And then they might have come back and said, you know what, we got some great new ideas that we think can get the economy moving -- that’s not what happened. They are clinging to the same worn-out, tired, snake-oil ideas that they were peddling before. (Laughter and applause.)

I’m not -- you know what they are. They do have the benefit of being simple. (Laughter.) You cut taxes, mostly for millionaires and billionaires, regardless of the impact on the deficit. You cut rules for all manner of special interests. And you cut middle-class families to fend for themselves. So if you’re somebody who just lost your job, tough luck. You’re on your own. You might not even get unemployment insurance, according to this philosophy. You’re a young person who can’t afford to go to college? Pull yourself up by your own bootstraps. Tough luck, you’re on your own. You don’t have health insurance? Too bad, you’re on your own. This agenda that poses as conservatism is not conservative. It resulted in a radical shift from record surpluses to record deficits, allowed Wall Street to run wild. Nearly destroyed our economy.

Now, I bring this up not to re-argue the past. I bring it up because I don’t want to re-live the past. We have been there. We tried what they are trying to sell and we’re not buying this time. (Applause.)

I’ve been using an analogy that Barbara likes quite a bit, so I’ve got to make sure to use it here. (Laughter.) Otherwise, she’ll scold me. Imagine the Republicans driving our economy into the ditch. And it’s a deep ditch. (Laughter.) And they and their buddies somehow walk away from the accident, but the car is still down there. So Barbara and I, we put on our boots and we rappel down into the ditch. (Laughter.) And it’s muddy and hot. And there are bugs there. And we’re pushing on this car, trying to get it out of the ditch -- pushing and pushing. And even though Barbara is small, she’s tough. So she’s pushing. (Laughter.)

And every once in a while we look up, and there are the Republicans, they’re up there, you know, slipping on a Slurpee and fanning themselves. (Laughter.) And we’ll ask them, “Why don’t you come down here?” And they say, “No, no. But you guys aren’t pushing hard enough. You’re not pushing the right way.”

Ron Settles was a Long Beach State College football player who was arrested by the Signal Hill Police Department. The morning after his arrest, he was found severely beaten and hanging in his jail cell. A huge furor erupted afterwards over the suspicious nature of his death. The police said he committed suicide, but this story was very weak. The Los Angeles District Attorney filed charges against them, with the Signal Hill Police officers eventually taking the fifth ammendment so as to not incriminate themselves. No one was convicted of Settle's murder, but the city of Signal Hill did pay a large settlement to the family. One of several highly controversial deaths of arrestee's in the 1970's and 80's that changed the way police departments deal with prisoners. Many police departments now videotape jail areas, and any time a police officer or correction officer touches a prisoner in any sort of a restraining way, a report is required to be written.

Now, it is now up to you to let the Republicans know that we haven’t forgotten how we got here, that we don’t have amnesia. It’s up to you to be clear that this isn’t a referendum on Barbara. This is a choice between the policies that got us into this mess and the policies that are going to lead us out of this mess. (Applause.)

This is a choice between the past and the future, between fear and hope, between moving backwards and moving forwards. And I don’t know about you, but I want to move forward. (Applause.)

The chair of the Republican campaign committee was quoted in the newspaper a while back, Barbara. He was asked, well, what would you do if you took power in the House? He said, well, we’re going to pursue the exact same agenda that we pursued before Obama took office.

The term ballistic trauma refers to a form of physical trauma sustained from the discharge of arms or munitions. The most common forms of ballistic trauma stem from firearms used in armed conflicts, civilian sporting and recreational pursuits, and criminal activity.


The degree of tissue disruption caused by a projectile is related to the size of the temporary versus permanent cavity it creates as it passes through tissue.


Non-fatal gunshot wounds frequently have severe and long-lasting effects, even after the victim has made a successful recovery. Typically, the consequences involve some form of major disfigurement and/or permanent disability.

That’s my hope. That was my hope. But we know what actually happened. The Republicans made a tactical decision. I mean, they bragged about this, so this is not something I’m making up. They basically said to themselves, you know what, we created such a big mess, we have dug such a big hole, the economy is going to take so long to recover that we’re better off not trying to solve the problems. We’re better off standing on the sidelines and hoping people forget that we caused the problems -- (laughter) -- and then pointing our fingers and trying to place the blame on Barack Obama or Barbara Boxer.

That was their strategy. Their strategy was premised on amnesia. (Laughter and applause.) That was their approach.

UNION, S.C. - The prosecution urged the jurors at the Susan Smith trial to hold on to their common sense in the weeks ahead, and they would come to see Smith as a selfish, malicious killer who sacrificed her children for the love of the son of a rich industrialist.

The defense begged them to look into their hearts and, through that softer focus, find a disturbed, childlike figure who, after a lifetime of sadness, snapped like a dry twig.

As simplistic as those opposing views might seem, they will be the crux of the next month of testimony in Smith's capital murder trial, which officially began Tuesday with opening statements in the elegant old Union County Courthouse.

"For nine days in the fall of 1994, Susan Smith looked this country in the eyes and lied," said Keith Giese, a special prosecutor and assistant to the state's prosecutor, Tommy Pope. "She begged God to return her children to safety, and the whole time she knew her children were lying dead at the bottom of John D. Long Lake.

"She knew right from wrong. She could control her actions if she wanted to, and she did not. This was a conscious decision to kill her children."

Smith, who has sat quietly through most of the court proceedings, started to cry.

Naval Flight Officer


A Naval Flight Officer (NFO) is an officer in the United States Navy or United States Marine Corps that specializes in airborne weapons and sensor systems. NFOs are not pilots (Naval Aviators) per se, but they may perform many "co-pilot" functions, depending on the type of aircraft.


NFOs in the Navy are unrestricted line officers, eligible for command at sea and ashore in the naval aviation communities. They are also eligible to hold senior flag rank positions, including command of carrier strike groups, joint task forces, numbered fleets, naval component commands and unified combatant commands. Similarly, Marine Corps NFOs are also eligible for command at sea and ashore within Marine Aviation, and are also eligible to hold senior general officer positions, such as command of Marine Aircraft Wings, Joint Task Forces, Marine Expeditionary Forces, Marine Corps component command and unified combatant commands.


The counterpart to the NFO in the United States Air Force is the Combat Systems Officer (CSO), encompassing the previous roles of Navigator, Weapons Systems Officer and Electronic Warfare Officer. Although NFOs in the Navy's E-2 Hawkeye aircraft perform functions similar to the USAF Air Battle Manager, their NFO training track is more aligned with that of USAF Combat Systems Officers.

And we’ll ask them, “Why don’t you come down here?” And they say, “No, no. But you guys aren’t pushing hard enough. You’re not pushing the right way.”

Finally, we get the car up on level ground. We’re ready to move forward. The car is banged up. It needs some bodywork. It needs a tune up. But it’s ready to move in the right direction. And we get this tap on our shoulders. We look back. Lo and behold, it’s the Republicans. And what are they saying? They’re saying, “We want the keys back.” (Laughter.) You cannot have the keys back. You don’t know how to drive. You don’t know how to drive. You don’t know how to drive. (Applause.) No, no.

You can ride with us. (Laughter.) But you’ll have to be in the backseat. We’re going to put middle-class families in the front seat. We’re driving for them.

You notice, when you want to go forward, you put your car in what? “D.” When you want to go backwards, what happens? You put it in “R.” (Laughter.) We don’t want to go back into that ditch. (Applause.) Don’t do it. Don’t do it.

Propaganda, the coordinated attempt to influence public opinion through the use of media, was skillfully used by the NSDAP in the years leading up to and during Adolf Hitler's leadership of Germany (1933–1945). National Socialist propaganda provided a crucial instrument for acquiring and maintaining power, and for the implementation of their policies, including the pursuit of total war and the extermination of millions of people in the Holocaust.


In power (1933–39)

Before World War II, Nazi propaganda strategy, officially promulgated by the Ministry of Public Enlightenment and Propaganda, stressed several themes. Their goals were to establish external enemies (countries that allegedly inflicted the Treaty of Versailles on Germany) and internal enemies, such as Jews, Romani, homosexuals, and Bolsheviks. Hitler and Nazi propagandists played on the anti-Semitism and resentment present in Germany. The Jews were blamed for things such as robbing the German people of their hard work while themselves avoiding physical labour. Der Stürmer, a Nazi propaganda newspaper, told Germans that Jews kidnapped small children before Passover because “Jews need the blood of a Christian child, maybe, to mix in with their Matzah.” Posters, films, cartoons, and fliers were seen throughout Germany which attacked the Jewish community, such as the 1940 film The Eternal Jew.

Reaching out to ethnic Germans in other countries such as Czechoslovakia, France, Poland, the Soviet Union and the Baltic states was another aim of Nazi party propaganda. In Mein Kampf, Hitler makes a direct remark to those outside of Germany. He states that pain and misery is forced upon ethnic Germans outside of Germany, and that they dream of common fatherland. He finished by stating they needed to fight for one’s nationality. Throughout Mein Kampf, he pushed Germans worldwide to make the struggle for political power and independence their main focus.

Nazi propaganda efforts then focused on creating external enemies.
