, however, and negotiates a free airplane from him in order to find the perfect location for a stratospheric flight in his new balloon. Calvin continues to bamboozle the unwitting Gridley, and even introduces the acrophobic Clip to him as one of the most daring balloonists in America. Later, Alice tells Calvin that she will not return to him until he reforms and becomes more financially stable. No sooner does she tell him this, than she witnesses the huckster fleecing some hotel guests to pay for his room. I also started thinking again about that anchor chain incident I have written about several times. I haven't found any specific incident that could represent, although I would imagine that a similar event happened on the USS Taylor, just that I was never there. But as for a metaphor, similar to "Wilson" drifting away on the ocean in "Cast Away" and the observer trying to keep their own tether on reality as they watch that family member drift away, I think the anchor chain represents my loss of memory. But it is important to note that we didn't lose the chain. We had a contingency plan that saved it and we then repaired the chain. As I wrote earlier, that is the time, which I can still visualize, when the chain almost chopped off my ankles but I jumped up on the bulwark, almost falling over the side, and avoided the chain and it slapped around the bulwark a few inches below me.

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: 04/30/07 6:25 AM I thought a lot about this photo of the USS Taylor FFG-50 after I saw it. Especially because of the perspective of the photographer compared to my own artificial and symbolic memories. The date on the photo was about a month after I quit Microsoft and moved out to Spokane Valley, WA. I was staying at a hotel named Crosslands at the time. I remember a woman at the counter at the hotel was talking to someone on the phone and she mentioned that people sometime call that hotel the “Crossroads.”

I am very pleased to be here on a day so rich in symbolism and in hope for the new Bosnia Herzegovina.
All of us have etched into our memories ghastly snapshots of Bosnia's past. The human grief and misery; the murder and mayhem; the destruction of homes and of the relics of a more civilised history - like Stari Most. What is it about the smashing of this bridge which so horrified us all? Maybe it was its long history. Built by skilled 16th century engineers it was smashed in minutes by a modern day killing machine. Its Turkish Architect didn't think it would last four days. In fact it lasted more than four centuries. In a country which lost over 200,000 people it may seem shocking that we should focus so much on the destruction of buildings. Yet the quality of our buildings tells us a lot about ourselves. People construct buildings to last because they have confidence in the future. People construct beautiful places of worship because their societies have developed far beyond the point when day to day survival is their only pre-occupation. And people build bridges for the same reason; they have long outgrown an obsession with their own immediate surroundings.
Ladies and Gentlemen, this year has seen a number of apologies made for crimes committed in the Balkans. That is a healthy process. But the European Union cannot escape its share of blame. We should have done more to help you. More - and earlier - I deeply regret that we didn't.
That's the past. We have seen enough of Europe's demons. Abraham Lincoln once talked of "the better angels of our nature". It is time to let them have full play. Europe will play its full part. This is the tenth anniversary of the European Union Mission in Mostar. It has done much to bring this beautiful town back from the dead. Lord Ashdown, the High Representative, has shown a deep personal commitment to the people of Bosnia in his time here. His energy, determination and leadership have been hugely important in moving the country forward. Bosnia has also been well served by an excellent Delegation, ably led, and strongly supported in Brussels. Next year the new European military force will start up operations joining the European Union Police Mission which is doing excellent work. I should also pay tribute to the generous commitment of our international partners from all over the world; the United States, Russia, Turkey, Canada, and Japan.
But Bosnia's future will depend above all on its own people - on their willingness to make the country work. This is a tough challenge, I know that. I spent a good part of my political life in Northern Ireland so I understand how hard it is to overcome a history of ethnic conflict. But there is no sensible alternative. Here in Mostar the opening of Stari Most is a clear strong statement about the town's future. A future living and working together as one in one country.
There is another bridge as clearly visible as Stari Most. A bridge which Bosnia needs to cross. On the other side one can clearly see Bosnia's future. A European future. Your country will cross that bridge one day soon, I hope, to join us in the wider European family. And we will walk with you on that passage every step of the way.

The Old Bridge Area of the Old City of Mostar with its multicultural architecture is a symbol of coexistence of communities from diverse cultural, ethnic and religious backgrounds.
Old Mostar developed mainly in the Ottoman period, from the 16th century, and it was part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire from the 19th century. The 16th century Ottoman Old Bridge is its main monument.
Between 1992 and 1995 the town and bridge have been badly damaged during the Bosnian war. Its excellent reconstruction has been compared to that of Warsaw. The completely rebuilt bridge opened on July 23, 2004.

1944: Airborne troops retreat from Arnhem
British and Polish soldiers withdrew from Arnhem last night south across the Rhine. Those still trapped in the Dutch town have surrendered, according to the Germans.
They had held the northern end of the bridge that crossed the Lower Rhine for nine days, the last three without water.
British reinforcements have not been able to secure the south bank of the river and a German counteroffensive has managed to take the town of Elst to the south of Arnhem.
The failure of the daring airborne operation designed to take the rivers Rhine, Waal and Maas and open the way for an Allied assault on Germany itself has ruled out an early end to the war.

Allies slaughtered by Germans in Arnhem
On this day in 1944, Operation Market-Garden, a plan to seize bridges in the Dutch town of Arnhem, fails, as thousands of British and Polish troops are killed, wounded, or taken prisoner.
British Gen. Bernard Montgomery conceived an operation to take control of bridges that crossed the Rhine River, from the Netherlands into Germany, as a strategy to make "a powerful full-blooded thrust to the heart of Germany." The plan seemed cursed from the beginning. It was launched on September 17, with parachute troops and gliders landing in Arnhem. Holding out as long as they could, waiting for reinforcements, they were compelled to surrender. Unfortunately, a similar drop of equipment was delayed, and there were errors in locating the proper drop location and bad intelligence on German troop strength. Added to this, bad weather and communication confused the coordination of the Allied troops on the ground.
The Germans quickly destroyed the railroad bridge and took control of the southern end of the road bridge. The Allies struggled to control the northern end of the road bridge, but soon lost it to the superior German forces. The only thing left was retreat-back behind Allied lines. But few made it: Of more than 10,000 British and Polish troops engaged at Arnhem, only 2,900 escaped.
Claims were made after the fact that a Dutch Resistance fighter, Christiaan Lindemans, betrayed the Allies, which would explain why the Germans were arrayed in such numbers at such strategic points. A conservative member of the British Parliament, Rupert Allason, writing under the named Nigel West, dismissed this conclusion in his A Thread of Deceit, arguing that Lindemans, while a double agent, "was never in a position to betray Arnhem."
Winston Churchill would lionize the courage of the fallen Allied soldiers with the epitaph "Not in vain." Arnhem was finally liberated on April 15, 1945.

1967: Russian cosmonaut dies in space crash
The Soviet Union has announced the catastrophic failure of its latest space mission, with the crash of Soyuz 1 and the death of the cosmonaut on board.
Colonel Vladimir Komarov, 40, is the first known victim of a space flight. He was an experienced cosmonaut, on his second flight, and had completed all his experiments successfully before returning to Earth.
But within seconds of landing, just after he re-entered the Earth's atmosphere, the strings of the parachute intended to slow his descent apparently became tangled.
The spaceship hurtled to the ground from four miles up. It is likely that Colonel Komarov was killed instantly on impact.

I remember well that day 2/1/2002. I was riding my bicycle from Bellevue, Washington, along the regular route I followed to the office I worked at in the Microsoft building in Issaquah, Washington. I was crossing a small bridge next to the Costco building in Issaquah and within sight of the Microsoft building when my bicycle literally flipped end-over-end and I went face first into the concrete sidewalk. I was left sprawled out on my back on the sidewalk among the wooded area of that bridge and dazed for a few minutes. I got up after a few minutes and rode my bicycle the remaining mile or so to the office and noticed a short time later that I had a black eye forming from where my left eye brow seemed to have hit the concrete just before my helmet absorbed the rest of the impact which was painful in itself to my head. I would later think that someone had caused that accident to happen and that it was something similar to that scene in the 1963 film "The Great Escape" where Steve McQueen stretches the thin wire across the road to knock the German soldier off his motorcycle.
