Stolen Valor

JOURNAL ARCHIVE: May 2006

Anyway, the 9 point glided in to my view from the right and then just stopped in front of me. I fired three times at it but missed. I'm not sure if those missed rounds actually represent misses or if it represents lack of discipline during combat. For the fourth round, I gave up on using the scope, which was unnecessary really, and switched to iron sights and nailed it. It jumped up slightly into the air and then dropped, shifted, a little bit to my left.

Memorable quotes for

The Final Countdown (1980)

Lasky: Think of the history of the next forty years...

Commander Richard Owens: I have a suspicion history will be a little more difficult to beat, than you imagine Mr. Lasky.

Lasky: I'm talking about the classic paradox of time. Imagine, for example, I go back in time and meet my own Grandfather. Long before he got married, before he had children. And we have an argument, and I kill him. Now if that happens, how am I ever going to be born? And if I can never be born, how can I go back in history and meet my very own Grandfather?

Commander Richard Owens: [angrily] I'm not half the theorist you are, Mr. Lasky. But I still have a gut instinct that things only happen once. And if they have happened, then there's nothing we can do to change them. Nor should we try.

Lasky: Well, how are you going to avoid it? It's already happening, and we're already involved!

Commander Dan Thurman: For Christ's sake! What is this, some half-assed Princeton debating society? We are in a war situation! This is a United States warship!

#6 We begin bombing in five minutes

"My fellow Americans, I'm pleased to tell you today that I've signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes."

August 11, 1984: Reagan was getting ready for a 9 a.m. live broadcast from his ranch, Rancho del Cielo, near Santa Barbara, Calif. He joked around with the National Public Radio audio engineers during the microphone check before the broadcast, and said, "My fellow Americans, I'm pleased to tell you today that I've signed legislation that will outlaw Russia forever. We begin bombing in five minutes." The comments were not broadcast, but unbelievably, during an election year no less, somehow, as hard as it may be to fathom, somebody, maybe even from NPR, leaked a recording of the joke to the public.

Russia was not amused.

I have also been remembering that time in Ashdown High School when I was running for Class President. Consistent with Tapesty, I was elected my Junior year, but did not get elected my Senior. I was campaigning hard for re-election though, explaining to all that they should vote for experience.

#8 My opponent's youth and inexperience

"I want you to know that also I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit, for political purposes, my opponent's youth and inexperience."

October 21, 1984: In the second presidential debate with candidate Walter Mondale, Reagan was grilled over his age by Henry "Hank" Trewhitt of the Baltimore Sun. "You already are the oldest President in history, and some of your staff say you were tired after your most recent encounter with Mr. Mondale. I recall, yes, that President Kennedy, who had to go for days on end with very little sleep during the Cuba missile crisis. Is there any doubt in your mind that you would be able to function in such circumstances?" Reagan replied, "Not at all, Mr. Trewhitt and I want you to know that also I will not make age an issue of this campaign. I am not going to exploit for political purposes my opponent's youth and inexperience." Trewhitt responded, "Mr. President, I'd like to head for the fence and try to catch that one before it goes over."

This scene of the Priestess performing some kind of ritual for their minds reminds me of a letter I mailed sometime in 2003. I guess that was the second half of 2003. Can't remember for certain. I do remember that I was living in that apartment in Redmond and that I mailed the letter in 2003. I wrote a letter to the Chief of Naval Operations and sent it to some kind of special projects department with several details in the letter and one was about writing a program for the UNIVAC fire-control computers on the USS Wainwright CG-28 that would transfer that memory of one active fire-control computer to another fire-control computer that could load the fire-control solution program because of what ever failure that had happened at a time when the fire-control computer was needed to control the missile weapons systems that would fend off an attack from hostile forces.

Chief Galen Tyrol - Colonial Fleet Battlestar Galactica flight deck crew supervisor: Nobody's taking you to jail. Just calm down.

Leoben Conoy: Yeah, maybe. So who the hell are you?

Tigh: Report.

Chief: We've got structural buckling all along this line. We've gotta get those fires out!

Captain: I know! Fire suppressors are down, water main is down, I'm trying to fight this fire with hand-held gear.

Chief: We've got another decompression heading toward the port pod.

Captain: What are your orders, sir?

(Tigh says nothing, looks at Adama.)

Captain: Sir? (to Chief) All right listen, I need you to get the rest of your DC teams down from the landing bay, give them a-

Tigh: No time. Seal off everything forward of frame 30 and start an emergency vent of all compartments.

Chief: But wait, I've got over a hundred people trapped up behind frame 34, I just need a minute to get 'em out.

Tigh: We don't seal it off now, we're going to lose a lot more than a hundred men. Seal it off, now.

Chief: They just need a minute!

Tigh: We don't have a minute! The fire reaches the hangar pods, it'll ignite the fuel lines and we'll lose the ship. Do it!

Chief: (on intercom) All hands. Seal off... all bulkheads, 25 through 40. That's an order.

(We see people in the affected area, running, coughing, through the smoke. Tigh turns a key to vent the areas - bodies fly out, the fire extinguishes.)

Captain: Venting complete. Fires are out.

Tigh: If they remembered their training, then they had their suits on and they were braced for possible vent action.

Chief: There's a lot of rooks in there.

Tigh: No one's a rook anymore.

U.S. blasts 5 Iranian targets

Houston Chronicle News Services

MON 04/18/1988 HOUSTON CHRONICLE

MANAMA, Bahrain - The U.S. Navy today destroyed two offshore Iranian oil platforms, sank a defending Iranian patrol boat and bombed two Iranian frigates. Iran attacked oil facilities off Sharjah and fired on at least two U.S. vessels.

One U.S. warship fired missiles at two approaching Iranian jet fighters, but the fighters reversed course; it was unclear whether they were hit, Carlucci said.

He said an Iranian patrol boat fired on the U.S. cruiser Wainwright, which took part in the attack on one of the platforms. The Wainwright was not hit.

A Memory Lapse

For Maureen Reagan, the journey began in late 1993 with her first "click of awareness" that something had gone awry in her father's mind, she wrote in a January 2000 essay for Newsweek magazine.

She and her father, former President Ronald Reagan, were talking about one of his movies, the 1954 drama Prisoner of War.

"For years he had told me about the gruesome tortures inflicted on American prisoners by the North Koreans," she wrote. "But now he seemed to be hearing me tell the stories for the first time. Finally he looked at me and said, 'Mermie, I have no recollection of making that movie.' "

"No actor ever forgets a role," she wrote, "so I should have realized something was wrong."

ON THIS DAY 26 February

1991: Iraqi troops flee Kuwait City

The Kuwaiti capital has been liberated by the Gulf War Allies after 208 days of Iraqi occupation.

Thousands of Iraqi troops began leaving the city after an order from President Saddam Hussein, broadcast this morning, to withdraw immediately.

He said he was ordering the retreat because of "the aggression of 30 countries against Iraq" and the economic blockade led by the US.

The first group of Allies into the city centre was a reconnaissance team of 12 US marines
